  1. QUOTE(VAfan @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 09:33 AM) Okay, that makes some sense. I guess one thing KW could do is ask for negotiating time with Burnett and during that time work out a deal with Philly? Because, otherwise, could FL kill the deal if they knew Burnett was ending up with a division rival? If we're not going to flip Burnett, then I'm strongly against the deal. Contreras, Bajenaru and Munoz or Diaz is still better than anything Boston is going to offer FL. Bronson Arroyo is a pretty solid pitcher who would be pretty good in the NL, imo. Plus they get a prospect. Its not that much different of an offer. However I think they'd consider an offer around Contreras and someone else could intrigue them, but Kenny doesn't want to deal Jose or thats the gist I'm picking up.
  2. I'd still just as well go for Odalis Perez or Jeff Weaver when it comes to pitching. Both are pretty solid pitchers who wouldn't be bad on the South Side. Perez is signed for the next 2 or 3 years at like 8 mill a year (reasonable) and wouldn't cost quite as much. Heck, I think the Doders would consider a Marte for Perez deal. Sox would than have tons of chips left to dangle for a guy like Wagner or Guardado or some other lefty.
  3. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 09:29 AM) Damn... I didn't realize how good of a season Floyd is having -- .279/.354/.520. Those are some pretty good numbers for playing at Shea... Ya, his bat would be a major upgrade at the cell. He's a good player but he's also the type of guy the Mets would move. Find a place for him to hit (I'd DH him with him ocassionally playing OF). However he's essentially a better offensive version of Everett cause he isn't the greatest defensive player. I also think Floyd could ocassionally play 1st. Floyd was by far the biggest all star snub, all because Beltran got voted in when he didn't earn it.
  4. I think your right on the no trade clause. I think the Sox tried to get him a few times the past couple years with the deals always falling through for one reason or another. However, I also think he's from the Chicago area (maybe I'm wrong) and would consider it with the Sox winning. He could play 1st or DH or OF and would provide left handed pop. But I still don't know how the Sox make room.
  5. Alright since I saw this name....I would think of a Jermaine Dye for Ken Griffey swap. I think the Reds would listen simply because they'd save a lot of money. I wouldn't give them a top prospect in the deal. The problem is Griffey doesn't want to leave Cinncy and I Think he has a full no-trade clause. If he's heatlhy he's a major upgrade to the lineup, plus he brings a left handed bat with power. The big thing I want to see is Aaron Rowand moving into the 2 hole with Guchi sliding down. But if the Sox made a deal with Cincy, I'd rather get Freel. He's a really solid ballplayer.
  6. QUOTE(Jeckle2000 @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 09:10 AM) Which is exactly why all Sox fans should be glad your not the GM... Frank should retire in a White Sox uniform as a sign of respect... I'm not saying break open the bank for him but after the 3.5 million dollar buyout giving him a new contract for about 1.5 to 3 million certainly wouldn't hurt anything. He is a hall of famer and deserves to retire as a White Sox... If I were a GM, my job would be to find the team to win. I woudln't be running the team to offer guys favors, at least not 1.5 to 3 mill favors. If Frank were rehabbing and just wanted an incentive based deal and the ability to get a chance if he were to play good, than fine. Aside from that your job is to win, not make friends and if paying Frank 3 mill gets in the way of making the team better, you don't make the move. I'd rather have a better ball club. I would not be a loyal GM. If guys play well, they'd get there rewards, but I wouldn't sit around paying them as a thanks of what they did for a few years or in Franks case 10. Its not smart.
  7. QUOTE(Y2HH @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 09:09 AM) And I would do that in a second, no doubt about it. Essentially that's trade Marte, a great setup man and a prospect in Bmac (and I don't care what anyone thinks about Bmac, he's hit or miss right now), and in return we get an ELITE closer who can hit 100mph from the left side. Yes, yes and yes again. I would too. I think thats significantly upgrades the pen. I don't think acquiring Burnett and sliding Contreras to the bullpen really upgrades the rotation that much. It does give the club a lot of depth if someone is injured though. However, what if they add Burnett and than spin Contreras and someone for Wagner (whose to say Philly wouldn't be interested).
