QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 5, 2014 -> 11:57 AM) I'd like to see your breakdown on who you think gets what with those 4. Anderson can't stay healthy, Romo throws an 88 mph FB, LaRoche can't hit lefties and Rasmus defensive metrics are dropping, his K rate is rising and he himself has questioned his love of the game. On the plus side none of them had a career yr ( or even close to it ) so that is a sure signal to snatch them up early because of all the teams who love to sign trending downward free agents for megabucks but here is a problem with cherry picking a specific part of the advance stats. LaRoche has an for an avg of hitting, 270 hitting avg, 20 hrs a yr, 500 + at bats. remember I am not trying to compare his stats to anyone else, just responding to your answer.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 10:35 PM) I don't mean to imply that those things are negligible; I agree that they are important. I just think that too often we ASSUME they'll be in play when they may not. For example: we assume that every Cuban player will insist on being around the most other Cuban players. In reality, maybe just having one or two is enough, or maybe it helps for the first season but doesn't matter to a guy who has gotten his feet wet in the league, or maybe some of the guys know each other but don't particularly LIKE each other. Or in terms of mentorship/leadership: we assume that Victor will be a great leader, but who says we don't already have one on the team? I think it's really hard to predict which guys will get along with each other, and there's a decent chance that a new leader emerges from anywhere. So getting Victor isn't necessarily the choice between a leader or no leader. I just don't think it's safe to assume that the intangibles that a guy brings will make a significant difference. Intangibles, in general, always matter in the end, but they don't often appear and operate in predictable ways. I am coming very late to this party, so I will say this only Bravo. excellent post. on a side note dang, I wish I could write like this.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 07:02 PM) When the Sox signed Dunn all anyone could find was maybe 1 person who objected to it. Then there's how Dunn performed. So it's basically Dunnitis. The donkey kicked them and they're afraid to get anywhere close to it now. Also the Sox are a limited resources team so it's likely that VMart's AAV will be a record for a Sox player. Most would rather see the money spread out. $15-20M could buy 1 starting pitcher and 1 reliever potentially or some other combination of questionable talent. you are way off base with this bolded statement. just b/c some doesn't agree with you, don't assume its anything more than looking for other options. I for one is looking for the best move, not the move that throws excessive money around. yeah so this is JR's money, but its a team that I like to follow. there are holes that needs to be filled. so some don't agree with you, does that mean you need to act soooo superior and demeaning b/c you are the only one who thinks he has all the answers!

QUOTE (gosox41 @ Nov 5, 2014 -> 03:26 AM) Don't want him for $20MM Plus per year for at least 6 years. Let some other team sign him and then watch his numbers slide over the years as age and all the innings he has thrown catch up to him. The Sox can't afford this kind of albatross of a contract on their books when Lester is a #3 or 4 stater in a few years and declining. Bob some of what you are saying is true. look at the contract that the sox still has and some of which they just gotten rid of, let alone the contracts that they had to eat. Lester at 5+ yrs is too much and I say no. Lester at 3 with an option for 4 is perfect.

so the Hawks won and big. that it great and with a shut out. in the injury rpt, sharp has no rtn date. that means its bad. well like someone said, its Tevo time. I wonder which line they put him in? I wouldn't mind seeing Tevo with Kane and Toews, but then again, i am not the coach. i saw the Bickell didn't have his 5 hits he promise but he did have 2 assits. i guess with a win and 2 assists, that might be a fair trade off.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 11:22 PM) Again, he doesn't mind pitching as a starting pitcher and is perfectly fine with it and capable of doing it. He just prefers pitching out of the bullpen. You can like both prime rib and filet mignon, but perhaps you prefer prime rib. That's perfectly fine. I understand 100 %. if the sox can feel comfortable in putting him in as a sp, then the sox won't have to look for a sp in the fa market.

QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 11:47 PM) Non tendering Viciedo is crazy talk, not going to happen. Why? He's 25 years old right now and has hit 20+ HR's in 3 straight seasons. Now I'm not saying he should be given another year for us, but I refuse to believe that there isn't a team that would be willing to trade for him. I'm not even saying for a lot, but a young arm for the bullpen shouldn't be that hard to obtain in my opinion. I am not a fan of DV nor have I since the his first yr. but non tendering him would be a waste. he is still valuable and b/c of you reasons.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 11:46 PM) $100 million is probably pretty light. I am guessing when all is said and done we are talking about $150 at least. and then the wild card, when would it be too much money to spend on a pitcher ???

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 11:45 PM) Mid rotation is an area of need, but the Sox don't need another top of the rotation guy -oh, not that they couldn't use one, but the marginal benefit v. cost is smaller there for the Sox than at other positions. I would say a mid-level guy, but you have to give up the same draft choice that you do for the top end guy. Which leaves "roll your own". And they are making progress on that end. I am just assuming here so no offense. if you are 1 of those posters who will assume that Rodon will be great coming out of the gate. an unrealistic outlook. without Rodon the sox have 4 pitchers on the book with out Carroll.
-
I really like Lester esp if the sox could get him. he will be really good for 15+ wins a season. the sox could go 3 strong and if they make the playoff go with a top 3 sp that will be really tough. then the sox have Rodon developing and there won't be a urgency to have him be a successful right away, and I hate to say this, but if an injury happens to one of the other pitchers. Lester will become even more important. this will be for next yr. with Lester on the roster, 2016 with Danks coming off the books and other prospect developing. the starting 5 will be a feared group.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 11:00 PM) Nothing in this thread has, but I've gone from "it's ridiculous and preposterous" to "for the right price, it makes sense" over the course of the season. I don't think the Sox will end up with him but they'll definitely have interest. the sox does not need to go all in so to speak this season. a few reasonable smart moves even on the short term bases will do wonders. next yr fa's is looking nice. if the sox can get a 1 yr stop gap player who needs to rebuild his value. that will be even better. fill the holes that really need fixing.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 11:41 PM) From CSn in the foot injury article; The White Sox were impressed with the way Bassitt took the lessons he learned in his one month in the majors and applied them to the AFL. (Farm director Nick)Capra said Bassitt used all four of his pitches, including a changeup he learned to develop while with the White Sox. He also pitched inside more often and was more willing to pitch to both sides of the plate. “The experience he had in the big leagues taught this kid a lot,” Capra said. “It looks like he’s taking off with it.” 0.69 ERA and 22 K's , 3 walks in 13 innings in the AFL which we know can never be called a pitchers league. if only he wouldn't mind pitching as a starter. he really could help.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 09:34 PM) Guess the difference between our arguments is that I don't see VMart as the most risky by far. You mentioned Adam LaRoche as a possibility. He's 13 months younger than VMart but he's not very good against LH's. Of course he'd be cheaper and be able to play a better 1st base than Martinez in late innings and occasional starts. So he's essentially useless against LH's and his K's hurt you in those runner on 3rd and less than 2 out situations. Martinez has shown throughout his career that he is equally good against LH's and RH's . You also have the same arguments for rapid decline because of the similarities in age. Sure you can sign him for 1 or 2 less years probably but I'd rather have the guy who can be a bigger threat against all pitchers and in late innings when teams bring in a specialist. my problem stems from the number of yrs on the contract and salary demand per yr.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 09:36 PM) I don't think his performance is any riskier than LaRoche's, but when you factor cost, Victor is a riskier proposition. interesting point. dang, i didn't think about it.

