Its Time For The Josh Fields Era To Begin...........
Gene Honda Civic replied to Thunderin'Thome's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(WCSox @ Jun 1, 2006 -> 03:16 PM) Um, OK, so Pods can't play RF because of his lack of arm strength, but it's OK for him to play LF? BTW, having a "cannon for an arm" doesn't mean crap if you have little accuracy to go with it. I find it amusing that Pods is supposedly the worst defensive CF ever, but still played there for two seasons and beat out Brady Clark, who has been playing there over the past two years. I guess that makes Clark worse than awful, huh? I wonder why he's still in the majors, since he has no power, little speed, and can barely hit for average. Hey, we agree on something! Dude. Shut up. In 2003, the White Sox played Carl Everett in CF over Aaron Rowand. Therefore, using your logic, Carl Everett is the best centerfielder in baseball. -

Another thing about Fields, he currently has a .436 BABIP. TOTALLY UNSUSTAINABLE! The highest BABIP for a major leaguer qualified for the batting title last year was .356. You can't continue to find the holes at a rate much higher than that for any sustainable period of time. Fields will not finish his this season above .300 unless he does two things 1) hit 35+ homeruns 2) cut his K:B ratio to around 1:1 or better. If he doesn't do either both of those, he won't hit .300. In fact, part of the reason Brian Anderson may have been overvalued was that he was able to hold a .365 BABIP last season at AAA, which again, isn't really sustainable unless you're Ichiro or Jeter or something. -

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ May 31, 2006 -> 12:44 AM) On another note, Ryan Sweeney only has 24ks in 135Abs. Or 17% of the time. His swing probably projects more as being not overmatched like the long looping swings that we have brought up before. But then again, he is another left handed bat and we are trying to get more right handed in our lineup. Sweeney struck out about 12 times his first week and a half, and didn't walk at all for a little bit. Since then, he's been steady, 1:1 K/BB ratio. The one encouraging thing about Fields is that he has walked more in May than in April. He still needs to limit the K's but if he can develop a solid batting eye, he'll survive like Thome/Dunn/Gomes etc. -

QUOTE(Kalapse @ May 31, 2006 -> 12:24 AM) My input isn't really necessary since just about everyone who has ever seen him play CF knows that he's a butcher out there. But I saw him make top 10 plays like 20 times! -

QUOTE(Thunderin @ May 31, 2006 -> 12:16 AM) I have seen highlights of Pods playing center with the Brewers. And he made some decent catches. I think you guys seriously undeerate him. In what way would he lead the league in strikeouts? Please explain. He's striking out in 33% of his at-bats in AAA. Anderson, the player you're dying to get rid of struck out at a rate of only about 25% of his at-bats. Big league pitchers will exploit Fields hole-filled swing even more than Anderson's. -

Fields might lead baseball in strikeouts that way. Seriously dumb idea. -
QUOTE(Nokona @ May 30, 2006 -> 10:30 PM) I think it might have been a hit and run and Pods just didnt get a jump at all. If it was a hit-and-run, Ozzie needs his head checked.

My new favorite prospect does it again.... Carries a no-hitter into the 7th. 7IP 1H 0R 2BB 6K ERA down to 1.80 Tons of groundballs again. 11-2 GB/FB for the game. Two balls left the infield. -
QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ May 30, 2006 -> 07:27 PM) I think people forget that our bullpen was a bit of a mess in May last year... Yeah, I mean Hermanson had allowed 1 run on the season. Cotts didn't allow a run in May Politte had an ERA around 2. MESSED!

<FutureSox.com>A List of Potential Draft and Follow Candidates
Gene Honda Civic replied to a topic in FutureSox Board
Please sign Flores, La Froimboise, and Garcia... That'd be like 3 extra top-round draft picks this season. -
It's not news until Deadspin says it's news. Yawn.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 30, 2006 -> 12:24 AM) Hmm good point, I guess I didn't think of how deep into the season we are. I dunno, I guess I am suffering from the "only one stat matters" viewpoint, and we are 6-4 in Jon starts, which paces us at 18-12 in the first 30 starts from our #5 starter. And with that in mind, Jon can and probably will pitch at least a little better eventually, which could improve that record. The funny thing is Garland is doing exactly what we were looking for in a 5th starter from 2001-2004. He's hasn't been good, but he hasn't been incompetent either. 10 games in with his ERA as poor as it is, you just have to chalk it up to a lost season already. Hope he returns to at least pre-05 form and keeps winning games. Like you said, at this point, you're better off just watching the W-L column than ERA, because ERA is going to take a Cy Young second half for it to get back to the high expectations that some have attached to the high price tag.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 30, 2006 -> 12:10 AM) All I know is Jon will pitch better than he is right now. He won't be MB or anything, but he'll finish with a 4.60 ERA or so and 14 or 15 wins and 200+ IP, and that's not bad for a 5th starter (which is what he is on this staff, by far). Garland will need to post a 3.80 ERA for the next 140 innings to meet that projection. He's gone nearly a third of the season with an ERA almost 2 runs above his career average. I'll settle for him pitching his career average for the remainder of the season, which will put him north of 5.00 to end the season, and have 85% of the site calling for his head.

Well done. The three game series with the Braves, which featured 0 Cubs wins and a comedy of poor play, drew 124,089 and set a franchise record for attendance in a 3-game series. You douchebags really stuck it to the Tribune company.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ May 29, 2006 -> 08:18 PM) Bobby La Framboise was named co-Southern California JUCO pitcher of the year. You gotta figure he'll be signed. He was 11-0 with a 91/24 K/BB ratio and a 2.06 ERA in 81 innings pitched. He was the only pitcher in his league qualified for the ERA title that had more K's than innings pitched. Most of them hovered around 6/9 or less. He must have some good stuff.

Regarding 17th rounder Enrique Garcia, pitching against the local South Suburban College in the JuCo World Series... Sounds like he'll need top few rounds money to sign him.

Draft & Follow deadline from last year is quickly approaching... Any word on some of our D&F's from last season?

QUOTE(Soxfest @ May 28, 2006 -> 04:27 PM) Good read I enjoyed it Fields is coming on fast....JC may be dealt in off-season. I'd bet my car the Crede and Contreras will be with the Sox in '07

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ May 27, 2006 -> 08:41 PM) The Tribe might turn into sellers at the break.... Why? They were 22-25 on this date a year ago, in third place, 10 games back. They were 11 back at the ASB, still in 3rd place They were 15 back after the Sox swept them to open the second half, still in third place, just two games up on 4th.
