I love that they're running out ground balls and making it close. there can be a millisecond difference between a good outcome and a bad outcome in baseball, minimize the probability of those bad outcomes by doing easy things like sprinting to first base

most players are probably less knowledgeable than a lot of fans about 'macro' sort of baseball things.

supposedly it'll storm for several hours. double header would be great, I could possibly go. I want that Italian heritage night hat...

Moncada doesn't beat that single out, does he? Just checked into this game after 'not' evacuating from a wildlfire in Scottsdale, AZ. I thought there was another poster around here. This game has lasted forever, glad I didn't get burned up and can see the end.

it's a good point because what made me think of this Mookie/Trout interview (see below) I watched last night. Definite humility on Trout's end but he thinks he's the best player on the field...which he is...but needed some coercion from Mookie to admit it. Personally I like Tim's attitude and ego, I think it's entertaining and honest, but it makes a lot less sense when he's playing like trash. For some reason, I'm reminded of this Orsen Welles quote describing Woody Allen: I think it's just truthful how he feels and the "aw shucks" guys are equally arrogant but play the media game in a way that baseball fans like. millions of people have decided to hang on these athletes' every word because they play with a ball on TV and make millions of dollars. I think I'd probably have a gigantic ego too but I'd keep it to myself...

but every baseball player thinks he's the best player in baseball. the mindset of competitive athletes is not exactly a rational one. I dunno why everyone cares about what this guy says so much, he sucks at baseball now and that's a more interesting topic of conversation as to why that might be.. I think it's weird that he's still talking about Donaldson though, and this puff piece is lazy journalism, reporters nowadays literally don't know how to write about anything besides race (they're usually white journalists). Probably because it's easy to do and doesn't require much in the way of research or investigation besides checking twitter, and will always have an audience (outrage and disagreement drives revenue all the same). and if you critique it, you must be a neo-nazi. the bit about TLR is interesting. Giolito apparently really liked him too. I guess Yermin Mercedes was the most influential voice on the team.

I read a rumor about Andrew McCutchen, that the Rangers are potentially interested in a trade for him if the deal includes a pitcher. Need pitching, why not Giolito and Graveman? https://theathletic.com/4629909/2023/06/26/rangers-prospects-trade-value/ This propaganda piece hyping up the Rangers farm was released today too (the guy works for the organization). Good thread, OP.

What is our organizational offensive philosophy?
nrockway replied to reiks12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
It seems like there's no consistent idea but I'd be wary about thinking the Giants or Reds are some organization to model. Reds are hot now and Elly might end up being the best infielder in the game, but it's basically just luck and paying a bunch of 16-year-old Dominicans $10,000 and hopefully one of them turns out. Same thing with the Rangers, I'm getting 2021 Sox vibes from them. We'll see. I still can't get over that quote from Robert along the lines of "I don't know what pitches the pitcher throws, just how hard he throws" and it really shows that everyone on the team is completely lost at the plate unless they're facing a pitcher they've gone up against 1000 times. There are good hitters on this team but are immediately at a disadvantage due to, what I assume, is a 'philosophy' that doesn't prioritize scouting MLB teams and relaying that information to the players. I think the offense improves dramatically if these guys could learn to take a pitch or have some trivial understanding of 'this guy is probably going to throw a slider out of the zone. don't swing at it'. -
nice play burger!

something tells me coaching is a factor, doesn't seem like a coincidence that 10 out of their top 13 position players have an OPS+ over 100.

fwiw, these are the hobby lobby evangelical bozos. do the sox have no shame in taking their money?

Just turned the game on, pleasantly surprised it's only a 2-0 deficit with Lynn on the mound.

LA Times assesses White Sox/Dodgers trade possibilities
nrockway replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
not the point of this thread, but what the hell does this team's hitting coach actually do? -
Yeah I legitimately can't see a path to a new ballpark unless the climate apocalypse happens and northern Illinois's population doubles. But a new park won't be an issue in JR's lifetime so it makes sense that they're not talking about it. His kid couldn't care less about baseball and the Bulls print money no matter how terribly they're run. I think when he dies, the Sox are sold off and suddenly the ballpark will become an issue for new ownership. The city won't kick in money for a new one unless the whole area can be profitably redeveloped (I think it could be. the YUPification east of that area is already in full swing) but there are likely far more desirable markets for a new owner. Pretty much the only hope is that Michael Reinsdorf actually feels some sense of loyalty to the city of Chicago and the fans that made his dad and him incredibly wealthy -- but that seems unlikely.
-
Jerry does this with the Bulls, 90% of the former roster is an ambassador or something. Wilbur Wood isn't dead yet, I bet he can teach Crochet how to throw a knuckleball
-
Once the ballpark is too old, does anyone see the White Sox staying in Chicago regardless of who owns the team? Nobody will want to pay for a stadium for a sport that no one cares about for a team that Chicago baseball fans care even less about. Do you envision the city kicking in any money? Or there being profit to be had for developers by building a 'ballpark district' on 35th street? What's happening to the A's will happen to the Sox, history be damned. Baseball team owners are also real estate developers and there's much more money to be had building condos and restaurants in Oakland than the south side of Chicago. Unfortunately the A's aren't the Giants and the Sox aren't the Cubs.

it would be an admission of failure by the front office and admitting to mistakes so they might be corrected is a huge no-no in any corporate environment.

who will be starting at 2b by the end of the season: remillard, wong or moncada?
