  1. Should have happened a long time ago when he was alive. One of the most electric players in sports history. Well deserved. Hope his family enjoys this forever. Anybody who saw Dick Allen play for the Sox realizes he is a Hall of Famer.
  2. I wonder why Walker stunk last year after being pretty good the previous two seasons. He's 32 now. 7.10 ERA last season. Beni actually is one of the Sox better hitters with 20 homers a year ago. I've never liked him of course but he actually would be missed in this pathetic everyday lineup.
  3. The fact the Sox couldn't get one run in 9 innings that day to force an automatic Game Five victory with Hoyt is one of the most disappointing days the White Sox have experienced. That team was built to win a WS and should have won a World Series. Disgusting to waste BB's performance. Also the biggest baserunning blunder in Sox history if not all of MLB history.
  4. He missed the 2020 season. So I assume he's already had the requisite Tommy John surgery? That's a lotta money. Is he the 30-year-old pitcher who won 33 games in 2017 and 18 and 11 last year with 3.91 ERA or the guy with a 6.65 ERA in 2023?
  5. Good. We don't need a Golden Bat. Terrible proposal.
  6. What a great hitter. I remember this the most about Melton, courtesy of Lip's post: "September 30, 1971 - When Bill Melton smashed a home run on the last day of the season off the Brewers Bill Parsons in the third inning, he became the first Sox player to ever win a home run championship. Melton hit three home runs in the final two games to pass former Sox player Norm Cash and Reggie Jackson for the title. Typically, White Sox, he only had 33, the lowest total for a champ since 1965." He patrolled 3B the years the Sox had an astroturf infield and grass outfield for some reason. That 'almost' ruined the experience at Comiskey as it was ugly configuration with turf, then grass in the outfield. Not to be preachy but it's sad to see the Sox have no players to root for now like Melton, just stiffs on the 40 man for the most part. Bill played for that abysmal Sox team but still kept the fans' interest cause of Melton's homers. Lots of kids copied Melton's batting stance. Rest in peace to a Sox legend.
  7. Does he wanna play up there? Taxes.
  8. I don't like it much at all. In actuality, you'd probably save the Golden At Bat to the 8th or 9th inning of a game. In the ninth there'd be no reason to not use your Golden At Bat because there's no reason to save it. So let's say Sox are trailing 2-1 and bases are loaded with two out in the ninth. Our manager goes with Luis Robert instead of say, Vargas. That'd be exciting, sure. But there has to be a penalty like somebody said if the Golden Batter fails. Maybe a team mascot could race out of the dugout and smash a pie in Robert's face. The organist could play the theme from the Three Stooges. I dunno. I guess I could live with the rule. The example in the article was dumb, using Aaron Judge as an example. He was pretty lousy most of the playoffs/Series. He wouldn't be much of a Golden At Bat guy.
  9. I see almost all the private schools won their finals against public schools. I read O'Brien's story on how the Illinois state high school assn needs to fix some things. All but one game was a blowout and the close game was two private schools playing each other. Q: To Harry or WhiteSox: How's BR look in hoops this year. Contender, pretender?
  10. I think in my next life I'd be one of those people that never left their hometown. I think that'd be a good choice for Life No. 2. Life No. 3 I'd be a carefree idiot who worked as a bartender til I was 40 then moved to Hawaii and owned a store that rents out surfboards and boogie boards. Being a responsible adult seems overrated.
  11. My dad could be a mean MF but he never hit or spanked me or my sibs or my mom which was appreciated. He would yell a lot and basically instilled fear though. To each his/her own but spanking seems wrong to me. But that's just me. I don't hold it against any parent. I would guess it's pretty effective though.

I love how many of us love to 'escape' from family at times at holiday gatherings. Not that we dislike 'em, but 'peace and quiet' sounds good sometimes. The best T-giving in Chicago IMO would be family there with plenty turkey, dressing (dressing is a southside word I believe, not stuffing), brown gravy, hot rolls, green bean casserole and whatever dessert you might want. ... I'm sure the most tolerable dinners would be those in which the guests drink a few beers. Back in the day we had some memorable dinners with uncles putting down beer after beer then capping the day/night with poker.

Cool, White Sox. You obviously are a 'holiday guy' and love good food and family. You shoulda invited me over for turkey dinner! Kidding but your description of food makes me want some.
  14. I don't really care he's kept so many coaches. What I am wondering is this a cost saving move? Were the coaches all under 1 year deals or would they have to paid settlements to the assistants if they canned them?
