I said this when the deal was made, and I'll say it again now: Good pitchers are harder to come by than good outfielders. Jeremy Reed is going to be very good for a long time, but the Sox needed Freddy now. Sometimes you deal the future to get what you need now, and that's what made that a good deal for the Sox.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 10, 2005 -> 11:05 AM) There is an old saying... You can't win a division in April, but you sure can lose it. Yeah, I heard that too, somewhere in this thread....

QUOTE(winodj @ Apr 10, 2005 -> 08:28 AM) Any band that releases a forty five minute LP that consists of one song, deserves some credit. I respect your opinion, but I couldn't agree less. Give me 15 3-minute songs over one 45-minute sprawling collage any day of the week. I've always felt that any musical thought can be conveyed in 3 minutes, and anything more than that is filler. Limiting? Probably, but I'm too old to change that now.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 10, 2005 -> 03:58 AM) C'mon guys. Get a grip on reality. We haven't established dominace over anything. We are playing good ball against our top division rivals and getting off to a good start. That's great. That's important. That's better than the alternative. But we are only 5 games into a 162 game schedule. YAS, I know you're trying to keep things in check, and that's a solid rational move, but I will offer up that old chestnut that "you can't win the division in April and May, but you CAN lose the division in April and May". What's nice about this is the confidence factor. You get the Sox thinking that "YEAH, we can beat these guys in their own house" and you get inside the Twins' heads a little bit, that can only be good for the Sox. A good start is vital for the Sox because of the changes that have been made. A slow start would have everyone second-guessing and then they might start pressing, trying to do too much. I like what I've seen so far, now I want to see them keep this level of starting pitching up!

Why can't pitcher's throw faster than 100MPH?

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 9, 2005 -> 12:14 PM) INteresting about the myth of the 500 foot HR (poor Joe Borchard) Too bad his signing bonus wasn't a myth.... -
Last week, The Moron wrote an article about "the naysayers" who were against the hire of Bruce Weber, and then a reader sent in a letter stating that The Moron himself was one of those "naysayers". I do love it when people call The Moron on his flip-flopping, even though none of that will stop him. If the Cubs turn things around, The Moron will somehow find a way to congratulate himself for inspiring them.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 9, 2005 -> 11:45 AM) good points one and all. Plus we know what a mean husse Queen is, maybe the new wife is worried that Queen just has too much magnetism for her honey. YES, a hockey-crazed woman is a VERY strong lure.....even if she does like the Carolina Hurricanes......

QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 9, 2005 -> 08:32 AM) See it keeps spiraling. Leave a message with all the info, all the questions. Don't guess what the other person is thinking and feeling. It takes a long time to make an old friend. Yeah, but also true is this: Old Friend + New Wife With An Agenda = HE GAWN! It sounds to me like Brian has made attempts, and for whatever reason...(coughcoughfianceecoughcough), this friend is dusting him. If the friend was a stand-up guy, he'd have already searched Brian out by now to explain what's going on. To have not even sent an invitation by now is VERY telling. Time to file this friend away, I'm afraid.
-
He's already better than anyone on CLTV.
-
Since Brian has tried to call a bunch of times, I say he should forget about standing up at all. If asked, he should say thanks but no thanks. A month beforehand is not enough time, IMO. If there's no invitation, then I wouldn't call to invite myself. To me, THAT is a girly thing to do. You guys should go out on a nice date that night if you weren't invited. Sounds like you're not going to have much of a relationship with his friend after they're married anyway, so why put out that much of an effort just to attend their wedding?

QUOTE(Soxnbears01 @ Apr 8, 2005 -> 11:22 PM) spivey should have never scored from 1st on a decenly fielded ball. Just saying. Spivey was gonna be sent no matter what, so it would take Hollandsworth and Perez to both make solid throws to get him. It would have been interesting. And it is the closer's fault if he gives up consecutive 2-out hits. It's also Dusty Toothpick's fault that he's in love with Hollandsworth, and won't put Hairston in LF. I know he was at 2B on Friday, but IMO Hairston should be their everyday LF and Walker should be their regular 2B. That way they could lead Hairston off, bat Walker 2nd and put Patterson down to 6 or 7 where he belongs.

A Cubbie co-worker of mine asked me, "Sooooooo, what happened to Shingo yesterday???" I replied, "Same thing that's gonna happen to LaToya about 15 times this year....maybe even today....." Didn't know I was gonna be right.

