November 19, 201510 yr QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 19, 2015 -> 10:20 AM) I believe this post implied it: I should have quoted it, my bad. I think the question is not really whether Walker is better than Sanchez, it's more is the difference between Walker and Sanchez worth trading prospects away and adding a difference of roughly $9.5 million dollars in salary for a guy with just one year team control? And, in my opinion, the answer to that question is no. Especially when we have other greater needs when could spend that money and those prospects on. Edited November 19, 201510 yr by lasttriptotulsa
November 19, 201510 yr QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 19, 2015 -> 04:20 PM) I believe this post implied it: I should have quoted it, my bad. i really think the cost of getting a FA 3b vs the idea of walker providing a 1 yr reprieve is the actual question. also take into account giving him a QO if it works. so lets say he accepts it, still your team will not be laden with a FA of todays value of a 5+ yrs.

If Walker had another year of control I'd consider it, but just for 2016? Pass. We have too many holes to commit to one-year guys.

Walker is not a third basemen. What makes you think he can adequately play there is he never has? The guy is a mediocre second baseman as it is. And by moving him to third, you are devaluing his offense as well. The .750 OPS he put up last year is great as a second baseman but not nearly as good if playing a corner position.
November 19, 201510 yr IF you were going to go after 2b (cannot answer 'keep sanchez/internal candidate): Would you rather trade for Walker or sign Kendrick?
November 19, 201510 yr We have a young 2b with potential who plays better defense than Walker. No need to use assets there with so many weaknesses elsewhere.

November 19, 201510 yr It depends on our strategy. But if we plan on sticking with Trayce as an everyday outfielder and doing a youth movement, we shouldn't have any interest in Walker. It also should mean that we move some of our more attractive assets to add to the youth movement. That said, I don't know which direction we are going right now, but using prospects on someone like Walker just doesn't make a lot of sense.

I think the latter.
November 19, 201510 yr QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 19, 2015 -> 11:15 AM) Does trayce signal youth movement or d movement? I think the latter. I really don't think they are going to go into the season with Trayce as a starter. If Garcia does get moved I think it is to open a spot in an attempt to sign Upton or Cespedes. If Garcia is moved and you fail to sign and guy, then so be it Trayce becomes a starter.
November 19, 201510 yr QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 19, 2015 -> 11:15 AM) Does trayce signal youth movement or d movement? I think the latter. Swapping out Avi for Trayce adds 3 months to the White Sox age.
November 19, 201510 yr here is a question, does the sox do a trade for Walker, if the sox fo are convince he can manned 3b be better than the yrs and money for a fa replacement ???? edit for errors. Edited November 19, 201510 yr by LDF

Theu aren't paying $100 million for a free agent OF I pretty much take anything Dan Hayes says with a grain of salt.
November 19, 201510 yr Dan Hayes also said last year they probably would go spending big on a closer...or guy like Melky.
November 19, 201510 yr QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 19, 2015 -> 09:15 AM) Does trayce signal youth movement or d movement? I think the latter. I'm not that convinced that Trayce is a long-term starter, but I think if you are going that direction it likely indicates more of a youth movement. I'd also hope it indicates some focus on the D, but I don't know. We have a lot of poor defenders and I don't know that a guy who is probably better served as a 4th outfielder and starting him necessarily signals that movement. I still get pissed thinking about how we built a team around pitching with such a horrific defense.

If they really are going into a full rebuild let Avi keep playing to ultimately see what you have with him as his ceiling is higher than Trayce's. In the grand scheme of things the $2.5 million or so you will pay Avi is nothing.
November 19, 201510 yr QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 19, 2015 -> 12:15 PM) Does trayce signal youth movement or d movement? I think the latter. It just signals trying to get better wherever you can manage it.

I think it signals a youth movement because it means you aren't going to bring a bunch of vets in to fill other holes and contend. No way does this team plan on contending with Trayce in the outfield this year (or at least I don't see many plausible scenarios where it does).

I know Walker is better, but I don't think 2B should be our concern. 3B is a bigger problem IMO.
November 19, 201510 yr It seems like those who oppose Walker do so because they don't want to give up anything of significance / do not want to pay anything either. If that is the case, we will never improve. Let's not pretend Walker is not a substantial upgrade over Johnson / Sanchez. Neither can hit for the life of them. And to get a substantial upgrade without trading names like Quintana, Fulmer, Rodon, you have to be interested. Otherwise, we do not improve simple as that. As someone else stated, $10M is not bad for a player of Walker's caliber. Then, you look for a significant upgrade at other positions as well, possibly using Q. In this day and age, starting pitching is in abundance and hitting is not... We can sign serviceable pitchers. Look how far the Cubs went last year, and their starting rotation after Lester / Arrieta was just OK. We need to upgrade at offense, and this seems to be a very reasonable way to do so.

November 19, 201510 yr QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Nov 19, 2015 -> 12:45 PM) For those wondering if Walker can play 3B, he last played 3B in MLB in 2010. With the shortage of 3B, he could probably make himself some cash money if he figured out how to be decent there.
