  1. 3 weeks ago Bruce Levine said "it wasn't going to happen" because the Sox view him as a 4th OF. If the Sox really wanted Rowand, why did they bring back Pods?

  4. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 05:00 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That's why I am an advocate for trading him for a potential Hall of Famer in Carl Crawford now, That's quite a reach
  5. QUOTE(SoxnGiants @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 03:39 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I know it's a broken record with Sox fans... but Crawford is the guy we should target. He's exactly what we need. Wells is great but will be really expensive while Crawford is signed long term to a reasonable contract. Which in terms, makes him "expensive" to get.
  6. 48 = XL, 52 = XXL WHarris, you're around my size, so go with the 48 unless you want a baggy look with longer sleeves.

  8. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Dec 3, 2006 -> 05:14 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That's an interesting thought that a lot on this board probably haven't thought of...Crede as 1B. Are there other teams that could use a 1B and a starter that can be a trade partner? Crede would easily be one of the worst offensive first baseman in the league and his actual talent (defense) would be wasted. Completely stupid IMO.
  9. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2006 -> 07:50 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Riske somehow went the entore 2005 season without recording a single successful "Hold". First off, the hold stat sucks. Secondly, Riske wasn't used in a role where he would get many holds due to the other members in Cleveland's bullpen (Wickman, Howry, Rhodes, Betancourt, Cabrera, and Matt Miller) being so dominant that season. Hell, he was 1-1 in saves that year. Usually middle relievers have a hand full of blown saves due to MLB goofy system. But hey, if you want to judge a player based on one season, more power to you.
  10. QUOTE(Drew @ Dec 3, 2006 -> 06:09 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Joe Crede is likely a 25-100 guy who is an elite fielder in the American League and one we probably won't be able to afford to resign because of Scott Boras. Is A-Rod worth that plus a proven starting pitcher? I don't think so. I'm all for trading if it would help, but this is a lot better for the Yankees than it is for us. How exactly is Crede "likely" a 25-100 guy when he has never had 100 RBI's in a season, and only had at least 25 homer once? In 11 full seasons, A-rod has had 25 HR and 100 RBI's ten times. God, Crede is easily the most overrated Sox player.
  11. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 3, 2006 -> 03:48 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Riske's numbers are a bit of a mirage. He pitches great when the game is out of hand or not on the line which aids his ERA, but as the last three teams he has played for foud out, he is absolute crap when he needs to stop runs from scoring, or keep the other team at bay. He is one of those players where his numbers are misleading. Proof please, now. According to ESPN over the past 3 seasons, Riske has pitched well in close and late situations. In 230 at-bats batters had a line of .230/.312/.396 against him. I'd take that from our fifth guy in the pen.
  12. QUOTE(beck72 @ Dec 3, 2006 -> 05:30 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The sox aren't paying Vazquez total salary. IIRC, at least $3 mill is coming from elsewhere. Dick was talking about the arbitration process in 2008 for Vazquez. He can't be offered less than 80% of his 2007 salary, which is around $12.5 million.
  13. Teams don't have a choice on giving up draft picks. Somebody would eventually sign him (he won't retire at the age of 30) but they would probably get him at an even cheaper cost because the team would have the leverage of saying "well we don't want to give up a pick, so this is why we are offereing less." Also, if one of the bottom 15 teams signs him they won't lose a first round pick. When David Riske signs with someone, I'm quite sure it will be a multiyear deal with at least $2 million per year. He;ll probably get a contract like Chad Bradford.
  14. Poor Jimbo. Two months of trash talking and acting like a Cubs fan talking about the number of KU fans that would be there towards Sleepysoxfan, and then they come out and lay a massive egg after Self extends himself.
  15. Riske was a type A, so we would've had at least two picks.
  16. QUOTE(rcpweiner @ Dec 2, 2006 -> 01:30 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'm still trying to figure out exactly what McCarthy has done in his career for people to think he's untouchable ... He has posted here and at WSI. Seriously, he's cheap and had impressive minor league numbers, and a great run at the end of 2005.
  17. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 2, 2006 -> 12:46 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> FWIW, Gammons said this morning that Manny Ramirez to the White Sox is still a possibilty. He claims OG has convinced KW that Manny would not be a distraction. He also said McCarthy is who Boston wants. Everyone wants McCarthy except Ozzie. Gammons has been obsessed with McCarthy for long time. A year after the Maggs-Nomar rumored trade, Gammons started claiming McCarthy was part of the trade too.
  18. So you're expecting every journey man reliever and minor leaguer the Sox bring into Spring Training to have a plus fastball and always be able to pitch in pressure situations? Good luck finding him. Do the Sox or any team need all 6 of their relievers to meet those qualifications?
