I'd say we'll know the answer in a week or so.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Aug 23, 2005 -> 12:34 PM) At least you've proved your point :rolly McCarthy's starts since demotion. IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA McCarthy 45.1 30 10 10 12 38 4 1.99 I'm glad he's been lights out at Charlotte since his getting slapped around good when he was called up. Sox prospects have a habit of turning into suspects. I think he's got a chance to be good, but five or six good starts in a row at Charlotte aren't going to convince me he's the next Cy Young winner. If we can clinch early let him have a start or two in September and see how it goes.

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Aug 23, 2005 -> 11:10 AM) by the way....I had no idea Miles Davis was born in Illinois...what city? Not too many jazz fans at Sox Talk are there? Miles Davis was born in 1926 in Alton, Illinois and raised in East St. Louis. His parents were educated and fairly well to do, his dad a dentist and his mother an accomplished musician. Miles Davis, trumpet player extrordinaire, was one of the most influential jazz artists in the history of the genre. Versatile, he had success in a variety of jazz idioms from bop to fusion. Illinois has produced many great jazz artists, among them, Nat King Cole, Dinah Washington, Gene Ammons, Johnny Griffin, AACM, Benny Goodman, Eddie Harris, Gene Krupa, Ramsey Lewis, Von Freeman, Judy Roberts and many more.

QUOTE(Colorado Sox Fan @ Aug 23, 2005 -> 09:27 AM) He'll get hammered, just like he did last time. He's not ready. What Colorado Sox Fan said.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 23, 2005 -> 11:06 AM) This was an actual letter to the editor in yesterday's Chicago Tribune. That took me aback for a second. Is it really that different to partake in an activity that you know will kill you, whether it be in a split-second from now, or years from now? I'd be curious to hear thoughts on this one. There isn't enough bandwith on this site for the rant I could let loose. Free people make free choices and for every Peter Jennings there are five or ten in the pink of health at the same age he was when he died. PC has gone too far. Triage and euthanasia for the "defective" are just around the corner. Hitler would be proud. Not that it's anybody's business but no I don't smoke.

One guy sounds like the south side of Chicago and the other guy sounds like the OC. Good luck to both of you. Don't let any lumps you may take discourage you and keep doing it. Buena suerte.

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Aug 20, 2005 -> 02:32 PM) You didn't say it here, so this isn't directed at you fathom. However, for the people that already KNOW this team's done for the year or they're going to get swept in the 1st round, what are you still watching for? You watch because your a fan and a fan always hopes for the best. This team is like a train wreck now. Saying that doesn't make you less of a fan.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 20, 2005 -> 03:27 PM) If we choke, KW won't have to worry about fielding a better team for the Sox. I don't think Reinsdorf will ever fire KW unless he does something really stupid or illegal. Reinsdorf is nothing if not loyal and he told Kenny's parents a long time ago that he'd take good care of their son. Look how long he stayed with Jerry Krause? If the Sox tank Kenny Williams will not get fired.

QUOTE(greg775 @ Aug 20, 2005 -> 03:09 PM) The Sox need to suck it up and regroup, and I think they will. Me too. We ain't gonna blow the 15 game lead. If we do, well our franchise is history. Well it will be bad, but not that bad. I think if they tank, KW will remember those big crowds of the summer of 05 and do his best to improve the team in the off season. KW is driven and has an ego. For all his early mistakes, and there were many he has worked hard to remold the team in a manner more suitable for Ozzie's style. I'm not going to rip him even if the team continues to tank, and I'm going to have faith that he'll be driven in the off season to pull a few rabbits out of the hat. Lord knows he has to with the boss he works for. Come on Jerry, you don't have to be like Steinbrenner, but open up the throttle a little. This is Chicago, not KC or Milw or Pgh.

Pods just changed the whole dynamic of the team. He'd get on base some kind of way, steal a base or two and drive the opposition crazy. Guys tried to hit behind the runner, make contact, anything to keep the inning life. Now the team is lifeless in a way that it never was in the corpseball days of the departed Jerry Manuel. Plus almost everybody is trying to hit a home run no matter what the situation is. Crede and Uribe are exposed as non major league hitters. Timo, I won't even go there. This team needs a bat badly and continued excellence from the starters.Good won't be good enough. Damn right I'm worried. Podsednik is missed badly.

QUOTE(Colorado Sox Fan @ Aug 19, 2005 -> 08:51 PM) mccarver has probably seen the sox play about twice this year. he doesn't know s*** about this team. He doesn't know s*** about much of anything. I could care less what he says. I cringe when I hear him speak. He's awful and a major joke in the broadcasting world.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 18, 2005 -> 08:36 AM) So another Pauly comment that's probably been blown out of proportion or something. Well it really wouldn't suprise me if he ran off to the Mets this off-season. Konerko has proven time and time again to have a bad case of foot in mouth disease. He should avoid microphones and concentrate on his hitting.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 17, 2005 -> 01:38 PM) http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-gas17.html If this happens, call it the Great Depression II, because we will have triple the unemployment rate currently, and about 15% inflation on top of it. This economic "recovery" will be over so fast it will make your head spin. I hope SS2K5 is right. This is the best case scenario at this point.

