  1. Spending $20 million per year for a guy whose stuff has been declining the past couple of years would be a big mistake.
  2. QUOTE (oldsox @ Aug 1, 2015 -> 09:06 AM) Matt Cooper did it again for Kanny. He had a great July: 12 innings, 6 hits, 23 K's. Even though I think he will flame out, he clearly has shown to be too good for Low-A. Move him up and see if he keeps it going.
  3. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 11:07 AM) I completely disagree with this right now. Shark is now the best pitcher on the market and the Angels, Yankees, and Dodgers are all sitting their needing pitching. I realize the Dodgers got Latos but what they want is a guy that can help the front of the rotation and the Giants just got Leake. Giants would probably still be interested as well and apparently Houston is still looking to buy too. Cubs have to be desperate for pitching as well (if they are going to give this thing a shot). Well the two teams most interested in Shark were Toronto and SF, and both have gotten rotation help. I don't think after giving up Mella for Leake, the Giants will depart with more porpsects for a pitcher. Maybe I'm wrong.
  4. QUOTE (shipps @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 10:59 AM) Trade Samardzija. You will be glad you did it later or regret not doing it if you hold onto him. Unfortunately by waiting, we may have missed our chance to add meaningful prospects. Most teams that needed a rotation arm have already obtained one.
  5. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 06:58 PM) Depends on the two prospects. I am assuming for any major acquisition, we will lose at least one of Montas/Anderson/Johnson & Johnson/Adams.
  6. I also should add that I hope you opened an IRA.
  7. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 06:51 PM) I got a feeling we're going to end up with Upton. Just a hunch. I unfortunately think we will make a big move, but I am not excited about giving up two of our top 15 prospects for a rental. Especially when the Sox are essentially saying this 7-game stretch is more indicative of the real 2015 White Sox than the prior 92-game stretch.
  8. QUOTE (SCCWS @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 06:51 PM) But it looks like more rain could be coming from the west. Meteorologist Harrelson told me the rain should stop after the initial passthrough that caused the delay. I don't know what to believe now.
  9. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 06:49 PM) 3-2 Blue Jays in the bottom of the 2nd. You know things are going your way when Dioner Navarro homers. We have less losses, so we control our own destiny.
  10. QUOTE (Whitewashed in '05 @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 08:12 PM) I thought there was a finance thread somewhere, anyway... I've just opened my first brokerage account. I'm doing a lot of reading and taking down notes on how I should start investing. Probably the most common advice is to diversify the portfolio. I've seen formulas with percentages for balancing between equities and fixed income to have a diversified portfolio depending on how aggressive one wants to be. I've also found questionnaires once answered that recommend the percentages of the equities to purchase. What do you veteran investors think of my approach so far? Am I going down the right path? You're young, fixed income (like dividends) are not as important for you. Don't buy bonds now, they are terrible. Inflation is higher than most bond interest rates. But instead of focusing on fixed income, you should focus on growth. Index funds are generally good for young people with limited investing experience. Depending on the fund, the expenses should be low and you in theory own a piece of a lot, which is the diversification you want.
  11. QUOTE (Dizzy Sox @ Jul 26, 2015 -> 10:38 PM) Eddie Alvarez is quickly becoming my favorite prospect in the system, being the only person in the whole organization with any plate discipline: 75 w in 94 games, incl. 6 in his 1st 5 at W-S. I know his age is working against him big time, but I am really pulling for him. The dude gets on base. While his age does somewhat weigh against him in physical maturity, he has less baseball experience than the ones he is playing against. I like him a ton, too.
  12. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 25, 2015 -> 06:05 PM) They had a DH that day and needed a spot starter. Thank you.
  13. Did I miss something? Why did Adams get promoted to Winston-Salem and is now back in Kanny?
  14. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jul 24, 2015 -> 09:31 PM) Big time stats. I hope he gets a month at the next level. I've been burned one too many times in my youth about dominant White Sox minor league relievers to believe Cooper will ever amount to anything (Edwin Almonte, David Sanders, Arnie Munoz, etc.).
  15. Very happy to see Micah's development in AAA after being sent down. I really cannot take anymore Carlos Sanchez. He's a great little fielder but he just doesn't have the bat speed to be an everyday player. He has a .214 wOBA which, if he had enough PAs, would be the worst among MLB players. He also had the fifth worst percentage of hard hit balls according to Fangraphs.
