QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 07:44 AM) I should add: I'm not declaring something stupid like "every dog has its day." I'm saying: "Just because your team won, doesn't mean you're a good GM." If your organization goes to hell thereafter, and was less-than exemplary before, that's a truer measure, IMO. So many of us waited so long for 05, for me anyway the reality exceeded expectations. It was great, but I wanted it to be the start of success, not the end. KW has lots to answer for, and I think your assessments of him are for the most part highly accurate.

QUOTE(SouthSide2004 @ Jul 22, 2007 -> 11:16 PM) Dumbest thing I've ever heard. I don't think it's dumb at all. It happens not just in sports, but in industry too.

Probably one of the most underrated and forgotten players in the history of the game. The stubbornness of his manager Al Lopez probably cost the Sox a chance at a WS victory in 1959. If you ever meet him, he is intelligent, witty and modest. What a contrast to some of the jerks in today's game. He deserves this.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 22, 2007 -> 02:58 PM) We've had this discussion repeatedly, but I'll still fire out that I think Gavin Floyd is going to be a good to very good pitcher someday. I don't. I think he's a stiff.

Why can't we raid Pittsburgh ?
Yossarian replied to WHITESOXRANDY's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(WHITESOXRANDY @ Jul 12, 2007 -> 01:14 PM) You're right not too many. I will just never forget that the flubs got Ramirez for free basically and they got Kenny Lofton thrown in. Call it a bulls*** internet rumor if you like, but someone I know and trust and is far more successful than I am told me that the Pirates were so strapped for cash, they were facing a payroll they couldn't meet. It was then that they traded Aramis Ramirez to the Cubs for next to nothing. -
Michael Vick Accepts Plea Deal Per ESPN
Yossarian replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Dog fighting is and has been very common, not just in the inner cities, but in many parts of the rural south. It's not considered wrong, just a part of the overall culture and lifestyle. I'm in no way condoning this, I think it's disgusting, and I've never liked Michael Vick. -
Ozzie is possibly the worst handler of pitchers I've ever seen, and in general a terrible game day manager. This game may have topped anything in the Bevington era. If the Sox are headed where I think they are, it's going to be a long time before we ever see the playoffs again. This game was managed mind numbingly bad. Are you listening George?

Supreme Court overrules racial selection in schools

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 29, 2007 -> 07:02 AM) I agree with this, and have said it myself before. The whole "activist judges" thing, which was banged on over and over again early in Bush's administration, is a complete and utter fallacy. Hell no, it's not. It's as real as the sun and the moon. There are many examples of judges at all levels, and of various political views, making law from the bench. It's disgusting, and has to stop. This ruling is one small step in that direction. -

QUOTE(chisoxfan79 @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 01:59 PM) Actually The Sox went on a nine game win streak after the dust up with Marriotti thats when they beat Texas the next day then Swept Cinncy, St. Louis, and won 2 against the Stros Personally I think this slide started last year when we lost that slugfest at the Urinal. Thanks for the correction. I thought it (the incident with the ST reporter) happened during the Cubs series. I agree about that Sunday game we lost, it was brutal. The pitching really went south (pun intended) after that game.
-
The Sox were 56-29 and then lost 2 out of three to Boston right before the 2006 All Star break. Just about a week or so before that, Ozzie had his little dustup with a certain cretin at the Sun Times. I don't know what cosmic significance it all had, but things have gone from bad (second half of 06) to beyond worse.

QUOTE(zach23 @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 09:58 AM) But he mentions that the Sox are outspending the Cubs by $10 million. If he aim is to make the Cubs look good and the Sox look bad as Hangar claims, why would he do that? Wouldn't Hangar's random fan in San Diego read this and think, "Wow, the Sox are right there with the rich-boys. That team must be good." I can only speak for myself. I see a definite bias, but if oftens takes on more subtle than overt tones. I've been reading the Chicago sports pages since, well let's just say since a long time ago. Many print and broadcast journalists in the Chicago market are wannabe Cub cheerleaders. Like I said before things are changing a little. If the Sox continue to field winning teams the situation will continue to moderate. It's going to take time.

QUOTE(zach23 @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 09:17 AM) Also, the tone of the story by Greg Couch is almost ridiculing the Cubs. How would that fit your theory that the papers are writing only positive things about the Cubs and negative about the Sox in order to sway popularity. I can almost see Couch laughing at the state of the Cubs as he writes that. The Cubs aren't as far away as they look, and can rebuild on the fly. They can be ready for next year as long as they don't become sellers. Best I can figure, if they would save $8.5 million by dumping always-hurt Wood, $9 million by dumping old Greg Maddux and $5.7 million by dumping ineffective Juan Pierre. And that would free up $23.2 million. On top of that, the other guys in shoes similar to the Cubs' in the rich-boys club -- the two L.A. teams, Boston, the White Sox and the Mets -- are spending about $10 million more than the Cubs. The above comes from the Couch article. Sounds pretty supportive if you ask me. I don't want to get into a crossfire, or be subject to personal insults. That being said, if the Cubs ever put together a true championship team then you'd see how badly most of the so called sports journalists in this town want to cheer on the Cubs. It is a Cubs town journalistically. I'm old enough to remember when it was the other way around, all though not to the degree it is now. We all have short memories. Remember the Cubs near miss in 03? If the Cubs hadn't bonked and taken advantage of their best opportunity in 95 years it would have been the biggest sports story ever in Chicago, maybe nationally. No need to tear anything down. Just build. So says Mr. Couch. Doesn't sound like a rip job to me.

