NEWSFLASH: Ex-Sox Santo elected to Hall of Fame
greg775 replied to StatManDu's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Brian @ Dec 5, 2011 -> 09:10 PM) I understand his numbers were good and he had the gold gloves, but I always saw the Hall of Fame as something special for people to get in with besides numbers. A moment or a aura about a player. Ozzie Smith didn't have good offensive numbers but he was awesome at SS, had teh highlights, the rings, and the moment, such as his homer and Jack Buck's call. Santo has the clicking of the heels. It's not even because he was a Cub as to why I don't want him in. Thing is, Santo was a dominant third baseman in his era. If Bill James says he's deserving I think we should take notice of that as well. -

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Dec 5, 2011 -> 09:05 PM) He's a White Sox legend. That's why I said I "desperately" want to keep him. If Sox are too cheap and want to slap the loyal fans in the face and let him go, then I'd rather see him stay in Chicago and not be on the f***ing Twins beating us six times a year and like somebody said, no-hitting us, which he would. -

QUOTE (Tex @ Dec 5, 2011 -> 08:00 PM) I saw him play, and with all due regard to Josh Fields, Santo was the best thirdbaseman that played in Chicago in my lifetime. I think it sucked that he wasn't elected during his lifetime. Nice post. He did deserve it while he was alive. Bill James says he's a Hall of Famer, too. -

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 2, 2011 -> 05:46 PM) The Cubs line was lame. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 2, 2011 -> 05:47 PM) Greg, I can't believe anyone would want one of the most popular players in Sox history to go play for the Cubs. 1 and 2.) I want him to pitch for the White Sox desperately, but if we are too cheap (despite outrageous parking and ticket prices in baseball today) to keep him, I want him to stay where he belongs. In Chicago. What's so bad about that? He is a Chicago legend. -

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Dec 5, 2011 -> 07:17 PM) Santo with the sympathy vote, way too many Cub players from a team that won nothing...............Minoso should of got in. Santo deserves it. He was one of the best of the best in his era. Congrats to Ronnie. Rest in peace. -
QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Dec 5, 2011 -> 08:46 PM) With many teams looking for a SS, I hope Alexei is also a candidate to be moved in a trade.. Why? Who do you want to play ss for the Sox next season? Omar?

QUOTE (joeynach @ Dec 4, 2011 -> 11:49 PM) His Line Drive rate was actually the highest of his career in 2011, 20.3%. It was like 16.3% during his rookie year in 09. I guess a lot of them were hit right at people, then, cause his BA sucked big dog. I can't knock the guy too much cause his glove was a sight to behold last year. Very good defensive player.

I have a sinking feeling we're not going to like our roster after the winter meetings and free agency. Losing Mark and Danks does not bode well. Sale better be amazing as a sterter and I'm not sold on Humber/Stewart as anything more than the hacks the Royals have been trotting out there the last 20 years.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 5, 2011 -> 06:03 AM) Greg must be celebrating the Marlins' 2012 NL Championship, along with random Lawrence/KC-area fans. Reyes, Heath Bell and taking a run at Pujols? Wow! Hmmm, me thinks we got rid of the wrong guy in Ozzie. I thought nobody wanted to play for Ozzie. I'm thinking we got the raw end of the stick in Kenny. Prove me wrong, KW. Marlins signing people; Sox moves to be determined.

QUOTE (DirtySox @ Dec 4, 2011 -> 07:16 PM) SI_JonHeyman Jon Heyman buehrle a very popular free agent w/ 14 teams in mix. minn, az among surprise entrants, but $14M salary target steep for them 3 minutes ago Favorite Retweet Reply If he goes to Minnesota it'll will be really hard to follow the Sox any more. That would be a kick in the gut.

2011-12 White Sox off season catch all thread
greg775 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (sunofgold @ Dec 4, 2011 -> 12:34 AM) What do think about the idea of inviting Aaron Rowand to spring training? Give him a chance to make our team. Giants are paying him millions for 2012. Low risk...reward? I don't know. Haven't seen him play in awhile. At worst, White Sox fans can see him in spring training and he might motivate other players. Now that's a good idea. He'd be perfect if we trade Quentin to be a backup OF. -
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Dec 2, 2011 -> 07:43 PM) I used to root for Beckham like crazy, but now a deep malaise has set in and I couldn't care less anymore if he makes it or not. I'm kind of the same way. I love when he's hitting line drives, but last year was just pathetic except for his glove.

