Garland
Neal Cotts kept the damage to two runs, but a triple on a play off of Scotty's glove (personally speaking I think its a ball that a lot of LF'ers catch, but I'm not going to call it an easy play) was about the only hard hit ball (until Mike Young knocked him out of the game with an RBI double). Here's my thoughts on Garland's performance (curious to hear what others thought of him): Jon threw a good game. He had a shaky 6th inning and obviously you'd like to see him go deeper in the game, but he got a ton of ground ball outs and seemed to be throwing a little easier. Stunk he couldn't go deeper, but the Rangers really had some good AB's on him and eventually he made a mistake to Young (after Young fouled off some tough pitches; its also a play Dye makes some of the time, but Garland gave up the hard hit ball and thats on him). Kinsler also had a really good AB (to draw the 1 out walk that started things). Overall I thought Jon threw the ball pretty good. NOTE: I posted this in the game thread, but when I thought about it, I figured this is an easier place for those who may not have been able to see the game to find info on Garland's start.

Questions for Brian Omogrosso
FutureSox.com is going to be interviewing Omogrosso in about a day and I have some questions that I'm going to ask him, but I also want to give you guys/gals an opportunity to get some questions you may have about him answered. He is a sidewinding reliever out of Indiana State University that the White Sox selected in the 6th round of the 2006 MLB draft.

Comedians
QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 13, 2006 -> 04:56 PM) Have you heard Pablo Francisco's acts about Las Vegas? And his pieces about movies and Ahhhnold are great too. Ya, my only problem with him is that the 2nd time I saw him live (and it was quite a bit after the 1st time) was that a lot of his material was very similar (I like to see new stuff).

What would decent reliever cost us?
The Sox could see enough out of Tracey or Montero that they could just get a guy like Hawkins/Hernandez and than go with a plan where Lumsden or another youngster comes up late in the year and pitches in as well. Its not like we don't have some arms down in AA that could potentially contribute and Lummy is exactly the type of guy that could make a pretty immediate impact in a pen. Of course thats risky, but if we go into the playoffs with a pen with Lummy, an improved Tracey (we will need to see if that will pan out) and than a guy like Hawkins/Hernandez to go with Cotts and Jenks we should be in decent shape (especially when you consider the rest the relievers should get due to the days off during the playoffs; plus one of our starters will move to the pen as well).

QUOTE(bmags @ Jun 13, 2006 -> 04:12 PM) finally saw shaun of the dead. So brilliant. Even being much of a comedy, the fact that they had character development and you cared about the characters made it 10x better than most honest scary movies out there. Shaun of the Dead is one of my favorite funny scary movies (I consider it a comedy myself). Really whitty and just an all around enjoyable flick.

Comedians
QUOTE(palesox38 @ Jun 13, 2006 -> 01:04 AM) I absolutley love stand-up comedy and I have a difficult time deciding exaclty who my number #1 favorite is. I can't decide between Jim Gaffigan, Lewis Black, and Dane Cook. Dane and Lewis bring alot of energy, but Jim's delivery is great (and Beyond The Pale is hilarious) and I haven't watched Dane Cook's Tourgasm yet but I can't wait to see it. They all have their strong points and I had a difficult time finding one thing they all have in common but I managed to- alot of their lines are completly random. Post your favorites as well, I'de like to know what comedians people like. By the way, for the Gaffigan fans, does anyone else think its about time this guy got an HBO special? P.S.- I'm not a big Mitch Hedburg fan, is there anyone else who agrees? My favorites would be Pablo Francisco and Dane Cook. Both are very good live with Dane Cook being the better of the two. Oh and Dave Attel.

Official Soxtalk 2006 World Cup Thread
QUOTE(danman31 @ Jun 13, 2006 -> 01:07 PM) That's a pretty awful group to pick that can compete against Brazil. France has major questions after the scoreless draw with the Swiss. Portugal has a history of underachieving so I'm not going to even consider them. The Czechs looked good but they were playing us. I'm thinking England, Italy, and maybe Argentina or Holland among a few others could hang with/beat Brazil. I'd be stunned if any of the teams you mentioned made it to the semis. Argentina and the Dutch are possibilities and I don't know how you can count out the Germans. Can't see England doing it nor the Italy team of yesterday, but Italy has the talent and if they can build upon things as the cup goes on it could be a possibility.

Outfield Posibilities
QUOTE(Heath @ Jun 13, 2006 -> 12:15 PM) Reds fan here - You can have Ryan Freel - but don't get him used to Old Style. But, we need pitching in the worst way. Someone mentioned Chris Denorfia, and he's about the closest thing the Reds have to major league prospect. He's around in case Kearns or Griffey goes down. I assume the Reds have pretty much completely given up on Wagner.

