  1. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 13, 2017 -> 09:54 PM) You forgot to add a random question to the board about Chelsea Clinton and also remind everyone that you didn't vote for either of the 2 major candidates. I feel I have to remind people because I get lumped in with Trump lovers. I'm just giving him a chance unlike many on the board. We couldn't even have a nice thread wishing him the best after the election. There's no reason for me to want Trump to fail.
  2. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Feb 13, 2017 -> 09:44 PM) There is actually no way for history to prove you right that Hillary Clinton would have been a poor President because, well, she's not the President. If Donald Trump is a disaster for his entire term, there will be no evidence as to whether a Clinton presidency would have been better or worse because she is not the President. As an aside, Greg, I think we all need to have a discussion about the difference between "editorials," and reporting based on facts. Like, that Yahoo article is an editorial - meaning that it's just one man's opinion. Most of the reporting on the Trump administration thus far that has people worried is based on fact (his lies about voter fraud and the murder rate, using the Presidency to urge people to buy his daughter's products, doubling the fee to join Mar-a-Lago, conducting a foreign policy strategy session in the middle of a restaurant for anybody to see, etc.). Finally, why do you think Jesse Ventura would be a good President? I have literally no idea why an XFL documentary would make you want a Ventura presidency... You said: There is actually no way for history to prove you right that Hillary Clinton would have been a poor President because, well, she's not the President. If Donald Trump is a disaster for his entire term, there will be no evidence as to whether a Clinton presidency would have been better or worse because she is not the President. I say: I guess you are right that there is no absolute proof. You said: As an aside, Greg, I think we all need to have a discussion about the difference between "editorials," and reporting based on facts. I said: Yes that was an opinion piece. But remember there's no reason to bring Trump into any discussions with me. I'm not a fan and I didn't vote for him either. I think he's too much a 1 percenter to care about me or the middle class much. You said: Finally, why do you think Jesse Ventura would be a good President? I have literally no idea why an XFL documentary would make you want a Ventura presidency... I said: Well, he was loved in Minnesota and I've watched long interviews with him and I like his style. I guess some of his positions are very radical but I feel like he genuinely cares about people. I could be wrong but this is a world of style over substance and I like his style. He's convinced me he's good, not evil. Maybe it's too strong to say Trump and Hillary are evil, but I feel like they are not good for the average American.
  3. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 13, 2017 -> 08:26 PM) Do you have a link? I just searched yahoo and couldn't find it It was on yahoo but I guess FOX News wrote it http://nation.foxnews.com/2017/02/13/goodw...e-lost-election
  4. QUOTE (Tony @ Feb 13, 2017 -> 09:11 PM) You're right, the "uniformed, head in the sand" role was left vacant for a while, but Brett has some mighty big shoes to fill. Did u read that story on yahoo front page reminding us why it's good Hillary isn't president? My head may be in the sand, but ultimately I think history will prove I was right about voting for neither. After watching XFL 30 on 30 ESPN last night I still love Jesse Ventura.
  5. This guy would be an amazing signing. Why don't the Sox do it and finally get a catcher.
  6. Nice to see someone besides greg take the heat on here. Brett has emerged.
  7. are we trying to compete? This guy would make us good at catcher. We're already good at 3B, SS, 2B (if Moncada gets early call) and 1B. We're OK in LF, OK in RF, horrible in CF, horrible at DH. Good at pitching overall. Hmmmm.
  8. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Feb 9, 2017 -> 09:30 PM) I want to see balls and strikes determined by a computers and cameras too. Take moody umps out of the equation. I still say there's an umpire conspiracy. They refuse to call the strike zone and they have out of protest the past many years. They won't call any pitch above the belt a strike. It's amazing how the players and owners have had harmony the last many years. The umpires however strike me as whiny workers who do not care about baseball at all. Maybe if the TV announcers could interview umpires like the old days, put 'em on TV, they'd get famous, feel important and call the fricking strike zone.
  9. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 9, 2017 -> 06:30 PM) Greg has been strangely quiet considering Chelsea's recent string of Twitter activity. I was thinking today you guys may not have to worry about my supposed "trolling" any more. I'm not really into politics like many of you. I had strong feelings before the election of course, but I'm not really worked up enough to post anything much post election. I'm still in the "hope for the best" mode and I don't really care about all the stuff Trump's been doing and I am not inclined to defend the attacks on him, cause I really don't like him personally. I feel like he's a 1-percent rich guy who doesn't care about me. However, I'm like I said, hoping for the best. No reason to post anything, however. As far as the Sox, I'm not into the rebuild cause I don't really care to follow prospects in the minors. I feel like if our team blows as badly as people say it will, I'm just going to assume we're not going to contend and (at this time) can't see myself getting worked up about the team as we lose game after game. I'm hoping I get excited about the season, but really I'm thinking I should probably call MLB.com and get my membership canceled before the automatic payment thing clicks in. I guess if we keep the veterans we do have and Moncada starts the season in the bigs, I could get excited if somehow we try to contend. I hope I don't turn into a guy who doesn't follow baseball. I used to know my hockey, but years in Kansas, with no team has turned me into a playoff only Blackhawks fan. In summation, you may not see much of me on here anymore. p.s. Specifically regarding Chelsea ... I guess she could still be the first female president, but I would think she'd have to run for some kind of office first and win. Then again ... Donnie Trump won and he's no politician. I wonder if Mrs. Obama has any interest. I think most people would vote for her.