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 09:22 PM) IMO, that was not at all on purpose. Shuck was trying to hurry up and get back over the wall to get the ball back into the infield because there was a runner on 1st base. Heck of a catch. I like his on base potential and seems to play a pretty good LF. i finally looked at the video. here is my thoughts. as he was climbing over the wall on his right side. his left foot appears to hit him. this was not the case. from the angle it made it look as such. it was the right foot, the trailing foot that got caught in the man shirt just above the stomach. when he tried to pull that foot, the right foot over, it was caught in the shirt. moving the shirt and making it appear as he kick him with his left.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 06:11 PM) I just want to clarify my vote in this poll. The question is "Do you want Victor Martinez?" My answer to that question is yes, assuming that we are defining "want" as "want Victor Martinez to play on the Chicago White Sox" and not "want Victor Martinez to send me a naked selfie." I absolutely want the former, I absolutely do not want the latter due to the bodily effects gravity plays on people. However, it's all cost dependent. I think Chicago White Sox mentioned 3/$48 as his limit; I agree with that. Really, anything much more than that on either end is getting too long and too expensive. This is a who has, for all intents and purposes, zero defensive value and he is getting older. Those types of players historically do not return a ton of value and are typically overpaid based on previous performances. ahem..... ahhh do you want to tell us something ????

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 06:30 PM) I think the big markets like Boston and the Dodgers are only in play for Hanley. But I would take him, his injury history does scare me a little bit. Just small nagging injuries he usually has. he will make a great dh. less injury risk.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 05:25 PM) I can see the Rockies using Cuddyer as insurance so that they can move CarGo this winter. He would make sense in the Sox taking back a large contract and improving the OF defense. The ability to have him DH some could keep him healthy. He gets expensive this season for the Rox as his salary jumps from $10.5M to $16M and they need the payroll space to grab at least one more quality SP. they, col will have some flexibility in payroll, according to cot's salary site. if col need more options, i would be able to help them of course for a price.

QUOTE (Dunt @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 04:55 PM) Im not going to worry about the defense so much right now, as it has been stated numerous times already, Anderson has only been playing baseball competitively for 5 years now. The defense will come in time, it will just require getting tons of reps. imho i believe his hitting, right now can take him up a level. it is his defense

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 05:35 PM) And he doesn't treat amateur signings and ML signings as a different budget. The money that could have (should have) been allocated to the system for years was instead being spent on the Juan Pierre's of the world in an attempt to race to .500 records. This organization was run really poorly in some of the years since 2005. that is not JR's doing, but the gm.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 05:32 PM) I am not only speaking about the LA market, as the Wilder thing obviously had an impact, but also of the draft in general. JR was one of the few owners who always seemed to really adhere to the recommended slots that MLB provided in the draft. JR has held the Sox pretty close to the letter of the law. i some what agree with you with ref to JR. I have always been a backer of him since before 2002. i defended him on this site as it seems forever. i am saying this as to show that i do not wear blinders about him. with the wilder incident, it appears to me that he needed to walk on thin paper, or else get accuse of friends with Bud and his influence. this did happened. the other part is as i said, KW reign. and their lack of knowledge in how to conduct a draft.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 05:35 AM) Kiley McDaniel's extension prospect list for the Sox should be coming out soon. He put the Cubs one out like 2 weeks ago and the Sox are on deck. when the sox comes out, is there a way I can asked If you post it. I just wouldn't know when it comes out. many thanks.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 3, 2014 -> 04:22 PM) The White Sox have released a whole slew of minor leaguers... RHPs Matt Abramson, Brandon Hardin, Jamie Patterson, David Putman, Juan Ramirez, Anthony Santiago, Charlie Sharrer, Kevin Vance LHPs Jose Bautista, Jeff McKenzie INFs Cody Yount, Dan Wagner, Grant Buckner OFs Patrick Palmeiro, Chevy Clarke, Michael Earley, Carl Thomore, Adam Heisler, Sam Macias Mostly not surprising. Abramson has a big live fastball and wasn't around long, thought they may have stuck with him a little longer. Putnam had a nice breaking ball. Vance has had some success over the years. Michael Earley performed reasonably well with the bat and was a good defender, thought they'd keep him around as a 4th OF in the higher levels. Hardin and Vance have even gotten votes in our T25 at points along the way, though neither was ever ranked. vance and putman are the surprises for me. too bad.

it doesn't matter if all the young players makes it. it only matters if a couple make it. remember if all the young players, whether obtain thru the draft or fa's make it, the system, all the org systems will be overflowing. that is not that case. in theory you get many pieces and hopefully a few will show promise. of those few then you hope for 1 or 2 or whatever comes along.
