QUOTE (SockMe @ Oct 27, 2009 -> 04:07 PM) Random Question: Who is Better Iowa or TCU? TCU has impressed the hell out of me. They haven't played the schedule Iowa has though and I'm a homer so I'll give them the nod, but I won't lie, TCU looks real good and that romping of BYU was impressive. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 27, 2009 -> 03:12 PM) I thought Rex was Michigan fan, he's a bama fan? I believe Michigan is his #1 team but I'm sure he follows Bama a lot since he lives there. -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 27, 2009 -> 03:13 PM) Ha, I never put 2 and 2 together, Nix is alot like Uribe. Exept that Uribe played plus plus defense at the premiere infield position from a defensive perspective and was also a stud at 3B and could play 2B too. Nix couldn't dream of being the defensive player Uribe was. And even with all that said, Uribe wasn't very good with the exception of 2 years in Chicago (as a pure starter), although his defense was very valuable. Uribe did have a damn good year (Uribe wise) this season in San Fran though IIRC.

White Sox show interest in Aroldis Chapman...

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 27, 2009 -> 11:50 AM) How about that record setting Jose Contreras contract? I think the White Sox aren't complaining about it. Technically speaking that contract as well as the one the Sox gave Jose were complete busts. And I'd be hard pressed to see anyone put together any evidence to dispute that. Contreras had one above average 20-25 game stretch in his career and outside of that he was either a league average pitcher to a below average pitcher (depending on the season). -
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Oct 27, 2009 -> 01:30 PM) He was consistently terrible. You're also going to have a hard time finding people who agree with your evaluation of his defense, aside from his canon arm he's an incredibly mediocre defender. He's also a Boras client, an HGH user and a mental midget. You are probably right, but I'd think for a corner OF'er he'd be pretty good defensively. Good speed, great arm, etc. He has nice power, the HGH thing is something I had forgotten about and obviously he was awful last year. Still, he's got a nice skill-set and depending on what the Sox do I could see them going that route. I wouldn't guarantee greatness though, but he's got the ability to be a solid back of the order power bat for cheap.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 27, 2009 -> 01:08 PM) I'd be on board for Rick Ankiel. He's a plus defensive outfielder and I think he has a lot of nice offensive tools, even though this past year was a down defensive season compared to his season of two years ago. Plus he'd provide some nice pop from the left side of the plate. It would clearly be a risk though since he really did stink it up last season.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 27, 2009 -> 11:51 AM) What made Hampton a stud again? You keep saying he was their stud RB, but I wasnt positive where that came from. He didnt do all that much last year because Greene was the man, and he wasnt highly recruited either. I am just wondering, not baiting. He looked really, really good in flashes last season and all of the experts were talking about Iowa not skipping much of a beat with him being the starter this year. I was surprised by it since he was a mere 3 star recruit, but he's very explosive and seemed to be one of those guys that people thought wasn't going to be able to dominate at the next level but was still solid. I think almost every big 10 pre-season prediction I read, was raving about Jewel. -
Top-5 prospects Kenny will trade this offseason
Chisoxfn replied to Kenny Hates Prospects's topic in FutureSox Board
Morel is the type of player the Sox need, so I don't think they trade him. Plus I don't think he's got a ton of value on the trade-market yet so I think he's more valuable to keep in as opposed to move. -

