Putting the Rios contract disaster into context...
greg775 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Rios and Dunn are so bad they don't even make me mad anymore. It's really humorous to see Alex loaf and poor Adam strike out, hit into DPs and walk. -
That game sucked. So now Humber apparently is toast. He's got to go middle relief. Oh wait, we traded Jackson, so now we have four starters. What a great great organization we root for. Can you imagine paying good money to see that horses*** game tonight? Oh well, at least fans got to see two (solo) home runs.

Kenny's timing is so s***ty. Humber appears to be a middle reliever now. He can't go five-plus innings anymore. So he trades Jackson. Now we have 4 starters instead of six. Amazing. This wouldn't matter if we all agreed the Sox were going nowhere and out of it. One problem with that. For MONTHS people on this board have insisted we are IN the race. What gives? Now all of a sudden we are out of it, when KW and Oz acted like we were in it virtually all year??? This organization truly is a joke. How bout call up Viciedo about 4 weeks ago? Nah we couldn't do that for some reason. -
QUOTE (daa84 @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 03:39 PM) hypertension most commonly has no symptoms in and of itself. This is why it gets checked at pretty much every doc visit. That said, those with HTN often have other comorbid conditions (high cholesterol, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, etc), and those things can have presenting symptoms. If you have a hypertensive crisis (generally a systolic over 200) there are usually symptoms (headache, palpitations, changes in vision, etc). This is generally a medical emergency though, and if this was the case, you would have been admitted to a hospital (as was the case someone mentioned above) Likely the symptoms residing are a result of having a healthier lifestyle (not drinking, eating better, maybe working out) which all have multi-system effects and in general are going to make you feel better from top to bottom. The best initial treatment (i'm sure the docs said this) is lifestyle modification - and taking the steps you said previously, cutting back on sodium, exercising, etc. If this doesn't work, they will treat it pharmacologically. The drug you are on Bystolic (nebivolol) is not a statin as mentioned above. It is a beta-blocker which are class of drugs that are used to treat a variety of cardiovascular conditions. Statins are used for high cholesterol, not high blood pressure. I'm assuming that your doc would have checked your cholesterol levels and that they are probably ok otherwise he would have started these. Hypertension is a vascular disease, meaning it effects your blood vessels. As such, it has an effect on pretty much every single organ system. Long standing high BP can cause kidney damage, put you at risk for strokes (due to rupture of blood vessels in the brain), and most commonly it causes increased strain on our heart. As a result of the increased strain the heart enlarges (just like any muscle that has an increase in workload). when the heart enlarges it becomes less effective, and ultimately can lead to heart failure. As bad as your experiences with the docs have been (which is awful and unacceptable btw), it is important to continue to go. In your case the good thing is that you are getting it treated. The bad thing about not going to the doc for 20 years, is that your BP could have been elevated for 10 years (which will take its toll on the body). hopefully its a relatively new thing and if you are compliant with the drugs and lifestyle modifications, hypertension can be effectively treated. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 04:12 PM) I blame greg's problems on Bobby Jenks, Ozzie Guillen, Greg Walker and Obama. Greg, not sure what to say. I know when I was teaching, my first year in a public high school, I went from 120/80 to 130/80. I'm borderline on some of my cholesterol numbers because I have had the most atrocious diet in the world for most of the last 20-25 years...but I try to counterbalance that with exercise as much as possible. And my BP and pulse rates are always normal or within "normal range." My father died of a massive heart attack at 63, and my mom's on Lipitor/Crestor (as well as mild diabetes), so I've been watching things more carefully now that I'm 41. She's 82, by the way. And I did have kidney stones 4 years ago, but that's from my obsession with caffeine/Dr. Pepper and drinking 2-3 sodas per day, which I know is horrible but I can't break that habit. Thanks for the 2 great posts.

Did AJ get enough love for last night's blast? If he doesn't hit that, we lose to Wakefield and everybody is sooo pissed. Nice bomb, AJ.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 10:44 PM) Sox get $23.00 for parking far and away the highest in MLB in the revenue stream. 23 bucks. They'll round it off to 25 next year. What a joke. So you get 4 college kids driving to a game in the summer from suburbia like we used to do in the day. Just the parking at 6 bucks a head would piss us off. Beers are now 10 bucks? Tickets a lot? Do college kids still go to games a bunch at these prices?

