  1. QUOTE(JDsDirtySox @ Jun 4, 2005 -> 07:57 PM) I heard Garland wants to fight AJ, cause AJ yelled BOO-YAH when Kevin Mench hit the blast off of him in Texas. That sucker teed off on that like he knew I was going to throw a fastball...
  2. Not the coolest thing to do.... Byrd knocks umpire to ground June 4, 2005 WASHINGTON (AP) -- Nationals outfielder Marlon Byrd knocked down umpire Joe Brinkman during an argument between innings of a game against the Florida Marlins on Saturday night. Byrd was called out on strikes to end the sixth when first-base umpire Bill Miller ruled that he went around on a checked swing with the count full. Byrd, thinking he had drawn a walk, was about halfway to first when he realized Miller had called him out. Byrd began arguing with the umpire, and first-base coach Don Buford stepped between them. But as the player went toward his spot in left field for the top of the seventh, he continued arguing, and Miller ejected him. Byrd then headed toward Miller, and second-base umpire Brinkman tried to get in the player's way. They collided, sending Brinkman tumbling to his back on the infield dirt. He was attended to by a Nationals trainer. ``I saw Byrd running toward my partner, Bill Miller. I put my arm out. I thought I could get in front,'' said Brinkman, who had a red scrape on the side of his forehead. ``I don't know what the intent was.'' Several Nationals players and manager Frank Robinson ran over toward Miller, and eventually Byrd walked off the field. ``Didn't you hear me?'' Byrd said after the game. ``I'm only talking about the victory.'' Wow, that Byrd is a class act.... :headshake

    Lyric Story Time

I close my eyes, only for a moment, and the moment's gone All my dreams, pass before my eyes, a curiosity Dust in the wind, all they are is dust in the wind. Same old song, just a drop of water in an endless sea All we do, crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind [Now] Don't hang on, nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky It slips away, and all your money won't another minute buy. Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind Dust in the wind, everything is dust in the wind.

    Radio Question

I just heard one of my stand-by (i.e. parent safe) radio stations in Chicago switched formats. Is it true that Oldies 104.3 is no longer and Oldies station? Lame thread I know, but just wanted some confirmation on the rumor....

  8. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 11:34 PM) You're spending too much time on the east coast Soxy. Can I offer you a pop to help return your normal midwestern drawl? Oh, believe me, I've still got the Chicagoan in me. I still say pop and my nasal, nasal, nasal a's will be with me until the day I die (and probably even past that). Even today someone made fun of my accent, jealous bastard.
  9. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 01:33 PM) While people tend to go dependent on calculators there is a lot of need for them in school. Idonno what math you were in but in Trig/Pre-Calc... some of the stuff is impossible without calculators. As for a clerk not being able to figure out the math... there is a reason he is a clerk isnt there? And there are a lot of anti-plagiurism sites teachers can use now that prevent most kids from cheating. A course some get by without being caught but Id say when its on an important paper 70% of the time or more the student will be caught depending on how much he plaigurised. And if caught they get dropped from the class which is a pretty big deal. I think that at higher levels (AP classes, higher level college classes) the pressure is higher so a lot of students do end up cheating. When you feel like you have to get an A to get into a good school, a good job, whatever, there's so much more pressure. And a lot of really good students will cheat. Anything for that extra edge. It's pathetic, and they aren't doing themselves any favors in the long run. I graduated from college with 2 kids that got kickedout of phi beta kappa for cheating. So, these weren't stupid people. A lot of students also take advantage of the fact that teachers and ta's are overworked. When you're just one of at least 200 students it's probably pretty easy to think you'll get away with cheating. I once TA'd for a college intro psych class. I had to read 120 papers. I knew some of them were plagiarized, but I didn't have the time to track down all of them. So, you bust a couple of students and hope they will serve as examples to the rest of the students. Unfortunately, getting caught is pretty rare and a lot of students find it easier to cheat instead of taking advantage of the educational opportunities afforded to them. But you're totally right about upper level math stuff. Some of it would be really hard and time consuming without calculators. Some of it, though, I think you have to do by hand to understand the stuff behind it. Even if you only do it once.
  10. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 01:06 PM) What did kids do before the Internet? I don't even remember. I vaguely remember going to the library. And having to use *ick* the paper card catalogue. I'll never forget in my advanced algebra class in high school my teacher asked a kid in class what's 2 x -2. The student replied 0. When he said no she reached for the calculator. I think that pretty much sums it up. Why learn when something else can do it for us.
  11. I just dusted off my copy of Under the Pink by Tori Amos. I'm a big Tori fan--but Little Earthquakes has always been my favorite. Until I re-listened to this disc I had forgotten how good, thoughtful and well composed it is. Just wanted to share my rediscovery.

  13. Trib article Children's Tylenol Recalled Over Labels By Associated Press Published June 3, 2005, 10:49 AM CDT FORT WASHINGTON, Pa. -- McNeil Consumer & Specialty Pharmaceuticals, a unit of health care products company Johnson & Johnson Inc., is recalling certain lots of Children's Tylenol because of confusing packaging that could result in overdosing. The company said Friday it is recalling all lots and all flavors of 80 milligram-strength Children's Tylenol Meltaways packaged in bottles and blisters, 80 milligram-strength Children's Tylenol SoftChews packaged in blisters, and 160 milligram-strength Jr. Tylenol Meltaways packaged in blisters. The recall affects only SoftChews and Meltaways versions of the product. Taking more than the prescribed dosage of acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol, may cause liver damage when taken for three or more days. In 80 milligram-strength products, the recall was triggered by concerns that blister packs containing two pills in each compartment would lead some consumers to believe that the two tablets contained a total of 80 milligrams of acetaminophen, when each tablet contains 80 milligrams. McNeil spokeswoman Kathy Fallon said in an interview that the company eliminated the double-pill blister cavity design for a single pill cavity design in the first quarter. As for bottled products and the 160 milligram-strength product, the company said that labeling on the front panel of the carton could confuse consumers on proper dosages. The spokeswoman said that McNeil was changing wording on the front of the package to say that each "tablet" contains the given strength of acetaminophen rather than each "dose." Fallon said the company was alerted to the possible confusion after receiving calls from consumers concerning proper dosing. She said she didn't know how many units were affected by the recall, or how long it would take to complete. She said the company had no reports of adverse events related to dosing. Fallon said the company has notified the Food and Drug Administration of the voluntary recall and that it will launch a campaign to alert consumers about proper dosages. Johnson & Johnson shares fell 32 cents to $66.68 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
