He was the worst, and also the most famous MLB ump. People only remember the worse umpires and not pedestrian umps. I myself remember umps like Angel, Bucknor, Laz Diaz and of course Country Joe West, but dont ask me about the better umps, don’t remember any.

You are right. Angel was the gold standard for bad umpiring.

It was reported in the press that he was negotiating a retirement settlement with MLB. He was the worst MLB ump in my life time. He was the only ump I checked to see before games if he was umpiring. He was the gold standard of bad umpiring. Good riddance.
