  1. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ May 31, 2013 -> 06:39 AM) be interested to see if Micah Johnson makes the Baseball America Friday Prospect Hot Sheet today. They have a strong track record of ignoring Sox prospects. Believe that Phegley and Erik Johnson the only two to get recognized this season. I think Beck was in the "team picture" once. But really, we do not have many prospects having good seasons, so its probably justified.
  2. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 29, 2013 -> 11:08 AM) Maybe you trade for a guy like AJ Ellis, John Buck, or even Jonathan LuCroy if you don't want to give Phegley a try. If 2B remains an issue, perhaps Chase Utley is an option. Relievers are always available, just as back of the rotation starters are. There will be options if the Sox are close. They don't need to make a huge splash. The problem is that our system is so bereft of talent that we have the least amount to offer teams in trades. Right now, there is probably only one player we have that you can say very likely will be an solid ML player (Johnson). I also don't believe Hahn is going to be as reckless in trading cost-controlled players as KW was, especially with starting pitching where average pitchers are getting $10 million per season. Granted, KW traded players who had high value at the time and ended up doing nothing with a few exceptions (Morse, Hudson, Gio). EDIT: I should note Erik Johnson to avoid confusion with the many other Johnsons we have in the system.
  3. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 28, 2013 -> 11:49 AM) You know Marty is trolling right? Dont take the bait. Trolling or asking a serious question about a player? Jones has been brutal this year. He was great last year, but this is a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately league. And right now, Jones does not have the control of any of his pitches right now to be a valuable MLB asset. I obviously disagree about his ceiling being in the 6th or 7th because he has two potential plus-pitches if his command is right, but I think it is a legit question. Ramon Troncoso who has walked four batters in 20 innings at AAA with a 1.35 ERA seems like a possible replacement. Clearly, there are things Jones needs to work on to get back to being a solid member of the bullpen. Perhaps, the best course is AAA or maybe it is leave him in the bullpen and hope Coop/Thigpen can work with him. But I don't think it is trolling to suggest a reliever with a 7.04 ERA and a -0.9 WAR could use some AAA time.
  4. QUOTE (hawksfan61 @ May 27, 2013 -> 08:41 AM) I feel like I am with a lot of these posts around here itching for five years of 90+ losses all so we can get some more names on the BA Top 100 list. So you are content missing the playoffs the last five years but only losing 80 games? The net effect is the same: Another year, another year sitting at home in October (in fact 11 of the last 14 years, we have been sitting out the playoffs despite arguably the weakest division in that time frame). Why not miss the playoffs while having a plan to be good five years down the road instead of this let's be good enough to be in the race, but not good enough to win the race. I'm probably just a cynic and a perpetual pessimist with the Sox, but there is good reason. I see the same thing year in and year out where they simply don't have enough over the long haul of the season to do anything but "be in the race" only to fall out of it in September.
  5. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 26, 2013 -> 11:58 AM) If you have all these pieces of a championship rotation , besides setting yourself up for years of b****ing, what is the purpose of selling all of your other parts? If you have these pieces, going for it makes even more sense. Going for it how? The current roster is not Championship Worthy. The offense and bullpen depth are not good. So either you have to have money for free agents or money to take on from trades (which we don't) or have prospects to bring up to trade for ML-ready talent (which we don't). We are the epitome of stuck between a rock and a hard place. The rotation no doubt is Championship worthy, ditto for the backend of the bullpen (Reed-Crain), but everything else brings the team down.
  6. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 13, 2013 -> 08:53 PM) Wow. Someone wanted to discuss your comment on a message board. Welcome to the internet. Great post.
  7. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 13, 2013 -> 06:25 PM) It's amazing how many complain that the Sox suck, but then only want them to be worse. So what are Sox fans suppose to do oh wise one? Complaining about the current state of team precludes the want of the team to rebuild? Makes sense.
  8. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 13, 2013 -> 06:19 PM) Can you point out some examples of total teardowns that led to "sustained success" 2 or 3 years later. It was a generic time frame. Ok, so maybe it's five years. I don't care. It's amazing how critical everyone is on this board over posts. Wow.
  9. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 13, 2013 -> 06:16 PM) How do you know it's only gonna take 2-3 years? It could take 10 years if you are lucky. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 13, 2013 -> 06:17 PM) Yeah, I am still waiting to see who has been able to do it in that short of a time period. Well if it takes five years, then so be it. But we do have a terrific young pitching core which is generally the hardest part of rebuilding. We have that nailed, at least.
  10. QUOTE (Jake @ May 13, 2013 -> 05:47 PM) linky It's worth reading all the way through. Basically, a tear down doesn't offer enough benefit -- especially when our pitching is basically elite. We don't have an ML-caliber offense. Tearing down is the only way to become a yearly contender. I will gladly take 2-3 years of crap in order to have sustained success rather than years of mediocrity.
  11. I honestly thought Sale's perfect game would be thwarted by the Sox offense not scoring and going into extra innings.
  12. Honestly, if I am Hahn, I trade every asset you can except Sale, Quintana and Santiago. This team needs a major overhaul. We need prospects and we need to a couple of top-five drafts picks in back-to-back years so that we can rebuild. It's brutal watching this team now, so I really don't care if we are even worse if it means a better future. As is, we have a lackluster major league team coupled with probably the worst farm system in baseball. Honestly, there is no choice but to fire sale and try to rebuild, in my opinion. But SS said, you have to be smart when trading the players.
