QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Sep 14, 2014 -> 07:30 PM) Sounds like you really know this girl and her family. Glad you're able to be a character witness for them and prove to us that the girl who broke a rule and refused to accept the consequence was really just a good ole American hero coming to the rescue of her mentally-ill mother. Good thing people never lie when they get in trouble or else we may need to hear both sides of the story before we jump to conclusions. I tell ya ... I'm really trying to remind myself on all these stories to wait for more facts, cause I have very little confidence in the media these days. The coverage of Ferguson was a fricking disaster in terms of misinformation, etc. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 14, 2014 -> 11:40 PM) who cares if she was "entitled," that doesn't change the ridiculous overreaciton I do agree. Now somebody pointed out, her behavior in 2014 was so erratic maybe she was a danger to students and teachers; perhaps she had a knife or gun or bomb. I am willing to listen to those who take that position, hence the cops tackling her in response. My guess is, though, since this was cell phone and only cell phone related, the teachers/principals/cops could tell there was no imminent danger in that regard.
  2. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Sep 15, 2014 -> 01:19 AM) De Aza just had a bad year. He was perfectly fine before that. Solid average all around player. I guess you are right, but I think he had 2 bad years, right? This year and last year. I think he's had a two homer game in Baltimore as well as a game in which he had 2 triples, which is probably a team record. I'm assuming they love him in Baltimore right now. Like I was saying though, if he becomes a stud leadoff hitter/outfielder, it's time to question the Sox ability to coach/motivate players. I mean, seriously. DeAza like somebody likes to say was a "bucket of suck" for two seasons in a row in Chicago.
  3. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Sep 15, 2014 -> 12:18 AM) Funny thing in all this rooting for wins or losses is that no matter which way you root for, it has zero impact on if the Sox actually win or lose so I fail to see what the complaining is about if some fans choose to hope for a higher draft pick. You speak the truth.
  4. QUOTE (1dog @ Sep 14, 2014 -> 10:27 PM) But Hawk keeps telling me that he has a chance. And he looks like Maggs. This sounds like I'm being the complete Hawk homer that I am, but I think he looks like Maggs, too. Facially AND hitting wise and defensively. Am I crazy?

QUOTE (juddling @ Sep 14, 2014 -> 02:40 PM) Why do i get the feeling that if the parents were called/brought in they would be furious that their little princess was asked to give up cell phone. The girl has a false sense of entitlement that she got from somewhere....... I did read the school has a policy if you are texting or talking on phone it is confiscated and you have to pay 15 bucks to get it back. That is awesome policy. I wonder what policies are in college. If some brat is using their cellphone during your lecture, can you kick them out of class or take the phone? I would think all kids are doing in college lecture halls these days is surfing the Web and texting. What do teachers do nowadays? That would be annoying if you were trying to give a lecture and half the class is texting. I'd tell the little darlings in my class if I see you texting your grade immediately goes down a letter. The administration probably wouldn't back me up, though.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 14, 2014 -> 05:09 AM) So she thinks she is above the rules? OK. Greg, you left out the part where she ran away from everyone when they tried to take the phone. How are they supposed to know what she does or does not have on her? Maybe she is running because she has drugs, or a weapon that could get her arrested. She escalated the situation by running. As far as being above the rules in your first sentence ... I said she should be suspended and they could have calmly diffused it by telling her to get in the principal's office, wait for her parents to pick her up and suspend her. If she runs out the school door, ditto. Suspend her via a phone call or demand a meeting with parents later. However you bring up a good point. If they are concerned about a weapon, I guess in this day and age that justifies force in a school. I guess if you use common sense, you would have to deduce she has no weapon because of the ongoing conflict solely about the cell phone. there's no discussion of her being a threat in any way. But you are right in that if there was concern about her blowing up the school the three cops should tackle her I guess. Seems a stretch but I can see your point.
  7. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Sep 14, 2014 -> 08:53 AM) This team makes me tear my hair out. This awful season gets even worse with 4 straight meaningless wins, and beating the Twins makes it even worse. This team just continues to kick us in the nuts. After today's 2 meaningless wins..... Sox lost games on....every single damn team in baseball. But below are the teams we lost a full 1 and 1/2 games on.... Houston, Colorado, Minnesota, Boston, Padres The Sox still have the 9th pick, they are 12 GB of the #1 pick, are 5.5 GB of the #5 pick, and are 2.5 games ahead of the Reds for a protected pick. All you guys rooting for losses probably play the 'don't pass' line in Craps. No fun.
  8. QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 14, 2014 -> 01:59 PM) I'm not going to be blinded by the Viciedo mist. It's nice he's padding his stats when we are out of it but he's got the same violent swing where he gets pull heavy and forgets about right field. With his approach, he will occasionally get hot and go on a homer streak. He is what he is, IMO. I hate just what you described about Viciedo. But ... can he improve? 21 homers can turn into 30 in a hurry with his talent if he ever wised up as far as his approach.