  16. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 19, 2015 -> 06:31 PM) How do all the Hahn fans know he is capable of making the correct moves? This past offseason, all he got was praise, and when those moves didn't work out, it is all KW. If Hahn has been KW's assistant for 10 years before becoming his alleged puppet, what is there to suggest he actually know what he is doing? I guess what I don't understsnd is The notion that KW and JR have no clue, but for some reason their underling, the guy with ZERO baseball expereince before being trained by them has this vision of excellence that needs to ne followed. My point is if you think JR and KW are beyonf their expiration date, tthere is no logical reason you should not think the same of Hahn. Hahn was on The Score on Friday and said KW was his boss, which is true. However, the way he talked about their relationship insinuated, to me at least, that KW has a lot more say in building the ballclub than we were led to believe when each received new titles. The moves definitely have looked bad this year, but I think KW is still way too involved in building the ballclub. Hahn is a sabermetric guy who I assume understands the need to building from within for cost reasons. But in the end, I suppose we are all hoping Hahn is more like Theo Epstein than AJ Preller. The jury is still out.
  17. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 19, 2015 -> 07:07 PM) I just wish he hit with more power this year. Although I am still skeptical of his long-term future as a SS, he seems to have made some significant strides defensively this year even if offensively the same cannot be said. 2014: 81 games, 679.2 innings, 379 chances, 34 errors (.910 FLD%) and 43 DPs. 2015: 84 games, 727.0 innings, 397 chances, 17 errors (.957 FLD%) and 65 DPs.
  18. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 19, 2015 -> 09:47 AM) Hope he ends up as a starter. Sale/Q/Rodon/Fulmer/Johnson or Montas or Beck or FA is a great rotation. Plus I like Robertson as closer. I really think Montas ends up as our 8th inning while Robertson is here.
  19. From some guy on MinorLeagueBall.com (Sickels' website): http://www.minorleagueball.com/2015/7/19/8...rday-in-the-azl Granted it's one inning, and the divisive issue was whether he was a closer or starter, so looking filthy for one inning should not be surprising. But always good to get off to a good start.
  20. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 02:52 PM) How about they just hire a professional broadcaster as the TV PBP guy? And then leave Stone next to him. It doesn't have to be an ex-player. Get a professional from somewhere. Someone doing post game work somewhere like a Wayne Randazzo or Mike Wills type. Yes. Please no retreads (Wimpy) and please no ex-ballplayers just because they wore a Sox jersey (Thomas or Rowand).
  21. I have a hard time believing this is Brooks Boyer's decision.
  22. QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 15, 2015 -> 06:55 AM) I honestly don't believe that the Sox minor league hitting instructors could ever make Gallo a hitter with a better batting eye. I think if you have Gallo, you just know you are going to live with a three-outcome player. I don't think any team will change his huge K numbers. Kris Bryant is the same way. Lots of Ks, lots of BBs and lots of HRs.
  23. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 13, 2015 -> 01:26 PM) Reminds me of when I first started following the minors as a kid and thought Ruddy Yan was going to be the next Rickey Henderson. This. This is when I was so naive about prospects and took everything that Phil Rogers said about them in the BA Prospect Guide to be the gospel. That 80 stolen base season was something though he did nothing else.
  24. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 8, 2015 -> 03:36 PM) I don't believe you can. I'm not a lawyer but from what I recall from my business law class, certain agreements can be verbal and binding in a court of law and I remember something about a dollar threshold and year threshold (also things like real estate, IIRC, had to no matter what be in writing). I thought no verbal agreement in excess of 1 year can be binding. I also presume that the offered contract far exceeds any threshold on $'s. So bottom line, even if Mark wanted to say it was a verbal agreement, the actual agreement would be completely illegal and unenforceable. Note: I'll let one of our attorney's blow my argument up but I think generally speaking I'm correct. The problem is that regardless of contract law, the NBA and its collective-bargaining agreement supersedes contract law on the given point by inserting language that oral contracts are not binding. Regardless, you cannot obtain specific performance (force a player to perform a certain act, i.e. DJ sign with Dallas) on a personal service contract.
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 7, 2015 -> 11:48 AM) EDIT: 2015 draftees are not on there. From the chat:
