QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Oct 25, 2006 -> 11:56 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> MLB rules make any large sum of money to be tied specifically to a player and that sum will follow a player. Otherwise certain teams (or owners) could completely profitize the business and just sell off players for cash and make tons of profits and just pocket them while the team goes to hell. What's the exact amount? When Vazquez was traded to the D'backs, the Yanks sent cash. When Vazquez was traded to the Sox the D'Backs sent cash as well but I don't think it was an equal amount that the Yankees sent. At the time of the trade a lot of people got the impression when the D'backs were sending money, we'd only be paying $6 million a year for Javy. The were taking his salary minus the money the Yanks sent, minus the money the D'backs were sending.

2005 ALCS = 2006 World Series. The Tigers and Sox had a lot of time off. St. Louis and the Angels had to play consecutive games because of a rain out. The Cards and Angels off of pure adernaline shut down their respective opponents. In game 2 of the ALCS, there was a huge media hoopla about AJ's strikeout. In game 2 of the WS, there was a huge media hoopla about Rogers' brown spot. I won't be surprised when the Tigers win this series 4-1

The guy was on the federal bench. I think that's related to politics. I don't get involved in these threads too much, but I wasn't trying to laugh at it or send a message of "take that republicans." I saw references to Kennedy or whatever Clinton was involved with back in Arkansas when Cheney shot the reporter. I've seen posts in the GOP thread regarding events involving muslims and then posting the message. "remember. It's a peacful religion." What does that have to do with politics?

Our bullpen is very underrated by our own fans. McCarthy sucked, but he wasn't a complete failure. Cotts did have some good stretches early on. MacDougall was very good, Thornton led the team in ERA and pretty much all of his hits were shattered bat bloopers, and Riske was a good pickup as well. Perhaps Bowden felt the Nats had a shot to re-sign him, and if they couldn't, they would at least get a couple of picks for their efforts. I do remember articles talking about how much Soriano enjoyed playing there.
-
What's up with Bowden's DUI? I remember reading that he was going to be fired if he was convicted of it. To be fair to Bowden, he shouldn't have traded Soriano because he thought there wasn't going to be compensation. The last the time the Sox operated under that thought, they ended up with Jon Adkins. He should've traded Soriano because there were a lot of teams showing interest and the Nats weren't in it. I think there had to be some good offers, but Bowden was probably looking for more than enough.

QUOTE(AbeFroman @ Oct 21, 2006 -> 10:37 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> This thread sucks. It started with a commercial thats partisan bullsh*t to begin with... Following that, we've got 15 posts of name calling. What ever happened to the ban on attacking or making snarky comments about a group of people (i.e Muslims, "leftists," "right wing nuts.")

Wow. I was surprised to see Fields had as many walks in 25 PA as Neifi Perez (when he was with the Cubs) did in 241 PA. If Crede's back is that bad or he is asking for too much money, I'm more than willing to send him packing for Fields to play in addition to getting a nice package.

QUOTE(RibbieRubarb @ Oct 13, 2006 -> 09:58 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Jay is an incredibly talented writer who has every right to voice his opinion. But what troubles me and why I dislike him is his hypocrisy. Plain and simple. To me you cannot be taken seriously or be trusted as a newspaper man if you are a hypocrite. It's a trait he exposes quite often. Plus, he cannot compare himself to Roger Ebert. Ebert does meet with producers, actors, directors all the time. He goes to film festivals and, most importantly, he LOVES movies. Jay has a true hatred for the sports he covers. QUOTE(bmags @ Oct 18, 2006 -> 01:13 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> plus ebert is incredibly tactful in identifying what he found particularly offensive/brilliant in the movie, to let the reader decide if that is something he would like to see/doesn't mind. Most of the people who say "if ebert panned it it must be good" are not only stupid but probably didn't read his review. I think you guys are on to something = -
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Oct 19, 2006 -> 10:51 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> This is probably something that should be posted in another thread, but I just was thinking because of the way someone else said something else in this thread.... Did anyone ever stop and think that maybe, just maybe, they let McCarthy rot on purpose this year? The reason I say that is because they know he's going to he that good and wanted to keep him on the cheap for one more year... because that way when his current contract is up, he won't get as much simply because he hasn't put up any numbers, save next year? Do you all see what I'm trying to say? I'm not saying it very well. ....and to think, you always rip apart IggyD before reading any of his posts. So why did ownership raise the payroll?

