  1. QUOTE (shipps @ May 30, 2009 -> 02:21 PM) oh here we go...the liberal starts yappin...next thing you know water aint good for me... Well it isnt if you listen to the wackos who want you to believe the government is fluorinating (word?) the water to control population pretty soon.
  2. QUOTE (Texsox @ May 29, 2009 -> 05:26 PM) Really? The earlier poster said no one was stopping him from earning a living and forcing him to go to college. My moot point is, actually the NBA does force kids into at least one year of college. And a new point is, this highlights the cost of that policy. NO THEY DONT!!! I hate that people can't get over that "fact". THE NBA DOES NOT MAKE ANYONE GO TO COLLEGE! (see Jennings, Brandon) All the NBA does is require potential players (employees) to be either one year removed from HS or 19 years old. Just like any other job they have employment policies. OMG! Upon graduation of HS, players hoping one day to play in the NBA can either 1) Sit on their ass 2) Join AND1 3) Play in Europe 4) Play in Asia 5) Play in Australia 6) Play in South America 7) Play in the NBDL (i think) 8) Play in the USBL, CBA, ABA or any other professional league in the US or Canada 9) Go to college 10) Go to junior college 11) Go to a trade school 12) Join the military 13) Flip burgers at McDonald's ETC ETC ETC No one is making them go to college. The NBA isn't making them go to college. At the end of the day, they are still making that decision on their own, which is why Brandon Jennings, a projected top 10 pick this year DID NOT GO TO COLLEGE LAST YEAR.
  3. QUOTE (lostfan @ May 29, 2009 -> 06:23 PM) btw if Japan does change their minds and gets nukes, China would have a full-blown s***-fit and this would start an Asian arms race. I almost wonder if Japan should float around the idea that they may interested in aquiring nukes just to get China to force the issue a bit with North Korea.
  4. I don' t know how anyone could criticize this. Broadway was not going to do anything here and Corky Miller is not a major league hitter, even as a backup catcher. Castro can hit .250 and has serious power. He's also an above average defensive catcher and is an ideal MLB backup catcher. Also glad Whisler got a call up. I'm skeptical about whether he will have any success or not, as his peripherals in AAA are not good. But he has put up some good ERA numbers the past couple years and did earn a call up. I doubt he's any worse than Gobble.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 29, 2009 -> 04:38 PM) I would really like to hear how the NBA having hiring requirements is any different than any other job saying that you have to have a college degree or the like to work there. These kind of requirements happen all over life, I am not sure why it is evil when the NBA does, but OK when say a steel mill does it. Ding ding ding
  6. QUOTE (SoxAce @ May 29, 2009 -> 04:33 PM) Nice. I gotta say also I'd rather have a dumb kid with a high basketball IQ (Rose) than a smart kid with a low basketball IQ (Tyrus) and this comming from the ultimate Tyrus Thomas fan. And no Derrick Rose isn't dumb.. he is lazy, but not dumb. Very smart kid that just made a dumb decision... to trust his brother.. If he was smart he wouldnt have let someone else take the SAT for him...
  7. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 29, 2009 -> 04:12 PM) I dont like it. My initial reaction is that I agree whole heartedly. I am willing to keep an open mind about it, however. I guess it depends on the specifics of the plan. Is a VAT designed as a replacement of sorts for income tax? If it's in addition to an income tax for the sole reason (or main reason) only to fund a national healthcare system I would vehemently oppose it. I'm just very skeptical of an additional tax that would affect every good or service I ever bought. NYS taxes 8.25% on most goods and that sucks enough as is.
  8. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ May 29, 2009 -> 03:35 PM) And its not wrong what the NBA or NFL does? They get free development programs and prevent kids who have no business in college from making money. But you keep thinking you're perfect, I'm sure that goes over well. That's such bulls***. They don't prevent from making money at all. No one is forcing them to go to college. At the end of the day it is still their choice to attend. Plenty of other options out there for them.
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 29, 2009 -> 03:50 PM) Podsednik LF Ramirez SS Dye RF Thome DH Konerko 1B Pierzynski C Anderson CF Getz 2B Fields 3B Shocked.
