  1. How depressing. Nine innings. No runs. Santiago is the new Bruce Chen??
  2. QUOTE (Scoots @ Jul 16, 2016 -> 04:43 AM) How does Albers go from being a lights out pitcher to...the "alternative" option out of the pen? Easy. Remember Humber? Guys just lose it. Albers is done.
  3. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jul 16, 2016 -> 03:58 AM) Scoreboard watching is pointless. There is no sustained offense and no power making it impossible to string victories together. Yeah one thing I don't waste time doing is check scores. I know one thing and that's this team is not a playoff contender. At some point they are gonna start playing Saladino every day and that will be an overdue step in the right direction. p.s. I didn't know Conor Gillaspie was on the Giants.
  4. Nice job by Lawrie and Frazier there. Lawrie certainly plays the game the right way. He's much better than Beckham IMO.
  5. Nice hit by Frazier. I don't despise him even though I've called for trading him. He has never annoyed me like Dunn did and LaRoche did despite the sub .200 average.
  6. The Sox are a weird team. Has Santiago ever pitched a game as good as this one? This has got to be a career highlight.
  7. If Britt Burns had won Game Four vs. the O's the Sox were a lock for the WS with an automatic Game Five home victory behind LaMarr Hoyt. One of the biggest chokes in Sox history not scoring one run in 9 innings and losing in 10 on the Oriole homer.
  8. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 16, 2016 -> 04:25 AM) Seems like a lot of complacency in the Braves series and now this one. Still seems strange how they are handling the rotation this weekend. So true. Why didn't Q start tonight and Sale tomorrow? WTF? What are we going with the back end for? QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 16, 2016 -> 04:27 AM) Sox fan since 1959. Nellie Fox was my favorite player and my first glove was a Nellie Fox model. I have just always stayed loyal. I don't always likevwhar I see either though LOL. Thanks for your kind words Cool. My first glove was Ron Santo which was good cause I was a third baseman through and through. Of course he stated during his life he hated his year on the Sox.
  9. Sox having trouble solving former Sox pitcher. ... again. Why did we trade him again? Santiago would look good on our staff.
  10. Hawk's in one of those ornery moods which is perplexing. Stoney just agreed with his point and Hawk had to bellow, "He (ump) hasn't missed a pitch!" Hawk needs a cup of coffee or some beer to lighten up.
  11. Former Sox pitchers/hitters normally fare well vs. the Sox.
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 16, 2016 -> 04:16 AM) Greg, Sox haven't been bad on the road this year. Actually have been great outside of the AL Central debacles Yeah I haven't checked the overall road record lately. Now that you mention it it's probably fairly close to .500.
  13. El Rockin, you live in Montana. How'd you become a Sox fan? I stand by my statement you are the best Sox fan in history. You are loyal no matter the score or the style of play. I used to be like you, but got jaded because of our bizarre penchant to blow games in the wildest of ways late in the Ozzie era and all but one year of the Robin era.
  14. Hawk already sounds a bit deflated. I wonder if he's getting sick of being the "road game" announcer. I would think only broadcasting road games where the team has blown chunks under Robin would grow tiresome. I'm no broadcaster but I would think home games have more pizazz for the announcers. p.s. However as a rebuttal to myself, Hawk just mentioned his grandkid's home run today which means he probably is having a blast seeing a few of his games rather than none.
  15. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jul 15, 2016 -> 02:06 PM) Now you're starting to get it. Part of the solution is getting more people to at least realize that it exists. Which seems to be happening more and more. My point is anybody who is not mentally challenged knows white privilege exists. Of course there are inherent advantages to being born white. The enemy here is the rich white bastard and his offspring who run the country because of their wealth. They are the people they need to admit their white privilege. They are the ones who never hire African Americans. They are the ones who deep down are probably happy when cops rough up African Americans so everything will always be the same. The Black Lives Matter protestors need to march in front of the homes of these 1 percenters. They are the ones who won't admit their privilege. But as usual they go after the little guy. Of course I understand there is white privilege. My answer to that is ... what do you want me to do about it? The protestors aren't going after the rich f***s, so why should I go tell them to admit privilege or educate them? Of course I acknowledge it, but I am not going to acknowledge anything to some angry rude classless mob telling me to admit it. Tell the rich white f***s about it; don't tell me or my friend, the guy who faced all odds with his mother dumping him on abusive grandparents who basically made him a maid and made him pay his own freight even as a young kid. Now he's a millionaire and not so eager to rekindle any kind of relationships with his family.
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 15, 2016 -> 10:50 AM) Do you think all the die-hard Republicans in this thread are volunteering to send their sons and daughters to fight against ISIS? Are there any die-hard Republicans in this thread or on Soxtalk at all? Seems to me this is a Democrat-dominated board; in the vicinity of 90 percent to 10 percent. Terrible loss of life in this tragedy. What.A.World. Horror after horror every week.
