2007 Post ASB White Sox Catch-All Thread
QUOTE(Brian @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 10:13 AM) Any word on if Toby Hall had or will have his surgery this offseason? I'm 99% sure that answer is no. He rehabbed instead and will not have the surgery unless he reinjures the arm.

Edgar Renteria traded to the Tigers
QUOTE(fathom @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 01:55 PM) It would have to be a damn good prospect, and unfortunately, we only have two of those. Like what I said about Garland, you can't trade DLS or Gio for a one year contract. Carter is considered a damn good prospect, so there is at least 3 in the Sox system. Poreda (who is untradeable right now as he was drafted this past year) is also very highly thought of.

Edgar Renteria traded to the Tigers
QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 01:48 PM) The Braves site says Renteria is due to become a free agent after this coming season (2008). If that is true, Detroit is giving up two talented young players for a rental. The CF prospect is extremely highly regarded. What this speaks to, as much as anything, is the Tigers drafting. They take CF prospects just about every year, just as the Phillies do. Speedy 4/5 tool CF prospects can net just about anything you want in trade. They still have Maybin so this kid was a tradeable asset. Not to be a downer but meanwhile the White Sox sit with Brian Anderson, who might fetch a middle relief prospect at best. All we can do is hope the new scouting direction will give the White Sox more results. It also speaks to Atlanta's scouting and development because I believe they've got someone ready to step in. The Braves have multiple guys ready step in at SS. In fact they have already gotten pretty good production out of at least one of thoes guys (Yunel Escobar) down the stretch last season.

Edgar Renteria traded to the Tigers
I would have preferred Renteria to Tejada. Simply put I think Tejada is more likely to break down, plus I don't care much about power as I think the sox still have plenty of pop in there lineup. I'm more concerned with the table setters. Furcal is still my top choice, especially if he could be had for prospects not named Gio/DSL/Carter. The Sox obviously could also offer a veteran starter, but if they add Arod they probably wouldn't want to add a starter that makes much money.

Report: Yankees move on Girardi
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 10:47 AM) The Dodgers could turn into the Yanks/Red Sox cast off team. If Torre/Don make there way to LA, does A-Rod follow??? They could really use a power bat and with all the other young players already in their lineup they could very easily afford to add Arod's large contract without having a ridiculous payroll (plus in LA they have a large stadium and generate good revenue). I think the Dodgers could do this while moving both Pierre/Furcal (they have younger alternatives at both of those positions).

Edgar Renteria traded to the Tigers
Very interesting . Are either of those prospects considered A prospects? Jurjens has a pretty good arm, but I don't think he grades out as an A prospect (unless he's considered super projectable and that could be the case as I'm not fully up to date on Tigers prospects). He's also relatively young for his age (21 and has already pitched in 7 major league games). Gorky's is an extremely young outfielder with a ton of speed and decent numbers in his first full season. He doesn't hit for much power and the only way he'd amount to being an A level prospect is if he is very projectable with scouts thinking his power numbers would really take off. This seems like a pretty good overall move for the Tigers. The Braves are getting some solid spects but nothing top notch (like i said, I could be off as I'm not a genius when it comes to the Tigers system). I am guessing a similar package from the Sox would have probably taken an extra prospect but it could have been done without giving up Gio/DLS. Broadway/McCulloch/Egbert could have been the pitcher (note that I think none of them are as good as the pitching prospect the Tigers gave up) with Carter potentially being the other piece (he is better than the other prospect). I also could imagine the Sox could maybe find a way to give up a combo of pitching prospects not named Gio/DLS and a lesser position prospect.

Random Garland Trade Idea.
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 01:03 PM) How about jason bay as a possible candidate for trade aquisition. He had a down year, but has put up monster numbers in his two previous seasons. It is believed that the Pirates will look to unload him. I've been a big fan of Bay, but I really think the Sox have enough sluggers in the middle. The only way I really think getting new sluggers make sense (such as Bay or even Arod) is if they plan on moving out some of there older sluggers for more athletic, younger sluggers. I'm all for this plan as I think the Sox should have moved away from Konerko/Dye/Thome and found a way to get younger in the offensive core. Guys like Bay would be perfect fits like that while you work on grooming Fields into developing into a core player as well. I also feel that Arod would really fit in well to this, especially if you were able to use Konerko/Dye/Thome to get other young sluggers that could develop into core players (guys that are better already than Fields with lots of potential...Bay could be one of those guys, but obviously he already has a salary which makes it harder to fit Arod in). Unfortunately Dye is resigned now and Thome doesn't seem to be going anywhere so Konerko is the only option of who they would move and in all honesty Konerko is the one that figures to stay solid for longer than the other two (just my opinion and I think you could make a case that Dye would hold up as well but I think in general Paulie is the better offensive player).

