Top 10 Outfield Options for 2007 in Free Agency
santo=dorf replied to RME JICO's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I rather not see us start two super young players everday in the OF. Eric Byrnes should be an option as well -
I think by moving Iguchi down in the lineup he will hit for more power increasing his SLG% and having an OPS > .800 For me the leadoff postion would be the LF platoon of Mack/Gload/Right handed hitter (Byrnes) #2 would be Omar Vizquel, or if push came to shove, Uribe (did well there in 2004.) Omar may not have a high enough SLG%, but he can bunt, steal bases, move along runners, and he tends to walk more than he strikes out.

QUOTE(gosox41 @ Sep 30, 2006 -> 06:26 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> 1. 3 bull pen spots are wide open as far as I'm concerned. 2. Back up catcher 3. SS- I know KW has faith in Uribe, but he is getting older and it's time to reach that potential. He regressed as a hitter this year. I like his D, but why should I be optimistic about his hiting. 4. Left Fielder-Pods doesn't cut it here. That's 6 players or 25% of the roster that could be improved. Bob I agree completely. Thome and Konerko both have NTC's, and Dye can't be traded after a MVP-like season only making $6 million
-
Get Iguchi lower in the order, don't put him at the very top.

Was our best hitter on the bench most of the year?

QUOTE(cgaudin @ Sep 30, 2006 -> 09:56 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No one held back this offense more than Jim Thome. We lost a high percentage of games against lefties because of this very fact. How many runs did Thome give up that day? -

QUOTE(beck72 @ Sep 30, 2006 -> 01:06 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Both are .300 hitters. Crisp broke his finger in May and played all yr with it. He should get back to his 2004 and 2005 #'s at the #2 hole. Get him while his stock is low. Crisp OBP 2004: .344 OBP .2005: .345 ....and he has never batted over .300. Juan Pierre is about to set the record for lowest BA with 200 hits in a season. He just doesn't get on base enough.
-
Pierre's and Crisp's OBP aren't that good, so how are they supposed to get on base for the big boppers?
-
Mack still looking good against RHP

Garza sucks. There I said it. I can only imagine the reaction of some of our posters if a Sox prospect when 2.2 IP, 8 H, 2 BB, 4 ER, and 3 K's (two off of someone like Brian Anderson)
-
QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Sep 30, 2006 -> 11:11 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> First opportunity I have to watch Garza for an entire game. I wouldn't have been confident regardless of the lineup, but with Konerko/Dye/Thome gone 10 strikeouts from Garza woudn't surprise me. Considering they aren't in the lineup I would be REALLY surprised. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Sep 30, 2006 -> 11:16 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> He can't. Let's see Fields vs. Garza. Best of both organizations right here. Fields doubles, but is stranded. Ground rule double saved a run. So who won that organizatiton battle? The Sox with Fields, or the Twins with the turf?

That particular one has the most focus because it was the first big study to come out (1992 IIRC) and it was put out by the EPA. The study is still referenced to when groups like the American Cancer Society talk about how many people die from second hand smoke. How come everyone who grew up in the 50's and 60's isn't dead or have lung cancer? People smoked everywhere. -
He made 3.4 million in 2005 and 3 million in 2006. There's a start.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Sep 30, 2006 -> 12:49 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> But, who honestly is a guy we can acquire who's actually a better value than Uribe, when taking everything into consideration (what we'd give up, the contract of the new guy). I know Rollins seems to be the God-child so far, but is he really a better value than Uribe, Fields, and Broadway (just a guess on the package)? Is he worth that, plus the couple million difference in salaries? Omar Vizquel will be making a little less than Uribe next season.

QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Sep 29, 2006 -> 11:05 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> He's pitched well in 3 of his last 4 starts. Big deal. We've been out of it for weeks now. When we needed him, like the rest of our rotation, he failed. That's f***ing bulls***. The Sox were still in before the Oakland series. We needed to win the Angels series and he nearly threw a perfect game during the rubber game. We were further out, but still in it, when we played Detroit, and he threw another one hitter. Garland and Vazquez also pitched great earlier in September, but the offensive wasn't there "when we needed them."

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 29, 2006 -> 12:12 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Heck there is still a flat earth society in exsistance who believe all of the lunar landings are faked and have "proof" to back them up. Actually they have an episode on that as well. Pretty good stuff QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 29, 2006 -> 12:12 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Personally I would tend to side with the vast majority of science and research on a project vs someone Penn and Teller dug up for ratings. Even if it was completely made up by scientists? The courts dismissed the whole study because it was faked. If they were doing the show just for ratings, why would they put it on SHOWTIME? Watch the show yourself, be objective, and make your own conclusions. I hate smoking, I don't like smelling like "the bar," but I don't like it when Governments control businesses and base it on pre-deteremined conclusions. -
QUOTE(greg775 @ Sep 29, 2006 -> 02:40 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> What if we traded Thome for big-time relief pitching. Signed Barry Bonds for one year to replace Thome. Traded for Griffey for prospects. Wouldn't that be wild stuff??? Just stop it. Trading guys with OPS's over 1.000 for BULLPEN arms is completely stupid. Thome isn't going to waive his NTC again after being back with his family I think the backlash of trading Thome to make a spot for Barry Bonds would be terrible (Why not just sign Bonds to replace Pods???) Griffey is still hurt We don't have an unlimited payroll. If we did, I'd rather get Tejada to replace Uribe instead of Griffey to replace Anderson.

