  1. MOst of the game was the announcers say stuff like "you're not watching a college player" -- WTF am I watching then? when did this guy start getting paid?
  2. anyone watching the 2 hours of Andrew Bogut fellating on ESPN?
  3. Reading through a few of the free articles over at BP, I found this gem. Here's a link to Hiller's great season -- http://retrosheet.org/boxesetc/Khillj1010081973.htm and foulke's 2000 -- http://retrosheet.org/boxesetc/Kfoulk0010052000.htm Not looking to start up any argument here, just caught me by surprise that Foulke's 2000 was comparable to Gagne's 2002 and 2004, and among the 10 best performances by a reliever in the last 30 years. Also, I'm putting money on Gagne pitching 82.1 IP next year.
  4. In reality it was much earlier.... The writing was on the wall for a long time... On June 26th, The Sox called up Felix Diaz for an emergency start vs. the Cubs, as Shoeneweis was sent to the DL. Frank and Maggs had already been knocked out and the sox were treading water without them. Over the next 5 games the Sox would notch wins vs. the following starting pitchers, Zambrano, Maddux, Silva, Radke, and Santana. The final victory illustrated how truly lucky they had it at the end of June. The sox managed only 2 hits off of Santana, 1 happened to be a 2 run shot, and Garland somehow held the twinks to just one run... But those series of 5 games, and the next 5 to follow, put our bats into deep slumber in the absense of Frank and Maggs. Over the next 5 games, the sox scored a total of 7 runs and batted well under .200 as a team. You didn't realize it yet, but your girlfriend had left you.
  5. QUOTE(JimH @ Jan 31, 2005 -> 06:56 PM) Yours is an interesting point of view. The team appears set up for their desired change in direction, from a slugging inconsistent outfit to a force-the-action squad. IMO they will not be afraid to make additions or changes if this team gets out of the gate poorly. Sox management is getting a reputation of taking action during the season, sometimes drastic action. My concern all along has been depth. We lack infield depth and starting pitching depth. There is still time to sort this out during spring training, but the article being debated was probably written at least a week ago. I suspect they know they have more work to do, and are proceeding trying to get it done. My POV is that kenny did a good job doing what he wanted to get done, but I'm not sold on that being the best route for this team. For our sakes for the next two plus season, I hope he proves me wrong... He's the one with a front office job in major league baseball, not me... There's a reason for that, (I think ) -- For the record, I still think that picking up Pierzynski is the best move/pick-up for any team this year... Left handed catchers who hit .300 aren't growing on trees, and when you find one they cost more than $2M.
  6. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Jan 31, 2005 -> 06:37 PM) Beastly does have some point in the fact that we are NOWHERE near a bottom 10 offseason, thats absurd. Willie, I agree that I don't think we're in the bottom 10... but like the Rozner column the other day, I think this one touches a little nerve... I don't think we're as improved as much as most here think... Earlier in the off-season, I used the quote "that's like moving around the deck chairs on the Titanic" -- Which at the time was exactly how I felt... Currently I would say we've added a few lifeboats. We've improved a little bit, but the ship's probably still gonna sink.. I still think we have a good shot at winning the division, but that's not saying much.
  7. QUOTE(Beastly @ Jan 31, 2005 -> 06:30 PM) I stepped in and voiced my opinion, Cheat. Let me think what I want to think...okay pal? jebus. OK -- Just let the record show that you've called one of the smartest, most respected, baseball minds there is a "stupid journalist who has no intelligence whatsoever" -- That doesn't exactly reflect well on your opinion, which you have to admit is clouded by a pair of think silver and black glasses.
  8. QUOTE(Beastly @ Jan 31, 2005 -> 06:21 PM) We don't need to listen to some stupid journalist who has no intelligence whatsoever. :headshake Wow, just wow.
  9. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 31, 2005 -> 05:30 PM) Dye was listed as a loss for Oakland, yet he didn't mention where he ended up, in addition to forgetting to mention Vizcaino, he didn't bother to mention the Hermanson signing either. BTW, 2005 Dye> end of 2004 Magglio who would have costed a minimum of $11.2 million. How the f*** is that not an upgrade? Dye is not an upgrade over magglio -- VORP DYE MAGGS 2001 22.7 58.2 2002 18.0 68.0 2003 -17.2 63.2 2004 23.3 11.8 avg 11.7 50.3 Hermanson does not deserve to be mentioned(what a waste)... Vizcaino is a decent pick up, but if you're hanging your offseason on the signing of a middle reliever than you're in trouble.
  10. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2004 @ Jan 31, 2005 -> 05:22 PM) I see your point. But the way I look at it, the worst that can happen is we fail to win the divison. Just like we've failed in 01, 02, 03, and 04. So if we don't win it this year, it sure as hell won't be because we didn't have Maggs or Lee. Like I said, just playing devils advocate.... If the list was made on Friday, it would have been criminal not to include the O's. Even with the addition of Sosa, they have to staff and I think should be included.
  11. QUOTE(Pale Hose Jon @ Jan 31, 2005 -> 05:23 PM) where are you getting this? http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=cita...adel&type=story
  12. surprised it took so long. I talked to Kurt's brother back before Turner was signed, and I asked him if he had heard if Turner was gonna be hired... He told me it looked good, and that Kurt "would get a shot" with the bears.
  13. Let's play devils advocate --- Lee>Podsednik Maggs>Dye That's making yourself worse with two acquisitions. The biggest gain to the pitching staff is a guy who has averaged 40IP the last two years and might be 40+ years old. The biggest gain in the IF is a complete unknown, who neyer acknowledges might have the biggest impact of the group. Pierz is a large upgrade assuming he can quit being a douche to those around him.
  14. QUOTE(SoxFanForever @ Jan 31, 2005 -> 05:05 PM) Never let facts get in the way of a good story. How often do you read neyer? How often does he write a fluff piece like this with little to no statistical documentation to back it up?
  15. QUOTE(3E8 @ Jan 31, 2005 -> 02:33 PM) BOSE QuietComfort 2 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones.
  16. That's still 20 pounds less than Sammy Sosa supposedly has lost. link

  19. The link I read must be from something else --- It was about some kids imitating jackass. 1 kid died -- Here's some other info I found... http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthrea...40&pagenumber=1 You don't wanna read the whole thraed.... Basically, he lived, Broken jaw, lost teeth, messed up his eye ... The kids were from Hammond IN....
  20. The kid is dead... the link to the Newspaper article I found in my cache now requires payment to read the article.
  21. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jan 30, 2005 -> 02:59 PM) No Petit? That's what I was gonna say --- You can't complain about BMac not making the list if Petit doesn't make it either.
  22. FA's who post >.900 OPS get 10M or more.... anyone who thinks that frank is not worth that is misguided and just plain wrong. {-----------OPS------------} player Career Peak 2004 Contract Thomas .996 1.217 .997 Delgado .949 1.134 .949 4/$52M Sexson .877 .927 .914 4/$50M Beltran .844 .915 .915 7/$115M Drew .904 1.027 1.006 5/$55M Beltre .794 1.017 1.017 5/$64M Varitek .798 .872 .872 4/$40M Glaus .854 1.008 .930 4/$45M Crazy SS market Cabrera .725 .807 .689 4/$36M Renteria .746 .874 .728 4/$40M Polanco .748 .799 .786 1/$4.6M Valentin .773 .845 .773 1/$3.5M
