OT: Dan Le Batard vs Commish
I had to turn it off. Too confrontational. Interview the guy, don't roll your eyes and yell at the commish and make yourself the story. I know he's mad about south florida but just ask questions and not bark them out.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Dec 18, 2017 -> 04:02 AM) LMAO! Could you be more of a wet blanket on this, this being one of the more exciting times in very recent White Sox memory, with the Sox going this aggressively at acquiring a premium talent like Machado? Chr*st on a cracker, already! Here we have for the first time in a long time - a very long time, mind you! - our BIG MARKET ball club talking like a BIG MARKET ball club about pursuing a premium talent like this, a soon to be available asset on the open market, AND giving fairly strong indications that they as a BIG MARKET club will have the ability to meet the market demands and sign the talent long term. When was the last time a White Sox fan was able to get excited about this kind of free agent prospect signing? Yet here you are reigning down with your typical Debbie Downer, “Why, the Sox could never, ever...do this or...do that...” nonsense. As if it were a fool’s errand to ever believe the team could make such an acquisition like this come true. Why, then, should we believe your line of thinking on the unlikelihood of the Sox acquiring Machado vs. what the GM has recently and refreshingly suggested as a different approach when it comes to competing for talents such as his? Wet blanket? Machado is available one season. You trade 3-4 of the prospects you just got for a guy who will not make a difference on a 65-win ballclub. It's ridiculous to discuss even. Now in a year when he's a free agent, if you want to toss out an offer for him, fine. But trade for him for one year when your team is crap? It makes no sense at all. Get excited in a year if the Sox really are going to try to sign him.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 17, 2017 -> 09:21 PM) Yet you listen to Rush Limbaugh. You guys make me lose faith in message boards. You haven't read my take on Rush? How often I listen? You guys make me sad sometimes.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Dec 18, 2017 -> 01:41 AM) Common response from Orioles fan is that he had a "slow start". Lots of people are ok with it, but this slow start was really about 3 months, or half of the entire season. You have posters trying to DFA Abreu for a similar stint over 3 weeks, so I hope it wouldn't become a chronic issue with Machado if he played here. Great post. Sox fans, like almost all fans of all teams, tend to devalue their own players while overvaluing others. Human nature. The unknown is always better. People follow Abreu every day and see all his warts. Manny, meanwhile, is a concept. A great concept. GO SOX! Win the pennant someday with Avi and Abreu please!

The Sexual Assault problem
QUOTE (Quin @ Dec 17, 2017 -> 10:13 AM) If you had told me to pick one person at MSNBC who would be caught in this, I'd have said Matthews in a heartbeat. This one is barely shocking. I don't like Matthews' style. Very very loud, speaks over people, is rude when they disagree and comes across as screeching voice. If he is guilty of this kinda stuff, fire him now. He's over 70. Retirement time.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 16, 2017 -> 12:35 AM) Here's what I think is happening/is the strategy: Hahn sees Machado available for young pitching. White Sox, having such a deep farm now, almost certainly have some prospects/players that THEY think are overrated by consensus. He puts together a package of guys the Sox maybe have soured on but the rest of the industry won't catch onto for another half season or so, figuring that if he moves these guys for Machado, he can re-flip Machado for a different set of prospects at the deadline. Even if the "total value" of the return is similar or even a bit less than he paid, it could be a boon if he can get guys he likes better than those he gave up. That sounds like a "calculated risk" to me. And then, if he can extend him in-season instead, that's a bonus. But I can't believe they think an extension is anything more than a hail mary. Man, this strategy assumes the league is full of dumb GMs. So we are going to send them some name prospects who we have already deduced will not make it. Then we flip him and try again for different prospects. I would think Jerry and the owners would rather save their $$$ and not give Machado any dough prior to being flipped considering we're penciling in the sox for about 64 wins this year. If you are going to be that bad (bullpen, defense) why the hell would you not just hoard some more money rather than give it to Manny in some weird flip scheme.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (SonofaRoache @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 09:01 PM) It's not a slam dunk at all. What is close to a slam dunk is if he does like it here and we pay up, he will more than like re-sign. Whereas if he isn't here, and he's deciding simply on money and perception, we'd probably not even get a seriously look. When you're battling against teams like the Yanks and BoSox for elite talent and money is similar, you are in trouble. Any advantage you can get, take it. I just think this is a misguided point with all due respect. This isn't how free agency works. I'm sure he would like Chicago. Most players do unless they pull a Sale. Ozzie would probably kill (figure of speech) to return to this great city and have it in the palm of his hand. But this is so wrong. Machado is gonna follow the $$$. We are not going to be in the running. It makes zero sense that during a 64-win season we acquire him only to lose 4 prospects. At the end of the season we gave up 4 prospects for nothing really. Bizarre that this is even being discussed in the media. The idea of flipping him at the break also disgusts me. So we flip him to replace the 4 prospects we give up for him. Will these new 4 prospects in the flip be better than the four we give up for him now? Bizarre talk.