QUOTE(AirScott @ Oct 19, 2006 -> 06:15 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> with that train of thought, why not just hold off on that move and keep Pods? maybe he can regain the magic he had through the first half of 2005. That's an excellent point. Pierre might be half the salary of Ichiro next year (doubt it as he is looking for $8 million per,) but he wants a multiyear deal. A 3 year, $24 million commitment to Pierre? No. A 1 year, $11+ million commitment to Suzuki? No, just because of the ent we have to give up. Ichiro can drive in runs and hit the ball out of the infield unlike Pierre. Ichiro is also a better baserunner.

QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Oct 18, 2006 -> 04:51 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> While I agree, I would rather move Thome as well. The question is would the Yanks take a chance on him being thier 1st baseman?? Maybe a platoon of him and Giambi might work but I think they would rather have Kong...IMO Yes, a two left hand hitting platoon. Thome and Konerko aren't waiving their NTC's to leave Chicago, let alone to go to New York. If the Sox thought Gload was a capable everyday first baseman, why did they re-sign Konerko last offseason?

QUOTE(Leonard Zelig @ Oct 18, 2006 -> 12:06 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'm not suggesting we go after Iwamura, I know absolutley nothing about him. But do you remeber this one guy named Iguchi? Yeah that came to me. Originally I was just thinking of the third base position. Iguchi filled a need. DBAH0 is creating a hole and then filling it with an unknown.

QUOTE(VAfan @ Oct 17, 2006 -> 04:24 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'll confess I haven't done a statistical analysis of this, but I have to disagree about the walks. Crede's batting average went from .239 to .252, to .283 over the last three years, as his K's dropped from 81, to 66, to 58 over that span. Thus, he's obviously able to put the bat on the ball better and do more with it. This has given him a lot more confidence at the plate than he's ever had. The next step for him would be to just lay off pitches out of the zone that he's been fouling off. I don't expect him to jump up to 80 BBs next season, but an upward progression to 70 over a couple of years shouldn't be that hard. What about his walk rate? (PA/BB. The lower, the better.) 2004: 15.41 2005: 18.28 2006: 20.43 Yikes. To put it in prospective, Thome had a PA/BB of 5.58 this season. I'm not saying Joe should walk 100 times in a season, but once every 5 games is atrocious. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Oct 17, 2006 -> 08:56 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Crede and Garcia for A-Rod. Not Happening Contreras for Danks and Arias. Why? Danks and Fields for Crawford. Not happening Sign Iwamura to take over at 3rd base. No thank you on the Japanese imports for postional spots where they play everyday. How did Nakamura work out for the Dodgers? 5-6M for a few seasons? Total = About 24M-28M The thing is with this scenario though, our starters are basically down to Buehrle, Vazquez, Garland and B-Mac. So you'd have to sign a 5th starter or give it to a Lance Broadway or Charlie Haeger. Which would bring back the nightmares of the 2004 season. Pass.

Carlos isn't the best NL pitcher. Carpenter, Clemens (yes him,) and Webb are better pitchers than him.
-
Thome had an option year on his orignal contract. Vazquez is an entirely different situation becuase he demanded a trade.
-
Zambrano can't pitch when's there's a DH in the lineup. He likes to walk or bean guys to have the pitcher K with the bases loaded. I showed this to the nyyfans:

When Kerry uses a saying like "kill a bird with a stone," I don't think he is LITERALLY talking about MURDERING the President. His remarks are a lot different than Cindy's (who I think is off her Rocker.)