  13. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ May 10, 2013 -> 06:27 PM) Micah Johnson === baller. Starting to get excited about this guy. Maybe its just my natural cynicism of all things White Sox minor leagues now (I was burned too many times in the past being uber optimistic), but I honestly cannot get excited over any prospect we have, maybe beside Erik Johnson.
  14. QUOTE (bmags @ May 10, 2013 -> 09:50 AM) Yup I hate the Ovechkin love. Is he a top-five offensive player in the league? Probably. But he doesn't give two s***s about defense. Toews is way more worthy than him. Ovechkin was plus 2 this year. I am not necessarily saying Toews should be in the top three for the Hart, but I have no doubt in my mind that he is more valuable than Ovechkin.

QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ May 9, 2013 -> 08:35 PM) I would like to see the professional scouts start to taking a serious look at Micah Johnson soon. We know he's pretty fast, but not this fast. It would be good to know if he is doing this with the right techniques or just taking advantage of inexperienced pitchers down in low A. He employs an unorthodox approach apparently. http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=2...p;tcid=tw_share
  16. QUOTE (kevo880 @ May 8, 2013 -> 05:43 PM) Is it a concensus around here that Ordonez and Lee were both juicing? I would argue that most of the Latin American prospects take stuff. Making it to the Majors is their ticket out of poverty and a way to provide for their family. Most of us here probably would juice, too, in their situations.
  17. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ May 8, 2013 -> 04:03 PM) Anyone notice the scouts name and is it the Washington GM? From Wikipedia:
  18. QUOTE (Boogua @ May 7, 2013 -> 10:30 AM) Yeah, just like they screwed up by not putting Lebron on Terry during the stretch in the 2011 finals. Oh wait. Lebron can't guard Nate man to man. LeBron can guard Rose man-on-man pretty darn effectively, so he can probably do the same to Nate. While Nate is a little quicker than LeBron, LeBron's sheer size and his length make up for any quickness disparity.
  19. Briefly turned into ESPN 1000 today. My gosh, that show is unlistenable. Jurko is worse than Boers. At least Boers doesn't sidetrack from the discussion of which he adds little, but Jurko does not add anything to the discussion and always detracts from it. How soon til the morning show is changed? Feel bad for Carmen because he can and has proven to be a good radio host, but Jurko is gonna bring him down.
  20. Though Veal was gonna be our LOOGY for the next 10 years. Bad turn of events for both parties.
  21. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Apr 27, 2013 -> 03:13 AM) Look, its the NFL Draft. You try to trade down if you find someone, but if you dont you take the guy you wanted anyways even if it is a little early. The Bears did that twice. You cannot always find a willing trade partner, and even if you do the return may not justify the risk of "your guy" not being there when you pick later. When you're the Bears, with obvious weaknesses, you can only grade this thing right now in terms of positions filled. In that respect this is a good draft. I can live with: LT- Bushrod LG- Long C- Garza RG- Carimi RT- Webb I mean its still bad. Because Webb, Garza and Carimi are all pretty bad. Bushrod is not a sure thing. Long could easily bust, too. Its still got to be one of, if not the, worst OL in the NFL. However there at least now is a chance that maybe somehow Carimi stays healthy/figures it out, Webb learns how to play tackle in the NFL (or being on the right side masks how bad he is a little), Bushrod plays up to his contract and Long pans out. If that happens Garza, who is totally f***ing hopeless and shouldn't even be on an NFL roster, will have 4 other competent guys covering his ass. I dont think that best case scenario will happen. I cant imagine why anyone would be expecting it. But hey, at least Emery is trying, we have some new bodies in there and maybe a couple years from now if Long and Bushrod work out we'll have a good NFL OL. Reversing all the neglect and incompetence of Jerry Angelo is going to take a while. So yea, I like the Bears draft. Gives us a little glimmer of hope. Would've liked to see OL again in R2, would've really liked to see R1, R2 and R4 all go to the OL especially but whatever. Don't forget about Matt Slauson who has been a slightly above-average OG for the last couple of years. He should definitely be starting with Carimi and Long battling out for the other OG spot.
  22. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 26, 2013 -> 02:18 PM) Tony Wise, Wanne's buddy, worked with Long at the Senior Bowl. He said he would put him at LT. Thinks he's as good as the #1 pick. With quotes: http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2013/04/26/vet...ong-very-often/
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 26, 2013 -> 01:01 PM) This guy is just unbelievably stupid. Bruce Feldman ‏@BFeldmanCBS 1h Report: Tyrann Mathieu no-showed meetings with Texans, Seattle: http://cbsprt.co/14kyjXl Honeybadger don't care.
  24. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 26, 2013 -> 11:05 AM) Hub hates the Long pick, so I'm pretty sure we have a future hall-of-famer While I am little angry that Bears couldn't figure out a trade down to take Long at the end of Round 1 (Falcons traded up to 22) or early Round 2, I think that is my anger over the pick more than anything. Hub Arkush is a normal joe-schmo critiquing picks. Phil Emery does this for a living. Who should I trust more?
  25. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 25, 2013 -> 09:58 PM) Saw on twitter that as long as Long was on the board, the Bears weren't trading down. The fact that it seems like the Bears are the only team that rated Long as top-20 caliber, you have to think something is off with the Bears here. Hope I am wrong. But now, you assume Matt Slauson starts at one guard spot and now regardless, one first-round pick of the club in the last three years will not be starting when the season starts (Carimi or Long).