Its official. Iowa lost its co-starting RB, Adam Robinson (True Freshman) for the season. That leaves them with Wegher (True Freshman and the other Co-Starter), Paki (not that good), and Rogers (True-Fresh that was being redshirted). I have to believe they are going to be forced to pull the red-shirt on Rogers and hope they can get to the Ohio State game un-beaten and hope that Wegher stays healthy and that Rogers can prove to be solid as well. This is a huge huge loss for the Hawkeyes who already suffered a massive loss at the start of the season when there stud Hampton was lost for the year. -
QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 27, 2009 -> 09:25 AM) I don't get how you can say the Philly offense is nowhere near as potent and their secondary starters are better. The Phillies' lineup is really tough top to bottom between Rollins/Victorino/Utley/Howard/Ibanez/Werth, and with Ruiz hitting well, that gives them a top 7 that compares pretty closely to the Yankees' Jeter/Damon/Teix/Arod/Cano/Posada/Matsui. I know Hamels has not been himself, but he and Pedro match up just fine with Burnett and Petitte. I really think this series is going to be closer than many think. The Yankees hold the edge in their bullpen but Joba and Hughes certainly have not been dominant, and Lidge has pitched well for the Phillies. I think you are off. Hamels has struggled against the NL as of late and really looks like a shell of the pitcher he was a year ago. I suspect he's fatigued and a little banged up and its hurting his effectiveness. Pedro has pitched good and he's gutsy, but its one thing to do it in the NL, its another to do it against a premiere AL offense. Burnett and Pettite are much much better at this point (based upon recent performance, etc). Offensively, I think the Phils are solid, but I just think the Yanks are ridiculous. I think Tex and Arod are better than Utley/Howard. The Yanks really have a ridiculous lineup. Phils have a great line-up too, but I really have to point out how legit the Yanks lineup is and it is also pretty well balances as they have plenty of guys that can hit for avg too and almost everyone on that squad gets on base.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 27, 2009 -> 10:15 AM) I think you're comparing apples to oranges though as well. You're talking about bringing in an elite football coach but not the possibility of bringing in an elite baseball manager... If we hired Shanahan, would be suddenly become a powerhouse in the NFC? If we hired LaRussa, would we suddenly become a powerhouse in the AL? I tend to think you could make an argument for both... I happen to think Ozzie is an upper echelon manager. He might not be the best at the X's and O's of baseball, but I believe he's one of the very best at managing the psyche of the players and I believe he always holds players accountable while still having a good relationship with the team. Ozzie is very underrated on Soxtalk, imo.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Oct 27, 2009 -> 09:50 AM) I personally started getting sour on Lovie about a month ago. Up until then I'd been a defender. I haven't loved Lovie, but I certainly haven't hated on him and I gave him the benefit of the doubt for a while. But recently its become blatantly obvious that something isn't going right in Chicago and its time for a change. I still think they compete for the playoffs, but ultimately I have higher expectations and I don't necessary think Lovie is the man for the job. I wish him success though and hope I'm wrong cause we are probably stuck with him for at least another year. And in his defense I don't think we even have the personsell of a top 20 defensive unit.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 27, 2009 -> 09:40 AM) I can agree with some of what you are saying here...but I think maybe there is some over reacting going on in response to just a horrendous game...I'd like to see how we look about 4 games from now before I make some of the definitive statements that are being made the last few days in here... All I'm saying is the team came out ill-prepared and the veterans have played flat. Lovie needs to make a statement and start sitting the vets that don't play, etc and being agressive to let people know that enough is enough. He finally did that with Tommie Harris and I comment him. And I still think the Bears are a playoff team, I just think there has been an overall lack of accountability going on in Chicago for a couple years under Lovie and it is getting old. Ron Turner was okay last year, but he's had some abysmal years calling shots, specifically the year after the superbowl where Turner was awful. Bob Babich got a year too long and Lovie ultimately needs a lot of heat for what went down on the defensive side of the football. Rivera is a scapegoat and gets far too much credit, but at the same time, when you get rid of a guy that was donig a good job and being very creative on his blitz schemes (it was a hybrid cover 2) and than switch him for a buddy and that guy fails your going to take heat. San Diego was raving about Rivera last season, this year they've been decimated with injuries (and someone will for sure point out how the Bears were this year...although I think Urlacher is the only key injury and Pisa was a luxury). And no I don't think Rivera is all that great either. Bottom line though, the tone of this team has been poor and it has gotten worse. We haven't seen much development out of any of our young players (sans our Wr's) over the past 3 years and our vets have gotten nothing but worse but seem to continuously get a free pass as they continue to play.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 27, 2009 -> 09:36 AM) I really can't believe how much s*** Lovie is taking in this thread. Funny how everyone wants Lovie gone but the same people don't seem to be calling for Ozzie's head. Seems like they are awfully comparable to me... I think an NFL head coach is far more involved and responsible for his teams successes and failures than an MLB head coach.

