QUOTE(BobDylan @ Aug 6, 2006 -> 05:38 PM) Chris Young is the guy that dropped out of winter ball? If so, it's his fault he's not in a White Sox uni. That would be Jerry Owens AND Charlie Haeger, both of whom are still with the Sox.

The problem is not Thome, per se. It's that 1-2-3 are extremely weak against LHP. So much so that it has become routine for a LOOGY to blow through our 1-2-3 late in the game. Moving Dye to #3 would help, but not that much. We really need a threat against LHP in the #2 spot. If you want to move Jermaine anywhere, that's where it should be. JD #2 would neutralize the LOOGY, and you'd still have JD, THome, Kong going back-to-back-to-back. Pods JD Thome Kong Crede AJ Iguchi Uribe Anderson

QUOTE(dasox24 @ Aug 5, 2006 -> 11:46 PM) Shelby and Cassel are both really getting on a role in Great Falls. I know, I know, it's just rookie league, but I still think it's good to see them do well anyway. Also, I had no idea Fields had 20 SB's this year. That's pretty solid, especially for a 3B. Not to deflate his total, but I think both of his full-season totals are a product of Razorball. I don't think those SBs translate into much of anything at the major league level. More than anything, I think they may show that he has adequate enough speed to play the OF though.

There are no good defensive 2B in the AL anymore(I miss the O-Dog. I wish we had him). The overall defense at that position is sub-par.

Cortes struck out 9 in 6IP yesterday in his second start for Burlington, but gave up two bombs and had a rocky debut in the Midwest league during his first start. he's already allowed 4 HRs after allowing only 6 with Kanny. Lumsden has allowed 2 runs in 7IP with 7K's in Witchita.

Andruw Jones Claimed off waivers...

QUOTE(JimH @ Aug 4, 2006 -> 03:39 PM) Kenny Williams must be getting different information than you. He mentioned that both Josh Fields and Ryan Sweeney were asked about multiple times in trade talks. Several non contending teams could very well want an up-and-coming 3rd baseman for 2007 and beyond. It wasn't just about the rest of 2006. The reason Fields wasn't traded is because KW and staff wanted to keep him, for now at least. Which is pretty much what he said at this time last year about Chris Young and Gio Gonzalez. Just because teams are asking for a player doesn't mean they are offering fair market value for him. With the way KW likes to sweeten the pot with prospects, you've gotta figure that he wasn't being offered enough in return. Or in other words, there wasn't a market for fields. -

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 4, 2006 -> 03:10 PM) A bit off topic, but the fact that we wouldn't trade Fields makes me nervous about how confident we are in bringing back Crede. Either that or we think Fields can learn how to play left, but his numbers the last 2 months down at AAA make me nervous. Figured I'd bring it up since your the guy with the best blog on the net. /sucking up We didn't trade Fields because there wasn't a market for him. SD, who would have been the most obvious destination, decided to go with a proven hitter who hadn't played a game at third in, what, almost 10 years? With Philly, SD, and I'm sure some others in the market for a young 3B this offseason, I'm sure the market will pick up, so long as Fields finishes strong. There's just not much market for an inexperienced 3B at the trade deadline. Both of those teams were better off waiting to make a deal. -
Andruw Jones Claimed off waivers...

Also, nothing is happening here. In order for a move to be made all players involved must clear waivers. All players on the 40-man roster that is. The obvious end-around in a deal like this is to include highly valued prospects who have yet to be placed on the 40-man, of which the White Sox have 3, Sweeney, Broadway, and Fields. -

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 4, 2006 -> 02:58 PM) They're not over $100 million, but they're close, at $92M. The reasons why? Roger Clemens, Jeff Bagwell, and to a lesser extent guys like Andy Pettitte. The Astros were in the low 90's before Clemens was added to the roster. -

This thread was just quoted by Mac, Jurko, & Harry. -- They're not going to come out an say they found some spiff on a message board though. I know they were quoting this thread because the info provided is inaccurate. The Sox have won the first two games of a series 14 times this season. They've won the third game, completing the sweep 7 times. 4 times in April (DET, KC, MIN, LAA) and 3 since (OAK, CIN, STL). They're just 3 for their last 10 when they had the chance to sweep, and have dropped their last 5 attempts.

I suppose this belongs here, as this is the recruiting thread. Truth be told, I couldn't give two heaping steamers about recruiting, but I thought this paragraph was fun-ny.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 2, 2006 -> 08:55 PM) For some reason, the board isn't letting me quote your post, Gene. But anyway, by contract year, I meant in a sense like last year was Garland's contract year. He wasn't going into free agency, but by pitching so well, he got an extension. Well then, why single out Boras clients? It's baseball's reserve clause, arbitration process, and GM's that hand out foolish contracts that you have a problem with. Offhand, I'm having trouble coming up with many foolish contracts handed out before a player reaches free-agency, specifically 2 years before a player reaches FA. Daren Driefort is the worst case that I can come up with off the top of my head, and he was in the same boat as Garland, a year from FA. There's relatively little risk in signing Crede to a 3-year deal with a 4th year option following this season. The first two seasons, you give him at or below what he would get at arbitration, and then fair market value for his 2 years following that. People around here really don't seem to understand that defense is worth $$$. And that $5M for a slick fielding SS with pop is not overpaying, it's below market value.
-
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 2, 2006 -> 04:30 PM) You don't think Boras clients have a tendency to have career years right before they sign a contract? The notion that players perform better because it's a contract year, especially in a sport like baseball where there is so much data freely available, is misguided at best. There is some anecdotal evidence that players in their contract years play better, but this has more to do with baseball's reserve clause which put's players at free agency following their 6th year of play (typically age 28-31 seasons) And I don't see how this is even an argument with Crede considering free agency isn't until after the 2008 season. By your reasoning, he'll be putting up 50HR 150RBI seasons by then.
-
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 2, 2006 -> 04:16 PM) Well, I think part of the reason Crede is having such a monster year is because he's yet to sign a contract extension. I know he's said that he won't let Boras dictate whether he stays or goes, but he's still a Boras client. Those guys seem to have their best years right before signing a contract. Also the green seats are the reason that Vazquez sucks.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Aug 1, 2006 -> 09:30 PM) Harrel got removed after .2 innings... had 3 walks a ground out and a strikeout so dont know what the deal is. I'm going to guess that they're not happy with his control. He'll be back in W-S by the end of the week. His control is the one thing that's really holding him back, because, from the sound of it, when he's ahead in the count, he's about as hard to hit as anyone in our system. Maybe Coop can work with him in Spring Training
