This is the White Sox we are talking about whose biggest contract ever handed out was $68 million over six years. They are going to double that amount to give to Justin Upton? That just is not the White Sox.

The 40-man, Rule 5, and roster decisions
maggsmaggs replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (oldsox @ Nov 21, 2015 -> 08:01 AM) Doesn't he have another year left before he is Rule 5 eligible? Yea, he does. He is the same boat as Hawkins (2012 HS draftee), and Hawkins is certainly not on the 40-man roster or eligible for the Rule 5 Draft. -
QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Nov 4, 2015 -> 11:39 PM) I am not saying he's not a criminal it's just the outrage at this point does nothing. He's definitely a criminal. He stole from a local non-profit (I am assuming the Explorer's program was one).

Would love to make him a reliever, and hopefully that is the plan. He had a great fastball and curve, which is all you need to be a reliever. Maybe he could be our Wade Davis, a former top prospect who stunk as a starter and found his groove in the pen.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 25, 2015 -> 06:32 PM) I'll second Will, having spoken to Adam, talked to his coaches, and helped him write a guest article for FS last year (he wrote about playing Aussie ball). Also, they wouldn't have sent him to Australia to represent the team like that if he didn't have good makeup. Well that is a bit of an overstatement. I think the lower levels are looking pretty darn good, but the upper levels (AA, AAA) are still not great and there is a lack of elite talent. System is improving, but mostly in quantity of "could be interesting" guys as opposed to a few "elite" guys. Yea, that's the problem. The system has a lot of guys who have the ceiling of an average major league player, but lack impact players. We have one guy who you can legitimately say has a chance to be an all-star position player (Anderson) and while his ceiling is certainly very high, he is also super risky. Pitching wise, we have solid arms (like usual). I would say in the pitching department, we are easily a top-10 system. Hitting wise, we are bottom 10, maybe bottom 5.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Oct 20, 2015 -> 06:36 AM) Because the opposite has done us so well in that regard? Experienced legislators simply gain the experience on how to insert sneaky wording and other "pork" into the law without anyone noticing. Maybe the term limits can be longer, but I wouldn't mind term limits imposed on them. I agree with both of you. Madigan is a great example in Illinois. Too much time in office and too much power. But look at Rauner (granted, not a member of the legislature), he has no political experience and totally bunked his line-item veto power by not utilizing it. You need a happy medium with term limits. Something like 12-16 years.

I am surprised the Sox would be willing to hire someone like Alomar as bench coach. He paid his dues as an organizational coach before joining a Major League staff for the past few years. I was really hoping we would hire a guy straight from coaching high school baseball to an important position.
-
If the Sox organization was in any way competent, I wouldn't care about the Cubs success. But since our franchise has been terrible for the last few years with no end of futility in sight, I am resigned to rooting against the Cubs. This sucks.

QUOTE (shipps @ Oct 12, 2015 -> 04:32 PM) Is there more league wide injuries now then say 5 years ago? Is it because defenders are hitting in different areas then previously? There seems like there are far more injuries now that guys are striking the offensive players lower and more with their arms and not the shoulders. There are definitely more games missed because of head-related injuries than five years ago with the League's new concussion protocols. As far as other injuries, who knows? I am sure there is a study out there.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 12, 2015 -> 09:31 AM) So you see no detriment to picking 15th versus 5th? That's my argument here. Winning isn't a good thing. Playing well and developing is a good thing, but winning games is not. Draft position is so overrated, imo. If you have great scouting, it does not matter where you pick because you will find talent all over, at every position. Even at QB, the hardest position to fill, there are just as many top flight QBs who were not drafted in the top half of the first round than where drafted in the top half of the first round. At the end of the today, it comes down to scouting and developing. The Packers do it the best and never draft high. Ditto with the Patriots. The Ravens/Steelers.

In Defense of Jay Cutler
maggsmaggs replied to Middle Buffalo's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Sep 28, 2015 -> 03:29 PM) The thing is, if you're rebuilding the Bears, Cutler makes the quarterback position a lower priority than the rest of the team. Cutler is a decent NFL QB, but he will be 33 years old entering 2016. The Bears are bereft of talent at almost every level of this team notwithstanding WR, RB and TE. Our RB probably won't be re-signed, so that goes from a strength to an unknown, but it is not a high priority NFL position. I think the Bears rebuilding process is at least three years after this year, simply because the roster is so thin. It will take a while for the team to bring in good players. I just don't think we can afford to not make QB a priority unless we want to put our eggs in a mid-30s Jay Cutler. -
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Sep 26, 2015 -> 12:30 PM) Yeah, if he doesn't become celibate for the rest of his life he is just BEGGING to be called a rapist... Exactly, this is what I do not get. If he is guilty, then he is 100% in the wrong and should be in jail. If he is completely innocent, then what exactly did he do wrong? He met a girl at a bar and took her home - something done nightly by thousands of people between the ages of 20 and 30 in every major city in this country. I am not trying to say he is guilty or innocent, I have not made an opinion on that and will not. But either he did nothing wrong or he did everything wrong.