  8. Griffey is having a good year, I don't doubt that. I still don't see where this move makes sense, both now and long term. He shouldn't be a CF (I wouldn't risk it and I wouldn't let him play there every day), especially with Rowand in CF (he's a better defensive CF than Griffey). Plus the contract is awful, obviously the Reds would be willing to pick up a decent amount of it for a few prospects. IF they took on a good amount of money they'd want Bmac, Tracey and something else (they'd want pitching prospects, imo). If they didn't take as much on the contract, my guess would be Gio and Tracey or something involving lower level guys who haven't proven as much. Obviously in terms of prospects, it woudln't be that bad, but do the Sox risk shaking the lineup up that much? What happens when Frank comes back. You get a ton of depth, which is nice, and I guess it would only be for a month or two anyway until Frank and Paulie walked, but I'd be shocked if a team made these type of changes after rolling out to the best record in baseball. It be easy if you could deal Konerko and prospects for a guy like Pujols (serious upgrade that wouldn't totally shake up the roster). Notice I'm just throwing out some randomly obvious upgrade (not at all saying to trade for Pujols). However thats the type of deal I'd like to see him look at. For example, if there was a top SS available....Uribe/Anderson and someone else for a really good shortstop, I'd do it. I'd also think about keeping Uribe and using him as a super sub.
  9. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 09:04 AM) So, you would deal AJ Burnett, BMac, and Damaso Marte for Wagner??? No, your dealing Bmac and Marte for Wagner essentially. Burnett is just the chip you use to get Wagner. But since to get Burnett you gave up those two, its essentially Marte and Bmac for Wagner.
  10. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 08:58 AM) KW wants another bat. Levine was saying they came in second for Graffinino and for Randa. So he knows more offense is in order. I think with Frank out, it opens up a spot for a guy at any position. So does Everett get the heave-ho? He's done a good job at DH, even though he is in a funk his past 4 games or so. Obviously the Sox could use a middle of the order bat, but I don't see them getting rid of a guy like Paulie or Aaron or someone else in order to fill it. Joe Randa or Graff would of given the club depth if Crede went down, but aside from that they wouldn't put the club over the top.
  11. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 08:58 AM) Uribe would be the most likely guy. Vizquel as your number 2. Move gooch further back in the lineup so he can swing away. I think it gets the front of the lineup even better, and improves an inconsistant back of the lineup. Pods Viz Arow Dye Everett Kong/Gload AJ Crede Gooch I've been clammoring for Omar for weeks, but I'm convinced Vizquel isn't available. Considering how much the Sox liked him this past off-season and considering how Omar wanted to go to the Sox, it would make too much sense. Since I haven't ever heard his name really seriously tied to rumors I'm going to assume he's not on the market.
  12. One quick thing I want to say is this. How much better are the Sox with AJ Burnett? AJ Burnett basically slides in and replaces Contreras in the rotation. Is it an upgrade, some would say no, some would say yes...a major one...not likely. Contreras slides into the pen. Who knows if the Sox get another lefty. So is Contreras (the reliever) make the pen stronger than one with Marte? I don't think so, simply because we don't know. Honestly as much of a Burnett fan as I am, I'm starting to wonder just how much sense this deal makes. If the club gets Lowell, I can see it making a bit more sense. Lowell is a much better player than he's showed this year and could definately help out the club (plus a great insurance option if something happens to Joltin Joe). Now this deal does do one thing...if Duque goes down the Sox can just pencil in Contreras giving them very good depth in the rotation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Now lets look at something else. Say the Sox trade Burnett for Wagner. The rotation stays the same (no loss here, we have a good rotation, especially if Duque pitches like he did last night). Wagner replaces Marte (he's much better than Marte). So the rotation stays the same but the pen gets much much stronger and the Sox also have great depth in case Hermy's back stiffens up and puts him on the DL (that or Hermy simply slides into the 8th inning role, meaning Politte to the 7th) and in a sense you could make it a 6 inning game. Basically put...I'd rather make this deal with the idea of getting Wagner than the other way around.
