  1. QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ Nov 19, 2006 -> 02:35 PM) So he's going to convince the Trib to throw him another $100 million to get Zito or Schmidt? s***, they've probably tapped out all of their reserves given to them, and they're offering Matthews or Pierre $10 million a year. I'm guessing its gonna be more along the likes of a Jason Marquis and Gil Meche type of pitcher.

Andy: "I'm always a step ahead. I'm like a carpenter...who works on stairs." By the way, is it just me or has Creed been extra freaky this season? His reaction to the woman using the breast pump had me rolling on the floor. "Right place at the right time."
  3. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 01:01 PM) The funny thing is over on nsbb they think that Cotts is the answer to their starter woes. Wait till the wind blows out, and Mr. one pitch is gooving fastballs down the cock. But then again, the twits in the stands who follow that rubish they call a team will be good and drunk by that point. At this point in his career, without at least a developed second pitch, the notion of Cotts as a starter is quite comical. I cringed every time it was brought up when he was here.
  4. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 12:14 PM) No, not at all. I was one of the first on this site during the season last year that said he would be gone. I just thought that we'd use him as a bigger piece of a trade, and I thought we'd be more active in the FA market than it seems we are. When I read on Buster Olney's blog that Justin Speier might cost $12 million to $15 million, that basically told me that we weren't gonna go the free agent route, and we were going to have to get creative in solving our middle relief problem. Not sure how Aardsma plays into this, but as far as I'm concerned, the situation is no better, and no worse.
  5. QUOTE(daa84 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 11:40 AM) hes a righty Yah, I just realized that. Silly me.
  6. I may be wrong here, but from reading the scouting report, I'm guessing that Coop feels like Aardsma has the tools that can make him a "Matt Thornton" type project. Hard throwing lefty with iffy mechanics and control problems. Sounds familiar.
  7. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 11:23 AM) He's still a relatively young, cheap lefty reliever who is a year away from one of the best relief seasons in the league. Maybe with a better pitching coach, he'll develop something more than a 91 mph fastball and nothing else. Meh. They seem like the same pitcher to me. Rely heavily on 1 pitch. About the same K/BB ratio. Around the same age. A little wild. I wouldn't want to count on either next year. I'd call it a wash, but I've never been a big Cotts fan to begin with. He had a great 2005...but then again, so did Cliff Politte.
  8. Am I the only guy who noticed that the Padres got a guy named "Ring" and a guy named "Bell", or am I just the only guy who thinks its worthy of anybody's attention?

QUOTE(SoxFan76 @ Nov 12, 2006 -> 06:44 PM) And I don't believe that other guy from Stanford is going to Scranton. They showed him in the break room freaking out when he found out the Stanford branch was closing. I'll miss the creator of Big Tuna. haha The article in the Trib seems to imply that he (Ed Helms' character) will be coming to Scranton. Office Spoiler
  10. QUOTE(Jimbo @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 11:09 AM) Their sources is one person....what is he like the drunk at the hotel bar.... I thought that was weird as well. But somebody said it, and apparently he was important enough to use as a source for his article. Maybe it was my mailman.
  11. Didn't see this posted anywhere. From SI.com... http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writ...ed.scoop/2.html
  12. They are certainly the worst team in recent memory to win a World Series, but I see no reason for MLB to be embarrassed. Frankly, I prefer it this way. Remember all the talk about the lack of parity in the league when the big payroll teams like the Yankees were winning championships every year? I'm glad that there is the potential for a major surprise every season. I'm glad that more teams (yes, even the "not-so-great" teams) have a chance to win it all. And I like the idea that its open season for any team that is fortunate to make the playoffs. There is nothing wrong with sliding into the playoffs and rising to the occasion when it counts the most. I'm a little pissed off that the Sox couldn't put the pieces together and make the playoffs, especially when this years playoffs have shown me that the Sox would have had as good a shot as anybody had they made it. But that is our problem. Unfortunately, we sit at home watching another team take advantage of the opportunity. Yes, the Cardinals owe a lot to the watered down National League. And what many people don't talk about was how the level of quality of both leagues in general appeared to be down this year. Regardless, the Cardinals have absolutely nothing to apologize for, and neither does baseball. As far as I'm concerned, a year that goes by the Yankees or the Red Sox didn't win the championship courtesy of their deep wallets is a victory for Major League Baseball. Maybe I'm completely off base here, but I like the fact that a team like the Cardinals can win the title. The more teams that feel like they have a chance to win the title, the better. This philosophy seems to have worked for the NFL.