Is Contention Upon the White Sox earlier than expected?
QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 05:38 AM) In answer to your question, Greg, likely not, but if it were, even you would have to rate the rebuild well at that point. I'm just saying if the baseball world is saying we've arrived, why don't we arrive? Let's win, baby.
-
Is Contention Upon the White Sox earlier than expected?
I shouldn't start a new thread, because people get upset when I do that, but I couldn't resist. The thread on our rotation looking strong makes me want to share what the talk shows were saying tonight as they discussed the Duffy trade rumors. KC Royals are probably going to start rebuilding and shopping Duffy in the words of the host, "because teams like the White Sox and Twins have passed them and will dominate the division the next five years." Hmmm ... the KC announcers think the Sox already are contenders whereas our fans think there's two additional seasons of tanking left in us. Just thought I'd pass on that in KC, perhaps cause of the head to head meetings in which the Sox looked good last year vs. KC, the people are thinking the Sox rebuild is over and the time to win is starting. That's food for thought for those who are looking forward to two more seasons of tank. Has the team arrived or not? KC people say the Sox have arrived no matter how badly many fans want more top five draft picks.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 11:00 PM) I will say for a fact that Machado will not get $500 million over 10 years...that is totally absurd. Right now the highest paid player in the mlb is Clayton Kershaw @ $33 million per year. Right now Harper/Machado are expected to land contracts in the $350-400 million range. To be fair I said between 300 and 500 million. Certainly the Yanks, Dodgers, Red Sox, Angels, Cubs will be willing to outbid each other and give him a huge deal. We're not going to outbid the big boys.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 09:55 PM) Cardinals and Red Sox If you are a contender, sure you could do that. Mortgaging the future for a one-year wonder who could lead you to the promised land. The Cubs actually should do what it takes to get him. Gut the remaining portion of the farm for Machado. He'd probably be what they need to win another WS.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 09:46 PM) Why? It makes perfect sense. He will be in his prime when the white sox have their window to compete. As long as thy are convinced they can sign him to a long term deal, it's perfect. they will have a very low payroll with the young players for the next 5 years. Why? Because you are getting a guy for one year and we are not contending this year. Cmon. He's not going to sign with the White Sox. Of that I am 100 percent sure. To give up 4-5 young alleged can't miss studs we acquired through deals for one year of Manny makes no sense at all. This is like keeping Sale or Q when we were gutting the team. That also would have made no sense. If you are gutting the team you don't add a one-year wonder. It's ridiculous. Folks ... Machado will not be signing with the White Sox. He will be a free agent who will receive an epic contract. He's not going to sign now just because he's afraid he's going to suddenly suck during his season afore free agency. Makes zero sense for a rebuilding team. Now next offseason, sure try to sign him, make your offer, but folks I don't believe in Santa or the Tooth Fairy. In modern day baseball, Jerry and the partners do not sign Manny Machado 10 years 300 to 500 million.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 02:04 AM) Getting Machado for just this year is about the most pointless thing they could do It makes zero sense. He is not signing long term with the White Sox. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 02:05 AM) Why would ANY TEAM, much less your KC Royals, trade 3 TOP prospects for a two month rental like Johnny Cueto, when there was no chance he would resign with them? Well the Royals were trying to win it all that year. The Sox signing Machado makes no sense for 1 year. I hate the idea of "flipping" him at the deadline. That is just stupid as well. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 02:25 AM) What's the point in adding him for one year when you aren't trying to compete? Exactly. There's no way he's signing long term with Chicago. If the Sox could, as the one story suggested, have the trade contingent on Manny signing an extension within 72 hours or the deal is off, that is the only possibillity that makes any sense at all. I don't buy that he would EVER sign with us. Sox just aren't going to give him 10 years 300 million. The Cubs might, not the Sox. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 02:25 AM) Unless the plan is to then flip Machado at the deadline to a team in contention this would be the dumbest move we could possibly make right now. God I hate the flip idea here. So Sox deal 4-5 prospects they've acquired to gamble they can sign Manny to an extension, then realize they obviously can't and flip him for 4 different prospects. Weird. QUOTE (TheTruth05 @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 03:18 AM) F*** I hate this but I love it so much more. Getting Machado a year early would definitely help negotiations, especially if the kids develop and they have a a good development year. Also WSD is a legit source as they come,he's proven plenty he is legit. Cmon. It won't help negotiations. If Sox don't have the money to compete to sign him they don't have the money. Period.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
I have a serious question nobody has addressed. Why would ANY TEAM, much less our White Sox, trade 3-4 TOP prospects for a one-year rental? There's no chance in hell Machado will sign prior to free agency. Why would he? So rather than flame greg, please answer my question. Nobody has addressed this except me. What player the caliber of Machado has EVER agreed to a long extension with one season to go before free agency. s***, even Cain, Hosmer and Moustakas, who are average to above average players, did not do that and they like Kansas city, a nice, quaint town.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 06:17 PM) This has been discussed ad nauseum, but there are many things people didn't think Reinsdorf and the board would approve, but they did anyways. Again, if the White Sox are not willing to spend a significant amount of money in free agency next year, this rebuild will have slowed down monumentally. I don't know why I'm discussing this or anybody is because you simply do not trade four top prospects (even though I hate prospects) for Manny when he's a free agent in a year. It makes absolutely no sense as he's not going to sign with anybody before becoming a free agent and getting paid the maximum amount. The Sox can't win the pennant this season with Machado so it would be absurd to deal 4 propsects for a one-year player. That's why I say it's not worth discussing. If you must play fantasy baseball dream of next offseason and let the Sox try to get in the bidding war for Manny. Discussing things like this seem counterproductive. Sorry I elected to take part, but I won't post any more about Manny. It ain't happening just like Otani wasn't going to consider Chicago cause Chciago had no money to dangle to him.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 05:22 PM) I still think it’s a year too early to cash in on our prospects though unless a deal is simply too good to pass up. It seems ridiculous to change course midstream and trade 4 top prospects for Machado especially when there's no way in hell the Sox will be the team to give him his 10 year 350 million dollar deal in free agency. I can understand trade talk but this is dumb to even talk about. Some things you know the Sox are not going to do under Jerry and one of them is sign Machado. I can sort of see why you'd want to trade 4-5 guys out of the guys acquired to sign Machado, but to do it for one year is silly to even discuss. Again, he's not choosing Chicago Sox in free agency. You can dream all you want but that is not happening.

