Sox need defense for serious run in 2010

QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 29, 2009 -> 10:56 AM) I'd be against any realistic plan that starts off trade Buehrle. That is the kind of hole digging that just never seems to accomplish anything. +1 MB should not go anywhere. He is the face of the franchise, he lightens the mood in the clubhouse, he is still very productive, and there's just no reason to let him go IMO. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 29, 2009 -> 09:57 AM) They have faced nothing like the Yankees offense to this point in the playoffs. Plus they aren't facing a pitcher for the next game at least. No but Jose Molina is in the lineup tonight... -

QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Oct 29, 2009 -> 10:13 AM) FSU has a ridiculous amount of talent now, almost their entire roster is made up of 4 and 5 star players. They also added a great defender in freshmen Michael Snaer. FSU, UNC, Duke, and GT have a close four horse race for the most talent in the ACC this year. FSU, GT, and UNC are more athletic than Duke. UNC and Duke are better coached, but having UNC at #4 and Duke in the top 10 is pretty absurd. UNC should be around 10-12 at best with questions at PG and SG. A bar league softball team is more athletic than Duke. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see FSU play well. I'm a UCONN guy but since FSU is my football team I've always rooted for them too. It just seems every year they get these good recruits and every year something happens where they are great one week and then go out and get some awful losses the next. I just don't have much faith in them. They lost a bunch of their scoring from last year and I still think they are another year away, which of course means Alabi goes pro and isnt around for it and the cycle continues... -

QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Oct 28, 2009 -> 05:10 PM) I've got a way too early Final 4 of... Michigan State, Texas, Kansas, West Virginia My dark horse is FSU, and my dark, dark horse is Richmond :-). FSU is always a dark horse and they never put it together. Alabi has the potential to be a beast but it's gonna be hard for them to significantly improve the year after losing Tony Douglass IMO -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 28, 2009 -> 06:52 PM) There was a very interesting quote that stuck out to me: Sounds to me like something was going on and my guess is it has to do with certain guys not listening him, not putting in the extra work, etc. I wonder who those guys are and whether I'm reading too much into this or not. No i thought the same thing when I read it the first time as well. -

QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Oct 28, 2009 -> 04:44 PM) Yes, everyone and their mother is picking Kansas. Dont believe the hype with Kentucky, its like a dirty wet dream there. Yeah you gotta go with Kansas at this point. Kentucky could be awesome but way too many unknowns aright now. Texas is gonna be a real tough out too. I really like Villanova also. -

QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 28, 2009 -> 09:28 AM) Priest Holmes had some serious hip injury, didn't he? Running back is an absolutely brutal position to play physically...the magic number seems to be about 30 years of age when they begin declining... With Priest Holmes it was something with his neck. Kinda fluky actually. He probably could have played another 2-3 years if that never happened to him. -

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 27, 2009 -> 10:48 AM) No no. I am saying that is the argument they are using. Not criticizing it. They very well may have some valid points if you believe universal / single payer is a bad idea. Ah ok. I got you now.
-
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 27, 2009 -> 10:14 AM) I've said for a log time now that i believe this is the first step of many. A drastic shift to universal, or single payer, or even a public option would be very hard. The first step iis to get the public option out there. Then once that is in place and people stop freaking out and realize it isnt so bad, then you move to universal. After that, then single payer... but I just dont see that happening in my lifetime. So you criticize the GOP for employing a slippery slope argument that points to exactly what you also believe will eventually happen?

QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 26, 2009 -> 05:02 PM) Again, I love how you guys rip on every single tv commentator. I would love to see a list populated of who you guys actually respect and believe to be good at what they do. Best: Al Michaels Brent Musberger Dick Enberg Jim Nantz Ernie Johnson Bob Costas Jay Bilas (when he takes his Dookie glasses off) Gus Johnson Bill Raftery Worst: Tim McCarver John Madden (wide margin) Billy Packerd Bill Walton Chris Berman Chip Caray Dick Vitale (the blatant ACC homerism is too much for me to take...I don't mind him when he acts sane though) -

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Oct 22, 2009 -> 09:16 PM) Getz is yet to prove he has the skills of a leadoff man. His OPB trends suggest he will never get that close. Furthermore, with below-average defensive skills and no pop at all, he is far from an ideal option for an America League club competing in a home-run hitters park.. I'm yet to see why people thing Getz will be so good, must arguments suggest he'll turn into a radicaly different player.. I understand he's a smart guy, with great speed, but he's not much of a hitter and he's not much of a fielder. I'd let CJ Retherford compete for the job, and hope like hell, Nix can hit for a sustained batting average. The guy set records at Michigan, hit below .299 just once in college/minors, had a pretty respectable OBP in all his minor league seasons except his first in AA (the year he hit .256) and until last year always had a positive walk to strikeout ratio. He was a rookie this year and improved in the second half. I just really don't get why he has no chance of improving when all he's done his whole life is hit the ball and get on base. There's really no reason to believe he can't swipe at least 30 bases. He plays smart and makes contact. So he doesn't hit the HR. So? We don't need, nor could we afford, to have 9 players hitting 20 HRs a year. It won't happen.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 22, 2009 -> 11:55 AM) Blah. This is going to be a world series watched in between anything else on TV. Well assuming the Yankees win, pretty much all of New England along with NY/PA/NJ will be watching it. The ratings will actually probably be pretty good. -
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Oct 21, 2009 -> 11:27 PM) I think a lot of people get so invested in the player that they think Getz will be, they fail to see the player he is. I'll readily admit that i'm the same way with Jayson Nix. I just don't see Getz ever raising his OPB above the mid-330's, and if (a big if, i'll admit) Nix can raise his average to about .250, his defense makes him a dramatically better player. He was a rookie this year. He had an OBP of .340 in the second half of this year. It just completely baffles me how people continue to ride this guy. Look, he'll never be an all-star. We get it. But we're also not the Yankees, we can't have 9 all-stars hitting 20 HRs a year for us. Getz looked fine to me in the field and does little things much better than Nix; making contact, hitting behind runners, bunting etc...Getz is a baseball player. He plays the game the right way. He also was 25/27 in SB this year and missed a bunch of time. What that tells me is if he can raise his OBP and stay healthy he could potentially steal 35 bases a year. You put him in the 9 spot in our lineup and I'll take it. I've said it plenty of times but Chris Getz reminds me of the prototypical Minnesota Twin little infielder that doesnt seem to have great tools but just gets the job done and we all wonder how or why. Then we complain we don't have anyone like that blah blah blah. Well now we do. I'd think more people would be happy about that and recognize that what someone does in their rookie year plagued with injuries shouldn't be viewed as their ceiling. Nix supposedly has so much room to grow but somehow Chris Getz has topped out? Sorry, I just don't buy it. Getz is a gamer, I expect him to have a solid 10 year career in this league.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 21, 2009 -> 04:30 PM) So if we claimed him on waivers, that means we'd lose him to send him to AAA correct? So he's insurance if we can't sign Kotsay, and perhaps then the 5th OF behind Wise, Quentin, Rios, and perhaps Pods if he's resigned. He's going to have to have an outstanding ST to make the team, but he's already a better player than Wise if he's fully healthy.
-
QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Oct 21, 2009 -> 04:16 PM) So my question is why would the Marlins give up on him and place him on waivers?? Because they have Maybin, Coghlan, Ross, Hermida, Stanton, Petersen, Miller and Cousins all penciled into their current and future lineups ahead of De Aza. And Maybin, Coghlan Petersen and Miller can all play CF.
