I think the question is not really whether Walker is better than Sanchez, it's more is the difference between Walker and Sanchez worth trading prospects away and adding a difference of roughly $9.5 million dollars in salary for a guy with just one year team control? And, in my opinion, the answer to that question is no. Especially when we have other greater needs when could spend that money and those prospects on.

If Walker had another year of control I'd consider it, but just for 2016? Pass. We have too many holes to commit to one-year guys.

Walker is not a third basemen. What makes you think he can adequately play there is he never has? The guy is a mediocre second baseman as it is. And by moving him to third, you are devaluing his offense as well. The .750 OPS he put up last year is great as a second baseman but not nearly as good if playing a corner position.

It also should mean that we move some of our more attractive assets to add to the youth movement. I'd also hope it indicates some focus on the D, but I don't know. We have a lot of poor defenders and I don't know that a guy who is probably better served as a 4th outfielder and starting him necessarily signals that movement. I still get pissed thinking about how we built a team around pitching with such a horrific defense.

If they really are going into a full rebuild let Avi keep playing to ultimately see what you have with him as his ceiling is higher than Trayce's. In the grand scheme of things the $2.5 million or so you will pay Avi is nothing.

I think it signals a youth movement because it means you aren't going to bring a bunch of vets in to fill other holes and contend. No way does this team plan on contending with Trayce in the outfield this year (or at least I don't see many plausible scenarios where it does).

It seems like those who oppose Walker do so because they don't want to give up anything of significance / do not want to pay anything either. If that is the case, we will never improve. Let's not pretend Walker is not a substantial upgrade over Johnson / Sanchez. Neither can hit for the life of them. And to get a substantial upgrade without trading names like Quintana, Fulmer, Rodon, you have to be interested. Otherwise, we do not improve simple as that. As someone else stated, $10M is not bad for a player of Walker's caliber. Then, you look for a significant upgrade at other positions as well, possibly using Q. In this day and age, starting pitching is in abundance and hitting is not... We can sign serviceable pitchers. Look how far the Cubs went last year, and their starting rotation after Lester / Arrieta was just OK. We need to upgrade at offense, and this seems to be a very reasonable way to do so.