  17. Now that Trump picked a chump, you just know Hillary is dying to pick a woman to be her running mate. I'm sure she's just a tad bit torn however. She's probably not wanting to push her luck going with an all female ticket. My prediction is she'll do so, however. She knows Trump is weak and has no chance in hell of beating her. I'm sure she'd much rather have a female pal in Washington to shoot the breeze with on a daily basis the next eight years rather than some gruff man. My guess is she's dying to pull the trigger and name a fellow female but a tad scared SOME members of the public might freak out and be afraid of two women in charge. Is Warren on the record saying she won't accept a Veep bid?
  18. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 15, 2016 -> 03:43 AM) Lol that rnc convention schedule. Setting the tone for all the mocking of that convention you'll be hearing from the pundits. Man these 4 years went fast. I remember the same thing four years ago. Once they get that Republican convention out of the way ... let the partying begin with the Democratic convention! BTW I listened to the most awesome youtube video yesterday. Somebody made a list of the 10 questions the ladies of The View asked Michele Obama last election campaign and compared them to the 10 they asked Romney's wife. LOL. They threw Obama's wife 10 softballs about her favorite forms of nature, living in such a big house, Barack's hobbies, etc. Then for Romney's wife they gunned her down. The first question was grilling her on abortion, Whoopi Goldberg had some long technical question about the economy and on and on. Amazing how divided our country is Democrat vs. Republican. Damn I wish there was a GOOD third party to shut up people in the Democrat party who have such an easy route to the White House cause of the liberal media and Hollywood.
  19. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jul 14, 2016 -> 09:21 PM) By being white, you have certain privileges, you just do. A broken household growing up would impact any child, but that doesn't mean he didn't have privileges elsewhere. And that's not to say he didn't overcome a ton to be successful or even just to get to a normal household later in life, no one is saying take that away from the individual (or if they are then they're wrong). It can be a real touchy subject because you have someone like you mentioned where they truly had some bad s*** happen to them growing up, and it was awful and hard to overcome. But what was the support like around them? The community? The police? It's hard to acknowledge that it may have been even worse, or the individual may become super defensive because they know they had a ton to overcome and feel like it's being diminished, but in a good dialogue on this topic it wouldn't be diminished, instead it should revolve around "yes you went through that, but what helped you out of it? Is that something that could've been impacted by your environment? Your skin color? etc." Suddenly you may be thinking "yea I went through a lot, but calling the police I knew would help, not make it worse or even have a fear of the officer shooting a family member because they 'felt' threatened upon entering the household." It's not to diminish one's own experiences, it's to open their eyes on how different it could've been. Good post. It is a touchy subject because of situations involving people like my friend. I see what you are saying. Even though my friend got dumped on his grandparents who didn't make any money and abused him and made him work for his keep starting in high school, getting jobs, giving him nothing, making him pay for his own college, etc., he does have the innate white privileges. That is: More likely to get hired, especially in a state like Kansas with so many whites; isn't gonna get harassed by the police, etc. Yes there is innate white privilege; of course there is. I think you'd have to be a red-neck asshole to not agree with the protestors there is white privilege. At the same time, to me, it's something I would never acknowledge to a mob that wants me to flunk my English exam cause they are in my face in the college library wanting me to trash myself by screaming out I am white privilege. To any of the protestors it to me is a great topic to discuss 1 on 1. But you get some mob trying to make me do something like declare white privilege, f*** them all. I read that article and it's a good one. Yes there is white privilege benefiting those like my friend and the guy who wrote the article despite their being poor. I mean I'll sign a document saying I recognize white privilege if that's what the protestors want. But I'm not going to let them intimidate me like I've done something wrong in merely existing. Issues like this make me wonder if the races will ever truly co-exist. I guarantee you there are asshole rich white business owners who would never hire an African American over a white. There are cops who will always be mean to blacks. So what's the solution? It's not going around as a mob knocking on doors demanding the residents admit their white privilege.
  20. QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Jul 14, 2016 -> 08:58 PM) When the media did mention Clinton, they usually accurately reported that she had more delegates and was more likely to win, which is what happened. That's the point. There was a Bernie Phenomenon about to take off and the media wouldn't cooperate and wouldn't buy in. His victories were laughed off by the Chris Matthewses who said it does not matter; Hillary has too many superdelagates and is a runaway winner and it's inevitable. Had the media done what they usually do: nonstop covererage of red-hot Millenial favorite Bernie for a couple weeks I think he'd have carried the momentum into the convention. The media didn't want a split convention or convention drama; their story this time around is the coronation of Hillary Clinton and they are going to get what they want. In four years when she runs for re-election, it'll be very boring as she might as well run unopposed. Why would anybody want to run against her and get stomped?