QUOTE(sayitaintso @ Aug 17, 2005 -> 11:36 AM) The Sox have been playing like s*** lately. They can't do anything that they did in the first half. If we don't get a bat, i think we are screwed. So do I.

Right now getting any kind of win would be great.

This is a great site for boxscores and stats of all kinds. Look up players find Timo and see how bad he sucks They have an interesting metric called batter/fielder wins. The higher the ranking the better the player and vice versa. Timo is very much in the negative. Anyway, like I did a long time ago I recommend this site. Lots of great stuff and a whole plethora of stats of all kinds. Box scores back to 1960. Timo sucks. It's there in black and white.
-
QUOTE(jphat007 @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 08:40 PM) Yah, lets just put this year in a vacuum and forget everything else. It has no bearing on anything. Maybe you like Timo, we all have our personal favorites. It doesn't change the fact that he's a real good 25th man on a real bad 25 man roster. Bully for him that he's Ozzie boy.
-
QUOTE(VAfan @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 07:30 PM) By all means, have your rant. But Ozzie is playing with our lead here, which, after tonight, may well be just 5 games over Boston. Perez, Uribe, and Blum are all well under .300 in OBP, and Crede is in a horrible slump. That leaves 5 guys to make an offense, with Contreras on the mound. Do you think we're going to rally for at least 5 runs tonight??? If we screw around and think we can beat Minnesota just because they are down on their luck, they would like nothing better than to lay it to us, as they have done in the 4th inning. All we would need would be a little pitching funk, which Buehrle and Garland both had in Boston, and we might not have the best record in the AL before August is out. You're absolutely right, but many have been lulled into a false sense of security by the great start. They're playing like crapola now, and it's foolish to think they can hit the start button again in time for the playoffs.

****OFFICIAL SOXTALK 2005 PREDICTIONS THREAD****

QUOTE(Mr. Chairman @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 06:00 PM) How about now, my hellerine friend? I was going to try to give you a decent reply but then I noticed you're banned. Por que? Do I have to worry too? -
QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 08:53 PM) People are probably going to beat me up over this and I really hope Im proven wrong but even with Carl back in the lineup I think its just too easy to shut this team down. They all ( with the exception of Pods and Gooch ) have a tendency to swing for a 3 run homer with nobody on base. If they persist like that in the playoffs its gonna be lights out for this team before we even finish printing the playoff tickets. I'm not going to beat you up. I pretty much agree. I'm also concerned about Pods, Crede, and Hermanson. All of them have physical problems. I remember in 2000 the Sox started the playoffs with a rotation that essentially belonged in the hospital ward. I never forget how much the loss of Big Frank has cost this team. Evened in his weakened condition, he struck fear in the hearts of pitchers, and gave those hitters in front and back of him better pitches to swing at. I'm very concerned.

Despite Best Record, White Sox Still Have To Prove
Yossarian replied to Moose78's topic in Pale Hose Talk
When you haven't won a pennant in 46 years or a WS in 88, then you're just going to have to prove it to all the doubters. That "lovable loser" stuff only works if you wear that cap with the cute little "C". -
QUOTE(JimH @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 07:56 AM) Well, if you can't get someone who's major league ready from outside the system, then you go with the best guy from inside. Ozzie is insisting on a leadoff guy, so this is the best guy in the system who knows how to play OF. In answer to Mike's post, yes, when you get down to your 8th guy it won't be pretty no doubt. However, they have OF's in the system and actually two who have performed pretty well at the AAA and AA level, those being Anderson and Owens. The only reason they might not want to bring these guys up is 40 man roster considerations. If that's the case then Borchard is your man. If Iguchi is hurt then hell yes get Harris up here. But Harris for LF? I don't get it. Oh man this sounds so depressing. In 2000 the Sox pitching staff fell apart before the playoffs, this year it looks like the starting lineup. I don't see any team as a serious WS contender if guys like Joe Borchard or Willie Harris are called on to make big contributions.
-
QUOTE(retro1983hat @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 06:48 AM) First off Manny Ramierez is the worst outfielder I have ever seen and I saw Carlton Fist try and play LF. That being said, Willie Harris is not a replacement for All Star Scott Posednik. Pods' defense is not good, but Willie can't can't can't get himself on base. He can't bunt and he can't hit the ball out of the infield. Mainly because he is not a ML caliber player. I want to look at him in my rear view mirror, not out in LF.
-
NL hitters may be fooled for a while, but they too will figure him out and the ball will then go flying out of the park again.

What are you doing down in Argentina? I would like to spend some serious time in Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. Maybe some day.