  10. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 29, 2009 -> 12:31 PM) I can't stand watching people drink milk with incompatible foods. For instance my sister always has a tall glass of milk with her Chinese food. *gag* Just tell them milk was a bad choice QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ May 29, 2009 -> 12:44 PM) Once you go skim, you never go back. After a while you get used to the taste of skim and come to enjoy it. Agreed. I used to only drink 2% but after my mom switched us to skim growing up I've gotten so used to it that it's about all I drink now.
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 29, 2009 -> 01:51 PM) If looking at Wise's brief and highly aberrant 130 AB last year in Charlotte and comparing them to a full season is your measure, then Wise wins. But as I said, look at their careers, development, trends, etc. They all say that other than speed, Kroeger is the player with a far better chance of succeeding. 191 AB. Wise hit .250 in his brief time up here last year, Kroeger is currently hitting .250 so far this year in Charlotte. If Kroger got off to a start reminiscent of his 2008 season this year I'd be inclined to agree that we might have a late bloomer on our hands, but he didn't/hasn't. Instead, we have a AAAA (edit: he probably isnt't even a 4A player actually) player (Wise) and a player who has yet to prove they are an above average AAA player. Kroeger's lines at AAA 2004: .332/.376/.587/.963 2005: .261/.316/.422/.738 2006: .231/.270/.370/.640 2007: .263/.338/.474/.812 2009: .244/.319/.407/.726 So, to me, it is Kroeger's 2008 year that looks like it may be an aberration. I wish him well, if he were to succeed it would onlky help us and give us more options. But I just don't see it. ML teams also havent seen it as he hasnt gotten a call since his 2004 season. I know you tend to fall in love with these types of players (Cook, Torres) and there's nothing wrong with that. I just can not see any way that Josh Kroeger is currently a better option than Wise. That being said, if we're out of it in September I wouldn't mind seeing him called up to get a few games up, but right now he isn't the right call IMO
  12. QUOTE (TitoMB345 @ May 29, 2009 -> 01:37 PM) Oh really? Might wanna check those numbers. I edited it as you made this post. .307/.373/.514/.887 .319/.402/.565/.967
  13. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 29, 2009 -> 01:11 PM) We have ALOT of lefty bats on this team right now. Kroeger also bats lefty. Who else should it have been? Daryle Ward? (Lefty) Michael Restovich? Andy Phillips? (Not an OF)
  14. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 29, 2009 -> 01:07 PM) You asked and answered. Look at the numbers Wise and Kroeger have put up in their minor league careers, in their full seasons last year, and in spring training this year, and tell me you really think Wise is a better option for a backup OF. Kroeger's AAA stats last year in 430 at bats .307/.373/.514/.887 15 HR, 69 RBI 43 BB : 82 K 12 SB 3 CS Dewayne Wise's AAA stats last year in 191 at bats .319/.402/.565/.967 9 HR, 23 RBI (20 HR, 52 RBI if proportionalized to match Kroeger's ABs) 22 BB : 32 K (50 BB : 72 K if proportionalized to match Kroeger's ABs) 15 SB 7 CS (34 SB 16 CS if proportionalized to match Kroeger's ABs) (9SB 0CS in Chicago) Pretty similar seasons last year, plus Wise proved he was capable of handling MLB pitching. He didn't set the world on fire by any means, but as a temporary replacement for Quentin and to serve as an extra outfielder he's fine. Kroeger has zero history in the majors and has disappointed at Charlotte so far this year. Plus, Wise could be valuable as a PR and can adequately play all OF positions. Kroeger is best served in the corners and while not slow, he isnt an ideal PR candidate. I really fail to see where or why he is a better choice. Claiming Kroeger is a better option than Wise right now is a bit much.
  15. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 29, 2009 -> 01:03 PM) Source? Assuming its true... expected and stupid. How so? We don't have any other options down at AAA. And please don't say Kroeger.
  16. QUOTE (shipps @ May 29, 2009 -> 08:50 AM) Yoohoo is the only way to go. Fixed.
  17. QUOTE (Disco72 @ May 29, 2009 -> 10:20 AM) Sorry for being "that guy" that won't quite let this thread die. Equal apologies for being "that guy" that gets annoyed at the national media. Having said that, I read Dayn Perry's recent article on Trades That Need to Happen Now! and couldn't help but scratch my head at this statement: I know he's an excellent prospect (rated #32 by MLB.com and #30 by Baseball America), but one offensive player, straight up is better than 4 pitchers (including Poreda, ranked #63 by BA)? Really? This just seems like a completely moronic statement, above and beyond the usual idiocy of some of these national "our job is to make people mad and drive traffic to our sites" writers. Ya i saw a couple days ago and shook my head. That deal straight up is not better for the Padres at all. And I know i've said it before, but people will be disappointed in Fernando Martinez.
