  1. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 20, 2017 -> 09:42 PM) No, the answer is "great President". He's in the second tier of presidents that follow the first tier of Washington, Lincoln and FDR. How can anybody call Obama's eight years "great?" As far as Democrats, I think Carter and Clinton were WAY better. On the Republican side, Reagan was a great president IMO. Barack's reign was classy but he was ineffective.
  2. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jan 22, 2017 -> 04:48 PM) Oh, here's a hint for you..."rebuilds" usually DO take years. Better get used to it. Mark This is going to be a strange rebuild. I know this board has people who love prospects and the process of rebuilding, but the reality is that very few people care about stuff like that until the team actually starts winning. At major league prices I would imagine attendance will be at an all time low the next few seasons.
  3. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 22, 2017 -> 04:44 AM) Wait. I thought it was Obama who was giving all of us free stuff! greg I'm confused. I sit here, cross-legged and starry-eyed, awaiting your tutelage. I mean he'll improve the economy enough I hope that I can make more money working and save money on price of things, etc. He's supposed to help business owners make more loot and maybe they'll pass it on to me. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Jan 22, 2017 -> 04:58 AM) We need to be civil to each other. I liked your entire post, but especially that line. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 22, 2017 -> 05:56 AM) What policies has he proposed that will bring prosperity to the typical family of four earning $30-60,000 per year in Lawrence, KS? He's supposed to work his ass off to turn the economy around with Laffer's policies.
  4. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 22, 2017 -> 12:46 AM) You mention Hillary and your hate of her basically in every post. You expect a much more vile human to get rah-rahs? I told you I'm a Republican yet I voted for Obama last time. I did not vote for Trump or Hillary this time. I also told you I didn't vote for Romney as I didn't like him. I despise Hillary, of course I do. But if she had won I wouldn't have continued the rant until the next presidential race was underway. I am an American. I don't understand those who actively root against the President. If he does well it helps you and me! I would show Obama respect despite the fact I thought he was a lousy President. I thought I was gracious in my initial post on this thread. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 22, 2017 -> 12:48 AM) 1) absolutely no one believes your claim that you wouldn't be whining about Clinton constantly. 2) I want America and Americans to do well. To me, that means trump failing at basically every single part of his stated agenda. If he wins, we lose. He has done nothing to deserve a "clean slate" and everything to demonstrate how unqualified and undeserving he is off the office, and he's already continued to do that today. one.) That's sad. I am an American first and foremost. Yes I'd complain incessantly about her in 3 years during the next campaign if she had been lousy. two. He may not deserve a clean slate, but our President deserves a clean slate. Don't you want prosperity?? I do. I want some money. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 22, 2017 -> 01:51 AM) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jobs_create...sidential_terms Greg, do you not see how many more jobs were created during the Obama and Clinton terms than the Bush (either one) years? https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-l...m=.4499e387e234 Reagan did pretty well, but FDR and Clinton will go down as the most successful with Obama not far behind. Do you really believe tariffs and isolationism will grow the economy and bring back jobs? Not to mention that trickle down economics (lowering taxes on rich and corporations) has never been proven to be beneficial to anyone but the elites you're always complaining about, as well as multinationals that don't even pay a fair share of taxes in the US to begin with because of offshore tax loopholes written by mostly Republican lobbyists. Do really think Goldman Sachs about anyone in Kansas, other than the Koch Brothers in Wichita? I dunno. I like Bill Clinton. I love Jimmy Carter. I didn't like Obama. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 22, 2017 -> 02:03 AM) Greg, since you always get bent out of shape when veterans are disrespected. Here's a whopper. That was one of the more disconcerting speeches I’ve seen,” said a senior U.S. intelligence official who was not present for the Trump speech but watched it by video. “He could have kept it very simple and said, ‘I’m here to build some bridges.’ But he spent 10 seconds on that and the rest was on the crowd size,” the official said, referring to Trump’s repeated complaints that the media had undercounted the turnout for his inauguration. Referring to Trump’s use of the CIA memorial wall as a backdrop, the official said, “People are going to think that was offensive." https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/tru...m=.807c1bd1f506 I think I told you before, the military LOVES Trump. I know that for a fact. I can't believe we Americans can't get along.
