QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 09:39 AM) Out of Beato or Perez who do you like. Perez would be great in the pen for quick to the majors. I just dont like drafting guys who are already in the pen in college. Yes it worked out for Houston Street and Cordero a bit. I am also a fan of the heavy sinker especially with our ballpark. Its not even close, Beato. He is so much better talent wise than Tillman or Perez, but I have my doubts as to whether Beato will be there @ 29. If he is and we pass him for either of the two guys mentioned than I think it would be a mistake (obviously there could be other guys available that are better since who knows what will happen). I merged the thread from the FutureSox forum into this one.

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 09:38 AM) Like I said....the Cubs BTW....who does BA project Drabek going to right now? To the Dodgers @ 7
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 09:27 AM) Nope....it sounds like he has some serious problems. The Drabek team has been going out of their way to keep things hush-hush, and I've actually been told to keep things quiet that I've heard from my source. It will be interesting to see how far down he drops. Drabek is going to have to go to the type of team that will just flat out take a chance. He has top 10 talent, but with all the other stuff surrounding him he could drastically fall (even out of the 1st round; although I am hard-pressed to see it happening). A small-to-mid market team will not be taking him. By the way, what do you guys think of me just merging this with the draft thread. That way we can all continue this discussion in the same thread.

Baseball America Has Sox Interested In These 3 Players By Jason Gage FutureSox.com With the draft less than an hour away, Baseball America has released and updated mock draft and apparently the White Sox have shown interest in potentially selecting one of Chris Perez (RHP), Pedro Beato (RHP), and Chris Tillman (RHP). THe Sox hold the 29th overall selection and if available Beato would represent a tremendous value pick. Here are some short scouting reports on each player: RHP Chris Perez (MIAMI) Perez is a junior at the University of Miami who has pitched as a starter and reliever and is now the Canes closer. He was suspended for part of a season after being arrested for Drunk Driving (was not convicted). Perez is 6-4 and has seen his velocity climb into the mid 90's. He mixes his FB (which he has poor control of) with a very good breaking slider thats in the mid 80's. Has had bouts with putting on weight, but he does do a good job repeating his delivery. RHP Pedro Beato (St. Petersburg JC) Beato was originally drafted by the Mets last year in the 17th round. He was a highly touted prospect who fell as he was returning from tommy john surgery (had it during his junior year of high school). Beato came back and found his stuff. Throws a fastball with good sinking action (90) and has been clocked as hard as 96. Mixes that in with a hard slider (mid 80's), curve and a changeup. Beato would need to work on smoothening out his mechanics, but the guy has a big frame (6-5). Chris Tillman, RHP - Fountain Valley High School (CAL) Tillman is a 6-6 pitcher with a big frame thats very projectable. He's comitted to Cal State Fullerton for college and is expected to go as early as the end of the 1st round or as late as the end of the 2nd round. He's a more raw guy who loses his stuff as the game goes on and some wonder if he's just cruising, but he only has 2 picthes at this point and is seeking a 3rd pitch. This is the type of player that is more of a project and a team that takes him would really be projecting him (ie expecting him to really develop). The type of guy that could really benefit from going to a place like Cal State Fullerton. However, scouts like him enough that he'll go early enough to where he'll probably forego college.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 09:28 AM) Beato would be interesting due to his heavy sinker. The only drawback is he is coming from TJ Surgery. Chris Perez was a starter who was changed to a closer after an injury. I dont know anything about Chris Tillman. What kind of stuff does he have. Fastball speed? Tillman throws 90-94, but later in games he has been known to slip into the upper 80's. A team that takes him wouldn't be taking him for what he's done in high school (especially not this year, he was on a bad team though). They would be taking him for his body size and the stuff he ocassionally flashes. A true project and I am not a fan of taking him.

QUOTE(daa84 @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 09:04 AM) Baseball America said in the blog that it sounds like the Royals will announce Hochevar as the #1 overall....I wonder how far miller falls The Rockies appear to be close to taking Reynolds at 2, which would be a surprise since for a long time it sounded like they were willing to take Miller (top pitching prospect). or Longoria (top position player in the draft). Hochevar pick is the rare instance where a Boras pick is actually a signability pick
-
Interesting, Reynolds (RHP out of Stanford) is now showing up on a few mocks as a 2nd overall pick to the Rockies. This is a guy that wasn't expected to go where he was, so a team that wasn't expecting Longoria or Miller or Linnecum could get them to fall into there laps.
-
BA appears to think the Cards are going to load up on Boras clients (high ceiling guys too) if they get the chance. They now have Shcerzer sliding to them at 30 (past us; this would be the type of guy that if he fell, it would be worth taking a chance on trying to negotiate a 3 million buck contract). They also have Kennedy going to the Cards in the supplemental round. Kennedy probably hurt his stock as much as any projected top pick as he was a top 10 pick at the start of the year (if not a top 4 or 5 pick) but like Scherzer he struggled with consistency this year and some scouts have doubts about his smaller stature. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 09:06 AM) JimH, do you really think Beato even makes it to #29? I think BA has ranked him 13th overall or something like that. His stuff sounds electric, and if he does happen to slide all the way down to #29, you have to take him, no question. BTW -- Cheat talked about this on his blog, but I'm pissed that MLB is now making 'recommendations' as to what kind of money to give to Draft-and-Follows. The D-&-F system sounded like one where, if you played your cards right, you could grab some high-round talent without necessarily having top picks. Draft and Follow works good, but you often times have to give up a ton of money. MLB will get mad at you if you do so, but teams do it all the time. MLB just gives a suggestion. Draft and Follows can be good if you take a guy who was high ceiling, got hurt, and will be pitching for a JC the next year or rehabbing. Also for a guy you have an eye on but that hasn't yet taken off (you may be able to wait and see in a sense).