  19. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 2, 2006 -> 12:32 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> But you could fill that roll with a journeyman or young guy making close to if not minimum. I think a lot of people think Riske is the David Riske of 3 or 4 years ago. Cleveland insisted Boston take him in the Crisp trade. Guys that go to arbitration or get offered it generally get raises, and Riske would be in line for a significant raise, not based on what he is, but based on what he was, and some misleading numbers. KW doesn't want to pay him what the cost would be to keep him and I don't blame him. I think he has his sights set higher. At least I hope he does. You honestly believe the Sox will be able to find a journeyman pitcher to sign a 1 year deal around $2.5 million with him knowing his role in the bullpen would be limited? Oh yeah, he better perform well enough to compensate for those two draft picks not gained that could've been used to get a "young guy making close to if not the league minimum." Also, who's to say Riske is such a lock to accept arbitration after making only $1.8 million last season? There are lots of stupid GM's out there willing to give multiyear deals to middle relievers.
  20. David Riske made $1.8 million last season which means at a minimum he would have cost the Sox $1.44 million. With the deals teams are giving, well the Orioles, are giving to relievers, he'll probably be looking for a multi year deal. If Riske accepted arbitration I couldn't imagine him getting more than $3 million for 2007. The guy has had solid numbers pretty much throughout his career, but he had a reputation of being soft and not to be used in close games. With the bullpen in its current state, I have a hard time believing that Riske would be put in a spot where the game was on the line. Ideally I'd use him in the 6th or 7th inning in a game in which one of our starters didn't go long enough, or against a few right handers. As of this moment we don't have anyone in our bullpen making over $1 million for 2007, and yet we can afford to give $2.9 million to Podsednik. What's the harm in offering Riske $2.5 million?
  21. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Dec 1, 2006 -> 10:58 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's 14 and clear here with no snow at all. Heaven forbid how cold itd be if there was. The wind blowing in your face at 6:30 AM isn't a good feeling though.
  22. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 1, 2006 -> 04:53 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> We would have had a better chance of winning the WS last year if Gload was our LF instead of Pods. It really is just mind-boggling how so many people seem to forget how bad Pods has been for the last year and a half. But I agree with what some of the wiser posters have stated....this move doesn't guarantee he'll be on the team in 2007. Gload was even worse in 2005, and if it doesn't guarantee Pods will be on the team, why are you flipping out so much?
  23. To answer your question- Soxfan101. As for Rollins, too much money for too little of an OBP.
  24. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Nov 30, 2006 -> 06:01 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I don't know how the bullpen can be considered "quality" after 2006. Thornton has had 1 good season now. It wasn't long ago that this board was bbqing him after his first outing in Tucson. MacDougal most likely will get injured, he seems to almost every season. Jenks ERA was higher than Todd Jones, and we were all making fun of the Tigers for having Todd Jones as their closer. Aardsma has been given up on by 2 organizations now. He was part of a deal for LaTroy Hawkins, and he got traded for a guy who couldn't get anyone out at the end of his White Sox career in Neal Cotts. Haeger hasn't proven anything yet, and KW was on the airwaves the other day singing the praises of one Boone Logan who for the most part has been a gas can in the major leagues. All 6 of the starters have issues as well. Obviously at least 1 is going to go. I hope at least 2 go. Its amazing how much more highly this pitching staff is thought of after not having watch them throw meatballs up to the plate for a couple of months. Thornton has always had high praise for his talent and stuff. He attributes his turn around to Cooper and ozzie giving him more opportunities. MacDougal is still a quality pitcher with nasty stuff, but I agree that he is a health risk. Jenks is a better pitcher than Jones, and his ERA was inflated due to a poor stretch during the last 3 weeks. (it was 3.36 on September 4th.) A period of time which you call Freddy's positive stats meaningless. That's hypocritical. Oh yeah, Bobby's ERA was a whopping .06 higher than Jones'. :rolly Cotts has been "given up" by two organizations as well. The only difference is that Cotts was traded by two smart GMs. Haeger didn't show you anything last September? Of course if he pitched like Cotts you would've made the point on how much he sucks. Logan has a long way to go, but he is still very young. McCarthy is a starting pitcher, and will not be in the bullpen in 2007 Nobody saw Buehrle's 2006 coming Garcia had a little down year, but despite what some nimrods preach, he was still effective. Contreras had some great stretches and some awful stretches. His bad stretches involved his health being questioned, so at least it isn't a mental problem like in New York. Vazquez-same thing, different team. He can still be an effective #4. Garland started off horrible, didn't get his ERA under 5.00 until late July, but put up numbers comparable to Garcia. I think the Sox could get a lot for Jon and I don't think he'll win 18 games again next year by pitching as his career norms unless the Sox add Manny Ramirez.
  25. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Nov 30, 2006 -> 05:47 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> TWIW, but Peter Gammons has reported that KW has been discussing Ramirez with Theo Epstein. If the White Sox have the ability to take on Manny's contract, I can't understand why they would not spend that money on pitching AND a better OF. Would you rather give $60 million to Manny Ramirez, or $30-50 million for trash like Gary Matthews Jr., Pierre, Eaton, and Meche etc ?
