QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 21, 2009 -> 10:41 AM) I'm hearing four players. Poreda, Richard and Two Prospects. Gordon Beckham is not involved. From where?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 21, 2009 -> 09:58 AM) The name Poreda, Richard, Getz and Flowers have been floated around. I dont see Danks or Beckham being a PTBL in a deal like this for how much Peavy would cost us. I have a hard time believing Flowers would be traded too. We have absolutely no other catching prospects and AJ is getting up there in age. The guy i'm most worried about being included is Brandon Allen

QUOTE (DBAHO @ May 21, 2009 -> 09:42 AM) The last 2 I could live with. I'd say the Pads would want all of the good young pitching they could get with this deal. On their own I'd agree, but giving up one of them in combination with Richard and Poreda is a bit much IMO.

As long as the PTBNL's are not any of Beckham, Danks, Flowers, Allen, Viciedo, Carter or Hudson i'm completely fine with it.

I'm really worried about the rumored "PTBNL's"

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 20, 2009 -> 08:36 PM) Coming back to reality? These guys are going to be really, really good for us...but they need time. Danks was looking better and better in A ball and now they've promoted him and he has to work on the K's again. Beckham just came off the DL. They need time. They're going to be really really good, but they need time and people need to accept it. +1 -

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ May 20, 2009 -> 03:00 PM) There was a note on Viciedo but it wasn't performance related. http://soxmachine.com/blogs/soxmachine/default.aspx Are we sure about that? I thought they were on major league contracts. Aren't those specifically NOT what the contracts players sign after being drafted. I guess I thought they were in the same position as those Japanese players who often avoid arbitration. It is fantastic news if true though. -
QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ May 20, 2009 -> 12:38 PM) Top 5 cities where Americans are relocating: 1. Raleigh, N.C. 2. Austin, Texas 3. Charlotte, N.C. 4. Phoenix 5. Dallas What going on in NC? It's been that way with NC for a while now actually.

Danks now 1-2 with a double. FWIW He has struck out 11 of his first 36 at bats in AA, which is roughly 30% which means his BABIP is .440. I'm not knocking any of his potential but with that strikeout rate he really is going to need a lot more time.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 20, 2009 -> 10:44 AM) Last few years, I've read more non-fiction than fiction. Anyone else read any substantial amount of non-fiction, particularly history-related books? Yes, a lot. I just finished reading a book called "The Crusades: Islam and Christianity in the Struggle for World Supremacy" by Geoffrey Hindley and a couple months ago read "1066: The Hidden History in the Bayeux Tapestry". The one about the crusades was kinda hard reading. Didn't love Hindley's writing style as I felt I spent too much time trying to decipher what I just read rather than remembering what I just read (if that makes any sense). The one about the Bayeux tapestry was very interesting. It gives some background on it and also proposes an alternate theory for it's creation. I have a lot of historical non-fictions, the majority are of medieval Europe (mostly England) or ancient Egypt. I have not read the majority, I just have a bad habit of going into Barnes and Noble and leaving with two or three books every time I'm there. As for fiction, I just finished Steve Berry's "The Third Secret" last night. It was meh. It's one of his older ones. I generally like him and love his books with Cotton Malone as the protagonist. This book was pre-Cotton Malone and it took too long for me to get into it and it just wasn't as exciting IMO as his latest works.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 20, 2009 -> 08:53 AM) Cassel FINALLY looking like the pitcher I expected to see in Charlotte this year. Weird to see B-Ham lose. Also, I just noticed that West Tenn's firstbaseman is named "Prettyman". Awesome. Escobar still not doing anything with the bat - .558 OPS right now, and he's been their leadoff hitter in Kanny. I understand the guy is young and plays plus defense, but he has yet to do anything notable with the bat at all. Maybe he needs to go back down to rookie ball for another season, or repeat Kanny next year, to get his feet under him. Escobar just turned 20 in January. I'm fine with him playing the year out in Kanny. If he needs to repeat it next year for the year or just part of it so be it. But i'd say let him adjust there rather than go down to Rookie ball where he excelled already last year.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 19, 2009 -> 04:01 PM) Eider Torres, Keith Ginter, Restovich... mostly no one worth mentioning, except maybe Kroeger in the OF. You really have a man-crush on Kroeger don't you?

QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ May 19, 2009 -> 03:37 PM) KW being the selfish person he is waited this long to clarify him a bust. A real GM would lick their wounds and move on. What??? What else was he supposed to do? Lilli was only on the team because we've always had someone hurt all year long...