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 09:02 AM) I'm interested to see if the Sox go the college closer route for a guy that could possibly help them this year. I was really hoping for that, but it doesn't seem like that type of guy is available early on. You don't have a Huston Street or Chad Cordero out there.
-
Its getting closer.

This thread will be pinned later today.

Tillman is a stud as well and is comitted to Cal State Fullerton, but the right money would obviously change all that. I Like the sounds of the main guys the Sox are apparently looking at.

QUOTE(My Dixie Normus @ Jun 5, 2006 -> 08:41 PM) Dustin Hermanson is still listed on the disabled list. He is still officially on the 40-man roster. Has anyone heard any news recently on his progress? Should he just be counted out totally or does he just go to the same doctors that Mark Prior does? If he gets back at all, will he be worth a crap after this long of a lay off? A while back I saw where he was throwing down in extended spring training, but he was still in a lot of pain. I think its realistic to expect him to announce his retirement, however, it would be excellent if he was able to come back healthy (but I really don't think that will happen).

QUOTE(Spiff @ Jun 5, 2006 -> 10:27 PM) Here's your series preview: both teams have been playing like absolute s*** as of late. The Tigers can't pitch, the White Sox forgot how to catch the ball. A week and a half ago, I thought these two would meet in the ALCS, they've certainly come back down to earth. Because the Sox seem to own Detroit lately, I'll say they take two of three, but this baseball needs to stop. SOXTALK NEEDS MORE SPIFF AND THIS IS WHY

QUOTE(danman31 @ Jun 5, 2006 -> 06:49 PM) Let's do it Jason! The Tigers won 8-3 today without Scherzer pitching at all. Scherzer and Culp will get the first two games in Fullerton. Enjoy. Its going to be good times. Scherzer vs Roemer potentially on Friday.
-
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jun 5, 2006 -> 09:33 PM) Yeah. you've got some players, like Carl Everett and John Smoltz, who are on record as saying they'd hate to play on the same team as homosexuals. Indeed, I believe Smoltz said he wouldn't, and Carl promised to convert them to Jesus, so... Thats there problem, but players like that (mixed with a vast number of people that feel the same way) are the reason you won't have an openly gay player for a while (unless he's really ballsy). I'm with whoever said as long as they hit and play good baseball who gives a crap.
-
QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jun 5, 2006 -> 08:59 PM) You would know about Scherzer's eyes. People may get to see one hell of a matchup this weekend when Scherzer locks down (potentially) with Wes Roemer of Fullerton. Wes is our ace and while he doesn't have the stuff he has some of the best control that the collegiate level has seen (he's pretty much always around the zone).
-
I don't like the fact that we are playing 2 lefties in this series.
-
I don't know of any major league player that is openly gay, but I'd assume there are some that won't tell it and I'm not about to speculate on it. Its there business and they are entitled to do what they want.

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jun 5, 2006 -> 02:57 PM) Perhaps we can get Hawk Harrelson to write up the next one. Can you imagine how that would look? MERCY

Aced means something like 95 or higher

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 5, 2006 -> 02:04 PM) The rest of your points I thought were garbage IMO, as every team isnt looking to help us out by trading their starting OF'ers. But I agree with this point. BA is a better hitter against RHP, so why the f*** are we only playing him against LHP? My theory is the Rangers are going to look to put themselves over the top. To do so they will need to acquire a legit front of the rotation starter (the guys they have won't cut it and the Angels may have actually gotten things figured out thanks to the emergence of some youngsters, plus they may get Colon back in a week; I say may because his velocity was down in his first rehab start). To do so it would have to be a 3 team deal and I'm not saying we can get Sarge Jr, but he's an option. Patterso n is an option. Just cause a team is in 1st right now doesn't mean they will be at the trade deadline and the Rangers have a glut of hitters (and outfielders for that matter). As far as Anderson goes, the whole situation is stupid. He should be playing everyday, he makes up for his lack of a bat with his defense (compared to Mack or Pods in CF). If we had an average CF on the club, I would say otherwise, but we don't. This team is built on pitching and defense and thus far the starting has had some problems with consistency and the pen has obviously been eh, but we've lost more games on bad defense than we have with our horrid pen. Having this rotation of CF's is really effecting the chemistry with the other guys. When BA was out there consistently Dye was comfortable and even Pods was semi comfortable knowing that BA could cover big time ground. Now they have a few guys out there and the communication has regressed, plus when you have Mack next to Pods you have one of the worse LF/CF combo's in baseball (Dye is an above avg RF). Mix that with Pablo ocassionally out there and there is no reason to be putting this blame on BA right now, in fact if we have him in a few more games we have a few more wins (cause there are a couple games that I know we win because BA makes some catches and we don't blow the game; think Cubs).

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 5, 2006 -> 01:53 PM) He's leading off for a first place team. He's not going anywhere. Give it time....they will need pitching. Not that we can offer it, but we could offer them the prospects to help get a starter in a 3 team deal. Wilkerson can lead off for them. But yes I realize it would be hard acquisition now, but I am saying get him in a month or two if Anderson fails (or at least try to get a guy like him). On a sidenote, I am a proponent of playing Anderson every single day. I think Ozzie has done a piss poor job handling McCarthy and Anderson this year.
