2011-2012 OFFICIAL NBA LOCKOUT thread
ChiSox_Sonix replied to southsider2k5's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 1, 2011 -> 11:02 AM) They could have stayed if they funded the new one and you can still have your Sonics just like Cleveland recreated their Browns. There have been teams that have tried to relocate for the exact same reasons (White Sox anyone) and they stayed. Those films and articles are very nicely put together from the Seattle POV, and I understand that there was alot of douchebaggery involved, but the fans and the city could have kept them if they wanted, instead they said it didnt matter if they left and their lawsuits were weak at best. A paltry 3,000 (est) fans showed up in protest to them leaving outside of the courthouse. I dont buy that it was all one-sided, and I certainly dont buy that Stern was at fault. Watch this film and read the Simmons article. It spells out everything that happened. I can't fault Bennett for wanting to bring a team to his hometown, but I can fault him for being a douchebag and lying and the way he handles it. I can fault Howard Schultz for selling so quickly to an out of towner without giving an ample chance for a local buyer to come forward. And I fault David Stern for, at best turning a blind eye, and at worst for facilitating this. Faulting the fans is ridiculous. They historically had been one of the best in the league ad Seattle itself has served as a hotbed for talent. The last couple years of their existence are not indicative of the fan base, as Bennett & Co. were doing everything in their power to turn people away. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 1, 2011 -> 10:49 AM) 3 out of every 4 voters wouldnt approve a subsidy to keep the team in town. They had a chance to give the owners a big f*** you we are keeping our team, but they didnt feel like it. Additionally Seattle has the opportunity to recreate the Sonics if they want as all of the logos and the name are protected by the city and the NBA. s*** even people in Cleveland could get it together enough to bring back their team. Are you serious? They funded Key Arena when it was built 15 years earlier, they funded Safeco and they funded wherever the Seahawks play. All within a short time span. Then, a billionaire owner from Oklahoma comes in and buys the team and demands an arena upgrade? No, that's bulls***. He also proposed a new building in one of the worst and most inconvenient areas of the city. It was a proposal designed to not receive support. I don't know if you ever read any of Simmons columns, or watched SonicsGate (great documentary by the way) or really paid attention to what happened, but Bennett never had any intention of keeping that team there. E-mails even leaked out confirming that fact. David Stern knew this, he and Clay are long time good pals. He did nothing to prevent this. And the city holds the rights to the name, logo, records etc because Clay Bennett bought out the last year of the lease from the mayor so he could leave a year early. This is not at all on the fans. What happened was disgusting and it should be eye opening to every fan of any team in any sport, because precedent has been set and it could happen to just about anyone. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 1, 2011 -> 10:26 AM) Stern MADE the NBA happen. Utah and Denver were about to fold before he became the commish and capitalized on budding superstars. The Sonics leaving had more to do with worthless fans than David Stern. This statement shows you have zero clue about what actually happened. -

I'm sorry for actual NBA fans if this lockout is as long as many project it is...but from a personal, selfish standpoint, I was hoping for this. I hope David Stern is even more vilified, I hope he is eventually, somehow, forced out of the league (unlikely) and I am grateful I won't have to hear about how good the Thunder are for a little while. I will never forgive David Stern for what he let happen to the Sonics, so anything bad that happens to him (or his league) I currently have no problem with. -
QUOTE (gfbaseball @ Jul 1, 2011 -> 08:34 AM) Leighton Pangilinan (1B) had a great game last night for the Voyagers in the 8-5 victory. Panda went 4 for 5 with a HR, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored. He's on a 6 game hit streak and has been red hot his last three games going a combined 7 for 12. He could be something special if he gets his poop in a group. He's just turned 20 a couple months ago so he's got time to figure it all out. Nothing overly exciting on the pitching side. Gehle was solid on the start going 5 innings and giving up 2 runs on 4 hits with 6 strikeouts. Scott Snodgrass game in for two innings of relief giving up one hit, unfortunatly a HR at that. He struck out six but walked three. I hear fiber pills work well for that

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 1, 2011 -> 08:37 AM) OK we have heard them all before... blow up dolls, wearing womens underwear, sex with fat girls etc... What should Adam Dunn do to break out of his slump? The more creative, the better. Tell Ozzie to call up Viciedo

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jun 30, 2011 -> 04:49 PM) Southwest Airlines should shoot a "Wanna Get Away?" commercial with Dunn. It'd be pretty funny. I'm mad at myself that that made me laugh -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 30, 2011 -> 04:19 PM) I don't even think Ozzie overuses him. He's used him pretty good this year. Problem is he's a non-contributor on this roster that can't be released due to still having about 7.5 million dollars left on his deal. Yes, he's getting paid too much for his role, but the initial complaint was over KW because of this lineup. That's what I was getting at. If we were the A's trying to compete with a bench player making that much that's one thing, but we're not. I'm not saying it was a good contract, but it doesn't suffocate the team either. Backups are going to get starts. The fact that all of ours seemingly are right now is not KW's fault. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 30, 2011 -> 04:14 PM) He got a hell of a of money to be a utility player. Arguing the contract is one thing, but it didnt handicap them from spending this year and it's not KW's fault if Ozzie overuses him. -

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 30, 2011 -> 04:11 PM) He's responsible for the crap Ozzie (whom I can't stand) has to work with. How on earth do you extend Mark Teahen? How? Why? Where's the logic. He was extended to be in a utility role. Screaming about bench signings is kind of ridiculous. Pierre? Obviously. Rios? He is losing that gamble. But to complain about the bench is a bit much. I'd love to see KW put together a couple teams with a more competent manager before I vilify him as well. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 30, 2011 -> 03:59 PM) Just don't get the logic of resting Quentin AND Konerko. Quentin, I get. But the only legit offensive threat we've had the last week, along with AJ? This is actually PK's first game off (not day) since June 4th. We have 10 straight before the ASB (and he'll be there), so a game off here does kind of make sense somewhere along the way -

QUOTE (Cali @ Jun 30, 2011 -> 03:55 PM) Seriously is there a stat out there showing how many times a player comes to the plate in a single season with the bases loaded? I feel like Juan has set the all time record this year He's 0-7 on the year with the bases loaded, 1 BB 2 RBI -

And now that Castro at bat looks even worse after Beckham's walk. Well the one positive is Cook looks horrendous so far. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 30, 2011 -> 03:44 PM) That's the thing, maybe he just can't handle this workload. That Indians gem he threw a few months ago seemed to impact his velocity for his next few starts. I guess we'll see then after this start what happens. I'm hoping for the best but I could see what you're worried about playing out too unfortunately. -

Ok that's a terrible at bat, even if he had gotten a hit. Up 2-0 in the count after a walk and a HBP. Should have been waiting him out.