QUOTE (soxfan49 @ Sep 25, 2015 -> 07:37 PM) Let's not forget he also made racial jokes at Wisconsin. But hey he should get the benefit of the doubt here! Making insensitive jokes and having sex with someone against their will are completely incomparable. He gets the benefit of the doubt because in our society you are innocent until proven guilty, not the other way around.

plus the lack of his DNA below her waist (if that report is true) pretty much means there is no case. It's the accuser's word versus Kane with no physical evidence confirming the allegation of penetration.
-
QUOTE (soxfan49 @ Sep 23, 2015 -> 06:51 AM) Any chance this PC is to announce charges are being dropped? The presser today is from the accuser's attorney, it has nothing to do with the DA's investigation. Also, no charges have even been filed yet by the DA's office, so there is nothing to drop.

As a social liberal, fiscal conservative, it is really hard to find an ideal candidate. But I like Kasich, he embodies the fiscal conservatism I desire and he seems pretty well grounded on social issues. For example, in regard to SCOTUS's same-sex marriage ruling, he basically, the court has spoken, let's move on. He also was able to work with the unions in Ohio because he understood and accepted the popular support for them. He is the one candidate, on either side that I feel can best bridge the divide between the two parties that is completely stunting any legislative progress.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Sep 20, 2015 -> 03:17 PM) Just goes to show you how bad we are without Jay. I'm curious what the tape indicates on that pick. People covering Bears were indicating Bennett was supposed to stop and the pick was on Marty. Looked like Marty was settling in and then he all of a sudden took off on a curl (not sure what the route was). Either way, if we have learned one thing this week...our secondary f***ing blows (and I am not learning that this week...I've been saying it all along) and Claussen is terrible. Either way, this year is all about getting the top pick and Connor Cook. Ill take Goff from Cal, but this team needs to find its future QB

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 20, 2015 -> 02:13 PM) Fuller is just a whipping boy. Goddamn One pick away from having a true building block on defense in Donald. That will sting for awhile.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 13, 2015 -> 11:17 AM) Nice .475 BABIP. He's obviously not going to keep this up offensively, but he has shown exactly what he needs to: power, patience and good defense. Once the league figures him out, his Ks will probably increase. That coupled with a regression in his BABIP, his batting average will definitely come down. But Trayce has made the roster for next year for sure. Now the problem is where does he fit. Is he a starting OF for you? Or your fourth outfielder? If the Sox want to figure this out, he better play every day. But of course, he won't.

QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 9, 2015 -> 04:05 PM) Alshon will never be healthy to where he plays 16 games in a season. Just doesn't seem like it'll happen. Except for the last two seasons where he has played in all 16 games.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 8, 2015 -> 01:33 PM) If the victim changes their testimony or declines to testify after reaching a large enough settlement, could that be a legal reason why a grand jury would be dismissed? Nothing was dismissed, the grand jury was merely postponed, which may indicate many things. As likely as it could be because the alleged victim has recanted or admitted lying to police, it is just as likely new evidence has been uncovered, which the prosecution would like to review before having the friend testify before the grand jury. Additionally, you cannot (to my knowledge) refuse to testify under grand jury subpoena without being held in contempt.
-
Let's remember, though, that "settlement" occurs only within the context of civil litigation. A grand jury subpoena is part of criminal litigation. I am not sure the two are related. The police and State's Attorney's Office work toward a criminal prosecution entirely independent of whatever civil litigation is ongoing. The postponing of the grand jury could mean exculpatory evidence was uncovered that renders a prosecution meritless. While it certainly could mean the victim has recanted or admitted to lying, which would destroy the State's case, there are a lot of potential reasons in play.

QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 2, 2015 -> 06:35 AM) Thought I'd wake up to see news but nope. If figure they'd say something if they had an accurate description. They could be hiding in plain site. The cops are likely waiting on DNA evidence from the bullet inside the officer and other possible DNA evidence. Since this seems to be a spur-of-the-moment crime, you have to figure the bullet will have DNA on it. And if the shooter has been convicted of a previous crime, they may have his DNA in a police database. But everything I heard is just a generic description of two white suspects and one black suspect.

Tim Jennings released. Extremely surprised. Even though he has struggled this preseason, with the terrible depth in the secondary, I cannot believe he got cut.

QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Aug 27, 2015 -> 07:34 PM) Or, you know, he could have been stupid for sexually assaulting a woman while under the influence of alcohol. Rock was just responding to the argument that Kane was stupid even if he was complete innocent. He is clearly not condoning Kane's behavior if indeed he raped the woman.
