yeah i read about that and i just threw off as bs. big frank is far from returning to play, no matter how fast he recovers. it may take him a full yr to return. i don't see the twins dishing out money like that, only if it was a revenge factor.

looking down the road, we are set with prospects at ss, but is there one for 2b and fields at 3b kind of scares me. we are set at 1b with what we have in paulie and thome. i feel comfortable with prospect at cat and the of. but i am looking at the pitching and what can develop in 2 or 3 yrs. we have bmac major league ready what is left???? i know we are looking at prospect and hoping for a break out yr. but in 3 yrs time we might loose garland, cont and herandez. we gain one in bmac. so we and i mean this as a way to explore the possiblitiy when it is there, need to make trades for pitching prospect when it is there. does that mean, jon garland is avail, or some of our prize minor league of'er ?

QUOTE(Randar68 @ Dec 2, 2005 -> 05:07 PM) Well, Rogo would be a liability in RF, IMO, but LF is feasible. He could fill that Gload-type role, but with Thome and Konerko, I think they likely need more guys along the lines of Ozuna who can play 3B, 2B, 1B, OF, and they definitely need a better back-up SS option than Ozuna. I don't see much of a role for Rogo with this team over the next 3 years, meaning he should probably be dealt if anyone becomes interested or as part of a deal to get help at the deadline if they need it. i for one was hoping that he, rogo would develop some power or become a better prospect for the sox. he seems as a really nice guy and i like him. maybe a trade will help him.

QUOTE(timotime @ Dec 3, 2005 -> 12:07 AM) yes if jon starts off like he did this yr, the sox will not move him and prob let him walk esp if we make the playoff again. however i think the sox will trade him quick after the season starts if he has a so-so beginning.

QUOTE(chitownsportsfan @ Dec 3, 2005 -> 01:03 AM) "The Sox want a new number 2 hitter, nobody said anything about you wanting one. That's why Pierre has been brought up so much cause the Sox want to move Iguchi down to make use of his power." Great, they want a new number 2 hitter, I'd like a BMW, but that isn't going to happen because it WOULD COST TOO MUCH. I'd have to sell my computer and the cheapo car I have now and god knows what else, and boy I can't even post on soxtalk anymore! Although some of you would like that, I'm not going to make it happen ;-) Similiary, just say no to Juan Pierre. He is a terrible freaking number 2 hitter, god, go get a number two hitter, but where the heck is he going to play? Juan Pierre plays CF obviously, the only position on the field open for the Sox. So if Juan comes in he is the new sparkly number 2 hitter? Great, a guy with worse stats than Gooch and Rowand comes in and hits number two. uhg, I'm going to to the bar to get even more beligerent, hopefully I have at least provoked some raw emotion in the cold winter. got to wait for the non tender contract day. i believe it is next week. i think there might some names on that list that will surprise some. some that will be intriguing.

thing is, i had faith that jr and co would pony up with the cash. my only concern was would paulie ask for too much and force the sox to look elsewhere or would he sign with laa for the same amount the sox were offering. either way, way to go kw for getting the job done quickly.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Nov 29, 2005 -> 03:31 PM) I have also heard that Pax loves Peja. I bet it is hard not to like a guy who can score as easy as Peja. I was just giving my opinion on him, I dont know any insider info. If the Bulls could get Nene, that would be fantastic. Although the guy has had some problems with the knees, when he is healthy he is quite a load in the paint. Although I wonder what would happen to the starting lineup should Nene come to the Bulls. Would Nocioni, Sweetney, or Chandler go to the bench? Personally I would say Chandler, but the Bulls arent going to pay Tyson starter money to be the 6th man. i hope you didn't think i was implying that you had info. i was just pointing out something that i didn't you knew.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Nov 29, 2005 -> 02:51 PM) I will admit I thought he was going to be the steal of the Curry trade, Just another reason why potential is such a dangerous word. Its really unfortunate that Thomas is such a pile of s***, because he actually has some game, and he could have really helped the Bulls with his size, athleticism and scoring ability. But he just wants to collect his $14 million dollar paycheck and exert minimal effort, so he has no place on the Chicago Bulls. I am fine with this though, because the Bulls still have Sweetney, and the Knicks number 1 draft picks for the next couple years. all the hype for him and he never pan out even in ny. so this is not a player who didn't like the coach or the team. it has to be something more. now do we let him stay at home and collect the money or what? ref to peja, i have read on several accounts that pax really like him in a bulls uni. so what gives??? i agree that we should look at center. i am sorry to say this, but i think chandler may be out of his element as a starter. who do you think is a good option. has nene developed yet to a player we can depend on?