  5. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 21, 2017 -> 06:36 AM) I couldn't keep reading after this. Why? I thought it was a nice point to make. Cooper obviously did not want Trump yet was thoroughly professional in covering the 3 inauguration balls and commentary, etc. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 21, 2017 -> 08:53 PM) Did you honestly ask that same question in January of 2009 when Limbaugh and others were convincing conservatives to say the same about Obama? I always wish well for my country. I'm glad I am not full of bitterness. I despise Hillary but I can assure you if she won I wouldn't have ripped her every move. Now in 3.5 years when the next election season came around? If she stunk as Pres of course I'd have renewed venom toward her. Trump is president. Just as I wished Obama well I wish Trump well. I want my country to get powerful again. I want the economy to grow. He's in charge now. I think everybody should give a clean slate to Trump, but I realize that's impossible. Even a nice thread like this didn't last but 1-2 posts before turning to Trump disgust. Whatever. Peace to you all.
  6. Folks, it is inauguration day. Right now I'm watching the inauguration balls. Anderson Cooper is being VERY professional. What I'm asking is as Americans ... on the first day of the Trump presidency, here is your chance to express your best wishes to our new president and best wishes to our country. We can look back on this thread in four years; eight years. It is your chance to show some class and be a true American. Let me go first ... Congratuations Mr. Trump. I wish you the best as President of the United States. May you do your best to uphold the constitution, grant peace and prosperity to all Americans and be a great leader here and around the world. GOD BLESS AMERICA!! And also ... Congratuatlions Mr. Obama. I have no doubt you did your absolute best and I thank you for your hard work and representing the USA in a very classy, professional manner. God bless you and may you attend a lotta White Sox games in the future as you rest and relax!
  7. Thanks for the excellent responses. I wonder why that woman told my friend she couldn't afford the property taxes. Thanks again. The one pot shot about Kansas. I'm not acting like Kansas is any good. I was just wondering if my favorite city of Chicago was in deep trouble or not. Could somebody estimate for me the taxes you'd pay with a modest house on 103rd and Trumbull? Mt. Greenwood? What would the house be worth and what would a working stiff have to pay in taxes to live there?? Thank you very much.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 19, 2017 -> 11:50 PM) As with you, the Republicans in Congress only care about corruption when they can throw that allegation at Hillary Clinton. The moment he puts his hand on the Bible and it bursts into flame, he will be in violation of the constitution by profiting from his office. If he's in violation of the constitution then impeach him. I am not beholden to Trump. I just can't believe you guys won't take responsibility for choosing a candidate that can't even beat Donald Trump. Many on this site blast Trump over and over but act like this is some conspiracy. The Democrats chose a candidate who had no chance of winning cause she is DESPISED nationally even more than Trump.
  9. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 19, 2017 -> 03:29 PM) He has already committed several. Refusal to divest from his companies as a start. If that's true, then impeach him. I'm all for getting rid of him if he has committed impeachable offenses. Otherwise, I can hope for an improved economy. I don't want to die homeless someday. I need $$ like we all do.
  10. I hate Hall of Fame arguments. To fans, it seems like nobody is ever good enough. Paulie won't get in, but he was good enough IMO. It's hard to get in the Hall.
  11. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 19, 2017 -> 05:49 AM) Agreed. They should all show up and scream "You lie!" when Trump takes the podium. If our country is going to go downhill forevermore, I just wish it'd speed up and Armageddon would be tomorrow. Nobody can hope for the best. Nobody can get behind Trump, whom MILLIONS of AMERICANS voted for. We all despise him. Basically we despise everybody who doesn't agree with us, choose OUR candidate. I don't understand why people don't actually hope for the best at this point. Like I said a lot of successful people, reasonable people think Trump can turn the economy around and maybe the little guy can make as much money as his/her parents made. Right now, that's a dream that never will be a reality. Just think, your kids will never do as well financially as you are doing. GET BEHIND TRUMP until he commits an impeachable offense folks. Let's all prosper! We are Americans!
  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 19, 2017 -> 05:14 AM) 60 members of the House of Representatives sitting out the inauguration Friday. What a f-ed up country. People only care about their own party in politics. Nobody cares about the country. Very sad. Here's the reality of the situation: Some people actually think Trump will work hard and try to help the country. Just because you have a D by your name doesn't mean you can't get behind Trump. What's the alternative? We all die? If Trump sucks and commits an impeachable offense, by all means let's get rid of him. Until then, s***, maybe things will get better. The people whining should be incensed at their own party for nominating a person WHO COULD NOT BEAT TRUMP. As for now, why not work with him and hope the economy improves and the little guy and gal start making some fricking money.
