  1. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jan 10, 2018 -> 03:10 PM) You don't even read what I type, do you? Very few people read what people type. I am constantly amused at one or two sentences of a 10 paragraph post (by me) suddenly becomes my entire post and my entire position. Probably is a good reminder to keep posts short.
  2. QUOTE (KagakuOtoko @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 10:19 PM) greg of course there are people who love trump and those that hate him. This is has been the case for most politicians throughout history. You really gotta get out of your bubble. I am worried about you. I thought Trump was different. To me and the stuff I read (CNN, etc) I read a daily barrage of negative stuff on Trump. Can't remember anything good said about him in a long time, hence it seemed to me he was despised by about all. That's why those peeps in Texas surprised me by enthusiastically saying they liked him.
  3. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 10:04 PM) In 5 of 7 blown saves, Soria allowed 1 or 0 runs. Relievers will give up a run here or there. He only really had 2 very bad blown saves. That's why context is important. Roberto Osuna had 10 blown saves this year but I'd take him closing games for the White Sox in a second. Interesting.
  4. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 11:01 PM) Its all just opinion. Itd be like asking if you were happy after the last play of the National Championship game last night. Georgia fans will answer much differently than Alabama fans. True. I just have been influenced so much by Hollywood and the daily barrage of anti-Trump articles that I assumed everybody in the USA despised him. I remain a bit worried about the North Korea situation. Trump is definitely capable of a first strike on NK and that would not be good. In fact it might be the end of us all. He orders a strike and next thing you know we hear they've sent a few nukes our way and our defense system has no idea how to knock those nukes out of the sky.
  5. Is this board truly reflective of the country's opinion of Trump? I was in Dallas area over the weekend and I asked two rich oil people (one man, one woman) what they thought of Trump. One immediately declared: "I like him," adding that he says some dumb things on Twitter but aside from that she liked him. Then the other person said the economy actually was improving and he also liked Trump. Then I hear he gets half cheers/half boos as the national title game. You'd think it would be 90 percent boos if you read this board and listen to the pundits and Hollywood types bash him daily. I know Hollywood tore into Trump at the Golden Globes, but Hollywood should be more humble and silent right now with the scandal going on. I'm just saying ... has Trump had some accomplishments that are making 50 percent of Americans think he's OK to good?
  6. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 10:48 PM) He wasn't making that statement meaning he actually believes it. He's saying he doesn't know. Thanks soxfan. I wish peeps would read entire threads for comprehension. One poster was implying I had some reason for bashing Oprah and I'm not even bashing Oprah. I respect Oprah and like her for gosh sakes. If she ran against Trump and she did OK in the debates etc., I'd probably vote for her. I know I wouldn't vote for Donald. I didn't last time. I sat it out rather than waste my vote on Jesse V who had no chance as a write in.
  7. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 09:27 PM) I didn't see any dissenting opinions. I can tell you when I had mine, it was the same reaction as with Soria. Also, not too many wanted to hear anything negative about Zach Duke. I don't know what it is with these guys that make posters fall in love? Currently the board is heavily tilted with fans of the front office, close to them doing no wrong (there are some posters not crazy bout the Rutherford trade, but that's been about the only dissent). This trade is fine cause I never heard of the guy we gave up and the one reliever may be useful. I would have been silent on the trade cept for the fact Soria has pitched out here and fans hate him as much as I did Rios. There's also the backup quarterback syndrome again and the lure of the mysterious. Plus apparently Soria's peripherals are still good. I still think blowing 7 saves is a decent chunk. You know, everybody talks about his one horrid outing exploded his ERA. Doesn't it go both ways? How many times did he enter in a 7-1 game and pitch 1-2 perfect innings and those numbers also have to be included. I trust you all that his peripherals are OK to good and he could improve. I said in my initial thread never underestimate Coop. I actually hope I'm wrong. If Soria returns to the old old Soria form and he's our closer and we are saving game after game, cool. White sox win the pennant would be fine with me!
  8. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 07:06 PM) Wait, what? Under what circumstances and accomplishments would someone consider Oprah the smartest woman alive??? Oprah is a great actor, a great interviewer/talk show host, seemingly a very nice person, made a ton of money for herself and charity. I merely "wondered" if she is into the world scene enough to tackle some of the political stuff besides social issues. I said I have no idea. She might be the smartest woman alive and know everything you need to know to kick ass in a debate on foreign affairs for instance. I know many people don't know s*** about world stage, like me, and would have no business even trying in a debate format.