  13. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 08:43 AM) After last night, thats all I could say. GET ANOTHER BAT. KW, overpay, do what you have to do, the 3-4-5 can be shut down, and has been time and time again. Something needs to be done. For those wanting a bat. My question is who gets replaced in the lineup and who do you all want?
  14. Hasn't Wagner said he may retire at the end of the season?
  15. Cliff Floyd has always been a guy that Kenny has liked.
  16. QUOTE(VAfan @ Jul 23, 2005 -> 09:30 AM) When Frank says he's at a 10 on the pain meter for his ankle, and that it is affecting his play, I think we may not see Frank again this season. And if he can't prove he is healthy against live pitching again this year, I fear the Sox may just buy out his contract and let him go, notwithstanding what KW said just a few weeks ago. I'd be interested to know the rules about adding him to the playoff roster is he's not reactivated until sometime in September. Does anyone know? I assume because he's an injury-casualty that he could be added at any time. Practically speaking then, we only really need him to come back in mid-September for him to get his form back. But I don't expect to see him before that. We don't need a Frank Thomas at 70%. Better to rest and try to get back to 90%. In the meantime, I hope Ozzie moves Rowand up in the order. He looks like he might resume his torrid hitting from last year and help carry the team. And I'd like to see a lot of Ross Gload if he can hit at all like he did last year. We could use someone that can crack the .300 hitting barrier and draw walks. If Frank misses the rest of the year (I don't know the extent of his injury but I'm assuming its more minor than anything) than my belief is that you've already seen his final game in a White Sox uniform. There is absolutely no reason why the Sox should agree to that option. The best thing they can do is buy that contract out. If they want him, they can renegotiate and sign him to a different deal (Personally I wouldn't). If I were GM Frank would of been dealt two years ago at the deadline.
  17. QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 08:29 AM) If this trade goes down, I think we'll see another one. Clearly there is a need for another bat. To me there is only one spot the other bat can go and thats shortstop. You could make a case for 2nd as well cause Guchi is in a major major funk. But Omar Vizquel would look amazing. Problem is I don't think the Giants are interested in dealing him.
  18. In regards to the move to the pen. I'd have to think the Sox are more comfortable moving Contreras to the pen (since they once thought he would make a very good closer) as opposed to Duque. Thats not to say that Contreras wouldn't eventually rejoin the rotation after Duque got hurt again. However, I got to say, Duque pitched very well last night and in his last two starts he's shown better stuff than he has all year.
  19. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 07:45 AM) Not for $7,500,000 or even half of that, and then of course he's under contract for another season. If anything, this lineup needs a good lefty hitter, Lowell doesn't give you that. Whose to say Lowell doesn't replace Paulie in the off-season. The Sox still need a left handed hitter inserted somewhere in the lineup, but that could come with whoever replaces Frank. I highly doubt the Sox add Lowell though. However, I'll be very excited if Marte is the only major leaguer dealt in the deal. I don't care if they give up Bmac and another good prospect at that point (unless that prospect was named Chris Young). Also, I'd love to see AJ locked to a deal similar to Frederico.

  21. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2005 -> 04:00 PM) Speaking about Sac Flies, I read something this morning about Adam Dunn being one of the worst situational hitters in baseball. He went 2 years without a sac fly. That just blew my mind. Ya, he got it earlier this year. He's ridiculously over-rated in my book.

    ROFL What an Idiot...
  23. Remember, the Sox also could than move Duque or Contreras to the pen which I guess the Sox seem to think would be a goove moe. To me this trade either means one of Jose/Duque would be going for a reliever (I'd prefer dealing Duque myself) or the Sox slide one of them to the pen and dangle Viz and a prospect for a lefty reliever. One of Duque/Contreras moves to the pen to replace Viz while Viz and a good prospect or two get the Sox a lefty reliever.