  13. This makes sense. The way the team is a month before spring training we have TOO many veterans to be in a rebuild. Our infield is amazing. Our outfield is pathetic. Our catching is pathetic. Our DH is pathetic. Our pitching however is good.
  14. I had a friend of mine call me tonight and tell me one of his coworkers is going to move out of the city because of incredible property tax hikes. She is going to move to one of the cities where there are no state taxes. Is this a true concern in the great city of Chicago? Is our city doomed or not? Let's say you lived on 103rd and Trumbull. What would your taxes cost you as a working stiff for a full year in one of those modest homes. Any figures for me? What are your thoughts about Chicago going broke? Is the city in deep financial trouble in terms of turning into a wasteland in the city itself like Detroit or not?
  15. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 19, 2017 -> 12:16 AM) You may act like you're all for freedom of speech but all you do is twist people's words to paint them in a bad light.... I know it's common procedure for you to call people you don't agree with racist to elevate your moral high ground, but the person has to at least give you an opening. You're just making s*** up at this point. You've done a great job of putting him in his place after he did what you said he did. I enjoy your posts on this topic. I do the same thing when my longer posts get one line quoted out of context by certain people on the board. Some of us understand your point(s) and do not think you are racist. It's hard to 'win' in a discussion like this, however.
  16. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 18, 2017 -> 07:33 PM) I have no self control and have to respond to all of your mischaracterizing and faulty conclusions here. 1.) That wasn't a matter of a qualification. It's a "LAUNCH" program. An acronym that starts with Latin American and African American. I was not allowed the same head start because of my skin color. Companies give opportunities to certain minority groups at an earlier juncture than age equivalent students of other races. That's discrimination and if the ethnicities were swapped in this scenario you would entirely be up in arms over it. I understand that certain minorities went through a lot of s*** at the behest of fair skin people. That being said, my family hasn't been here long and my family was poor as recent as my parents' generation. I don't believe in reparations being forced on upon people of similarly fair skin when my ancestors were in Italy, Ireland and Poland being poor. 2.) I don't blame the system for a minority getting a scholarship or "my" job I blame the system for not offering me the same opportunity as others. There's no white male scholarship. There's no early start in business for white guys. I blame the system for preferring to hire people other than white males because it's better for the organization's reputation. All I ask for is a meritocratic process but I guess I am racist loon for that. You would think that is in the best interest of all fair-minded individuals. That being said, I accomplished everything I set out to before I went to college. I just wish I didn't have as much debt as I do now and I wished scholarships were offered solely on merit/participation as opposed to being based on things that are outside of an individual's control. 3.) "If I hadn't been born with my privilege there is a chance Id be in jail." What does that even mean? While I wouldn't stoop to the level to misconstrue someone's words into making them seem racist to make my point, I could easily say, "Oh, so all non-whites are criminals?" This is such a silly statement. I am not criminal because my parents are good people. My parents planned to have children they could afford and had the personal attributes to foster and nurture myself and my siblings. If my parents were purple and had the same values and priorities I wouldn't just end up in prison because I am not white. You'll say, "You don't know what it's like, you've never dealt with police as a minority." That's true and I don't deal with them as a majority either. Ever since I graduated to legal drinking age and bought a decent radar detector I have had no relationship with police officers. The extent of our relationship is me nodding at them when I get on/off the train. Your posts are well thought out and very reasonable. In any true discussion about this issue, your takes are very valuable.
  17. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 16, 2017 -> 10:08 PM) I actually bet many of them would, just like I do - as someone in the entertainment business who knows a lot of people in the entertainment business. I wish they'd be asked about it, then, put them on the spot like others who have to admit to "white privilege" when approached on campus last year. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 17, 2017 -> 06:33 PM) That isnt how I interpreted what she was saying. right after she said MMA, and people started cheering, she said "those are not 'the arts'". I think her point was if you remove movies and music etc all you have is football and MMA, and that isnt everything we need(according to her). I thought it was a strange shot at MMA and Football for sure That's why she shouldn't have gone there at an awards show. Yes, I applaud her first amendment rights. Doesn't mean it was a proper speech. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 18, 2017 -> 01:12 AM) you're literally, 100% ignoring my words. Being white puts you ahead of the pack inherently. What you do with that advantage is up to you, but that doesn't mean you don't have the advantage. So what do you want America to do about this issue? In a perfect world what is the solution so everybody can get along and prosper?