  9. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 12:52 PM) And this is where I quit reading this post. You should read the whole post. I said Trump is bad first of all. But you can't admit he knows ENOUGH about the world and politics to not completely embarass himself?? He knows enough to be in the game. I'm saying a lot of people (not sure of Oprah's proficiency in this area) have little knowledge of world leaders and the global geographical map even and they might get torn apart in debates. Why was my post wrong? Trump embarrasses himself A LOT but not to an extreme over simple world leaders/geography. Oprah may be the smartest woman alive in all areas. If so my bad. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 03:21 PM) Dang if there was a prop bet for who would have started the Oprah for President thread I probably would have bet on caulfield and lost. People have a "thing" about starting threads on a message board. Puzzles me. I fear starting threads. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 04:22 PM) I should have quit when I saw the poster. Gee thanks. It's in the news big time and I wanted a discussion. Instead ... wham! QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 04:24 PM) So wait just one second. Wait. Wait. Wait. I'm seriously asking this. Did I just read this? A guy who says in the same sentence that Donald Trump is well informed enough but then wonders whether or not a different celebrity is well informed enough? A guy who we begged to pay attention to policy last year who then harped on how he doesn't want to be PC? I wonder why he might apply such a different standard to someone like Oprah Winfrey. OMG. This is why I can't win a debate. All of a sudden I'm anti Oprah?? I like her and said so in the post. Yes I wondered if Oprah can handle debate issues or not. Again, I'm not into the world scene and I'd get torched. Trump is OK enough that he can talk about world leaders, countries, issues, etc. My "wonderment" was if Oprah would be great on social issues and need a running mate like Gore to take care of the normal political stuff. Thanks everybody for hating me some more.
  10. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 06:42 PM) More talk of a "bloody nose" strike plan against North Korea This is such a bad idea, and it's coming from the putative "adults" in the room. On the one hand, they're regularly pointing out how irrational and unstable Kim is, so they're planning to...punch him in the face? And on the other hand, how could the DPRK ever really know that it's a "limited" strike versus the opening salvo in a regime change effort? There's no realistic mechanisms where the conflict doesn't immediately escalate to something bigger. I'm not in favor of military action against that nut just yet. Please Mr. Trump and advisors figure out a better way to hurt this guy. I don't want nukes being launched anytime soon.It will be the end of the world as we know it. Now we do have to stop crazy Kim "somehow."
  11. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 06:36 PM) Can someone please explain to me why it seems like so many people dislike this trade? In essence, the Sox traded a superfluous middle infielder for two relievers. One of which is lefty and is pretty good and the other is only a short term piece. The Sox have the payroll flexibility to absorb Soria's contract and the Sox got a bit of money back in the deal anyway. Relief pitching was a massive need and Hahn killed two birds with one stone. Am I missing something? The trade is fine. I just can't stand the idea of watching Soria in a Sox uniform. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 07:40 PM) No, the entire crux of the argument is, while I like the trade, I think Soria sucks, and people view crap on other teams a lot differently than they view it on their own. White Sox fans are unique in that they appreciate others' crap a lot more than their own. The White Sox have had a whole lot of whipping boys with excellent peripherals. But the dream is Soria will be flipped for a prospect who will help the White Sox contend for years. I hope that happens, but it is a dream. The Sox gave up a rule 5 unclaimed and got another decent reliever and cash to get him. I agree with this post.
  12. Am I wrong in thinking that was one helluva football game? As somebody with no ties to either team and no hatred for either school I thought it was a compelling comeback victory. Let's rate ourselves as sports fans, what type we are. When the game ended did you think: "What a choke job by Georgia?" Or "What a comeback victory by Alabama?" I chose the latter. I really did see a team completely wear out another team. Alabama even overcame the missed FG. It seemed like Alabama was playing a high school team the latter portions of the game. Georgia has nothing going offensively or defensively during a long long period of time that constituted the comeback. Kudos to Bama.