QUOTE(TLAK @ Nov 29, 2005 -> 12:52 PM) They quote the Boston Globe who report that the Angels, Orioles and White Sox have all offered 5 year deals. ---First I've heard that the White Sox will go 5 years. I wonder what the hooks, buy outs and deferrals look like. I can't picture JR going that long without some type of escape clause. so the sox finally has put the money on the table. i hope it is true and i hope the money is fair and the sox trying to low ball him.

according to the trib the bull and thomas has split, yet the bulls will not release thomas from his contract. which is good. thomas is in last yr and that would open a huge opportunity to sign someone big in the offseason. question anyone have a link of next yr fa's?

here is the article By Mark Gonzales Tribune staff reporter November 29, 2005 In one of his first acts as a member of the White Sox, slugger Jim Thome placed a call over the weekend to free agent Paul Konerko to implore him to re-sign with the Sox. But that was just the latest in a series of developments that have accelerated the pursuit of the top slugger on the free-agent market. Rick Hahn, the Sox's assistant general manager, said at Monday's news conference that talks with Konerko's agent are "ongoing" but declined to elaborate on the nature of discussions. Meanwhile, Konerko has received four-year offers at around $50 million from both Baltimore and the Los Angeles Angels, according to reports in Tuesday's editions of the Baltimore Sun and Los Angeles Times. Konerko, 29, is scheduled to visit Angels officials later this week, the Times reported. The Orioles, albeit a long shot to land Konerko because of his preference to attend spring training in Arizona and to play for a playoff-contending team, are expected to raise their offer to five years and $60 million, the Sun reported. The Sox, and Thome, in particular, expressed a sense of urgency in retaining their slugger who hit .283 with 40 home runs and 100 RBIs during the season and had five homers and 15 RBIs in leading the Sox to their first World Series title in 88 years. "I put a call into him this weekend," Thome said at his news conference at U.S. Cellular Field. "We have not talked. For me, it's important. I've known Paulie a long time. ... For me, I wanted him to know from my end to come back, please. That's a big thing. "He's a great, great guy and would be a wonderful teammate. I want to be part of that with him. We'll connect, I'm sure. He's had a lot going on, and vice versa." The Sox are willing to expand last year's $75 million payroll to accommodate the re-signing of Konerko nd would like to resolve Konerko's status by the end of the annual winter meetings in Dallas on Dec. 8. "We've had ongoing good dialogue with Craig [Landis]," Hahn said of Konerko's agent. GM Ken Williams wasn't at Thome's news conference because of kidney stones, but he already has said the Sox will offer salary arbitration to Konerko on Dec. 7. Konerko, however, is likely to command a contract of at least four years and at least $50 million. Last January, the Sox stretched their player payroll to accommodate second baseman Tadahito Iguchi, who signed a two-year, $4.95 million contract. But the stakes are greater with Konerko. The Sox already have 14 players under contract for 2006 at a cash obligation at about $57.725 million. That doesn't include arbitration-eligible players Jon Garland, A.J. Pierzynski and Joe Crede. If the Sox can re-sign Konerko, it would give them some financial certainty. They also could attain more financial flexibility if they backload Konerko's contract. "We have irons in the fire, but Paul Konerko is the priority," Hahn stressed. If Konerko signs elsewhere, the Sox would pursue other options they've already discussed. One could be to move right fielder Jermaine Dye to first base, thereby opening an outfield spot for the speedy No. 2 hitter manager Ozzie Guillen prefers. The acquisition of Thome doesn't diminish the pursuit of a No. 2 hitter, Hahn said. "Jim's addition helps and addresses a very big need and priority for us," Hahn said. "That being said, there are some other things we'd like to do." If Konerko does not return, the Sox could put left-handed hitter Ross Gload at first base or acquire a first baseman through trade or free agency. Trading Aaron Rowand to Philadelphia as part of the Thome deal opens center field for 2003 No. 1 pick Brian Anderson, but that could change, especially if Konerko doesn't return. Switch-hitting outfielder Joe Borchard, the Sox's top pick in 2000, is out of options and his days with the organization appear numbered. Thome was given jersey No. 25, which was recently worn by Borchard. The Sox also are looking for a left-handed-hitting backup infielder as insurance at third base, given Crede's tender back. according to the trib several teams have finally offer money to paulie. it appears as angels reportedly offer 4/50 for 12 mil a yr and bal has offered 5/60 for 12 mil a yr as well. so now we know what the money is. thome has said

QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 06:56 PM) Let me give you a real answer, we got Thome. It was days until I noticed what he was going to cost the Sox. I wasn't interested in the least. I was interested in where he would hit, where he would field, and the fact he is a solid citizen in the club house. I don't care if he's making $5 mil or $10 mil. If the Astros made more money this season than the Red Sox would it or should it make a difference to any of the fans? When they start publishing the box scores in the financial section, I'll start caring. Until then, I'm not that interested, but now I can see why some fans are so fascinated by it all. Thank you for the education. Counting other people's money just doesn't do anything for me. fair enuf, i now know where you stand on this topic. i was not counting other peoples money but what is fair market value is versus finding other options.

my bad, i was referring about what he did in the minors after the draft. did he step up, did he produce as the scouts thought he would, was he overpowered in the minors. what i read about him is so what confusing.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 01:33 PM) Seriously, and maybe it's my age, I can't get excited over a player's contract. I just can't sit here and think wow, we got Thome for $7.2 mil now we can get Inspector Clouseau at $3.6 over 5 with incentives, with a player option at $4.8 and a team option in 2009 for $5.6 unless he averages 120 starts, then he gets $5.8 mil and with the money we save, we can order out for pizza. I'm more, where will he play, where in the batting order, what's he bring that we don't have and what hole did we just create. I don't know where the Sox budget should fall for player salaries, I don't know if they have a ton of fat in the front office that could be trimmed and an extra $3 mil moved to player salaries. I do know that worrying about the team overpaying for someone detracts from my enjoyment. OMG We overpaid $3 million here, the franchise is ruined, we will never reach the playoffs again. But with so many great Sox fans and knowledgeable baseball people here, I wanted to understand the fascination and the excitement of signing a guy to a "good contract". Is it the same as a win on the field? i am going to play devil advocate here, ok and please do not take offense. lets say it paulie and timo what is paulie worth and lets say we pay paulie, and for argument sake 16 mil. is this too much to pay. timo ok maybe he is not the best example so lets say juan and if he was a fa. would paying him let say 8 mil be too much? by your statement, we are overpaying b/c he play for us, is a vital part of our org and we only overpaid by a few mil.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 03:38 PM) Personally, I was pissed that he gave them Gio. Even though he is an injury risk, I felt like he was as close to a cant miss pitcher as we have. Then I thought about it a little more and figured out what KW's thoughts were. Trade some pitchers who might not pan out, get a player. Next year, draft a bunch of arms again, hope 2 of them lool decent, trade them for a big league player. We still have arms, RL, Broadway, both are good minor leaguers. what are your thoughts on broadway future?