  10. Interesting. I think the rule should be, "any game that exceeds four hours you put the runner on second base in each extra inning." There is no reason in the world games should take longer than 4 fricking hours. I wouldn't even balk at 3 1/2 hours, but my rule would be regular rules until we exceed four hours. Then the runner goes to second base to start the inning. It would be interesting to see how many managers simply bunt the runner to third, then get a sac fly. That wouldn't accomplish much I guess.
  11. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Feb 8, 2017 -> 02:39 AM) I think the Sox will be a lot better than many of you think. While I don't think they'll sniff the playoffs, I think they'll be in the middle of the pack. I think we're underestimating the difference Renteria will make. He'll be a big improvement over Robin Ventura. Yes but Hahn may make some more trades in the next week or so. I wonder why he couldn't move Q, Robertson, Frazier, Lawrie, Melky, Nate Jones yet??
  12. I wonder what the worst record in franchise history is. I think we'll be right around the worst team in Sox history this year and next. Next year will probably be the low water mark of the rebuild. I'd say 59 wins? Then maybe 57 the following year?
  13. QUOTE (hi8is @ Feb 3, 2017 -> 07:04 PM) I really hope the Sox are historically bad - really want that first pick. Why would Renteria take the Sox job when everybody wants to lose (except me and a couple other posters)? Why would you want to manage a team that will blow chunks? Can't be much fun fielding a 55 win team.
  14. Is our projected outfield the worst in Sox history? Serious ? Not trying to overstate.
  15. Not taking sides but didn't Trump run on these issues? Why is everybody so surprised there's a wall coming and a ban on immigrants? I thought he ran on these issues. And he won the election. So why the outrage now? America elected the guy on these issues.
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 22, 2017 -> 10:32 PM) https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix...m=.e1b88b944259 When lies become "fake news" and now we get Conway's "alternate facts" and unfortunately 1/4th or 1/3rd of the country is willing to believe them or look the other way. https://mobile.twitter.com/rascouet?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw And of course the Twitter source for that insightful Trump media strategy outline is getting battered by right wing social media for not oublicly identifying the source or simply making things up to fit a narrative. Trump is a thin-skinned egomaniac, no doubt about that. For many decades now, he's never faced any opposition in the business world from anybody. Everybody's kissed his butt, so to speak for decades. America knew this and still elected him president. So big deal. If he can do the job, great. If he can't, well, the next election cycle will probably begin in 2.5 years. It will go by fast. So we shall see. But nobody should be surprised by his ego surfacing again and again. I just want results. Improve the economy, baby. Build up the military. improve health care.
  17. I would think this is being addressed by more than the Cardinals. Terrible tragedy. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/110287978/ca...ng-and-driving/
  18. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 22, 2017 -> 06:29 PM) Other than your gut feel, what measurable things do you attribute to a good presidency? The economy. Leadership ability. Being more than a figurehead. The economy. I am not criticizing Obama the person. He is the definition of class.
  19. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 20, 2017 -> 09:42 PM) No, the answer is "great President". He's in the second tier of presidents that follow the first tier of Washington, Lincoln and FDR. How can anybody call Obama's eight years "great?" As far as Democrats, I think Carter and Clinton were WAY better. On the Republican side, Reagan was a great president IMO. Barack's reign was classy but he was ineffective.
  20. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jan 22, 2017 -> 04:48 PM) Oh, here's a hint for you..."rebuilds" usually DO take years. Better get used to it. Mark This is going to be a strange rebuild. I know this board has people who love prospects and the process of rebuilding, but the reality is that very few people care about stuff like that until the team actually starts winning. At major league prices I would imagine attendance will be at an all time low the next few seasons.
  21. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 22, 2017 -> 04:44 AM) Wait. I thought it was Obama who was giving all of us free stuff! greg I'm confused. I sit here, cross-legged and starry-eyed, awaiting your tutelage. I mean he'll improve the economy enough I hope that I can make more money working and save money on price of things, etc. He's supposed to help business owners make more loot and maybe they'll pass it on to me. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Jan 22, 2017 -> 04:58 AM) We need to be civil to each other. I liked your entire post, but especially that line. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 22, 2017 -> 05:56 AM) What policies has he proposed that will bring prosperity to the typical family of four earning $30-60,000 per year in Lawrence, KS? He's supposed to work his ass off to turn the economy around with Laffer's policies.