QUOTE (docsox24 @ Oct 27, 2009 -> 10:04 AM) of course i dont know for a fact, nobody does, heck he probably doesnt even know. im not making absurd unfounded claims either. i do know what age the organization believes he is and its not 21 and i will leave it at that. is it so absurd to think his age is not 21? i think its more absurd to think that he is 21. You have connections I take it? -
QUOTE (lostfan @ Oct 27, 2009 -> 09:32 AM) Well like he was saying, it's not Roach's fault he sucks and is not Brian Urlacher. But when you start, your going to take the heat. Your a professional getting paid to do a job. I wish he could make the plays, but if I don't have the skill-set and forced into something at my job that I'm not prepared for and fail, I'm going to take heat, just like he's going to take heat. Plus when I've heard all about how good Roach and Williams are, yet they have never emerged as a starter it makes me wonder why. Maybe we now know why? Maybe its a bunch of BS and they really are just special teamers. In which case, Lovie/Jerry, how about we start developing guys or drafting better players.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 27, 2009 -> 09:10 AM) I see DeWayne Wise syndrome has taken over Bears fans... Blame the 4th stringer. Exept, he's the starting MLB on your team so he isn't the 4th stringer anymore. He's got a job to do and if he can't do it, the Bears need to find someone else who can. Especially when the MLB is so important in the cover 2 as he's responsible for the middle of the field zone which is often times one of the biggest openings in the cover-2. The most important part is the pass-rush, which was non-existent, but the pass-rush is the most important part of any d.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 27, 2009 -> 08:00 AM) Roach was straight up out of position everytime I saw a replay. Benson was faking him out of his shoes Roach played one of the worse games I've seen out of a starting LB ever. I counted over 10 passes which were wide open because he was out of his zone.

The only way the Phils have a shot is if Cliff Lee absolutely carries them and they win all 3 of his starts. Otherwise I think this series goes about 5 games, 6 max and the Yanks take it. Hammels has been bad, Phillies pen isn't good, and there offense isn't near as potent as the Yankees who have the ace in CC and better secondary starters than the Phils (plus a much better pen). Like I said above, no way the Phils take this, barring a dominant performance by Cliff Lee.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 26, 2009 -> 07:25 PM) Honestly, I respect your opinion a lot because I know you have some insight that a lot of us don't, with you being so close to the Barons and all, but come on, man. Being the GM of a professional football team is one of the most demanding and difficult of jobs there are. The men and hopefully soon to be women serving as General Managers are all incredibly intelligent, or they wouldn't have gotten to the point that they are or were. To claim that you can't value their opinion in regards to their respective sports because they didn't get the job done while they had the job is ridiculous. Steve Phillips has infinitely more knowledge regarding the game of baseball than any of us has here, and you can't listen to him because he failed with the Mets? And yet you come here to read the posts of random whackjobs like us on a message board? Plus, prior to becoming a GM, Matt Millen was widely regarded as one of the best NFL commentators in the business. I think he's been rusty early in the year but he's still very good and I really respect his opinion because he has that unique perspsective, much like Charlie Casserly has when they talk about the NFL draft on NFL Network (since he's been so involved with that side of things as a former GM and scout).

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Oct 27, 2009 -> 08:31 AM) It really doesn't matter what hand he hits with. If Nix truly is the better hitter and fielder (as all viable metrics suggest) he deserves the job. Would it really kill us to have another 20 homeruns on the stat sheet? Regardless, of what position and side of the plate it comes from? The thing is, he won't be productive and he has shown no history of being productive. Getz has. And I'm not saying Getz is going to be a star but he's a much better baseball player than Nix.

Wow, not too good. I can't believe I missed Mr. Pornstache and Fisk. I remember Kark and forget Fisk, ugh. 14 out of 20. Also missed Bill Melton, Minnie Minoso (didn't think he had the power numbers), Sherm Lollar, and the great Greg Walker.

I guarantee Iowa will suck. If they don't, its because the rest of college basketball got swine flu for the entire season and they were the only ones immune to it.