2017 Offseason White Sox News, Notes, and Tweets thread
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 03:35 PM) https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newLDR_81.htm I do not see "destroying company property" mentioned anywhere. These are sports athletes. Where's the part of that article talking about the higher ups in the company refusing to listen to the concerns of one of its most important employees? It goes both ways. Sale started out by merely voicing his concerns about the uniforms. The team could have used them on a day he wasn't scheduled to pitch and solved the conflict. Sure he committed a no-no in destroying the uniforms. The team had a right to have him arrested I guess, but again, this is Sale we're talking here. If a company's top employee doesn't want to do something it might be wise to listen to said employee especially in sports.

2017 Offseason White Sox News, Notes, and Tweets thread
QUOTE (Sockin @ Dec 12, 2017 -> 10:32 PM) Not really news or anything but Austin Jackson is doing an AMA on r/baseball and had this to say about his time with the 2016 Sox. Someone asked him about the clubhouse's reaction to the Sale jersey cutting. "I absolutely loved my time in Chicago. One of the best organizations I've played with. Enjoyed the clubhouse, the team was a really close-knit team. As far as the Sale incident - I actually wasn't there for that, I had surgery for a torn MCL. But when I went back, everybody seemed to be laughing about it. I don't think anybody took it to heart." https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/...winter/dr5iizy/ I still can't believe fans got worked up about that. Sale was hated by many on here for some reason. I applaud him. He told the front office he wouldn't pitch in those horrifically uncomfortable uniforms. Rather than risk blowing out his arm while pitching in jerseys that he hated and put him in a rotten mood much less uncomfortable mood, he took the scissors to them. Big deal. He had to pay for them and got fined and he prevented his teammates from wearing those monstrocities. Why wouldn't the team laugh about it? Why would anybody take the front office's position on this? Sale was a star and stars can be moody.

Abreu trade "unlikely"
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 01:04 AM) This is exactly what I said when I was mentioning the Hahn meeting I was at. Same with Avi . Dick Allen, predict whether they'll be traded or not. You saw Hahn when he said it. Wouldn't you say 90 percent yes they'll be traded? 10 percent no, until the trade deadline?

