The Glaring Question - Sox Starting Pitching
It’s not a single start, he can’t go deep into games and he gives up a lot of early runs. The guy is toast this season

It's a good point. I think with the Padres though, there's some outside factors affecting it that probably wouldn't relate to the Sox. Coastal California location is a big one, with a new ballpark part of a more comprehensive redevelopment of San Diego's downtown. SD's real estate market is going bonkers relative to Chicago, the Padres have a potentially wealthier clientele and more tourism to tap into than the Sox do on Chicago's South Side. A relative dearth of sports makes the Padres pretty much the only show in town too. I'm not sure a South Loop ballpark changes a ton in that regard, though it probably does attract more non-baseball fans to attend than a Bridgeport park. Intuitively, I'd bet the Sox best path toward valuation increase is by attracting foreign, specifically Japanese and Korean, stars and developing a new fanbase that isn't geographically-connected to the team. Of course, then it doesn't really matter if you're in Chicago or Nashville. I generally like this idea because it helps the team and it likely lines the owner's pockets. Boring prediction that seems likely to me is that Ishbia-led Sox operate like the Rubenstein Orioles. I think their fans were expecting a large influx of cash into the team, but so far the Orioles are bottom of the league in payroll and just traded a guy they'd likely have to pay big money to (right trade to make for baseball reasons still IMO). Rubenstein (read it like a portmanteau of rube and frankenstein) talked the talk when he bought the team but so far he just seems like...any other owner.

Me too. And I wonder what kind of sequence of relievers we'll see. MacDougal time? More Hagen?

The Glaring Question - Sox Starting Pitching
Honestly going forward if Shane Smith is anywhere close to last year, he can at least give you innings, even if he isn't giving you front line stuff. Not sure if he is broken forever, or if they figured out how to get him back on track. It's so hard to take a single MiLB start and take too much out of it.

Are they just hoping it was nerves from his major league debut? How in the hell was MacDougal not sent down after that golden sombrero of pitching??

I think the question that we are seeing here is short term profitablility year over year, versus return on investment in terms of valuation. Think of how the White Sox have been operated versus how the Padres were. The Sox cut and raise payroll annual based on revenues with the goal of a slight dollar profit for investors year over year. If revenues fall short, payroll gets chopped, but in general, the team does everything it can to stay in the green annually. The last six year were the exception, but mostlly because a series of unexpected bad things happened, though the teams behavior to cut dollars did follow to form. Then take SD who never turns an annual profit, but because of their spending has attracted large investments and interest to them, so instead of an annual profit, the value of the franchise exploded at a MUCH larger rate than the White Sox did. Despite their location, they are worth about double what the Sox are. So while the profit return wasn't there, the overall rate of return on investment was much greater through the extra billions in valuation. In stock market terms are you chasing dividends or returns? Both have their profit, but I think the latter actually generates larger returns overall.

I liked Len Kaspers idea....play regular baseball for 11 or 12 innings and let it end in a tie. It's a long friggin season....I would leave the stadium or sleep better with a tie than with a bullshit Manfred loss. Who in the fucks idea was it initially to award a guy 2B who's only accomplishment was making the last out in the previous inning??

Manfred ball losses should count as a half win like in the NHL, I hate them so much.

Curious how long they expect Newcomb to go.

I don't want to blame Ron if this team falters, but I will damnit.

We've discussed this, professional sports is literally the safest and best performing investment a moneyed entity could make. Long gone are the days of it being a vanity purchase. There's no reason to believe Ishbia is any different from these entities, these dudes want to make money above anything else. If it's more profitable to move the team and never sign huge free agent contracts, that's almost certainly what he's gonna do.