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 19, 2009 -> 03:58 PM) Would love to hear your ideas about where we're going to get two front-line starters between now and the start of the 2010 season? Contreras and Colon will be gone...Danks is looking (for now) like his late 2007 version before they shut him down and Floyd is abysmal. Let's say Floyd becomes a serviceable 5 starter and Danks a 3 starter and Buehrle doesn't ever show signs of wear and tear or go down with injury for the first time in his career...we still have to find a 1-2 starter and a 4. Richard or Poreda might be the 4. Might. The 4 can be found, but the 1-2 guy that Danks was the second half and Floyd for much of the first half...well, they just don't grow on trees. This is comical post. First off, why do we need to sign 2 "front-line starters"? Danks, MB and Floyd are being counted on to anchor our rotation for the next few years. Secondly, sine you do feel we need "front-line starters" (your words), I guess you're insinuating Bobby Jenks would be one, since that was who my comment was about. And if you are, that's just laughable. Danks has had 7 starts this year. S E V E N. In 4 of those starts, he has allowed 0 or 1 runs. In the other 3 he has been bad. Yet, you are already comparing him to John Danks version 2007. WOW. Then, despite Floyd's success last year, his pure stuff and what we know his potential is, you are already penciling him in as a serviceable number 5 starter if we're lucky. WOW. Then, you mention yourself that 1-2 starters don't grow on trees, but you ask me where we are going to be finding TWO of them before next year. Really? Really? -
QUOTE (lostfan @ May 19, 2009 -> 01:32 PM) s***ty (or maybe just overly ambitious) marketing + prohibitively expensive + limited exclusive lineup + bad economy = failure. I really thought Sony would be able to overcome it, but it's been going on years now, I don't know why they're still stalling. Maybe YOU don't regret it and I'd never fault you for that, but it's really not that simple. People won't just hop on board. I think another price drop has to happen. The exclusive lineup has gotten better over the past year; Ratchet & Clank, MLB The Show, SOCOM, Killzone, Infamous, LBP, MGS, Uncharted and soon MAG). I completely understand the initial flop as it was $200 more expensive and had pretty much no exclusives outside of Resistance. It has come a long ways though and just now are devs starting to harness the massive potential of the system. The PS3 flat out is capable of things that no other platform is. The price is still a bit pricey, but it's almost worth it for the Blu-Ray player alone. QUOTE (kapkomet @ May 19, 2009 -> 01:36 PM) Is the PS3 downward compatible (play PS2 or even PS1 games on a PS3)? Depends on what version you get. It should clearly be stated if you look though.

QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ May 19, 2009 -> 01:00 PM) The ps2 actually outsold the ps3 this last month, which is pretty ridiculous. They did design a great system just the price is too ridiculous for most people to pay, as soon as it drops 100 dollars it should move up the charts. Its down to $399. I dont get it. You are getting by far the most advanced and sophisticated gaming system, blu-ray player capabilities, internet search ability, PS store, music/video/picture storage etc...And, they are finally carrying some good exclusive series as well. Maybe it's the economy or X-Box fanboys refusing to make a switch or the Wii carving out a larger niche than expected, but I bought my PS3 when it was still $599 and I don't regret it for a second.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 19, 2009 -> 12:22 PM) No, I didn't say only reason, I said ONE reason. Another reason is that we don't have anyone at the AA level of above who has his stuff and he also has a history as a starter with the Angels. Poreda is our only minor league starter who's not at least 2-3 seasons away. Um he also has a history of injuries when he used to start, he has a metal rod in his elbow, he has established himself as an upper-echelon closer....so ya, it would be asinine to try and make him a starter again at this point in his career. The fact that we are think on close to ML ready starting pitchers in the minors, should not be a reason to be making ridiculous decisions like that. -

QUOTE (La Marr Hoyt HOF @ May 19, 2009 -> 10:02 AM) Not sure that communicating the skills that led you to a 9-yr career .260 avg and .320 OBP is all that helpful. Additionally, Donny Baseball did a pretty solid job with the Yankees and now for the Dodgers under Torre and he speaks even less than Hal Ever think it could possibly maybe just a little bit have to do with a limited natural ability? The basis of this argument, is entirely flawed.

I had two majors in college, one was in History with a focus on the Middle Ages, but it just amazes me what I think should be common knowledge and learned in middle school that people just don't seem to know. I didn't think that would be an "obscure" document