Yeah, I kinda didn't like the walk for just that reason. (Not the line-out double play, just the idea of a DP instead of having to try to get the runner at home)

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Apr 8, 2005 -> 01:49 PM) Yeah. I have to thank The Critic for this one. I started the dang thread and then he hijacks it into being a Metallica discussion. He knows I hate Metallica, and that is what really hurts about this. Ahhhh, you're resilient, you'll get over it..... Old Metallica = Recent Metallica = :sleep :puke :headshake

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Apr 8, 2005 -> 12:42 PM) I switch over to the red line at roosevelt to get to DePaul, and today sucked having to get stuck in a crowded train with cubs fans. I usually take advantage and get a 15-minute power nap before I get to my stop, but that was impossible today with the idiot cubs fans taking up the good seats and talking loudly about how little they know about baseball. Im just glad I was able to close my eyes and get 5 minutes of sleep in before the two guys in nomar shirts and blue c's on their cheeks sitting across from me startedo make out or something... Not to worry, I made up for the lost 10 minutes in class during a boring student presentation... Livin' up to that screen name, eh, Sleepy???

QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Apr 8, 2005 -> 11:38 AM) That's a little rough. I've been a metallica fan since the Master of Puppets album. Although the music isn't as good as it was then, its still better than most of the music out there. I thought the last album had 3-5 good sounds....including St. Anger, Frantic and Some Kind of Monster. It was better than Reload. The therapy thing was a little odd...but it worked for them. These guys are in their 40's now...not quite the same guys who became 'Alcholica'... I saw them live back in August...still the best s*** you'll ever see....hands down. I'm in my 40's now, and I'm not qualified for "AlcoholicA" either anymore, but I still like metal, so why don't they!!! I'm sure their old stuff still sounds good live, but I'm not interested in hearing anything after "...And Justice For All". It's just not the same band, and I don't like what they've become. If others do, that's cool, but to my ears it's just hideous. I'm a loooooooong-time fan, but I also gave up on them over a decade ago. I've seen them in concert many times, the first being at Metro ( then called Cabaret Metro ) in I believe it was 1983 ( may have been 84? Raven was with them, I think it was 83....MAN, did I like Raven.... ) and the last time being in 93 or 94 at the Allstate Arena ( then called the Rosemont Horizon ). I heard all I needed to hear of the Black Album at that show, and I didn't like it one bit. I'd say the best show I saw them put on was with Queensryche at the UIC Pavilion ( then called the UIC Pavilion ) in 1989. THAT was a great show! That movie Some Kind Of Monster is some of the funniest s*** you will EVER see! It's not intended to be funny, but it is. It's on VH1 this Saturday at 9pm.

QUOTE(Steff @ Apr 8, 2005 -> 10:51 AM) Pictures don't show up for me here at work. Oooops, sorry, didn't know that. Yeah, he had the red-and-yellow facepaint, the feathered hair, the "performance-enhanced" muscles and the little fringe thingys on his arms. He was and is one seriously goofy dude.

QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Apr 8, 2005 -> 10:54 AM) A little off topic...but if you are an adult and you watch this stuff and attend wrestling events, I think something's wrong with you. Its all so absurd. So I'm assuming then that you watch only documentaries and news programs, watch no comedy TV shows or films unless they are based on real-life stories, and only read non-fiction books? It's a television show, and when done right, it's one of the more entertaining television shows out there. The heydays of Ric Flair, Roddy Piper, Mick Foley, The Rock and Steve Austin ( among some others I'm sure I left out ) were some of the funniest television I have ever seen. When done badly ( the dying days of wCw, the current dying days of NWA-TNA, most indy federations ), it can be unbearable to watch. If you believe that it's a real sport, or that the decision of who wins and loses is NOT made backstage, or that someone can take a chairshot to the head and not feel any ill effects.....it's not for you.

It's the Indians' fault for hitting those belt-high fastballs into the seats!!!!! We really need to move on.

QUOTE(retro1983hat @ Apr 8, 2005 -> 10:44 AM) Just thought I'd throw something positive in, since being a Sox fan means you are born cynical, skeptical, crabby, jealous, and basically the only team you hate more than the Cubs or any other team, is the Sox themselves. I don't think this is too far off, actually. I think "hate" is a bit too strong a term, but there is a sense of angry disappointment in many Sox fans that I don't find in the Cub fans I know. I have found my Sox fan friends to be more cynical and crabby for sure. Most of my Cub fan friends are not the dopey "bleachers, beers and babes" variety, but they do seem to be more optimistic than Sox fans, even if that optimism is not warranted.

Yep. That's him, pictured a few posts above.

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Apr 8, 2005 -> 08:55 AM) Well, while they're at it, they can come clean and admit that Gordon is not the real Gordon, and the real Gordon was abducted by bodysnatching space aliens and replaced with a Pea Pod Alien Gordon some time in the early 1970s... Something is out there, people. My advice is DO NOT GO TO SLEEP!! I'm pretty sure this is what happened to Metallica too, right before the recording of the "Black Album". Somewhere on a faraway planet, the REAL Metallica are looking down helplessly as the interplanetary imposters steal their identities, destroy their credibility, record "St. Anger" :puke and allow themselves to be filmed crying, meeting with a therapist, and having touchy-feely "how do YOOOOOOU feel about this?" band meetings.