What would decent reliever cost us?
Fields/Lumsden should not be getting dealt unless we get the "Brad Lidge" or "Scott Shields" type.

Draft Pick Signings
The Sox have now came to terms with 19 draft picks, including 2nd rounder Matt Long.

The Brats at the park own. The food at the cell is so much better to that in Anaheim.

When you played baseball...
QUOTE(PaleHose4Life35 @ Jun 13, 2006 -> 11:59 AM) Growing up I played so many different positions until I got to about 6th or 7th grade then I mostly played 1B but then my 8th grade year my team didn't have a catcher so I jumped in there and liked it a lot. So Freshman Year I tried out as a catcher and made the team and we were real good, then the next year I tried out for the first two days but quit after realizing that if I made the team it would probably be my last year on a high school team and I wouldn't play very much so I thought it wasn't worth it. I still play in local rec leagues and play just for fun with my friends. I was a pretty good player in High School and middle school. In Middle School I hit close to .400 because I didn't play travel baseball, and once I got to high school the AVG went down a bit because it was a big change of pace from in-house leagues to high school. Catcher...the one position I could never play and I got a lot of respect for anyone that does play it. Being a lefty helped, but us pitchers would catch each other from time to time and I had a hell of a time with it. One time my dumb self missed a ball and got drilled in the chest (knocked the wind right out of me).

Tailgating in Cincinnati
Heath, thanks for stopping by and passing on that info. Great stuff and aside from this weekend we definately wish you guys the best. I've really been shocked with the Reds staying around, but you guys have gotten a lot out of the Dave Rosses and Brandon Phillips of the world and the rotation has been better than expected. However, I shudder the thought of Griffey coming to Chicago.

The Dodgers always get more coverage than the Angels out there, although that has started to change with the Angels playing better baseball as of late. But bottom line, they don't have to be "fair and balanced" when it comes to sports. Its not like politics, in which case, a paper could really have a major influence on people...its sports. Fact of the matter is, the Cubs are the big boys in the city of Chicago (although the Sox are making things close) and they will get more pub, its the nature of the beast when you are the most popular team. Hell, you think we got it bad, you got to really feel for the Clippers fans. For god sakes the Clips don't deserve the same pub as the Lakers. Of course in the case of the Lakers and Dodgers you could make the case that they are historically some of the best sports franchises in the history of the game. The same can't be said about the Cubs, but they are still the big boys in town.

When you played baseball...
I played baseball (and soccer for that matter) for most of my life. Starting around 5 or 6 and playing up into high school (for baseball). I played in a few leagues per year (pretty much played year round) and I pitched and played 1st base, although as I got older I moved to the outfield (I was at one point a damn good defensive first baseman) but thats cause early on if you could catch you played first base and I kind of stuck with it for a while until a coach wanted my speed out in the OF (I am not super fast, but am fast enough and get very very good reads on the ball). Pitching was my bread and butter though, I never threw hard, but no matter what I threw (a lefty) it had a ton of movement on it. In the younger levels (when you couldn't throw breaking balls) I was routinely asked to stop throwing (and one time was forced off the mound) for throwing breaking balls (problem was I never threw them, I just had an assload of natural movement on the ball). I went into high school with the expectations of making varsity at a pretty young age, but my arm got hurt just prior to my high school season (did the summer league with a lot of the high school team) and my arm was pretty much shot (it had been killing me a lot up to that point, but I just pitched threw it). I had to have surgery (nothing major) but I never really rehabbed it and pretty much was on the team but didn't play (aside from a few AB's and some defensive substitutions). My arm has pretty much sucked since than and I wish I just worked hard and rehabbed it, but I was really sick of the arm hurting (my shoulder injury got my mechanics all out of whack and it lead to me messing up my elbow, which is fine now). As far as the pitches I threw, I was a FB/Change/Curve guy but I pretty much only threw the FB and change and the curve would be a get me over for a strike (ocassionally I'd snap off a really really good one, but I wasn't at all consistent with it). I was just able to throw my FB and change (which had good sink to it and good arm speed) pretty much anywhere I wanted.

Roethlisberger injured in motorcycle crash
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 13, 2006 -> 09:57 AM) I'm not a doctor or even close to one, so I ask for the help of somebody that would know about this.....but wouldn't a 9 inch gash on your head be life threatening with all the blood you could lose? Okay, maybe I wasn't crazy, I thought ESPN said a 9 inch gash too (and Steff mentioned it as well). Thats freaking huge, I'd think that would be insanely serious.
