QUOTE(gosox41 @ Sep 15, 2006 -> 07:07 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> KC has been playing better lately. While not a good team, they're not the same team that sucked in April and May. Look at the tough time they gave Minnesota, Boston, and the Sox lately. Bob Thing is, Teahan is done for the year. Shealy has been picking it up nice lately. -
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Sep 15, 2006 -> 10:20 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Oh god, not a slightly off year!!!!!!!!! Give it up, the guy is good, better than anyone in our middle IF right now. And better than our lead off hitter. Look at the numbers, 2005 was the off year. 140 points is a HUGE dip. I should drop the "s" word like a lot of baseball fans are doing these days when a guy loses production. I already said Young is better than our current situation, but my point is it probably isn't going to worth paying the price to get this guy.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Sep 15, 2006 -> 09:44 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Thanks for showing his natural progression in the major leagues from being a back up type player to a great hitter. I love seeing stats that solidify that the player has pretty consistent improvement. ...and the 140 point dip in OPS this year? QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Sep 15, 2006 -> 09:44 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You have to remember, it's not like Young would be moving from a hitters park to a pitchers park if he was traded to us. Looks like he's suffered from what Texiera has this season as well, hitting less HR's but more doubles. His GPA has decreased from .288 to .254 this season, so maybe Texas could actually be open to dealing him. He's been hitting .381 with RISP as well FWIW. I knew someone was going to bring this up, but I left it out just because I wanted some one to actually write it. Is the Ballpark in Arlington like USCF? More importantly, let's say he does hit at USCF like his does as Arlington. Why would we want a guy to have a .320ish OBP and low .400 SLG for the other 81 games of the season? This would be an improvement over the guy we currently have, but Texas could be asking for a lot in return because his overall numbers look good, but the stats show it's due to Arlington. Texas Individual road stats Texas Individual Home stats With the exception of Teixeira, ALL of the regular Rangers have a noticable drop in production between home and road. That's not a coincidence.
-
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Sep 15, 2006 -> 09:15 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Eh, with a hitter like Michael Young I think those stats are more coincidental then not. Not to mention the same argument seemed to be made against Soriano when Nats traded for the guy. How can they be conicidental? I used almost a six year span. Soriano was also in a contract year and is in the NL. ...and in case anyone is wondering about Blalock because he had this discussion in the offseason, he sitll can't hit LHP, away, or in the second half.
-
Young is not that good defensively at SS and is better suited for second. Road splits: 2006: .285/.329/.415 .743 OPS 2005: .330/.384/.500 .884 OPS 2004: .280/.320/.460 .779 OPS 2003: .262/.291/.367 .658 OPS 2002: .245/.287/.359 .646 OPS 2001: .227/.263/.345 .609 OPS I'll pass.

QUOTE(whitesoxin @ Sep 14, 2006 -> 10:54 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> On a side note, why isn't the division clinching game from last year on the list? He pitched great that game. Because Freddy isn't a big game pitcher I tried to get some 2004 moments in there as well just as a refresher. The mlb.com lists Buehrle as the winner in the 05 results page, but here was Garcia's line: 7 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K's Man, Inge killed us that day.

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 14, 2006 -> 09:15 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> 7-4 now. I still laugh at people who said Hunter wouldn't be an offensive upgrade over Anderson this season. Who said that? He's definately an upgrade, but he's not worth the price. Early Spring training continues in Cleveland.

QUOTE(TLAK @ Sep 14, 2006 -> 08:46 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> 5 years $60 million guaranteed may also have been a factor in Konerko signing. Never believe ball players, its about the money. These guys have a short period of time to set up their families for generations to come. The LA offer was supposedly equal, the Baltimore one supposedly a little above but what doesn't make the newpapers is the terms of the deals and how they impact the real value of an offer to the player. I can't believe a player is going to turn down a superior offer just because he likes the guys. I call BS on that argument. Baltimore offered 5 years $65 million, an 8.333% increase. Konerko even said he was close to signing with the Angels, but the Thome showed him the Sox were dead serious about repeating. Of course the Thome deal to Konerko could have also meant it was the final nail in the coffin for Frank with the Sox. Do you think Konerko would've re-signed with the Sox if Frank was brought back? Would you rather have Thome-Konerko-Anderson, or Thomas-Rowand-Gload?