  18. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 18, 2017 -> 07:06 PM) I stopped reading here. Never once complained about how successful Jews are and you can't quote me doing so. There's a big difference between acknowledging their disproportionate amount of wealth in this country and complaining about it. I typed up that post and thought to myself that I shouldn't I even press post because I'd get a silly response like this. Amazing you can try and paint me an anti-semite when one of the underlying points of my post was that the whole idea of affirmative action is bs when you look at the Jews. They're the most discriminated people in the history of the world but they keep on achieving despite discrimination. Amazing what a full embrace of family, education and sticking together can to for a culture's aggregate earning power. I thought your post was very professional if that's the right word and stated nicely and worthy of a read in a society that likes discourse. I'm glad you posted it, but I understand what you are saying about hesitating before posting it.
  19. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 18, 2017 -> 06:13 PM) I read your anecdote and I sympathize that someone you believe is less qualified than yourself received benefits that you did not get. But at the end of the day, its still better to be a white male in this country. I know its probably impossible to understand, but not being eligible for a scholarship or someone else getting preferential treatment at a job, doesnt really compare to the things that many minorities have historically gone through and that some continue to go through on a daily basis. I normally like your posts, but you really appear (to me at least) to not be listening to him. His story was pretty interesting. You basically told him, 'that's all well and good, but let me tell you how it really is.' All I know is people are people. Why can't we all just get along?
  20. If we're going to go down the tubes, we could have at least gone down the tubes with Bernie. Free healthcare; free college. s***, we could have given that a try, since like SNL said, we're all going to die in the next four years with Trump as president. I'm sick of our health care system. It plain sucks. I challenge any middle class American to survive a one week or 10 day stay in the hospital. Can you say BANKRUPT? (I have to give an addendum to all my posts saying I STILL am glad Hillary has been denied the oval office)
  21. I put Tom Hanks but I don't think any of the candidates mentioned in this thread except for Jesse V are very good.
  22. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 15, 2017 -> 04:35 PM) That's not really what privilege means, though. It doesn't mean you automatically "win", just that it's generally easier for you. Who gets credit for starting this white privilege issue nationally? Who is the one person who first brought it up? Somebody should ask the liberal white Hollywood people if they are willing to admit their white privilege. I wonder how many would cave and smile at the interrigator and say, "Well of course I do. Thanks for asking. Of course I admit my white privilege, every day of my life."
  23. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 15, 2017 -> 08:15 PM) http://observer.com/2017/01/the-clinton-fo...iative/?ref=yfp Clinton was the greatest politician of his time, and the most flawed in terms of understanding his own weaknesses...perhaps, ultimately knowing that he could easily manipulate people to forgive him is what led to his ultimate undoing. But brilliant political mind and grasp of policy minutiae, the complete anti-Trump (except in one key way, that both were a boon for reporters/ratings/coverage). Ironically, he knew all along how important states like PA, Michigan and Wisconsin would be but was ignored by his wife's campaign until it was too late. All that because of the South Carolina primary in 2008 against Obama. Sad that even those closest advisors like Band and Huma Abedin ended up as collateral damage along the way. Luckily for Greg there is no Chelsea for president groundswell to worry about anymore. Yes, I would think Chelsea's possible bid is over. Only hope for her is if she really wants to get in politics, she'd have to win an election in some state as mama did. Like governor of Illinois or senator of New York or something. I mean she could run off her name like Trump, but that probably wouldn't get too far at this point, considering Hillary's bid was for the oval office failed miserably.
  24. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Jan 13, 2017 -> 07:58 PM) Right now, there is no new healthcare plan. It has been 8 years and there is still no replacement option from the GOP. Kellyanne detailed a plan on Hannity tonight. I confess I wasn't listening intently enuf to explain to you what it is, but she was rattling off details. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 13, 2017 -> 11:36 PM) For gosh sakes, greg. For gosh sakes. What up Reddy? What did I say that made you say that? What u disputing?