I have a feeling he's going to make a lot of deals in a "rebuild" mode, but I just hate this because we are stuck with Dunn and Rios. Since we are stuck with them, I think we should put off rebuilding and tweak. It makes no sense to have a batch of young players if we have to play Dunn n Rios every day. Let the trading begin.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 1, 2011 -> 06:04 PM) SI_JonHeyman Jon Heyman mark buehrle, who hinted about retirement within last yr, may be most popular big-time free agent. 14 teams alive. It's pretty obvious he's gone, isn't it? Do the Cubs want him? I'd like to see him stay in town where he belongs even if it means him pitching for them. Good luck to our team w/out Mark and Danks. We'll be trotting one of the worst rotations in baseball out there trying to win with our offense? Wow, get ready for a horrible horrible season. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 29, 2011 -> 02:17 PM) Season tickets, for most, are not a season-to-season decision. It is usually more long term. For one thing, season ticket holders are usually going to be pretty big fans, who go to a lot of games even if the team isn't playing well. For another - and this is key - when you choose not to renew your tickets, you go to the back of the line in seniority. That means back of the line in terms of seat location, as well as other benefits. That said, our group that shares a season plan did seriously discuss not renewing (we've had seasons since 2004). But we decided that, we always break even or better on the games we don't use, and the team seemed to make the right move firing Ozzie, so we elected to stick it out. We also have front row seats (UD) now, and we don't want to lose that. Makes sense. Thanx.

I hope he doesn't sign with a Central Division team. He'll be 6-0 against us every year. His style of pitching vs. our style of hitting. Yuk. We lose. -
QUOTE (chiguy79 @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 11:13 PM) About a 2.0, hence my season tickets are GONE! Seems insane to buy season tix for this bunch. Wouldn't a 10-game plan suffice? If somehow they seem like they actually are into it in April/early May u could buy more tix. If they are zombies like last year, u could pass and golf more and mow the lawn more.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 25, 2011 -> 11:30 PM) Only recently, you said that you'd stop bringing Ozzie into every thread you ruin. And yet you continue to do it. What about my statement ruined the thread? The only hope for this team is the new coaching staff right now. Reason to believe the new guys' different approach will wake up Dunn/Rios/Beckham, et. all. We have a new staff. I may not like it, but it's here. And until Kenny reworks the team, that's all we got.

QUOTE (VictoryMC98 @ Nov 25, 2011 -> 07:27 PM) Zero, as of right now the organization has yet to fix a single issue from the 2011 season. Not that they can, who is going to take Rios and Dunn. They still have RP issues, a 2b who can barley hit his weight, a 3b, who can play DEF, not offense. The only thing I am remotely excited about is to see if Sale is the real deal or a bust.. After the winter meetings, hopefully we will see how they shape this team. Nice post. Except most would say they fixed the biggest issue: Oz and Walker are gone. Really the only reason for hope is the new manager and new staff. That suddenly everybody will play well. Oops ... the new manager has been out of baseball a long time. Maybe since everybody thinks we'll suck, we'll be the surprise team. Other than that, there's really no reason for optimism.
-
QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Nov 22, 2011 -> 06:39 PM) Another team will offer more. I'd think 3 years at 14 mill a year would satisfy everybody since Mark always acts like he would be content retiring. If somebody gives him five years, they are crazy. Four years at 14 mill a year would be mighty generous; I would think Sox could live with it.
-
This is not a good time or offseason to be a Sox fan. Because of three unproductive zillionaires in Dunn, Rios and Peavy we can't keep Mark Buehrle. It's obvious Mark is gone. Why don't we just have a team of all unlikeable underachievers? Last place is our destiny it appears. When Mark signs somewhere else we ought to at least give Paulie a break and trade him to Arizona.
-
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 19, 2011 -> 08:59 PM) He won't. I didn't say Matt was the antichrist but he was not Matt-like last year IMO. I mean do you think Thornton was money last year?
-
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 19, 2011 -> 07:50 PM) Now lets all wait and see how long it takes Greg to realize he's incorrect... Cmon. Anybody with eyes could see Thornton was not the Matt of old last year and not because Pierre stunk a couple games in April.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 19, 2011 -> 02:29 AM) Fixed for ya Give me a break. Buehrle just good in 05? People hate on the guys who are reliable, the guys who have been around, the guys who deserve White Sox money. They like the unknown ... like Adam Dunn, until they get here and suck. Saying I love perhaps the best starter in White Sox history for just one season is bulls***. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 19, 2011 -> 02:31 AM) It's not that Thornton had a bad year last year, it just looks that way because Juan Pierre can't catch the ball. But you're not going to get a huge return for him since he has a quite expensive contract. That is a crock. Juan what, dropped 2 balls on him? Give me a break. Thornton was unreliable at best last year.
