I posted it above. I wonder if the Sox just don’t like him for some reason. Seems like he still plays better defense than Pham per Fangraphs but there may be some other reason.

Neither team chose to call up Pham to their big league team to retain his services for their playoff run. Is this not true?

Ironically, many posters said he wasn’t a fit. But we just acquired the much older version.

It just seems like a bit questionable to add a 38 year old who is likely done. Also, while you chose to single out one team that chose not to retain Pham in the Mets who aren’t in contention, I did mention two other potential playoff teams in the Orioles and Phillies that dropped Pham like a bad habit.

Don’t try to use this kind of logic around these parts. Yes, Getz dumped three better outfielders to wind up with old man Pham for the playoff run. The same Pham that apparently wasn’t good enough for three other teams to retain this season in the Mets, Orioles, and Phillies. Last night’s broadcast provided the answer — Venable likely requested Pham’s acquisition because he liked him in 2022 when he was the hitting coach for Boston. He must have been impressed by the -0.3 bWAR that Pham put up for Boston in the second half of that season. The Castillo and Pham acquisitions appear to provide further proof that Getz thinks that he can strike gold for a few months to a year with aging players nearing retirement, similar to the old Kenny and Hahn strategy that usually failed.

Just heard this on the post-game show and there’s the answer. It was a request from Venable that Getz should have declined.

Getz could have just gotten him for free in the offseason when the Rockies non-tendered him. Then, they could have also had Adams pitching for them right now. Gotta love deadline moves that make your team worse.

Imagine making four trades at the deadline, none of which have worked out thus far, and then adding Tommy Pham? Getz must be trolling us at this point.

The Mets, Orioles, and Phillies all signed Pham to minors deals this season but not one team elected to keep him for the playoff run, even though the Orioles and Phillies are still in the playoff hunt. Only the Sox actually acquired Pham with intentions of using him in a playoff run. I didn’t see any other team names released that were mentioned to be interested in Doyle, but I guess it’s possible.

The Sox acquired both guys with seemingly no competition for their services from any other team. Pham is 38 years old and it’s been 2 years since he received a postseason at bat.

Yes, it would be stupid but that likely isn’t the case either. If Pham was DFA’ed, the cash considerations could be as low as $100K. But this appears to be a trade without a DFA involved so I believe the cash considerations could potentially be for as low as one single dollar. My guess is that he will play regardless.
