I like the options much better when it's hot. Ice cold beer for example. I'm still traumatized by working outside one very cold Chicago winter. It's no accident that baseball is my favorite sport.

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 02:41 PM) I thought Chavez was on the market because Beane was looking to dump salary and Oakland wasn't going anywhere. Oakland not going anywhere? With the smartest man in the history of baseball for a GM? Something must be wrong, that can't be true.

Jeremy Roenick sounds off about fans

QUOTE(soxhawks @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 05:11 PM) he is mad that the players association didnt take the first deal, and is pissed off at all the people who are saying hockey is dead. i have to agree with him on the most part because as a hockey fan we don't need the people who rip on hockey to come back to it when it returns to greatness, hopefully. Who are you kidding? You need all the fans you can get. Your sport is comatose. If you don't realize that Roenick was an idiot for making those ill advised comments then all those empty seats that will surround you at your next NHL game will be proof. -
B Mac is not a Major League pitcher right now. In fact he's doing his best Felix Diaz imitation. I sure hope he proves me wrong because I expect little from El Duque the rest of the year. I think old age has caught up with him and he is nearing the end of the line. I've enjoyed this team as much or more than most, but the fact is we could use another serviceable and dependable arm and I think KW knows this.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 10:08 AM) Read their rulings...the court allowed specific sorts of displays of the ten commandments, where the things weren't displayed as part of an overt religious display. For example, the court allowed a display of the ten commandments on government property in Texas, where the religious message was a part of 17 different historical displays on a couple acres of property. They did not allow the overt display of only a ten commandments monument. In other words, they drew the line right where it should be...you can show the ten commandments if your goal is not to stricly promote Judeo-Christian beliefs. If you put it with something, so that it's not just promoting one religion over all others, then it's fine. You know I feel funny replying here because I am a seriously lapsed Catholic and not at all what one would be considered as religious or holy. That being said the Supreme Court is on a roll. One horrible decision after another. The culture, to use a very broad term here has changed greatly in my lifetime. Most folks have no idea what "separation of Church and State" meant to the original Founders of the nation. Basically this ruling bashes the First Amendment, and further marginalizes any expression of religion in the public domain. I'm sure in another generation or less any public display of religious faith will be oppressed to the point that religion will be driven underground like in the old Soviet Bloc. How ironic, as the Orthdox faith and Catholicism ( in Poland) are undergoing a rebirth in those nations. For this ruling to be consistent "In God We Trust", and any kind of prayer or invocation such as is practiced in the United States Senate will have to go, which I'm sure will happen in time. Yes the Supreme Court is on a roll. From saving terminally ill people from marijuana, seizing waterfront property for developers, to sandblasting away those vile Ten Commandments, you know they have our best interests at heart .

Good luck to Reed and Morse. Olivo looks like a washout. We shouldn't look back on this trade. KW is much better than when he started out. I give the guy credit, he learned from his mistakes.
-
Wasn't Jeremy Reed on a hot hitting streak last year? Let's see if these guys can handle MLB for a few years let alone a few weeks. In the meantime I'm glad we've got Freddy who is turning into quite a Cub killer thank you.

Anyone remember the old commercial with Bo Didley and Bo Jackson? Steve Phillips you don't know Didley!
-
They're 50-22 and he's helping the cause. This is a whole is bigger than the sum of its parts team. Let's enjoy them a little.
-
They've taken the "for public use" clause of the 5th amendment and destroyed it. Any other reading of this decision is foolish and dangerously naive. Nothing changed? I doubt it as local governments will probably go on a feeding frenzy. On another note a very close friend of mine had his own battle with his local government over "eminent domain". He won. If this decision had come down prior to his battle, I doubt he would have prevailed. As it was, he had to fight like hell and went through an Orwellian, Kafka like experience. There is no way to spin this. It's a dangerously terrible decision.
-
A horrible, abominable decision that could lead to bloodshed. There has to be some legislative relief. First you have so called conservatives taking medical marijuana away from pain wracked, terminally ill patients. Now you have so called liberals taking away grandma's house so someone can build a stripmall. It's high time for a real third party to take charge in this country. Remember Peter Finch in the movie Network? Well everyone should be "mad as hell."

