  1. Please be the Reds. seriously the guy signed a 1 year deal for $3 million last year. What did he do to command this contract?
  2. This trade is kinda reminding me of the Thornton trade who ironically made Cotts available. Take a look back at some of the people's reactions from that trade: "He's not very good." "Quite disappointing that we held on to Borchard so long that all we could get is a mediocre reliever that makes Marte look like he has pinpoint control. Oh well" "clocked as high as 97mph with no control maybe coop can get him under control ala Jenks. This is a low risk/high reward type move for the sox. If they can get him under control sometime this year, he has a hell of an arm." (This trade has much more risk involved) Thorton's upside is that he has an injury history. The only upside here is maybe he'll blow out his arm again and save us the agony of watching him walk 7 batters/9IP. Do not see any way this trade helps Sox at all. Thornton has had 7 years to learn how to throw strikes. He hasn't figured it out. What makes you think 2 weeks with Coop will suddenly cure him? Read this article: http://ussmariner.com/2006/03/20/bye-bye-matt-thornton/ Let's give Aardsma a chance. He won't be used in the same way the Cubs used him. About this Vasquez character; Isn't he eligible for the Rule V draft? It's very possible we could lose him leading to more people flipping out about this trade.
  3. I for one will root against Cotts hoping he gets sent to AAA. I'm moving to Des Moines soon.
  4. Innings pitched: Garcia, Garland, Buehrle, Vazquez, Contreras Wins: Garland (18,) Garcia (17,) Contreras, Buehrle, Vazquez Losses (Fewest): Garland, Garcia and Contreras, Vazquez, Buehrle ERA: Contreras, Garland (4.51,) Garcia (4.53,) Vazquez, Buehrle WHIP: Contreras (1.27,) Garcia (1.28,) Vazquez (1.29,) Garland (1.36,) Buehrle K/9: Vazquez (8.17,) Contreras, Garcia, Garland, Buehrle BB/9: Garland, Garcia, Buehrle, Vazquez, Contreras K/BB: Vazquez, Garcia, Garland, Contreras, Buehrle OPS against: Contreras, Vazquez, Garcia, Garland, Buehrle
  5. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 04:57 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> He really was our best pitcher (not saying a whole lot). Based on what? Wins? Somebody please break it down for me. I could make a strong argument that Garcia was better in 2006.
  6. QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 04:48 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Why? KW Jon was our best pitcher last year. Don't trade Garland. Based on what? Wins?
  7. QUOTE(qwerty @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 03:38 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> 96 is fast... don't get me wrong but there are more than ten relievers in the majors who throw a fastball as fast. We're not talking about topping speeds, we're talking about the average fast ball. I don't remember the exact numbers, but John Dewon from http://www.baseballinfosolutions.com/ said Jenks, Thornton, MacDougal were all in the top for average fastball speeds, and Aardsma easily had the highest average on the Cubs.
  8. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 11:43 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Most MLB executives would take Rich Hill over McCarthy in a heartbeat. No they wouldn't. I mean seriously. If they were the same age, but Hill is almost as old as Garland. Wite, how do you expect Rocco to put up a .320 BA when he has a career OBP of .329?
  9. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 12:03 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Who cares if Aardsma throws hard, is it really a plus having four guys in the bullpen whose out pitch is bringing heat? The fact of the matter is the White Sox, had they been patient, could have gotten more for Cotts than they got here. I never thought I'd see the day, but regardless of the outcome here, it seems like the Cubs got the better of the deal. Ugh. Who cares? This was the same thing that was said about Thornton when we acquired him last year. What good is Cotts if his manager has zero confidence in him and his "sneaky" fastball ain't so "sneaky?" I think this trade is even for both sides, but I don't know why the Cubs would acquire another lefty, and why the Sox would rid themselves of a lefty unless they are signing Walker or Kelly Wunsch
  10. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 11:10 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> For David Aardsma....what an absolutely brutal trade by KW. I'm worried about this offseason, I really am. Think again. Aardsma is one of the hardest throwers in the game. In fact I remember John Dujaun on the Score saying he was the hardest thrower for the Cubs (AVG fast ball is around 96 MPH) and Jenks, Thornton, and MacDougall were in the top 10 as well. Maybe acquiring this Vasquez will stop people from spelling Javy's last name incorrectly.
  11. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 10:44 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Isn't Ray King a FA this off-season? I know he's been mentioned on here before, back when he was pitching well for the Cards. He was terrible against LHP last year, but he is a Chicago guy.