In search of a new lead off hitter for next year

QUOTE(VAfan @ Sep 29, 2006 -> 01:47 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I don't think the Sox are done with Uribe, and I'm not sure they should be, given his 20+ dingers and 70+ RBI. (AJ, hitting behind the best 3 OBP guys we have, hasn't driven in that many runs, despite a .300 average most of the year.) Remember, it took a lot of years before Joe Crede finally did what he needed to do to become a solid offensive player. Uribe shows enough promise to suggest the Sox should hang in there with him too. And, until he gets it offensively, he's still a better defensive SS than we've had in a VERY long time. Uribe has to go. His OBP is killing the team. Finding a defensive SS with some bat is easier to find than a third baseman (who should hit for power) that plays gold glove defense. That's why Crede was given more time. Crede also won two MVP's in the minors with the Sox organization whereas Uribe was acquired from another organization that threw him around different positions and was known as a very streaky hitter. I don't see how the two can be compared QUOTE(VAfan @ Sep 29, 2006 -> 01:47 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> So, keep it simple. Keep Uribe, but replace Pods. Adding a RH DH to spell Thome against lefties and give him more rest, adding a RH catcher who can hit and/or play great defense (Stewart ready?), and adding a lefty CF who can field the position so we don't have to let BA sink us (Sweeney?), will also help. Jerry Owens????? No way. That guy isn't ever going be a major league regular. ***************** Edit: So far, I'm sticking with making a run at Soriano. If he demands to play 2B, I'd say we'll give him a chance to prove he can field the position once Tadahito plays out his contract. 11 pitchers 2 catchers (AJ and a guy who can hit and catch {so why would he come as a back up?}) 2 DH's (Thome and a guy like Perez of the Mariners) 2 First basemen (Gload and Konerko) 2 CF's (Anderson and ???) 1 RF (Dye) 1 LF (Mack) 1 3B (Crede) 2 2B (Iguchi and Soriano) 1 SS (Uribe) There's your roster right there. No backup at short, a weak back up option for 3rd (Mack,) and maybe 5 OF's if you count Soriano (who I guess wants to only be a second baseman.) Your scenario is very unrealistic and doesn't make much sense. -
QUOTE(longshot7 @ Sep 28, 2006 -> 05:36 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> people are so self-righteopus about this steroid issue. Geez folks, get over yourselves - like you've never cheated or sought an advantage on another person. What's that quote - "If you're not cheating, you're not trying"? I like "Win if you can, lose if you must, but always cheat, cheat, cheat." The guy is a lying asshole who plays the race card when he is questioned about. f*** him. I thnk the preception of Bonds here and among the MLB would be a lot different if he acted like Harold Baines while being on the juice.

So you have a problem with me agreeing with the scientists they interviewed, and you respond by quoting a guy who is disagreeing with scientists (on a completely different topic as well.) I don't follow you at all. I think Global Warming exists, but it's not as extreme as people think and won't have that much of an effect as some people are prediciting? Weren't there scientists back in the 1970's saying global warming would lead to an ice age? But now global warming wll lead us to burning to death? -
Plesac = Cub Cheerleader (he thought they would have a better record than us) I think there's a great chance Pierre will be back with the Cubs next season. That's probably why they didn't trade him at the deadline.

Yankees just to end the "when will the Yankees win their next title" talk littered throughout ESPN. Hell, maybe they'll try and push A-Rod out the door after winning it.

Giants are in bad shape. I thought there was an article on this awhile back, but guess their farm system is terrible, and in addition to Bonds and Schmidt, both Alous (Felipe has a team option,) Durham, Finley (team option for 7 million,) Steve Kline, Feliz (arb eligible???,) and Mike Stanton are all free agents. Matheny's career is probably over with the concussion, and Tim Worrell's career is likely over as well. The Giants are in some deep, deep s***. -

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Sep 28, 2006 -> 02:14 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> So you are campaigning that to win the World Series next year, a good idea would be to have our lead off man be 50 percent Mackowiak, and 50 percent Eric Byrnes, with a 40 year old SS thrown in there for good measure at the #2 guy. Helllllllllllloooooo 3rd place again. No, I don't want Mack and Byrnes getting even playing time, and I don't want one or the other in the lineup everday. Also, Omar Vizquel > Uribe. Have you bothered to look at Omar's production lately? The guy can still play, and he's a cheap option (which was brought up by Northsidesox72) -

I'm basing my opinion from Penn and Teller:Bulls*** (can't find the episode on google video now) where the first major study was thrown out by the courts because they determined the scientists pre-determined the results and cherry picked numbers to support their case. Groups still refer to this study and increase the number to scare people and link any deaths in a smoking household to second hand smoke.