Jason Michaels is not an everyday player. He f***ing sucks. Where's that .390 OBP? Oh right, he's already had well over 250 at-bats.
-
QUOTE(kevo880 @ Sep 14, 2006 -> 05:51 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> we need a leadoff hitter somehow I'd rather not go the "recklessly spend $35 million and trade away players" for a guy who tends to hit like Pods for the first half. Put the name aside for a second, and look at the number. Not just his career numbers, but his salary. The guy isn't worth it. His away stats suck, he's always been in the NL, and he isn't the only option available (WHO KNOWS IF HE EVEN IS???) to replace our current weak hitting shortstop or our s***ty leadoff hitter. I think I have made my point very clear regarding Rollins.
-
Pods' OBP was .353, not .330. He actually had a higher OPS. Like I said, show me how trading players and or prospects and throwing $35 million at a guy to be a major offensive upgrade (although it's still not good enough especially if he plays worse than Pods in the first half of 2006) and a minor defensive downgrade makes sense. I'd much rather throw $35 million and trade players for a new LF and keep Uribe. The offensive upgrade would be much better (from a sub .700 OPS to a .850-.950 OPS) and we would still have great D at short. Who says Rollins is available? Hell, mine as well try to get this one answered as well since I brought up LF. Who says Carl Crawford is available?
-
QUOTE(BearSox @ Sep 14, 2006 -> 05:37 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Rollins plays top notch D though. And even though .330 isn't that high, it is still better then pods. And he can hit for some power at least. Omar Vizquel is a better defender, gets on base more, and puts the ball in play. He is also a product of the American league. I'm still not convinced Pods + top notch D is worth $35 million +trading players/prospects.
-
QUOTE(kevo880 @ Sep 14, 2006 -> 05:29 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> who are you talking about? Jimmy Rollins. Looking at it some more, Rollins' career line is about par with Pods' first half this season, which wasn't that good to begin with. Rollins has the edge with SLG%, but OBP% is more important for a top of the order hitter. Why would anyone want to guaranteed $35 million to a 2006, not 2005, first half Podsednik?

signed deal for 2005 season worth 3.85M on 1/18/05- + he can earn award bonuses- + later signed 5-year EXTENSION worth 40M thru 2010 season on 6/13/05- + he receives a 5M signing bonus that is payable in installments of 1M in July of each year of the deal- + he receives salaries of 4M in 2006, 7M in both 2007 and 2008, and then 7.5M in both 2009 and 2010- + the deal includes a Team Option for the 2011 season worth 8.5M or a 2M buyout- + bonuses he has earned: 75K for 2005 All-Star selection Agent: Dan Lozano 8 M in 2007 8 M in 2008 8.5 M in 2009 8.5 M in 2010 + another 2 million guaranteed. Sure is a lot for a guy with a career OBP of .330. You also have to factor in the players we would have to give up, and who says he is on the market anyways? Old or not, I'd much rather get Omar Vizquel unless Tejada really pisses of the Orioles managment further.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Sep 14, 2006 -> 05:12 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well at least today Freddy Garcia showed he will certainly still have value, especially if teams that acquire him think that he will get his velocity back, and I actually think there's a good chance of that happening. Just don't let him pitch in the World Baseball Classic this time. The WBC is not an annual event.

I have to admit, this sub-title made me chuckle for some time. He also hit for the cycle in order. Good to see Grilli getting grilled too. 10-3 Rangers

1. Garcia flirts with a no-hitter until Sox Killer Jacque Jones leads off the 8th inning with a Solo homer. Freddy and the Sox lose to Johan Santana and the Twins 1-0. 8 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K's 16 Ground ball outs. 2. Freddy Garcia flirts with a perfect game until scrappy Adam Kennedy hits a soft liner into centerfield with two outs in the 8th. 8 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 K's 3. The Sox win their second game out of their last SEVENTEEN in Oakland behind the strong effort of Freddy. The game ended when Shingo Takatsu snared Adam Melhuse's liner at chest level giving future Royals' All-Star, Mark Redman, the loss. 6.2 IP, 2 ER, 2 H, 2 BB, 6 K's 4. After surrendering a first inning 3-run homer to Brad Hawpe, "First inning Freddy" looked to be in full effect. Garcia went on to set a Coors Field record by retiring the next 22 consecutive batters. The same Rockies announcers who witnessed Hideo Nomo's no-hitter Colorado called Garcia's performance "the most dominating performancing they have ever seen at Coors Field." 8 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 10 K's 5. Karma comes back to Freddy Garica as he overcame the lack of run support by the Sox and outdueled Anthony Reyes. Sox win 1-0 on "unclutch" Jim Thome's 7th inning homer. The only Sox hit. 8 IP, 0 ER, 4 H, 1 BB, 2 K's, 14 GB outs. 6. Twenty-four hours after Mark Buehrle faced the minimum 27 batters in a two-hitter, Garcia shut down on of baseball's best-hitting lineups over the past two weeks. Freddy Garcia's strong shutout seven innings help the Sox defeat C.C "Needsa" Sabathia (yes, we've actually beaten him before.) The highlight of the game was one of Ozzie's first of many screwups when he came out to bring in lefty Damaso Marte to face left-hander Travis Hafner. First base umpire Joe West thought Guillen was signaling with his right hand, and West walked to the bullpen to escort right-hander Cliff Politte to the mound instead. "I screwed it up," admitted Guillen, who only briefly argued his point with West. "I used my right hand. So I told him, 'Bring me what you want." 7 IP, 0 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 9 K's 7. Garcia continues to haunt the Angels as the White Sox became the first team to pitch three straight complete games in the postseason since the New York Mets' Tom Seaver, Jon Matlack and Jerry Koosman in the first three games of the 1973 NLCS against Cincinnati. 9 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 5 K's. 8. Freddy Garcia pitches out of a tough 6th inning jam and pitches 7 shutout innings leaing the Sox to their first World Series title in 88 years. 7 IP, 0 ER, 4 H, 3 BB, 7 K's Ok, the answer is pretty obvious, but I thought this would make a good read until the next game late Friday night.

Had Freddy pulled it off, I'm pretty sure it would've been only the third perfect game televised on National TV. Not sure if that Yankees World Series game was on TV.