  9. QUOTE (lord chas @ Sep 14, 2014 -> 04:38 AM) I played for Badke at St Xavier back in the day. A great coach and personality that will get kids to come to Rice. I wouldn't be shocked to see them be a championship contender soon Cool, Lord Chas. Is he big on defense? Defense wins. QUOTE (danman31 @ Sep 14, 2014 -> 05:23 AM) Plenty of teams are having success with the spread in high school. Why do you think there are so many college QBs coming in so ready at such a young age? You need to have the personnel to run a pass-heavy spread, but plenty of the big schools have that and Illinois isn't even that good when it comes to high school football. Interesting, danman.
  10. I like to follow Illinois high school football from afar. My question to you is: Do you think high schools should run the spread? I see Loyola QB had six interceptions in one half in its opener. I was watching Brother Rice play Loyola on The Cube and I just don't think high school QBs should be passing so much. Seems like it's not a winning formula in high school. I would think a more old school ball control offense would work better in high school. As far as the games ... Are you surprised Rice beat Loyola? I wasn't a big fan of Rice's third-year coach til that big upset victory over Loyola making me think he may have a clue since the defense excelled.
  11. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 14, 2014 -> 05:00 AM) Yeah, and white or black, opening up multiple wounds on a four year old is unacceptable. Yes, AP is in a heap of trouble I'd guess. Those pictures are horrifying. Those cuts sting like hell I bet. And to a poor 4 year old? Geezus. Glad AP got caught. I can't imagine him playing the rest of the season.
  12. QUOTE (BaconOnAStick @ Sep 14, 2014 -> 02:58 AM) I'm still uneasy about giving up on Tank. Maybe Rock can tell us what the front office thinks about Tank. With DeAza kicking ass in Baltimore, the organization might be more apt to give Viciedo another year and hope the consistenccy button finally clicks. Like fathom said in the game thread his potential HR numbers might be too important to discard playing so many games in the Cell. He's definitely a frustrating player, though.
  13. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Sep 14, 2014 -> 04:00 AM) As one of the biggest Viciedo supporters here, this one feels great. I really do hope he's a 1B/DH/LF platoon or something next year. I may be mistaken, but I bet u tonight's blast guarantees him a spot on the team next year. As much as I despise Dunn the player, they do (on paper) lose his 20-25 home runs. Losing Tank's 20-25 would be a lot as well, especially if we don't acquire a bit booming bat. It would be nice to see somebody get through to Tank and have him take the next step. Maybe Abreu has inspired him. I hope so.
  14. Nice to see a lefty closer against our righty hitters. They can't throw that junk in the dirt from the right side that our boys sometimes chase for whiffs.
  15. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 14, 2014 -> 03:57 AM) I truly believe Viciedo should be back next year, as this team needs as much power as it can get. You are probably right. It would be nice if he could take that next step and become consistent. No doubt he has some talent offensively. Don't know if he can ever become consistent.
  16. Like somebody said on this board recently: This is the most exciting bad team in Sox history.
  17. Holy s***! Tank probably just earned a starting job next year with that blast. That was a BOMB.
  18. I wonder if Tank will be a star with the Orioles or somebody next year.
  19. We need a Tyler Flowers pinch hit home run.
  20. Thank goodness Avi is pretty fast. That's an easy DP ball for most hitters.
  21. Good job by Abreu in drawing a walk; ump didn't ring him up. Nice.
  22. Abreu too many foul balls; gotta put it in play. Is K coming?
  23. QUOTE (TitoMB @ Sep 14, 2014 -> 01:12 AM) He shoulda done the Home Run Derby. Not doing it clearly messed up his home run swing! /s Glad he see he finally hit the 100 RBI total. What a fantastic season from our ace hitter! Great observation. Can yu imagine how mad fans would have been on here had he competed in the derby and had these second half HR numbers? Wow.
  24. Nice hit by Gillaspie. He'd be fine as our third baseman next year provided his defense gets no worse than it was this year. Would be nice to sit him versus some tough lefties.
  25. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 13, 2014 -> 03:04 AM) He was essentially de Aza three years later....of course, knowing to dump Alejandro and tank before the season....maybe deaza seemed superfluous but we needed to give viciedo this season Martinez has good speed but isn't a great fielder...that said it would have been a huge improvement...even rajai Davis for that matter DeAza had that two-homer game recently and a great doubleheader yesterday. Makes me mad he didn't bring it with the Sox. Maybe we have good players but they just don't flourish in Chicago for unknown reasons. Should make it easier to trade Viciedo.
