QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 24, 2013 -> 04:53 PM) Scott Merkin @scottmerkin 33m No specifics on Keppinger shoulder surgery--more an exploratory procedure to find the cause of the pain Same surgery as Flowers. Recovery will be 2-6 months depending on what they find out what is wrong.

QUOTE (SpainSOXfan09 @ Sep 17, 2013 -> 02:04 PM) Just to temper the mood on Abreu Jerry Crasnick (ESPN) has a nice article up detailing his shortcomings and basically giving us a buyer beware summary. The talent evaluators mostly agree that Abreu has legit power if he can harness it but will be challenged by fastballs in tight and breaking balls at te MLB level. The article says he has no value as a base clogger and may be a bit heavy but at thend it is pointed out he has trimmed down a bit. They try to guess his contract value and mention something like a 4 year 40 million contract. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/page/onenat...se-dariel-abreu It doesn't mention the Sox as a potential team to match him up with but maybe that is a good thing.

I still don't understand why he gets lumped into the super utility player category. He is young and thus age-appropriate for his league. And he put up terrific numbers. Not to mention he was a sixth round pick, so it's not like he just he didn't have talent. Seems to be the White Sox curse. -
Just had the exact same surgery on my right shoulder. I had a subacromial decompression and all the doctor needed to do was shave the bone and clean up the fraying. If there is no tear, he will be fine in no time. However, if there is a significant tear and he needs sutures put in place, he will be out the longer-range.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 30, 2013 -> 02:42 PM) Since the practice squad has a size of 8, I'm guessing 8. They are gonna sign a QB to the Psquad, so at the very most it will 7.

5th pick in a 10-team league: Starters QB = Luck RB = Martin RB = Morris WR = Bryant WR = Cobb Flex = D. Murray TE = Cook Def = Broncos K = Zuerlein Bench QB = Romo RB = Pierce WR = Austin WR = Nicks WR = Blackmon TE = Cameron TE = Rudolph Like my team except RB depth. One injury to either Martin/Morris and I could be screwed. -
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 16, 2013 -> 08:00 AM) So one thing I'm starting to realize is that this Emery guy has an eye for talent. Two drafts in and the Bears have more depth and players who look like quality guys than I've seen in years. Kyle Long is the steal of the draft. Certainly looks good by comparison to JA.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 02:41 PM) The interview I heard was different. He didn't mention any of the actual scouting. He only said he had never seen him so it's hard to judge the hitting (due to the Cuban league difference) but with the lack of athleticism he didn't expect as much. Here was Law's exact quote:

QUOTE (Boogua @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 09:21 AM) That would be insane. Black alone, considering where Illinois was a bit over a year ago, would be insane. Most people thought it would be 2015 until Groce got a true impact level recruit. I really like Groce, but he still needs to prove he can close the deal on these guys. It's great being talked about with a lot of top recruits and being included in top threes or fives, but in the end, you gotta get the commitment and not be runner-up. Hopefully, this is the year he gets those top recruits. -
QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 12:07 AM) They guy's been rated as 70 hit / 70 power. Who cares how fast he runs or if he can jump over a car? I think KLaw also disputed the notion of his 70/70 grades. He basically said that means he would hit .320 with 30 HRs right away. For comparison sake, here are the guys in that ballpark last year: Miguel Cabrera (.333/44) Ryan Braun (.319/41) Adrian Beltre (.321/36) Robinson Cano (.313/33) Andrew McCutchen (.327/31) Prince Fielder (.313/30) Mike Trout (.326/30) Billy Butler (.313/29) I think that is why Law doubts the Abreu hype machine.

https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/...eseason-week-1/ Rookie's performance in Week One. Not that it is hugely indicative of anything, but Long was the second-highest graded first-round pick in Pre-Season Game 1. Just interesting.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2013 -> 01:50 PM) The White Sox aren't even in the discussion? huh? I think it's all speculation from the people Bowden has talked to, so I would not put much stock into what he has said. Abreu makes perfect sense for the Sox, so it would be really surprising to see the Sox not involved.
-
Bowden has an ESPN Inside article on him. Among the highlights: And he calls the Marlins the favorites to sign him based on people he has talked to. In order: Marlins, Red Sox, Rangers, Mariners, A's, Nationals and Rockies. Take it for what it's worth. Like has been mentioned with Cespedes, Athletics came out of nowhere to sign him.

QUOTE (farmteam @ Aug 12, 2013 -> 12:36 PM) That's still somewhat confusing to me, but also not since they're in different conferences (and because Ohio State is just an objectively bigger athletic school). Didn't maggsmaggs go to Mizzou but he roots for Illinois? That'd be more apt, because although they're in different conferences they're still rivals. Yep. Die-hard Illinois basketball fan my entire life, so it an easy decision for me to root for Illinois in basketball. My allegiance to Illinois football was not as strong nor have they been good most of my life (minus Sugar Bowl/Rose Bowl years), so I was easily turned into a Mizzou fan for the Illinois-Mizzou football game. That being said, I still am a fan of both schools. -
Puig's 7-year, $42 million deal is looking like a bargain. If we could get something similar for Abreu would make sense, especially a guy in his prime. Cubans are sort of becoming the next market efficiency.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Aug 11, 2013 -> 06:23 PM) Gio was also a good pick by the Sox. He was a supp pick. Good call.. Totally slipped my mind.

HS pitcher would def be out of the norm for the Sox. Last was Honel? Before that Stumm? Not a great track record with those guys. Although we did trade for Danks/Floyd.

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 11, 2013 -> 03:00 PM) They are? Smh They're also way more athletic, versatile, and play a faster style. They are also guys that can qualify with no issues at even a great institution like Duke like Magette and Dockery before them. -

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 11, 2013 -> 08:45 AM) If Jahlil goes to Duke, you can bet Jabari will stay 2 years. Duke also in on Charles Mathews from St. Rita now. WTF Duke recruits well-educated 5-Stars. All three are 5-Stars and well-educated kids from good families. Why is it that surprising? -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 12:50 AM) Why would he quit as his current age? If he feels his back can hold out, he would want that money wouldn't he? He'll be 38 next march 5. He hit .298 a year ago with 26 homers and 76 RBI. This year he's down to .241, 8 and 36 ribbies. but he has struck out 50 times in 333 at bats. I personally feel it'll be a health issue. He knows his body. The reporters have not even addressed him retiring yet, have they? I have a feeling when we see that story, we're going to hear Paulie wants to keep playing. Maybe he'll quit as he turns 38; maybe not. Until we hear from Paulie speaking to reporters, how can we assume anything? We don't know what Paul is thinking. In the past, he has talked about retiring after this deal. How can that speculation not be stronger after this dismal year and all the health issues?

QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 4, 2013 -> 01:38 PM) Dunn has definitely figured something out. You can see how he's done much better at adjusting his approach to the situation, count, and pitcher. Early in his career here, including last year, it seemed like he was indiscriminately trying to hit a homer The way he is hitting now, someone would definitely benefit from his addition in the stretch run. Clearly would clear waivers, I have got to imagine Hahn is going to dangle him.