  13. Caught (kinda) 2 batting practice balls. One was in the bleachers at Wrigley, when the immortal Chuck Carr of the Marlins simply tossed one up there for us. The other was my one and only game at Camden Yards in Baltimore. We were driving to the game from my sisters place by Philly, and during the car ride, my brother-in-law asked what the ruling is if a player catches a flyball in his hat...and if anybody has ever tried. Of course, none of us knew, but that was besides the point. So we get to the game, and we are watching the DRays take batting practice while standing behind that big scoreboard/wall in right field, and sure enough, Ben Grieve drives one our way. And as I was standing directly underneath it, my dumbass brother-in-law sticks his hat out and snatches the ball. Fortunately for me, the ball knocked his hat out of his hand but miraculously stayed in the hat. I picked the ball out of the hat and the rest is history. Kind of a cheap way to score a baseball, but whatever. The question still remains...is there a rule regarding catching a fly ball in your hat? My friend tried to convince us that it would be a ground-rule triple, which I'm pretty sure is bulls***.
  14. Hernandez has been crap for a while now. The one guy I worried about this series was the guy we saw tonight, being a soft-tossing lefty and all. Any word on who the Royals starter for the finale will be?
  15. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 08:17 PM) And if Sweeney comes up late in the game with men on? JUST WALK HIM. Absolutely. Even with a runner on first. If I were to judge Mike Sweeney based only on the games I've seen him play against us, I'd have to say that he is the greatest hitter in the history of baseball. I seriously hope we stop pitching to this guy.
  16. While we certainly benefited from the sloppy Detroit defense today, this game and our previous wins have been really encouraging. One of the biggest keys to our success last year was our ability to capitalize on mistakes. Our play over the past week, and especially today's game, has 2005 written all over it.
  17. Good pitching makes me happy. Lets hope its contagious.
  18. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 31, 2006 -> 04:56 PM) I dont think Cheat will have a problem with me posting this... Sums up my feelings to a tee... Sums it up for me too. Well done Cheat. There wasn't a pitcher out there that was traded today that would have been a significant upgrade over what we currently have, or at least a starter that was worth giving up good talent for. The one move that I was counting on Kenny to make was either a fourth OF, or a replacement for Pods all together. With that said, even if we did add another outfielder, I really doubt said player would have been the difference between us winning another title or not. Our fate rests on our starting pitching getting their act together. This would be the case no matter what move Kenny made.
  19. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 31, 2006 -> 02:20 PM) It seems that everyone in baseball has figured out that Vazquez is overrated. I still don't think we'll be able to get rid of him in the offseason without having to take very little in return. You're probably right. Our only hope would be a team that thinks they can fix him. But the biggest strike against him probably isn't his current struggles, but the fact that he's on his third team in 4 years. I mean, what can be done to help him that hasn't already been tried by three different organizations?
  20. QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Jul 31, 2006 -> 02:07 PM) Ozzie plays favorites and will go out of his way by making ridiculous managerial decisions for some of his guys. See 2005: Timo at 1B. And of course you have proof of this? Damaso Marte, who was definitely NOT one of Ozzie's guys, would be thrown out there time and time again in big situations. Ozzie tries to play everybody on a consistant basis. Whether its smart or not is a different argument, but saying that he plays favorites at the expense of the team winning games just sounds like conspiracy B.S.
  21. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 31, 2006 -> 02:00 PM) And that's one of the things that pisses me off. He's more concerned with being everyone's buddy instead of doing what's right for the team. 1 hour. Concerned about being everybody's buddy? Tell that to Sean Tracey and Jon Garland. I have a problem with some of his lineup and defensive choices as well, but I doubt he does what he does to be nice to everybody.
  22. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 04:50 PM) What? Are you serious? KW didn't do that, just FYI. Yah, I remember reading that. Totally forgot about Schueler's involvement on that one.
  23. I'd say his worst trade would have to be that Todd Ritchie trade...and that isn't even looking that bad anymore since Wells and Fogg really haven't developed into anything special.
  24. ESPN fires Reynolds Thread about it here.