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 11:32 AM) The Devil Rays are basically the 2nd most profitable team in baseball. I'm not aware of how much each team is making or losing. If what you say is correct then Devil Ray fans have no hope. Why the hell would Naimoli and his new partner (can't remember his name) spent any dough to build a ball club if as you say they are the second most profitable? I know Steinbrenner said that the have nots of baseball would not take their luxury tax money and spend it on player development and it seems he was right. Kevin McClatchy of Pittsburgh has been criticized for using it to prop up his bottom line. I think this is #500 for me. That's a lot less than some people here but how bout a small prize? A sucker or a hershey bar maybe?
-
Upon further review of those attendance stats, we're now above 60% of capacity and that is sure to improve, no matter how the team does the rest of the year. We're making steady progress, but people cling to old and outdated stereotypes. On other notes, Cleveland has fallen off a cliff haven't they? It wasn't that long ago when they had a gazillion or so straight sell outs. How long can the Devil Rays keep up the charade that they are a major league team?. Some minor league teams probably outdraw them. OK, back to your regularly scheduled programming. Didn't mean to hijack this.

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 11:15 AM) Here's 2005 MLB attendance figs: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/attendance Marlins rank 27th, ahead of only Cleveland, KC, and The Rays. I thought so. Thanks for the info. So this is just more evidence that we're not even an afterthought with the sports elite. Screw it and screw them. Just keep on winning. Again thanks FlaSoxxJim.

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 10:33 AM) They are still upset after losing the radio contract. No that's not it. Are there more Marlin fans in the nation than there are White Sox fans? Maybe. After all they have 2 World Championships in the last decade. They were underdogs in both years & it brought mega ratings. If they have more fans than us then surely their fans are not in the Miami area. Every time I see highlights of one of their home games it looks like Olympic in Montreal. Anybody know what their attendance is so far this year, or where you can access that info?

QUOTE(56789 @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 08:12 PM) IMO life in jail is worse than the death penalty, especially if he is only 25. Cable TV, weights, exercise rooms and basketball courts, law libraries. and sometimes even conjugal visits and assorted contraband of the legal and illegal varieties. What do the dead cops get?

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 23, 2005 -> 08:29 AM) Now see I like Downey. I think he is one of the better new writers in Chicago. I like reading you, but can't stand Downey who is in his second incarnation as a Chicago sportswriter.

Another article about the sox and thier fans
Yossarian replied to drowninginflame's topic in Pale Hose Talk
More rehashed same old same old crap. Is there no originality in sports journalism anymore? I want to say something about this north side/south side thing. I don't know what it's like now, since I left the area 20 years ago. When I was a kid I grew up in various north and northwest side neighborhoods and I was a White Sox fan. I was far from alone. The north side/south side thing was far more real with regard to football. I was a die hard Bears fan and hardly new the Cardinals existed. After my fourth grade year they didn't, as they moved to St. Louis. Also the population of the Chicago metro area is well over 7 million. It was 9,157,540 as of the 2000 census and has increased a couple of percentage points since then. -
QUOTE(YASNY @ Jun 23, 2005 -> 01:22 AM) Let me say that Ozzie has done a wonderful job this year. However, anyone that thinks he is the greatest Sox manager of all time is either: A. A kid, that has no historical perspective whatsoever. B. Just got off the short bus. C. or Both A and B. Thanks. Couldn't have said it better.

Kenny's comments on El Duque and making a move
Yossarian replied to Jabroni's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I was as big a critic of KW as anybody. Now, it must be said that KW has done one hell of good job putting this team together, while being constrained by the fiscal policies of his boss. If somebody does a lousy job, then go ahead and criticize, but if that person turns things around then some credit is due. Fair is fair. -
Give it a rest. Let him finish his career as a White Sox manager, then let the judgment of history begin.

QUOTE(retro1983hat @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 02:16 PM) Let's get those Northside Yuppies. I just hope we are not peaking too early like we did in 2000 and limped into the playoffs. But, the key is to get into the playoffs. Yeah Baby!!!! In 2000 our starters all belonged in a hospital ward. We didn't have a prayer.

QUOTE(moochpuppy @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 02:08 PM) I'll give you Tanner but Lamont had a .551 winning percentage in 3 plus years as manager. He never finished with a losing record and was canned in '95 after starting 11-20. Lamont was shafted! Ask them in Pittsburgh about Gene Lamont. Regarding the original post. I'd wait a while before I judge Ozzie. Right now I'd say he's a good motivator, but his game day strategies sometimes have me wondering.
