  1. QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 07:12 PM) who says he hasnt found a new biogenesis? i was thinking about that. when there is a need to find a way around drug test. someone will find a way. too much $$$$ not too. its like here in the south. for a way to get around the piss test or blood test, someone found a way around that. the local police busted a lot of places and crap load of people last month. mega money found.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 07:11 PM) The Reds would be stupid not to do a trade centered around Bruce and Quintana as the main parts. ok then let me ask you this, is it not reasonable to expect more from the Reds, or am i overvaluing Q??
  3. QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 07:01 PM) i'm not going to read 25 pages of mental masturbation to get to that point. i really hope you didn't take that the wrong way. i am not too good with the King's language. peace. sox in 2015

after thinking of this long and hard, i am coming to a conclusion that the sox may need to do this trade. but my problem is, unlike talking about the Mets, Dodgers or even any other team who need to do a salary dump, the Reds really don't have to. I mean, they are not in a urgency mode to do it. am i reading this the right way??

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 06:30 PM) I agree that trading Q is troublesome, I was just trying to find something that made some bit of sense based on bucket's preliminary info. If the Sox trade Q for a package involving Bruce or any other bat, I think it signals that the Sox believe that all the free agents we've been discussing (Cabrera, Rasmus, Sandoval, Laroche) are all way overpriced to the point that they are forced into this in order to improve the lineup. I still hope it doesn't happen, though getting both Bruce and Hamels would soften the blow a bit. good point i would like to add that the sox may think what is available really doesn't fit in the sox big picture
  6. QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 05:45 PM) While I think Alexei is a valuable asset to the sox(and not really that expensive), it would be foolish to not listen to offers. Especially if LAD offers mad cash in conjunction with a major leaguer. i think that is what the whole thread is about.
  7. QUOTE (shysocks @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 05:13 PM) Normally not one for rosterbating but here we go. Lineup: L Eaton S Melky (4 years, $60 million) R Abreu L Davis R Avisail L Gillaspie R Alexei R Flowers R Semien Bench: R Viciedo S Sanchez S Nieto L JorDanks L Shuck Rotation: L Sale L Quintana R McCarthy (3 years, $42 million) L Danks R Noesi Bullpen: R Petricka R Putnam L Duke R Guerra L Surkamp R Carroll That's a .500 team with room to get better, no? he will be on the IR most of that time. nah
  8. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 03:42 PM) Ahhh. But seriously, is Kevin Costner available? now that is funny ....

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 03:34 PM) On the free agent market right now Quintana would get a similar contract to where Lester is looking at, in the 7/$150 range or more. Your numbers are about 1/2 of what it would actually cost to replace him. most definitely i think the way the market is it more like 22-27 mil per

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 03:19 PM) I believe that there are talks happeninng. Bucket has always been a great source for inside info. I just hope that if a deal does happen, the Sox get back Bruce and a pitcher if they're going to give up Q. Jay Bruce fills a need - left-handed power-hitting outfielder. But you can't create another hole by sending off a cheap, very good left-handed pitcher unless you're filling Q's spot with another good pitcher under team control for a few years. with all due respect to Bucket, i was not inferring about him. the rest you wrote is right on.