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 05:10 PM) Most White Sox fans probably don't even realize our streak vs. the Red Sox is that good, but they have no trouble reciting by memory how terrible we are vs. the Twins. I know you think they are different. The Red Sox are a much better team than the Twins, and it's very surprising we've had that level of success over 16 games vs. them. I think most of us applaud the record vs. Boston but are appalled by our mark vs. Minnie. Another faceplant soon will be coming up vs. Minnie since we still don't have Viciedo.

I can't imagine baseball cares about families at all. No family with little kids wants to go sit in the upper tank with dad/mom dropping 500 bucks. Middle class wives I know would have a seizure if hubby even suggested a 500 buck outing. And to watch that s***ty offense for that kind of jack? Baseball caters to the businesses who buy tickets and the businessmen who buy four season tickets a year and go spend a mint on beer, food, etc.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 06:25 PM) But because he had a few bad outings and had a tendency to walk hitters, he was never appreciated here. Ridiculous. I don't think there was a lot of Edwin hate despite his annoying approach on the mound. He was good. It just was a horrible trade to acquire him in the first place. And this trade to get rid of his salary before he hits free agency seems equally stupid. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 07:27 PM) Lillibridge should have been starting last night as well as tonight. What's wrong with DeAza? What's with the Lilly love? He and his big bat can't hit da ball.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 04:51 PM) If you're anywhere on the south side of Chicago or the southern suburbs you know the economy is the reason. 1.) What do ya mean? Are stores all closed? Just wondering. I would think it's the economy. I hear people b****ing about movie prices. Why would anybody go to a major league baseball game at full price? Most people want good seats not upper tank. If good seats cost that kind of money, people probably take their family or nephew once or twice a year and go to minor league games the other times. 2.) Even Hawk said last night this has been the most frustrating season he's ever been part of. You watch this team and you figure they'll be no hit before they score 2 runs sometimes. Or they seem to have one 3-run inning and that's it. Very frustrating team unless u LOVE pitching.

QUOTE (The '05 Sound @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 07:00 AM) I dont even know what to say to this, I cant really imagine what the phillies would give us but it cant be anything significant and if the braves dont want anyone touching their top 4, and the next best is Beachy who has done great his past 2 starts. It will be interesting to see what happens with this, then again s*** can get pretty crazy at weddings. I guess the Sox figure Sale can aptly replace Thornton the rest of this year and Viciedo can aptly replace CQ. Hope we get a good haul. These are 2 pretty good players. I guess if he gets a major haul it'd help set us up for the future. I hope KW doesn't get robbed blind.

QUOTE (MAX @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 05:17 AM) I still don't think its smart to write off adam dunn. If he hit 25 homers the rest of the season we'd probably win it all. But it seems like the best we can hope for him is an occasional single off the wall.

QUOTE (buhbuhburrrrlz @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 04:43 AM) blah rios is playing tomorrow then UGH wouldn't be so bad if he didn't suck so much in the OF this year Hopefully he'll be fired up and blast 3 hits and knock in four ribbies. Funny how we never expect a day like that from any of our hitters not named Paulie or Carlos or Lexi on rare occasion.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 04:44 AM) I expect a good haul for Floyd and Q, and kings ransom for Danks. It's what this team needs. Is Kenny capable of getting a king's ransom for anybody? -

QUOTE (Paulstar @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 03:20 AM) Well, this team NEEDS to add at least either a third baseman or center fielder with some sort of offensive output to even think about being a serious contender. Also, Dayan needs to come up and start playing 75% of the time (Rios finally got shown the bench, now its time for Dunn). You and I agree. We have the pitching it seems. Now all we need to do is bench Dunn for Dayan and acquire a 3B or a 2B who can hit the f***ing ball and we'd be OK. If DeAza can't cut it (I loved his clutch home run) than we sub Danks for him. -
Sox/Danks have talked numbers but "nothing too serious"