QUOTE(JimH @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 04:00 PM) Well thanks for the opening there, nice intro ... They will bring in another bat who can serve as insurance for Crede's back. Frankly I expect them to wait until after the 12/20 non tender date. And I do not see them signing anybody as a FA until after the arbitration deadline, they do not want to give up draft choices. My guess is they have their eyes on three guys and are waiting to see how it plays out ... Bill Mueller, Ryan Freel, and Tony Graffanino. I think you will see 1 of those 3 on the 2006 White Sox. Juan Pierre, yes, I think they will get him. Strictly a guess on my part, not commenting on whether it's smart/good/bad/crazy/brilliant etc. Konerko ... I think they'll get a deal done with him but if they don't watch for them to make two moves to compensate. This is why they want a Konerko decision done quickly, i.e. before the arbitration deadline and the non tender date - so it gives them time and room to pursue other things in case Konerko bolts. Ok so this is stepping out on the ledge but that's what this time of year is for I also predict that if KW trades more prospects a few people on this board will really get bent out of shape and call him an idiot. jim, thanks for the info even if it is your opinion which in my is more insightful than mine. i do have to say some of you assessments bothers me, esp at the 3b option. i can swallow the thome trade, if we sign paulie and i know the reasons or the logic behind it, but i still don't like it. but is my thoughts. i would have preferred to get something more in return. crede back does concerns me and that is why i would love to see an option via fa to solve that problem but yeah 12/20 dateline may be another way to solve that problem.

QUOTE(JimH @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 04:04 PM) You are right, and that's why it's so difficult to judge prospects. I doubt there's anyone here who is as high on Sweeney as me, so again, I am biased about his potential because I see something really special there. He's battled some annoying injuries which have hampered his hitting and he still did really well for a 20 yr. old in AA. i love the kid's chances and would be very depress if he is traded. i like it when last yr he almost made the cut. i read all i could since the day he was drafted. so i been waiting to see what comes of it. i have had a feeling since the emergence of young, anderson was expendable and will likey get traded. however the rex and randar to name a few have more knowledge on the minors and i will give way to their opinion.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 05:39 AM) How does everybody know what the budget should be? I mean really know. I just can't fathom careing if a player makes an extra million. I understand it makes for a more interesting off season playing GM, but as a fan, I don't really care if JR makes 1 million or 10 million next season. i have said jr will go the distance and spend money if he need to, to put the winner on the team. bank on it.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 04:55 AM) Bill Veeck, White Sox owner during the South Side Hit Men and Rent a Player days. Thanks for asking. great job on the veeck, man i wish jr would do something special for the veeck family in the beginning of next season. he saved the sox for chi.

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 04:30 AM) How many owners are into MLB for making profits? and how many owners are in it just to lose money?
-
QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 04:28 AM) I think there is a difference between being a fan and being an owner. In almost every instance that a free agent signs, the winning team overpaid. It's just like an auction, the highest bidder, the person who values the item/player the most, wins. So over paying isn't really an issue. I am certain Philly shopped Thome. The Sox won. Why? Because the Sox offered more. So they paid more than anyone else was willing to pay. In this case they overpaid within a reasonable amount. I guess what is unreasonable is in the eyes of the beholder. Getting back to George. The more he throws away money, the more he makes. If you were a Yankee fan, would you be cheering for George to spend less and make more? Last I saw, the Yankees were #1 or #2 in profits, so how could anyone say they are over spending? i was talking purely on george and you make some very good points esp spending to make more and winning more series as the yanks under george won how many series??? so spending money at the right person and position, has always been my argument. rafael looks good now.

QUOTE(daa84 @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 04:13 AM) it would be a damn shame for that area to not have a baseball team ....since baseball has gone global and has such a strong latin presence i think a team could thrive there, but they need a stadium closer...but the fact of teh matter is that you gotta make money if you are a team and if they arent in florida then a move is necessary...i hope they can retain the marlins after the their first championship, they did a fire sale. can you imagine what that team would be like even when they won the second time around?