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 03:14 PM) but if they're willing to take on payroll, I imagine you can find a "salary dump" type situation with another team and don't have to give up Q. With common trend here, intrigued by Bruce, but not for Q, unless Sox are going to make a crazy move for a SP. bingo
  13. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 02:49 PM) My understanding is that they're trying to position themselves to compete for many years. It will be interesting to see how rents comport with that...unless they are confident that they can get extensions without them hitting the open market (which I have seen only once, and that was Garcia who had an in house connection). i was thinking about that as well. they, the sox get a player who is 2 yr from FA's. they talk about an extension and offer a very good contract. the point is will he take it or not. now throw in the joker, let say he has a agent who would rather see client go to the open market. the sox loose. but in those 2 yrs, how did the team perform and then the sox can always give that player a QO.
  14. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 01:56 PM) Who said anything about Chris Davis? i think he did not realize someone was talking about Crash Davis from the movies.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 12:05 PM) I llike Jay Bruce and would love to see him on the Sox. But, unless the Sox get back another ML pitcher, I would very much dislike giving up Quintana. Q is a very good pitcher who is extremely cheap. He's more valuable than just Jay Bruce. as someone else said, i am very skeptical of this info. however, the sox will need to use someone |s| to get a trade done. a trade who can help the team get those missing pieces that the sox can't address thru FA's.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 10:39 AM) Don't worry. The White Sox will not trade Q for Bruce. Q is a more valuable player and is owed less money the next 5 years than Bruce the next 3. If you are trading Q, with his contract, if you are going to take on over $10 million a season in additional payroll, you don't do it on a player trendind downward like Bruce. This whole idea is silly. Q is a core piece. He is going nowhere unless blown away. Jay Bruce doesn't blow anyone away. I have seen it suggested the Reds include a guy like Latos. Why would the White Sox take on an additional $20+ million per year to downgrade their rotation and hope that Bruce bounces back? Q put up a 5.3 WAR in 2014 and will be paid $800k more than Zach Duke the next 3 years. if the Sox FO feels that something like this needs to be done, they will do it. pls don't get me wrong, I would hate this move as anybody. so many scenarios can happen, it is unnerving to just sit and wait.. edit... 17. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 06:49 AM) There is a possibility of an expensive splash with the budget I've heard however I don't think they are set on outbidding other teams. Tomas? Yoan? an A+ SP? ummm I wonder.
  18. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 06:01 AM) Some people in South Florida (and some people in my inbox) believe that Loria is setting up a future sale of the Marlins. Stanton's backloaded deal helps Loria and the Marlins make money in the immediate future. And starting next year, Loria could sell the team without having to give any of the profits back to the city of Miami and Miami-Dade County. Had he sold in 2009, for instance, 18 percent of the profits would have gone to the government. Some fans theorize that Loria could enjoy the cheaper years of Stanton, then sell the team before Stanton's opt-out date and not care about what happens to the Marlins and/or Stanton after that. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-leag...-180526965.html this make sense. I was wondering why Loria is spending money all of a sudden.
  19. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 03:32 AM) So please give us all your good judgement besidees Melky for DH ? Starting pitching? Relief pitching ? payroll ? International signings ? Compete year ? Give up draft choices ? Trade minor leaguers ? It's quite disheartening seeing every suggestion shot down "I wouldn't give so and so more than X dollars for X years blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda . Seems to me nothing would get resolved among our fine posters except say no to all FA 's because of PEDS , their daddy is a problem, too old , coming off a bad year , bad idea, coming off a good year , bad idea. You all have paralysis by analysis. Sorry Andy didn't aim this at you in particular but there are a lot of risks involved and you take your best shot based on past and upside and defense taking as much into consideration as possible and then it's "poor judgment" while 90% of the naysayers never have a plan of their own just some vague idea of how much the Sox have to spend and what everyone fairly deserves on the FA agent market. FA is like the draft. Its crap shoot and when it isn't you pay the highest amount and many years for the best players which turns that into an even bigger mess of a crapshoot. You pay the piper in one way or another eventually . whether you like it or not, those analysis as you said needs to be taken into account, in order to guide the org in making the right decision, because it is a crap shot. the org needs those answer to minimize the gamble and make the best informed decision.
  20. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 09:33 AM) I like the bullpen additions so far. Is Montas the closer of the future? I think the Sox brass is still hoping for Montas to be a SP. I also think Garcia needs at least 1 yr to recover from his injury and continue to develop in the minors. in his profiles and tools, he just may be the closer of the future. that is if all goes well.
  21. QUOTE (spiderman @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 12:34 AM) I'm not sure if this is a good move or not, but I like finding alternatives to paying decent players $15M a season. I have a bad feeling if we take that route, we're going to be stuck with players not worth their contracts and little/no flexibility. it all depends on the player the sox are picking. so far Hahn been made smart moves. it is how the sox look at the players. like an example, Cory Hart, is a 1b, dh (by default) and RF. last yr, 2014 he didn't hit too good. 2013, he was injured but all the yr before then was 270+ batting avg and nice hrs. well is he worth the gamble?? how bout salary?? it is on how people will look at it.
  22. you know as of today at this time, of all the players that has been DFA so far, I am thinking that sox may have wounded up with the best. just my opinion.
  23. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 12:16 AM) http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/11/pira...on-cabrera.html http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playe...amp;position=1B Ok, I know, he hasn't been "good." But, even though he's been replacement-level-ish when you factor in everything, he's only had one season where his bat was below average. He walks a lot and -- get this -- doesn't strike out a lot. His K rates have been around league average, and were actually below league average last year. He's basically been like Adam Dunn in terms of total production, but getting there with less power and MUCH fewer strikeouts, too. His not-so-good year last year was characterized by a really low BABIP, and he still managed a 108 wRC+. I don't know. The pro is that he'd basically be free, but the con is opportunity cost. If you got him, would you then give up on someone like LaRoche? Maybe not -- he's only going to cost like $4m or something, so you could theoretically acquire him and just DFA him if you land a bigger fish. This might be a better "insurance policy" than paying Viciedo the same salary. This would be a much cheaper alternative to an old DH, but his performance is obviously riskier. But if you think that the Sox really aren't ready to "push in" this year, it wouldn't be the worst idea in the world to play for some upside in 2015. I mean, you can argue that it should be easy to go and get a DH next year if the team is a piece or two away going into 2016. What do you think? Savvy or just "settling"? I think is a good move on 2 reason. 1. isn't there a rule that if someone claims a player then you can pull back the rest of the players? 2. the Pirates have some interesting names there. like Ramon Cabrera cat / dh and I believe 1b.
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 12:09 AM) Robin will do whatever he can to avoid having that happen, including hitting people like Gillaspie right behind Abreu. He made that very clear last year. I know, and that result was not too successful.