  13. Well, after her great speech at the Golden Globes, Steadman said yes she is considering running for President. NBC in fact had to remove a Tweet basically endorsing her. It wasn't NBC news, just NBC. So I guess we are in an era we will be nominating celebrities and they will be the favorites. I mean I like Oprah enough but good luck to Oprah on all the many issues you have to have knowledge of to be President. I realize Trump is probably the worst president ever and all that, but he has enough of a knowledge of the world and the economy and some other things that he doesn't completely embarass himself. I'm not suggesting Oprah has no knowledge of these things, she might, and if so could be the most brilliant President ever. But if she's just a nice, upstanding, beautiful, giving person with little knowledge of the world scene, she could get eaten alive in the debates. Again no offense to Oprah, I do love her too, but is she amazing on the issues? I mean I know nothing about history or the world map. Some people like me I hate to say just don't care about those things. I would get embarrassed in such a forum quizzing me on world issues and leaders. Oprah has made a fine living as an interviewer and entrepreneur and actor. Does she know issues and poliics? Perhaps our presidential elections of the future should consist of a lovable celebrity like Oprah or Hanks (who I presume would be strongest on social issues) paired with a lifelong politican like Gore who can "run the show" behind the scenes. Please don't consider this thread frivolous (I know many on here get mad when folks like me start a new thread). I have heard many celebrities now begging Oprah to run and like I said, NBC tweeted its support. Also she already has a theme for the campaign. It was her saying the saying, "A New Day is On The Horizon." I think NBC even said OUR president Oprah. If she is seriously considering running I just want to know a.) are you appalled at the new normal? Celebs running for high office. b.) do you think Oprah knows her stuff? c.) Is Oprah Winfrey going to win and be our next President? Think about all the things that have to happen for her to win the Democratic nomination over folks like Bernie. Maybe the ticket should be Oprah/Bernie. So please let's discuss this. I will start by saying I am guessing Oprah would beat Trump but I need some convincing she is fit to join the world of politics. p.s. I did just read a story that suggested the Democrats have a lot of possible candidates and Oprah might actually get in the way of some up and coming political Democrat stars. This puts a weird thought in my head. If Trump doesn't want to run again (and why would he?) maybe the new normal in the Republican party is a celebrity. Have Oprah be the Republican candidate. Then in 8 years the Republicans can go for another celebrity like Billy Joel. Just rotation Republican presidents who are celebs. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/sou...ID=ansmsnnews11 http://www.latimes.com/opinion/editorials/...1089-story.html
  14. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jan 8, 2018 -> 02:39 PM) Greg’s line of reasoning makes no logical sense, and it’s frustrating to hear him consistently ignore repeated attempts to explain what everyone else is talking about, but I don’t think he’s trolling here. I don’t think he’s said much that’s overly antagonistic, at least not at first. There are many times when he has been out of line, but this isn’t one of them. Thanks. I thought it only logical to inform everybody what the peeps in KC were saying about finally getting rid of Soria. If the stats don't prove me right, fine, but I do think it's significant the guy blew 7 saves. It makes the home fans believe he's worthless and he's definitely the scapegoat in KC. Again if the stats don't back me up, whatever. My eye test told me Fathom could line doubles off Joaquim Soria last season.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 02:14 AM) He could have made a ton of money holding a clipboard on Sundays. Ask Mike Glennon. You make a good point. Best job in the world is backup quarterback as long as you don't play. Again, the concussion thing is too serious.
  16. QUOTE (Sleepy Harold @ Jan 6, 2018 -> 10:53 PM) BTW, David Robertson blew 7 saves in BOTH 2015 & 2016 with the Sox and Jenks blew 6 in 2009, which isn't 7 but damn close, so they both must have had terrible seasons despite what the statistics may say right? According to this board they both were awful. I defended Jenks day after day on here and got killed for it. Ditto Robertson. He was a whipping boy on here in 2015 and I said he was fine.
  17. QUOTE (2005thxfrthmmrs @ Jan 6, 2018 -> 03:43 PM) Dang Greg, let me see if I understand you here. You WERE planning to get MLB TV but now that the Sox have added two relievers better than Albuquerque and Covey and who won't make you cringe as much without giving up any MLB talent, you are deciding you aren't watching the Sox next year? I am a little lost. You guys are too buried in stats and have to discuss the human element. Picture greg watching a Royals game or driving in the car listening and watching Soria blow 7 saves each of the past two seasons. I'd laugh at the reaction on the talk shows the next day. Soria was that bad in KC. I don't care how much you guys say I'm full of bleep. I know what I see and hear and 7 saves each season are a lot of blown saves. Heaven forbid my guy Bobby Jenks blow 7 saves or even David Robertson who I also liked. Now Soria was great his first stint in KC. His second tenure there they were dying to shed that salary and got rid of him, unfortunately to my team. If somehow he's great again, awesome. Never underestimate Coop. But it's tough for me to think about paying for mlb and seeing Soria come in games. Cause he's been that bad of late. I'm not the devil. I am not rooting for the Sox to lose. Heaven forbid I've been one of the lone voices of fandom (with El Rockin) cheering for the team to win "meaningless" games and not caring about draft picks. Somebody should do a thread ranking and rating all the posters like past years. I am confident at least my passion for the Sox would be recognized. Go Soria! Go Sox!