QUOTE(klaus kinski @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 07:56 AM) THe Score is awful-same old tired people on the air-more commercials than programming-I hated it 5 years ago-hate it now Amen.

Ozzie seemed to have him on a short leash last night.

I don't have time to wade through all this. Whether you like it or not, whether you like Hangar or not there is significant media bias towards the Cubs in the Chicago market. It's been happening for a long time and the White Sox themselves did a lot to cause it. A number of bonehead decisions were made, and this predates the Reinsdorf era. Now the White Sox are at long last defending World Champions and the worm is starting to turn. I guess people want to focus on that more than the popularity of the lovable blues on the north side.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 02:15 PM) I'm going to say this now. I hate this f***ing trade. I don't care for it either. I get the feeling that more moves are on the way, so I'm not down just yet. Are they easing Frank out the door? Is Konerko going to be signed? What about another outfielder? I'm just going to wait and see before I get all upset. Kenny had a great offseason last year, so he gets the benefit of the doubt. We just won a World Series. -
HIV+ Linebacker Arrested For Sexual Assault
Yossarian replied to Mercy!'s topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
About ten years ago or so ago a good friend of mine was attending a conference of medical and related professionals. One of the seminars was on HIV. A graphic presentation was given complete with power point and a number of overheads and other high tech accompaniments. It was shown in stunning detail how HIV overpowers and disables the immune system. My friend said the affect on the audience was powerful, at one point there was total silence in the lecture hall. I'm not going to take a smug and superior attitude towards a football player who doesn't have the prequisite eloquence to suit some of you. Maybe the risk is very small, but he has every right to be concerned. If you get this there is no reset button. -
QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 16, 2005 -> 01:08 AM) Welcome to Soxtalk! It's nice to see another longterm (re: old dude) Soxfan join the board. There's only a few of us around here. Yes there are. Not to highjack the thread but hats off to you for sticking with Joe Crede. You were right and I was wrong and I'm damn glad. I always liked Joe but yes I did doubt him. Again you were right and I was wrong and that's great. SCalSS59 nice to meet you. I actually remember the 59 WS. I actually remember the 05 one too. A much better collection of memories I'd say.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Nov 14, 2005 -> 10:44 PM) I really, really liked Dolgin. He had big shoes to fill and did damn good imo. Yes he did. Anybody who knows him please give Bryan Dolgin an attaboy from me. It was a pleasure to listen to Rooney call the game and Dolgin do the post game show. Of course we miss Dave Wills, but Dolgin did good being his own man. I'm very happy the Sox won a World Series, but definitely not pleased about the broadcast situation. Farmer is not a play by play guy. The prospect of Mike North having anything to do with the broadcasts is postively revolting. I hate the Score. They've made a mess of things.

QUOTE(GasHeGone @ Sep 22, 2005 -> 08:05 PM) Stop ripping on Ozzie everyone. Can't you see that no one wants to get the f***ing job done for us? At the end of the day, it's the players who are f***ing things up right now. Ozzie trying to give Marte some confidence, and Damaso is blowing his chances. Good move by Ozzie to get Damaso out right away. Bad move by Ozzie for bringing him in the first place. -
QUOTE(DMoneyIsMine @ Sep 20, 2005 -> 08:57 AM) They ain't the Brewers or the Cubs. Since becoming a franchise, 70% of all the White Sox' seasons have been winning ones, so when you say they have a poor history as a team, you're a moron. They are a perennial good and competitive team. And you should all be proud that the Sox are always good and always enjoyable to follow. If you go back to 1901, the innaugural year of the so called modern era of baseball, the White Sox are now in their 105th season as a bona fide major league baseball team. In that time the White Sox have had 57 winning seasons, 44 losing seasons and 4 in which they finished .500. So the White Sox have had a winning record 54.3% of the time. The breakdown by decade is as follows. 1901-1909 8-1 Won pennant in 01, no WS played. Won pennant and WS in 06 1910-1919 7-3 Won WS in 17, lost in 19 1920-1929 3-6-1 1930-1939 3-7 1940-1949 2-7-1 1950-1959 9-1 "Golden Age" Last pennant in 59 lost WS to Dodgers 1960-1969 8-2 "Golden Age" ends in 67. Near misses in 64 and 67 1970-1979 2-7-1 1980-1989 4-6 Great 83 season ends tragically against O's 1990-1999 6-4 Lost LCS to Toronto in 93. Strike ko's hopes in 94 2000-2005 5-0-1 Mirage of 00. Great collapse of 05? Totals 57-44-4 As of today the White Sox have an 8201-8016 record since 1901 for a Winning Pct. of .506 They have the fewest WS appearances of any of the original 16 teams but the Phillies have only won 1 WS to the White Sox 2. Draw your own conclusions about our "winning" history.

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Sep 19, 2005 -> 09:46 PM) I f***ING LOVE HOW MARTE DUMPS ALL OVER THIS CLUB, AND THEN GETS PUT INTO SERIOUS f***ING SITUATIONS THAT MEAN THE f***ING WORLD TO EVERYONE BUT HIM. GIVE ME COTTS, POLITTE, HERMY, VIZ, OR JENKS AT THE BEGINNING OF THAT INNING AND WE HAVE NO PROBLEM. WHAT IS OZZIE'S PROBLEM?? Ozzie's problem is that as a baseball manager he is intellectually challenged. He compounds the problem by playing favorites.