Arod Opts Out
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 10:52 AM) LMAO at the Yankees "rebuilding" being an excuse for opting out. Even if Posada, Rivera et al, do not return, does anyone think the Yankees won't go out and spend that money on other players? I see the Yankees making a move after Johan Santana right now. They could put together an offer of Wang, Cano, and another one of the young pitchers, and still have the cash to extend Santana easily. Apparently it was based on what Hal Steinbrenner said. I think the Yanks do plan on rebuilding a bit. Hell they started rebuilding a couple years back when they put a much bigger commitment on there farm system. However, the definition of rebuilding to the Yanks/Red Sox is different than that of 95% of the major league. The Yanks are really going to be a rock solid club (with a winning mixture of youth & vets). Hughes/Kennedy/Joba all look like guys that are projectable. Melky/Cano are both quality young players and they have another class of youngsters coming up. They will also have a lot of contracts coming off the books (some pretty nasty ones) which will allow them to go out and get new, potentially younger guys.

Crede cleared for baseball activity
QUOTE(joeynach @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 12:59 PM) They need to figure out if Fields is the 3B or not. He has 35-40 hr potential for next year given 600 ABs. He is going to kill you anywhere you put him, including LF. He will be best served either playing average defense at 3rd or being a DH, but it seems both those positions are filled. Your are going to kill your def and pitching staff if you play fields 162 games in left next year. If you could get a quality player in return that files an immediate hole now I would do it. Say Fields+Prospects for Tejada. Fields is a pretty good athlete and I fully expect him to be able to turn into an above average left fielder. I realize there will be growing pains with him as he hasn't ever played the outfield on a regular basis but he will get over them with experience out there. Hell, he will be at least a league average defensive 3rd baseman (with the ability to be better than league average). He just won't be a gold glover and thats something a lot of people have came to expect with Crede playing over at 3rd for the past half decade.

Report: Yankees move on Girardi
It doesn't shock me. Don was loyal to Torre and at first it didn't even sound like he was going to go for the job after the way the Yanks ran Joe out of town (he was expected to step in when Joe eventually retired). I'm sure Don will either get a managerial job or make way to LA where he will join Torre's staff once again (after he gets hired by the Dodgers).

Arod Opts Out
I'd immediately buy an Arod jersey if he signed. The guy is amazing. I just hope Kenny would be able to put a quality team around him.

Arod Opts Out
QUOTE(PHAT ALBERT @ Oct 28, 2007 -> 08:06 PM) Must already know he has $30m times eight or nine elsewhere.... I don't think he would have gotten that much. ESPN is saying it is because Arod was concerned that the yanks were going to go into a rebuilding type of phase (with Mariano, Jorge, and others being gone). I figure he just doesn't want to play in New York.

Arod Opts Out
This probably means he is done in New York.

Man, I just finished looking at this years FA list and I forgot just how horrible the class is. It seems like it has been a few years since there were a decent amount of quality players available via FA. I'm just going to hope some quality players get DFA'd cause there ain't crap out there that I want to sign (unless you are talking about the CFer crop or Alexi Ramirez/Fukodome). I don't mind those guys, but the Sox are going to have to make some solid trades if they plan on changing the team a bit (along with maybe being able to find a quality player or two that gets DFA'd).

Are the Rockies planning on resigning Kazuo Matsui. He has put up very good numbers since going to Colorado (it could just be because he's in Colorado though) and could be a guy that plays a ton at 2nd while also getting time at SS in a pinch. He has good speed (30 plus steals this past season) and seems to finally be adjusting to major league play. Note: I don't think he's a star by all means and he may get paid too much (possibly by the Rox thanks to his great post-season play), but if you are talking a few mill than he'd be a guy worth going after.

Kobe To the Bulls Rumors
No way I make that trade. I think I could live with Gordon/Deng and next years first. If they than insisted on one of Noah/Thomas I may bite. Hinrich/Kobe/Nocioni/Tyrus Thomas/Ben Wallace

Barry Rozner on ARod / White Sox
The talk is that Arod is going to be offered a 5 year extension from the Yanks that will be around the 30M per year range. It would also make Arod signed for the next 8 seasons in New York (till he's 40). No way will the Sox make an 8 year offer to him. I could see them going 5 years 150M, but not 8YRs 200+.

Crede cleared for baseball activity
Getting Joe back will be huge for this team. Joe is a defensive god and offensively I think we will see him produce similar to his 2006 season (yes I have blind optimism when it comes to Crede). Plus it means Fields moves to LF so we gain production in LF and defense at 3rd. The only real thing I doubt when it comes to Joe is the ability for him to post an average to above average OBP (if he could do that I'd be all for signing him to an extension early next year). Still, if they could get him to agree to a 3 yr deal at like 6 mill a year I'd do it.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Oct 27, 2007 -> 12:43 PM) I thought Giles was the bargain of the last off-season.... Oops He wasn't the worst spent money of last of-season, but woah was he bad... I was thinking the same thing when the Pads signed him. I still wouldn't have a problem with the Sox picking him up to a one year deal worth 750K -1.5M with some incentives if he is decent and starts that he would make a bit more. He has had good years and obviously is coming off two straight down seasons but he is solid defensively and has shown if he can hit for any sort of an average that he will post good periphs (OBP and a solid OPS for a 2nd baseman). I think he'd be a good guy to help push Richar.