  12. I was in favor of trading Jon Garland and Paul Konerko for RJ and signing a stopgap first baseman like Tony Clark. I wasn't trying to say "look at what YOU suggested X amount of years ago." It's your principles that I disagree with. I don't think trading established players foucsed on pitching prospects thinking they are going to anchor our organization for years to come is the right way to go. You hammer this down in every post.
  13. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 01:27 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> What!? The rotation assembled from God's own image can't even net a pitching prospect? Looks like I should brace myself for disappointment when one of the starters do depart. Aside from a weak package, I just know we're going to demand the other club pay the players remaining salary. Thus, weakening our return value even more. OF COURSE Pelfrey isn't worth any of our starters, but if Minaya desires a paper thin starting rotation to maintain leads for his offense, then so be it. He can obtain Mulder, or some other scrub on the market. The Mets highly value this guy and won't give him up for a one year rental. Why is that so hard to understand? You are a broken record. Three years ago you were in favor of trading Maggs and Konerko to the Dodgers because "Jackson and Miller can both solitify our rotation for years to come" QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jan 17, 2004 -> 11:24 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It gets annoying when everyone ALWAYS seems to know whats going to happen and what won't. Its out of our control....and furthermore the trade makes sense when you consider Konerko is inconsistent and Maggs is in his walk year. His 14 Million dollar salary is going to be the base price for a multi-year contract and there is no way we should be him that over several years. I love the guy, but 14 million can be better spent. In the short run, as in this year, we might go through some hard times. I will still root for this team regardless of a last place finish. Hard to believe, but my uncle lives in Detroit and there are still many die-hard Tigers fans....and they're not 60 year old guys who remember the glory days of the franchise. I'll still b**** if they're terrible, but I know that this is temporary. In 05' there will be alot of money freed up to pursue free agents. Don't know all of them, but there will no doubt be alot with all the 1 year deals going around. Sox are getting quality pitchers in return. Jackson and Miller can both solitify our rotation for years to come........might not even have to wait that long to see them if there are problems in the 5th starter spot.
  14. QUOTE(RME JICO @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 11:42 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> To offset some of the costs of the Matsuzaka deal, the Boston Red Sox have made some adjustments for advertising purposes. Things to look for in 2007: 1. Fenway Park will now be referred to as Yenway Park 2. The Green Monster will now be called Godzilla 3. The Pesky Pole will be called the Fuji Pole 4. Hot Dogs will be replaced with Wasabi 5. All players will drive Toyota's 6. The 7th Inning Stretch will be replaced with a Sumo match on the mound Good stuff. Even better stuff. I guess Michael Rosenberg is just aother biased White Sox fan.
  15. QUOTE(KevHead0881 @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 11:07 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Didn't see this posted anywhere. From SI.com... http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writ...ed.scoop/2.html Well that ends half of the trade suggestions from here.
  16. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 02:08 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Carpenter's numbers werent really better... Roy Oswalt on the otherhand deserved it more than both of them and somehow received the least amount of votes. Carpenter: 15-8, 3.09 ERA, 221.2 IP, 184 K's 1.07 WHIP Oswalt: 15-8, 2.95 ERA, 220.2 IP, 166 K's, 1.17 WHIP Webb:16-8, 3.10 ERA, 235 IP, 178 SO, 1.13 WHIP Same amount of losses, almost identical wins, Carpenter has the much better WHIP and K/9. Oswalt only has the edge in ERA.
  17. QUOTE(Jimbo @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 12:08 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Call me crazy but I really dont want prospects for our starting pitchers...I want proven talent. You're not alone. 3 years ago people were putting together packages consisting of Magglio and/or Konerko for Edwin Jackson and Greg Miller. The Mets' prospects seem to be this year's flavor.
  18. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Nov 14, 2006 -> 11:16 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> See, it's funny you mention that the Yankees have paid that amount the last two years through the Luxury Tax. Are the Yankees also going to get almost all of it back through a TV deal in Japan, and then make money on the investment through merchandise, etc? I didn't think so, blogster. Just stop trying to claim your s*** don't stink. Unless the Japanese people are buying NESN t-shirts or hats, merchandising isn't a factor. The White Sox get just as much money from the "Welcome to New York, Johnny" T-shirts as the Red Sox and Yankees.