  18. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 6, 2018 -> 04:05 AM) I think most folks would admit he’s a calculated risk. What people are objecting to is an emotionally-charged aversion to him which belies the objective evidence at hand. What you guys are telling me is you didn't want me to shed some light on the fact KC fans wanted to run Soria out of town last season and blamed him for everything. I should have stifled myself I guess. Everybody from little kids to little ol ladies wanted to run Soria out of Kansas City. I enjoy reading all the stats in these threads. I guess you'll just have to wait and see. Again it doesn't matter cause we are a 60ish win team again so let Soria pitch all he wants. Those of you who root for losses will enjoy seeing him serve up meat ... UNLESS Mr. Coop works magic. ... I'll stop now. But you have to admit you can do a lot of things with stats and apologists have really been trying their best to support Jack with stats in this thread.
  19. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 06:50 PM) Greg I just want to know if you think Soria is better or worse than Al Albuquerque or Dylan Covey. Well I would say he's better than those 2. Those 2 make me cringe. I'm just telling you Soria to a Royals fan is Rios to Greg. If you remember how I despised Rios. Soria is just a gascan. That doesn't mean I mind the trade. The trade is fine since we got that other guy and aren't trying to win anyway. Plus I've said 5 times Coop may fix Soria. I love Coop the grouch. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 07:02 PM) Teams don't give away useful valuable pieces to dump a contract that is reasonable with a guy whose peripherals suggest will be halfway valuable. If Greg is pissed at the trade, I disagree with him. If he just thinks Soria sucks, he has a point. Anything you get from him is gravy, but chances are it won't be much. I just think Soria sucks and can attest to you KC fans are rejoicing at dumping him and that salary. QUOTE (Dunt @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 07:04 PM) 1.) Soria is not unknown, he's literally been in the division since 2007 (with the exception of 2013) 2.) Soria is not awful. His career numbers argue quite the opposite actually. 2.86 ERA, 3.07 FIP, 3.28 xFIP, 9.62 K/9, 2.71 BB/9, 204 S over 573 IP. Prettay, prettay good. 3.) Can you please provide us with some first hand accounts of Soria being a bad clubhouse guy? I'm sorry about No. 3. I just am repeating what I heard on the talk shows today that he was a bad clubhouse guy. I may be trashing him wrongly there since I don't know the guy. My bad. Forgive me. I'll let you know if the talk shows give better examples. Again I apologize to Jack, his name here given him by Ned. Jack Soria. Please strike that clubhouse thing from the record as I am repeating talk show banter there. Sorry. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 07:46 PM) Every fan base has their whipping boys. These tend to be irrational and based on single instances instead of rational and all encompassing. This sounds like exactly what is happening here. Maybe. I'll give you that. Maybe. As a Sox fan though, I'd laugh watching end of KC games and see Soria simply be unable to get through a half inning without giving up walks, hits and runs. He was really a lousy Royal the second go round. Earlier in his career when KC had him he was good. Now? Ugh he's bad. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jan 6, 2018 -> 12:30 AM) People just like to b**** and moan or be contratian. I get it to a degree but there's no downside here Peter was never, ever going to contribute in a big role on a Sox team with Moncada at 2B and there is no long term commitment to either of these relievers. Agreed. We're not trying to win so no biggie. My problem is Soria (to me) is so bad he's affecting my decision whether to buy mlb.com or not. I don't need the angst.