  22. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 22, 2017 -> 12:46 AM) You mention Hillary and your hate of her basically in every post. You expect a much more vile human to get rah-rahs? I told you I'm a Republican yet I voted for Obama last time. I did not vote for Trump or Hillary this time. I also told you I didn't vote for Romney as I didn't like him. I despise Hillary, of course I do. But if she had won I wouldn't have continued the rant until the next presidential race was underway. I am an American. I don't understand those who actively root against the President. If he does well it helps you and me! I would show Obama respect despite the fact I thought he was a lousy President. I thought I was gracious in my initial post on this thread. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 22, 2017 -> 12:48 AM) 1) absolutely no one believes your claim that you wouldn't be whining about Clinton constantly. 2) I want America and Americans to do well. To me, that means trump failing at basically every single part of his stated agenda. If he wins, we lose. He has done nothing to deserve a "clean slate" and everything to demonstrate how unqualified and undeserving he is off the office, and he's already continued to do that today. one.) That's sad. I am an American first and foremost. Yes I'd complain incessantly about her in 3 years during the next campaign if she had been lousy. two. He may not deserve a clean slate, but our President deserves a clean slate. Don't you want prosperity?? I do. I want some money. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 22, 2017 -> 01:51 AM) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jobs_create...sidential_terms Greg, do you not see how many more jobs were created during the Obama and Clinton terms than the Bush (either one) years? https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-l...m=.4499e387e234 Reagan did pretty well, but FDR and Clinton will go down as the most successful with Obama not far behind. Do you really believe tariffs and isolationism will grow the economy and bring back jobs? Not to mention that trickle down economics (lowering taxes on rich and corporations) has never been proven to be beneficial to anyone but the elites you're always complaining about, as well as multinationals that don't even pay a fair share of taxes in the US to begin with because of offshore tax loopholes written by mostly Republican lobbyists. Do really think Goldman Sachs about anyone in Kansas, other than the Koch Brothers in Wichita? I dunno. I like Bill Clinton. I love Jimmy Carter. I didn't like Obama. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 22, 2017 -> 02:03 AM) Greg, since you always get bent out of shape when veterans are disrespected. Here's a whopper. That was one of the more disconcerting speeches I’ve seen,” said a senior U.S. intelligence official who was not present for the Trump speech but watched it by video. “He could have kept it very simple and said, ‘I’m here to build some bridges.’ But he spent 10 seconds on that and the rest was on the crowd size,” the official said, referring to Trump’s repeated complaints that the media had undercounted the turnout for his inauguration. Referring to Trump’s use of the CIA memorial wall as a backdrop, the official said, “People are going to think that was offensive." https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/tru...m=.807c1bd1f506 I think I told you before, the military LOVES Trump. I know that for a fact. I can't believe we Americans can't get along.
  23. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 21, 2017 -> 06:36 AM) I couldn't keep reading after this. Why? I thought it was a nice point to make. Cooper obviously did not want Trump yet was thoroughly professional in covering the 3 inauguration balls and commentary, etc. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 21, 2017 -> 08:53 PM) Did you honestly ask that same question in January of 2009 when Limbaugh and others were convincing conservatives to say the same about Obama? I always wish well for my country. I'm glad I am not full of bitterness. I despise Hillary but I can assure you if she won I wouldn't have ripped her every move. Now in 3.5 years when the next election season came around? If she stunk as Pres of course I'd have renewed venom toward her. Trump is president. Just as I wished Obama well I wish Trump well. I want my country to get powerful again. I want the economy to grow. He's in charge now. I think everybody should give a clean slate to Trump, but I realize that's impossible. Even a nice thread like this didn't last but 1-2 posts before turning to Trump disgust. Whatever. Peace to you all.
  24. Folks, it is inauguration day. Right now I'm watching the inauguration balls. Anderson Cooper is being VERY professional. What I'm asking is as Americans ... on the first day of the Trump presidency, here is your chance to express your best wishes to our new president and best wishes to our country. We can look back on this thread in four years; eight years. It is your chance to show some class and be a true American. Let me go first ... Congratuations Mr. Trump. I wish you the best as President of the United States. May you do your best to uphold the constitution, grant peace and prosperity to all Americans and be a great leader here and around the world. GOD BLESS AMERICA!! And also ... Congratuatlions Mr. Obama. I have no doubt you did your absolute best and I thank you for your hard work and representing the USA in a very classy, professional manner. God bless you and may you attend a lotta White Sox games in the future as you rest and relax!
  25. Thanks for the excellent responses. I wonder why that woman told my friend she couldn't afford the property taxes. Thanks again. The one pot shot about Kansas. I'm not acting like Kansas is any good. I was just wondering if my favorite city of Chicago was in deep trouble or not. Could somebody estimate for me the taxes you'd pay with a modest house on 103rd and Trumbull? Mt. Greenwood? What would the house be worth and what would a working stiff have to pay in taxes to live there?? Thank you very much.