  19. Carpenter had better numbers and should've won it regardless of his postseason performance.
  20. So we'll trade the pitching Aaron Heilman for the OF Aaron Heilman? I have a hard time believing KW will trade Vazquez just because he has always liked him and it pretty much shows KW made a mistake trading for him. I'm not saying he won't trade Javy, and I'm not saying Javy won't be any good for the Sox. Personally I hope we keep him.
  21. QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Nov 13, 2006 -> 11:32 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The Score keeps on mentioning that the Sox want to improve the SS and CF possition. And Offman brought up the Vizquel and Rowand thing again. Take it for what its worth.... I expect KW to make 1 huge splash this offseason. We all know he doesn't want Detroit to be the main talk of the offseason with the aqcuisition of Sheffield. Expect the rumor wires to go off the hook these next few days.... stay tuned. George Ofman's doesn't bring anything to the table. The winter meetings usually have more action, but I read the Phillies are going to trade Burrell for a package including their old Prospect Johnny Estrada.
  22. Scott Eyre said he and his agent had a set price, and Jim Hendry overbidded, so he went to the Cubs. Eyre was more than a LOOGY with all of his appearances in 2005, so I expect Walker to get a contract similar to Mike Myers'. I'm not that big of a fan of signing free agent relievers to multi year deals, but I'd take Walker if he agrees to something like Myers' contract.
  23. QUOTE(Rooftop Shots @ Nov 12, 2006 -> 10:35 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I don't post very often, mainly because most of my previous replies were usually negative, and I'm sure I'll get a lot of hate replies on this one as well, but that's OK. You can hate me for disagreeing with me, but at the same time respect me for standing up in what I believe in. The one issue I have is that The Constitution was based on Biblical principles and put together by men that were Christian and were solely convicted that what they were putting together was baseed on the laws of this nation being guided by their biblical and Christian principles that they saw fit to be upheld. The men that put the Constitution together did not use The Koran as their means of guidance and conviction when putting our nations document together, therefore............, if you take your office by ways of an oath by the Koran, and you decide to go against anything that is in the Constitution,............. would you be not held guilty of breaking the law since the oath that you took was one that was from a source other than what the Constitution was based on in the first place? The Bible is what our founding leaders were convicted of and guided by, therefore if someone is going to take office, he/she better agree with it. If not, don't run! Agree or disagree with me! Whichever you choose! But my beef is, that once again, someone is trying to devalue and push out something that our country's rights, laws, and documents are based upon, and that I believe that God would like to see our country run..............on Judeo-Christian values and principles. The ACLU is always on the attack of it as well as other organizations. My OPINION.......If you want to be someone with a voice that help to govern laws in a state in our country, then you' better comply with what our founding fathers based it upon......and take an oath to it that shows your allegiance and respect to it. If you can't do that..............THEN EITHER DON"T RUN FOR OFFICE OR MOVE TO A COUNTRY WHERE YOUR FATHERS MADE THERE LAWS BASED UPON THEIR CONVICTIONS! THIS IS AMERICA! GOD'S COUNTRY! GOD'S HOLY WORD IS THE BIBLE! Simply stated..........RESPECT IT and ABIDE BY IT! OUR COUNTRY IS FOUNDED AND GUIDED BY IT. IF you cannot do that........and you are against , and you want to do whatever is in your power to devalue it........................THEN LEAVE! Thank GOD the Constitution prevents the Government from mandating religion on individuals like you are suggesting.
  24. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 12, 2006 -> 07:23 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> How would people feel about giving Walker and Speier around 4M deals for 2 seasons with a team option for a 3rd? (think of the deals Howry and Scott Eyre got last off-season). It significantly beefs up our pen, adding Speier and Walker to Jenks, MacDougall, Thornton etc. should definitely increase our bullpen ERA from last season which we majorly struggled at. Signing Walker gives you the flexibility to trade Cotts + prospect for say Coco Crisp as well, if you don't want to sign Pierre or Dave Roberts in the off-season. Wonder what the Angels would want for Figgins as well? I assume they're gonna go real hard after J.D Drew now since they missed out on Ramirez today. You want to give $4million per to Walker??? Or are you expecting both will settle for 2 year, $2 million per deals? In the first case, that's too much for Walker. In the second case, that's not enough for Speier.
  25. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 12, 2006 -> 06:39 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> He also claims that Kerry Wood had the chance to get a muti year deal for more money on the open market. He is hoping that the cubs fans believe everything out of his mouth. ...and how would he know after the exclusive negotiations rights ended less than 12 hours before either guy signed? Hendry is full of it.