  15. Can you imagine the atmosphere in the Sox organization right now? When there's a mandate to not increase payroll and the worst 40 man roster in league history, it must be constant negativity every day. We do have a new manager so he's got to at least convince the players they have a chance if they play hard every day. I'd assume the manager is upbeat and has a personality.
  16. Next eight weeks should say a lot. Well know our W/L fate by Feb. 1.
  17. Second round draft pick. Another guy to throw into the mix and see if he can hit.
  18. I'll stop defending myself. My views aren't worth a discussion apparently. Let me just say the Bears next coach probably will have a similar resume to 'flus: That is: 30 years of coaching experience, 13 in the NFL and 17 at the collegiate level. He came from the Colts where he worked four seasons as defensive coordinator. Good luck with the next coordinator hire. The Bears actually should jump in and hire a retread 'head coach' from the past. Personally I'd go with Belichick cause he's available and has won Super Bowls. That's not worth discussing either I guess.
  19. If Eberflus is that bad, that miserable of a coach as the yahoo report suggests, then the guy who hired him should be canned as well. My contention is he's just another guy, not as bad as a Bevington or a Pedro, just another football guy, and good luck with the next offensive or defensive coordinator that gets hired by the woebegone Bears. Might as well hire Belichick if you want a serious program builder.
  20. Lipman's post right above yours would suggest otherwise. The coach is not the problem. You show me a good clock management coach. They don't exist. Obviously embarrassing the Bears on Turkey Day and again having a miserable record in year three arguably is a good reason to get rid of Eberflus. I'm just saying he and his staff aren't the problem. And the end of that other game was a true fluke. Again a fireable offense in year three to lose on a Hail Mary? Sure but the problems go much deeper. Not sure why my comments on this issue are deemed so sad sack and pitiful by you guys. What if these two things happened to a first-year coach? Would you want him fired too?
  21. Just based on his performance I would NEVER give this guy 20 mill a year. Never. He has much to prove.
  22. Respond to my statement that the only thing this firing does is satisfies/quiets the fans who are so mad about the end of the two games this season. One was blind luck. Yesterdays ... the analyticians who like/love draft picks should be happy we lost anyway. Bears were not gonna make the playoffs if they kicked the field goal yesterday and won in OT. Now they get a better draft pick prolly. Eberneezer is that bad a coach?? Our savior QB has a lot of work to do. He's no lock at greatness which reflects badly on the GM not coach Eberneezer. I'm not trolling. I'm just mad the Bears stink again and management thinks firing him means something positive. It means nothing.
  23. I think if they trade Crochet and to a certain extent Robert the team will win in the 40s again. Loss of Crochet will guarantee a lot more games the Sox won't be competitive in. Robert is no good but he the best of our lineup. It's hard to put together a worse everyday lineup than the Sox project to be in 2025. And the pitching staff a bunch of no names, although some of the up and comers are supposed to be good. ... Like last year, no aspect of the team, pitching, hitting or D projects to be above average.
  24. I was going to start a new topic "The Bears" but I didn't want to get buried by those on here who hate new threads. ... So here is my take. The firing of the Bears coach is ridiculous. So it makes a whole city (those who follow sports) feel better. Big deal. The Bears' problems have little to do with coaching. They have to do with talent and talent evaluation. I'm sure the no name stiffs who coach the Bears including Matt Eberflus are the same as most of the no name coaches in the league. They are OK. Let's face it. No coaches have a good command on clock management. They all choke on that part of the game. So at least judge the Bears ho-hummers on other areas that matter a bit. Clock management? Name a coach who knows what he's doing in that regard on any level. They all fail at it including Eberneezer. So the Bears continue the parade of coaches since Ditka. Big deal. There are no coaches out there who are going to cure what ails the Bears. This time maybe they should hire some young young young guy like Arizona State's coach or go the oppo way and hire some 70 year old timer like Belichick. Hiring some no name coordinator of the Lions or some team will mean NOTHING. Matt Eberflus or 5 other no names cannot cure what ails the Bears. ... But everybody feels better in starting over after yesterday's turkey day debacle. Great. Still won't win a Super Bowl. There's only one Andy Reid. Might as well try Belichick this time. But the Bears would never do that. They'd never hire somebody who actually has won before somewhere.
  25. What's with the Prep Bowl being at Fornelli Field instead of Soldier Field? It's not special when one of the two teams gets to host it. It's too hard to win a state title in Illinois so let the Public and Catholic League's best of the rest get to play in Soldier Field like before.
