Not really seeing anything concrete tying the Sox to him. That said, if they spent 5 years, $80M I'd say why the hell not. It represents trying to win a little bit, which I appreciate. He's a young player. And if it completely flops, it's not an amount of money that kills you in the long run.

Offers would just be the same next year. Nobody in Japan throws hard anyways so he'd face the same questions. And most he'd make in Japan is like 2-3 million. So he'd delay another year towards MLB free agency (on the ither end) while also still leaving tens of millions on the table even on the lowest ends.

I think they can land a top 25 player at 42 with their bonus pool space. They’ll be able to exceed $4 million in the 2nd round if they’d like. I think there are players with much more upside than Thome who are realistic now.
