  1. From FutureSox (slowly catching back up)
  2. Justin Cassell...a kid out of UC IRVINE (where I live). Sean Tracey went to UCI as well.
  3. Sox drafted Brian Omogrosso, RHP from Indiana State University (6'4" 230 pounds) Eating lunch so I'll get a writeup a little slower this go round.
  4. I really really like this pick. FutureSox QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 01:26 PM) Getz is the "safer" pick in that he's a plus defender at second, with the possibilty to fill in at short, and has extremely good strike zone control. Shelby has a higher upside with his power and speed, but has obvious holes in his swing which could prevent him from ever reaching the bigs. He reminds me a lot of Todd Walker or Adam Kennedy.
  5. A 2nd baseman out of Kentucky with some speed and pop.
  6. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 01:08 PM) 1)Arm was overrated. He called a ton of pitchouts to get the basestealer out. 2)I haven't heard much about Reeves' speed, is he slow? 3)13 HR's is good for a catcher. How many catchers currently hit 20HR's in the league? I will venture to say it's less than half. 4)Top ten catching prospect, meh it's debatable. Just cause he hit 13 Hr's doesn't mean he'll hit 20 in the majors. Olivo had an absolute cannon (nothing was over-rated about his arm).
  7. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 12:55 PM) I don't think Tyler Reeves is bad. Give me a guy who could hit .300 with 13 hr's anyday. He sounds like an AJ Pierzynski clone. Anyone know how good of a game he calls? From what I've gathered, very raw behind the plate, but possesses a terrific arm and is considered a good athlete for a catcher.
  8. QUOTE(Hatchetman @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 12:48 PM) My first response is eww. Stats are nothing special. Bill Long pops into my mind for some reason. His splits are a lot better (once he worked out his kinks). Last year had an ERA under 3 and really really has impressive secondardy pitches.
  9. QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 12:43 PM) Tyler Reeves was not one of the top 100 prospects in the entire state of Texas. Definately a reach, but someone on the Sox must have loved him. 13 HR's and a .300 AVG
  10. Cards take Degerman out of Rice right behind us. Really good pick by the Cards.
  11. Man I am calling this draft pretty well...said we'd take a catcher pretty early and there it is.
  12. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 12:32 PM) Like you said...he's a project, but will he really have the time to develop as a pitcher. He's a sure-fire top 15 pick in next year's NFL draft. The Cubs are going to give a lot of money to a project who I would be shocked if he ever contributed in the majors. In the 5th round with no other picks why not take a chance. He's more talented than any other 5th rounder. However, your gonna have to throw out a lot of money to stop him from playing his senior season at ND. The Cubs (w Hendry's connection) are about the only team with a shot at doing so. I want Jeff to play FB, he's better at that, plus I love ND and we need him. Edwards had an 81/9 strikeout to walk ratio
  13. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 12:30 PM) I really like our pick that late in the first round. I don't care if a pitcher is a power guy or finesse. I want a guy that knows how to get hitters out. People seem to think the Cubs have an agreement with him in the 5th round. I think it's foolish, as he's nowhere near as good as his hype in baseball. Also, he's going to end up being a football guy in the long run. I disagree, Smardtza has really came on, outstanding athlete with good stuff, but he's more of a project than the typical collegiate QB taken early on.
  14. QUOTE(farmteam @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 12:28 PM) I haven't read the thread, but is Samardzija gone yet? What about the Sox taking a chance on him in the later rounds? No and my guess is he will slide to the Cubs. Apparently Hendry has a good rep with ND's head coach and the Cubs will have money to spend. They could take him in the 5th and throw supplemental round money at Jeff. Otherwise I'd think Jeff would fall and a team will finally take a flier on him but Jeff will probably not get the money it would take for him to play baseball (remember, he's probably a 1st rd pick in the NFL at WR).
  15. Random Notes From Day One FutureSox.com With the draft moving into the 3rd round, FutureSox.com will continue its coverage with bullet updates of the prospects the Sox take throughout day one. We will do our best to update this as quick as the picks come in, so make sure to check this story often.
  16. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 12:22 PM) Sounds kinda Barry Zito-ish? I can't make that comparison. Too many people compare guys with a great hook to Zito and as of now he's obviously got a long way to go to be there. Not many guys can use a High FB with the effectivness of Zito (despite a lack of velocity). We'll se if he can do it, but he has really good command for a prep player. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 12:23 PM) Okay, well, power pitchers tend to be 100% effort, every pitch guys. You'd think that a guy who's hitting 98, 99, 97 on every pitch using all of his might is more likely to get hurt than a guy who's sitting at 92-93, and hitting 94 when need be. I don't think you have much room to complain, but whatever... It happens every year. Technically speaking, regardless you are throwing 100% usually, some guys do it easier than others. Its called "easy heat" by a lot of scouts, but often times scouts exagerate.
  17. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 12:14 PM) We have had a couple of mid-90's pitchers. Honestly, the only real arm that has developed from our drafting under this regime is BMAC, who was sorta a reach. Mac was taken in like the 17th round so I don't know how he's a reach.
  18. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 12:11 PM) I don't really blame the Sox for drafting finesse guys. Since when have we actually been able to develop power arms? The only power pitcher we've had in the last 5 years was a cast-off from the Angels organization (and now Thornton, who's from the Seattle organization). We tend to draft finesse guys that can be quick movers who we feel are good value while at the same time we pick up waived guys or guys with little value that are power pitchers and try to make the finishing touches to them (we have a few guys down in AA that the club picked up this off-season that got killer arms).

  20. Edwards is one of the top prep lefties out of Florida but doesn't have much velocity (still growing though) but he doesn't project to throw hard either. May move into the upper 80's, but he tops out at 90 and pitches in the mid 80's. Has very good command of all 3 pitches (FB, Changeup and curve) and is a commit to the University of Georgia. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 12:08 PM) All finesse type of guys. Interesting. Our 2nd pick throws in the mid 90's.