QUOTE (kageman129 @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 01:02 AM) Seriously, lets do this . . . I mean, I've been hoping for a rebuild mode for the last 4 years. I'm tired of watching this losing baseball (or barely winning baseball) . . . Lets get some young blood in here. Sell off Danks, Quentin, Thornton . . . I know Rios, Dunn and Peavy are going nowhere . . . But try to completely retool. I make sure to attend as many games as I can, but watching the same type of team every year is making me not want to go. I'd be more inclined to go if I could watch some up and coming type guys. Who do we get for the Yankees for Danks? 3-4 guys we've never heard of who will never make the bigs? I'd rather keep him and let him go free agent when the time comes. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 03:16 AM) The problem is that there's just no way that John Danks is worth $80-90 million over 5 years to the White Sox. To about 5-7 other organizations in baseball, arguably yes. If that's the asking price, I'm probably holding onto him until this offseason and then getting the best possible return, unless you're bowled over in the next 2 days. How many teams are willing to pay 14 million a year over five years for a pitcher nowadays? Baseball needs to change its salary structure rules. The Peavy deal again is proof you can't give pitchers that kind of loot. If Danks is going to get that kind of money, you are right ... bye bye. It is nice tho to have some starters who can go deep in games. It's going to be an rude awakening for us fans when we have hacks starting for us again. -
Some good quotes in here about Rios from Ozzie in chicago tribune. He's not a happy camper according to Oz, but Oz gives a great line about telling Rios to do something to prove his worth. If Rios thinks it's wise to have that horrific batting stance, I don't see how he's ever gonna hit again. Also a nice note at how hot Danks II is in the notes at the bottom. CHICAGO — Alex Rios’ time on the White Sox bench could be brief if not finished. With three left-handed starters on the horizon, Rios will be back in the lineup Saturday after sitting the last two games, although he appears to be in a platoon with Alejandro De Aza — at best. Rios and manager Ozzie Guillen spoke about the veteran’s sitting and “we’re very clear about it, very clear,” Guillen said. “Alex is not a happy camper. I don’t expect him to be,” Guillen said. “We wish he was playing better. ... I talked to him (and said), ’Give me some bullets, give me something (so) people don’t criticize me because you’re playing.’ “He has to look himself in the mirror too. ... I’m not benching people when they’re playing well.” Rios, who declined to comment, is hitting .208 and just .147 in the last 17 games. New first things: Long before the start of Friday’s game, utility infielder/outfielder Brent Lillibridge was working on ground balls and throwing to second base — from first base. “I mean, when the opportunity arises and we have to pinch-hit for Paulie (Konerko), I have to be ready to come in,” he said with a laugh. Lillibridge has started 31 games this season, one at second base and the others at the three outfield positions. But he has played sparingly lately, hitting just .176 in his last 30 games. “Any way I can try to get in the lineup,” he said. “I have to do what they want.” Extra innings: Dayan Viciedo has begun taking batting practice at Triple-A Charlotte after missing several games with a bruised thumb. ... Doug Davis, released by the Cubs, is 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA at Charlotte. ... During a seven-game hitting streak at Charlotte, Jordan Danks was 10-for-21 with two homers and five RBIs. ... Before the acquisition of Oak Forest’s Jason Frasor, the last Illinois natives to play for the Sox were Ryan Bukvich (Naperville), Mike Myers (Arlington Heights) and Bret Prinz (Chicago Heights) in 2007.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 04:05 AM) Our offense sucks with CQ. Unless Dunn, Rios (barf), and 3-4 other guys start hitting at the same time, we're not going anywhere. I don't think this team has a chance in hell of getting to the World Series. If you can get pieces to set your franchise up from '12 and beyond, you pounce. I don't really want to see 10 more shutouts the rest of the season. Dealing CQ for pitching will not be good. -

QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 03:47 AM) I'm still in sell mode since I think the Tigers will get a pitcher and win the division. If I was bowled over, I'd be willing to trade Quentin, Thornton, Floyd, and Danks. What I think will happen now--they'll stand pat, or a very minor deal. I don't know about trading both Floyd and Danks. You can go from a mediocre .500 team to a really really bad team in a hurry if suddenly you give up too much starting pitching. I realize Sox need to save money and all that, but do the Sox want to be a .400 team next year? -
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 03:57 AM) I dont understand, I thought the Red Sox had an amazing offense and the White Sox only had a 10 percent chance to win and Gavin was a mental midget in important games. Does not compute I'd rather not hear any more from the Floyd haters. I was thinking of that mental midget stuff as well. He's pretty good pitcher, not deserving of any mental midget crap IMO.