  20. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 04:10 PM) Greg, stop. I don't need to ask Caulfield or any dumbass Kansas City goobers s***. You are acting like a clown. I know, I should be used to it by now but I'm trying to catch up on an informative thread and you've hijacked it with nonsense. Geez. I'm just trying to add some context here. I live here and I'm just relaying the relief of Royals fans getting rid of Soria. He was the whipping boy of fans all last year (much like me despising Dunn that one year and me despising Rios, etc) and the talk shows are blazing. Do you guys check Twitter? Type in Soria's name for gosh sakes. I don't like being negative Nancy but I'm just passing along what I KNOW from living here. Soria was booed; Soria was despised; Soria was a bad clubhouse guy; Soria was the scapegoat for all the Royals' bullpen woes. Soria will make me consider whether to buy mlb.com this year cause he will drive me insane UNLESS as I pointed out Coop fixes him. I also said the other reliever we got sounds fine. Read my posts before you guys say I'm totally out of line. Don't you want info passed on? We can't be Sox shills all the time for gosh sakes. Be reasonable. He's awful; Coop easily could fix him. He's so bad greg doesn't want to watch him pitch on mlb.com in a Sox uniform so shoot me. You guys over-react. Read my tweets; they are not that negative since I do bring up Coop. QUOTE (2005thxfrthmmrs @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 04:31 PM) So what you're saying is Greg is trashing Soria for having a really bad 2 weeks. This goes both ways. Some of our players get trashed on here. Like take away two weeks of a hitter's 0 for 30 and the hitter is different. Look, I get it. Sox fans are excited cause he's new, the unknown. I'd love if Soria does what some relievers do and has a good year after a bad one.
  21. QUOTE (ron883 @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 05:29 AM) [politics] whoever edited my post to add that should take a vacation. that's mean.
  22. QUOTE (ChiSox1917 @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 03:12 AM) Soria is not "really bad". He's so bad a city is rejoicing he's gone. I'll stop now but you guys have to calm down about Soria. He's really bad. Ask Caulfield. He has the numbers. If Coop can save him then yes you could 'maybe' flip him. But if Coop can't, I'm surprised you guys who don't seem to want to spend Jerry's money are OK with 9 million going to this guy per season. Here's how bad he is: "Over the last two seasons, Soria had 14 blown saves and a 3.89 ERA. He became a lightning rod for the frustrations of Royals fans, who had become accustomed to unprecedented success from a bullpen combination of Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland."
  23. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 02:22 AM) Can you please elaborate? I have no idea how his stuff was last year, but his K rate was above his career average and his BB rate wasn’t too much worse. The HR rate obviously appears to be an outlier though. Regardless, the stats seem to be pretty good. Did he blow a bunch of saves or something? If that’s the big problem then I’ll happily role the dice on him as our closer in a rebuilding season. Can I defer your questions to Caulfield? He can explain. He was probably the most despised Royal in KC of the fans. He was that bad. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 02:35 AM) Greg, Soria had a 2.23 FIP last year and striking out over 10 hitters per 9 innings. He was damn good last year. I defer to Caulfield. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 02:37 AM) Greg demands a better major league roster in 2018. Rick Hahn improves the talent roster for the 2018 roster Greg is furious. Sounds about right. The other guy we got sounds fine. QUOTE (CWSpalehoseCWS @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 02:39 AM) Soria comes across as one of those "deceptively good" stats guys. He struggled last year with RISP and high leverage situations. Check out his Fangraph splits, small sample size, but not good by any means. Even so, I don't think there's any reason to freak out over him being on the team. Sox needed pen arms bad. Not a bad post but he's really bad.
  24. QUOTE (Jake @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 01:09 AM) I don't get the pessimism with Soria. He's had one bad year ever and that year was hardly a total s***show by White Sox standards. We're going to get something much nicer than Jake Peter in return for him at the deadline. The pessimism is well founded. he's that bad. Seriously, he may have made the decision for me to not get mlb.com this year. I'll go crazy watching him pitch. Perfect though, again, for those who want one more tank season. He's perfect cause nobody can accuse the Sox of tanking cause he has a name and makes a good buck. But he will get the tank job done. I'm not lying when I say Royals fans are rejoicing. It's better for them than New Year's Rockin Eve.
  25. I am not blasting the trade as it's not contention time yet, but some Tweets from Royals fans. ... Thank god I no longer have to exchange Ffffff Soria texts with my brother while i watch him piss away the lead! Well we just now sent Soria to the South Side of Chicago!! Rejoice!!! SORIA IS GONE FROM THE ROYALS!!!!!! KC ITS TIME TO THROW A PARADE!!! Soria has a truckload of blown saves the last two years. Shipping him to someone that you play 19 times may be worth a few wins. He’s gone!! No more mad Soria tweets ever again!! Best news in a long time!!! Yes the fans here despise Soria. The only hope is Coop might fix him. Coop is that good. If Coop can't fix him he's perfect for those fans who want to make sure we blow leads we might have late in the game to get a better draft pick.