  21. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 14, 2016 -> 10:14 PM) A very apt analysis by Josh Barro: http://www.businessinsider.com/hillary-cli...ls-trump-2016-7 I like that Hillary has lost some supporters, but you can't deny my scenario being the correct one. I wish people would see what I see. Republican convention: Coverage will mock Trump having a "winner's night" where coaches praise him and players. His speech will be mocked at best; at worst they'll point out he didn't appear "Presidential" and offended many people, etc. He'll drop a little in the polls right after the convention. Then the Democratic convention will be back to the normal type of convention. Exhilarating speeches in support of Hillary capped by what will be dubbed the greatest speech of all time: Hillary's accepting the nomination, humbly yet forcibly as the first woman's presidential candidate. She will be praised universally from all media and celebrities and that will be that. There will be no real negative coverage of Hillary to turn the tide leading up to November and her eight year cycle begins.
  22. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jul 14, 2016 -> 08:53 PM) Acknowledging privilege is really just another way of saying "take a walk in X person's shoes", but hopes to go a bit farther than that. Sure, I've worked my ass off to get where I'm at, but what if I grew up hungry? What if I was constantly afraid of walking down the street? What if I had to take care of my family before I could study and do homework? What if my teachers didn't give a crap about me? What if I couldn't afford to play baseball? What if there wasn't even a baseball team in my neighborhood? It's not apologizing for what you have, it's acknowledging that just because you got to some point doesn't mean others had the same path to it. Once you allow that then you start thinking about what differences there could have been, how could it have impacted you? Once you start asking questions like that you can start applying it to how you can impact the environment of those going through the struggles that you may not have had to go through. You worded that well. I like what you say. But I am willing to say that in a 1-on-1 situation with a person. Why? Cause like I said there are whites I know who also were disadvantaged compared to me. Making someone admit their white privilege is just rude. Now you might say even my white friend whose dad was living paycheck to paycheck and couldn't pay for my friend's college had white privilege just cause of all the inherent rights whites have over blacks. That's fine, too. I don't think some white kid writing a poem apologizing for his privilege is accomplishing anything. I like what you wrote here: "It's not apologizing for what you have, it's acknowledging that just because you got to some point doesn't mean others had the same path to it. Once you allow that then you start thinking about what differences there could have been, how could it have impacted you? Once you start asking questions like that you can start applying it to how you can impact the environment of those going through the struggles that you may not have had to go through." However, like I said I know a lot of whites who also "did not have the same path to it." My friend's mother dumped him when he was 5 on her parents who were poor. They abused him and treated him like s*** and he made it on his own. He's white and WAS NOT PRIVILEGED. Try telling him to declare his white prvilege.
  23. Since this is the thread about white privilege, did you see this poem from a white kid saying he's sorry for being privileged? This 'privilege' thing is kind of goofy. I think any white that makes a big deal out of this alleged privilege thing is troubled. There's no way in hell I'm going to be bullied into saying I have privilege. The rich f***s who run American businesses and the CEOs and their bratty kids who have never had to work a day in their lives (who yes, are mostly white) are the privileged assholes not a middle class white guy like me struggling to put food on the table. f*** you to approach me in a library and call me priviliged. I've worked my ass off just to survive. This privilege stuff bothers me because it's just rude. Yes African Americans who did not have a dad pay for their college have it tougher than a white guy like me whose dad did pay for college. Of course it's tougher. Big deal. I have a lot of white friends whose dad could not put them through college as well. Life is not fair. I'm suspecting in 100-200 years everybody will be the same below the ultra rich business owners. there will be the 1 percent wealthy and everybody else with the same wages and the same benefits and the same cars and houses. is that what the privelege people want??? http://www.cnn.com/2016/07/13/us/teen-slam...-hln/index.html
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 14, 2016 -> 05:03 PM) I don't think the media took Sanders very seriously either. They were quite scared of Sanders' threat to Ms. Clinton and made sure he didn't ride momentum to the nomination. If the media had jumped on his bandwagon when he was routinely clobbering Clinton in that stretch of primaries, he had a real chance in California. But every one of Bernie's victories was shrugged off with, "Clinton has all the superdelagate support and Sanders has no chance." Very unfair and sad. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jul 14, 2016 -> 06:09 PM) I don't think the DNC did anything to stop Bernie Sanders. A small name candidate lost to the more popular well know candidate. Yeah the public perception already has Hillary blowing away Bernie in a rout when in reality Bernie actually gave her a hell of a fight against all odds. No money and no media on his side. He should have been given superstar coverage when he started blowing her out of the water in that one significant stretch of primaries. I don't understand why the media wants Hillary so badly. It's like they take it personally when it's even suggested somebody might beat her.
  25. OMG what a speech by Craig Sager at the ESPYs tonight. Please watch the segment that led into his speech and his speech. Touching and beautiful. Inspirational. Will be played over and over as Jim Valvano's speech. Hopefully Sager will kick leukemia, but what a great great speech. He mentioned mind over matter. He thinks one's mental state of mind can help cancer patients be stronger than most believe they can be during chemo. For instance, they showed Sager getting chemo in Houston, driving himself (no limo here) to San Antonio for a game, returning to Houston the next day (driving himself) for more chemo. BLESS HIM. I hope he is cured!