The Avi Thread
QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 01:30 AM) Market for #WhiteSox's Avisail Garcia is heating up, and Leury Garcia is appealing to some teams as well https://twitter.com/670TheScore/status/940755173131079680 Hahn is licking his chops to trade Avi and Abreu and complete the tearing down. Then the heat's on him to get those younguns to the majors and start winning. Oh wait, the heat's not on GMs who rebuild. Fans love the unknown and the window of patience will be at least five more years with Sox fans who like all fans love the rebuild.

Abreu trade "unlikely"
QUOTE (hi8is @ Dec 10, 2017 -> 05:57 AM) I love that you never use facts to support your "logic" - it's such an endearing handsome quality, big boy Dick Allen of our board here convinced me Hahn was determined to ship Abreu and Avi. After being convinced of it, it's easy to see why. Like I said it completes the gutting of the roster and the full rebuild is assured.
-
Abreu trade "unlikely"
QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Dec 8, 2017 -> 08:39 PM) So basically just "Rrrrargh, I hate the rebuild" is what led you to that conclusion? That's what I get from this post. Just give me credit for saying the trade 100 percent would happen after it's completed. Sox are determined to completely gut the roster before finishing the rebuild.

The Sexual Assault problem
QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Dec 8, 2017 -> 04:01 AM) Not saying this applies to anything going on, but as a young man I "played the field" and wouldn't commit to a woman because I just wanted to experience what was out there. This led to a lot of bitter young women who made up plenty of false claims to slander me. I think their motives were often "well this will get his attention and scare off other women at the same time". A scorned woman is a powerful weapon and I was smeared like crazy for loving and not committing. Not proud of my actions looking back but I had plenty of false info spread about me that I had to unfairly answer for. I'm sure many of you experienced the same thing. Not saying this applies to any of these famous cases, but that level of scorned & crazy is certainly out there in droves, men and women. Can't help but wonder. I'm proud of the women who were assaulted coming forward and i'm sorry for the men who are innocent. And we'll never know who is who since they are all guilty first. Human beings. I hope the "false info" didn't involve the women going to the police with false allegations. Scorned and crazy is one thing, but if the women are falsely accusing men of crimes, they deserve to be prosecuted themselves and thrown in jail. You can ruin lives very quickly through false allegations. What did these women specifically do to you?

Giancarlo Stanton traded to Yankees
QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Dec 9, 2017 -> 09:11 PM) MLB is soon going to have the same issue that the NBA is now having. Three or four "super" teams...Dodgers, Yankees, Indians, Astros. A small number of very good teams...Red Sox, Cubs, Nats and all the rest mediocre at best or tanking / rebuilding with ZERO CHANCE to win anything. Not good for the fans and not good from a business standpoint when fans stop watching or going to games because there isn't any point. I agree. Baseball is doomed. Millenials don't get baseball and actually despise it. It's way too boring and slow paced because of the umpires' refusal to care about the game and obey the rules and speed up the game. Those playoff games took forever and people just don't want 4-hour baseball games. Pretty much you can bank on the first three innings taking an hour. The next three taking an hour and the final three taking about 2 hours. Or at least 90 minutes for a 3.5 hour game, sometimes 4 hours. Ridiculous. You make a great comparison with the NBA. Only thing that can save baseball is the "tank" factor, though. Now, teams' fans can embrace 4-6 year rebuilds and feel they truly have a shot. They can laugh at those who laugh at their record and point to the rebuild. "Wait til next year" is a very valuable tool in marketing of fans. Always has been. And now with all the tank jobs, wait til next year is huge. At least there's a "reason" for teams sucking and fans love sucking if it's part of a rebuild. Very astute of front offices to embrace the build if they don't have the $$ to compete. Meanwhile, the rich will truly dominate like you said.
-
Abreu trade "unlikely"
QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Dec 8, 2017 -> 06:31 AM) It seems obvious to you that they're going to trade Abreu based on Hahn saying they're not going to trade him unless they get the right offer and others saying the asking price is far too high. How did you come to that conclusion given that information? Dick Allen heard it from the horse's mouth. Plus I feel it's a clean sweep. He gets rid of the final two White Sox players who are worth a s*** and in return the rebuild is complete. He'll add 3 more top five draft picks as well. Unfortunately we're still going to need some veterans from other teams when it's time to win it all. I doubt all the players he acquired will be good enough to get it done, but maybe they will. There's no reason to keep Abreu and Avi in this current climate. Although the Twins and Tigers are very weak and it's like we're conceding the division to the Indians and Twins as the rebuild takes hold. Losing Abreu and Avi should guarantee last for 2 more seasons and that means coveted top five draft picks for Hahn and the rebuild.