  18. When I think he'll get called up, is very different from when I want him to get called up. All signs point to him being up very soon, especially if Josh continues to struggle.
  19. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 28, 2009 -> 02:23 PM) Im just tired of the ridiculous rules instituted by the NCAA and NBA to create a farm system where players are entirely at risk for thousands of dollars in scholarships. Playing in the NBA is not a right, employment is not a right. But age discrimination is against the law, and unfortunately for the NBA and its players, it is seen as a "thug" league, so it is held to different standards than say, MLB, NHL and MLS (Adu played when he was like 14 professionally. (Changed because Adu was drafted at 14)) Some times I catch this show called "World's Deadliest Catch" you see 18 year olds going on ships in the Bering Strait to make a few thousand dollars. They are risking their lives, yet there is no rule that stops them from doing it. Yet basketball players at 18 cant enter the NBA draft? You can work at a gas station at 16. You can work at a restaurant at 16. But you can't be a stripper until you're 18. You can be a mayor at 18, you can't be a senator until 30 or president until 36. Guess what? Some things have age limits. Why are there "18 year olds going on ships in the Bering Strait to make a few thousand dollars"? Because they are willing to do so and their employers are willing to hire them. And why does it have to be 18? You can legally drop out of HS at 16 with parental consent so why shouldn't kids be allowed to enter the NBA Draft at 16 then? I love how you mention MLB, NHL and MLS and conveniently forget that the most popular sport in the country does the same thing as the NBA. Look, at the end of the day, professional basketball players play basketball as their job. Where they play has a rule stating that to be eligible to play in the league you must be 19 years old or one year removed from your HS graduation. The whole age discrimination argument is such bulls*** too. Say someone in a wheelchair wants to play but can't because they are in a wheelchair. Is that discrimination against the handicapped? Remember when that golfer wanted to use a cart and all the grief that caused? Or maybe we should look into filing lawsuits against the US government for age discrimination b/c they won't allow people under 30 to run for Senator? If kids graduate HS and don't want to go to college, no one is making them. The NBA isn't making them either.
  20. QUOTE (flavum @ May 28, 2009 -> 12:52 PM) Contreras implosion. Gave up 4 runs. There was blown call at 2B. Chambliss got thrown out. After Contreras gave up a 2-run homer, Andy Phillips went off on the ump. He was tossed. Despite that inning he pitched well. Struck out 6, only 4 hits and 2 walks. But important to note that 52 of his 78 pitches were strikes.
  21. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ May 28, 2009 -> 12:57 PM) Why should he have to travel to Europe to play? No one is saying he has to. He could go work at McDonald's if he wanted to. If he wanted to play basketball in the states he could play in the USBL, ABA, CBA etc... He has options. Playing basketball in the NBA is a privilege, not a right.
  22. Beckham doubles to right to follow up Lillisucks 3 run HR 1-3 now
  23. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 28, 2009 -> 11:20 AM) Charlotte: Lillicurse SS Beckham 3B Wise CF Restovich LF Ward 1B Phillips 2B Kroeger RF Castillo DH Lucy C murderers row right there. Well in all honesty, Charlotte isnt quite so pathetic anymore (at the moment, at least)
  24. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ May 27, 2009 -> 04:56 PM) Both of those statements are true. Eto'o played a brilliant game. He made Vidic and Carrick look silly. Turned them around and burned by them. Van der Sar could have made the save, but Eto'o rocketed it off his hand. Puyol had a couple good chances late to make it 3-0, but Van der Sar made some nice saves. I love watching Eto'o play. I really hope Cameroon can qualify for the 2010 WC. They have Togo and Morocco in their group tho so it's not gonna be easy.
  25. QUOTE (Nixon @ May 27, 2009 -> 04:59 PM) It's China's sphere of influence, let them deal with it. Yeah, that's the right policy...
