Sox acquire Mark Teahen, $$$ for Getz/Fields
QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 10:00 AM) Is that really true? Can someone show us some defensive metrics? I seem to remember Teahan being a solid 3b...my guess is the numbers say he isn't, which is why you have the opinion that you do. Could he really be any worse at 3rd than Gordon? Gordon will be a very good 3B, book it. He's got great hands, a strong enough arm, and very quick reflexes. The big thing he lacked was the lateral movements of an above avg shortstop, but as a 3B he has the ability to be a gold glover in time, imo.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 09:58 AM) Tell me why Chris Getz is a good player. Tell me why he's better then Nix or Teahen. Give me some numbers, don't give me feelings. Dude, about 50 people have done so. Get over it. You have your opinion, the rest of the world has there's. Lets not beat a dead horse.

Sox acquire Mark Teahen, $$$ for Getz/Fields
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 09:56 AM) How versatile are you really when you suck just about everywhere you play on the field? Real hard to get excited about Mark Teahen, he doesn't do a whole hell of a lot well. The part that kills me is that I honestly think Mark would have been non-tendered. He has some tools and potential but in five years he hasn't lived up to it so why pay a premium for it like the Sox have. This really is a bad trade and I rarely hammer on Kenny.

Sox acquire Mark Teahen, $$$ for Getz/Fields
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 09:55 AM) Well no one has even mentioned the possibility that the Sox have set their sights on a middle infielder/3b who will replace Getz... The first thing I thought of when I heard this trade was that the Sox had opened up the ability to sign Figgins. They could also find a different Ss and move Alexei back to 2B if they want to do that (although that would probably be expensive...so would Figgins). I'm quite curious as to what they got in mind, because as is, I'm not a fan of this move at all.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 09:55 AM) It's that kind of crap that made Chris Getz into a legend on this board.. What don't you like about Nix? That he struggled at hitting RHP in his rookie year? That he can hit for pop, steal a base, field the damn position better then Getz? The raw data works in Nixs' favor. That he has a long swing and can't hit for an average. That he's a bench player that can't field at SS nor does he play an excellent 3B. That he hit .220 while being babied and only facing lefties. I don't like anything about Nix offensive approach and it is detrimental toa team over a full season. Getz isn't a star, but he has so many more positive things he can do for a team.

Sox acquire Mark Teahen, $$$ for Getz/Fields
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 09:53 AM) Really? I don't want him starting but he's a perfect bench player imo. If he learns to play other positions, fine, but I see little value in a bench player that can only play 2B above average, is a butcher at Ss and is mediocre at 3B. He's got a lot to work on if he wants a permanent job. Now Teahan/Kotsay, those are bench players. Basically put, Nix has work to do to become a good bench player. He has the potential to be that though, I'd admit that.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 09:51 AM) Nix isn't going to start. Getz at $400K is not a liability, and you're still cutting his abilities short because you love Nix for some reason. Nix sucks as a starter. He's a decent backup, but he can't play SS very well, so he's not even the best option there either. I'm pissed about this trade because we just added over $4M to the payroll for a player that is easily replaceable. I personally hope we sell NIx. I don't like the way he plays the game.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 09:51 AM) Why do you assume Teahan wouldn't play 3rd? Because Teahan isn't that good of a defensive 3rd baseman, nor does he hit good enough to play 3B, imo. You don't move Gordon Beckham for Mark Teahan. If you want Teahen in the infield, he plays 2B, not 3B.

Floyd feels fine.
Very important. Given that Ozzie had talked about him having to potentially change his delivery, which would have been a very bad thing.

Per Reifert, Mark Kotsay given 1 year deal
Great signing. Such a versatile bench player. Key word, BENCH PLAYER.

Sox acquire Mark Teahen, $$$ for Getz/Fields
Wow, I'm not a fan. Getz and Fields for a guy that will make 4M in salary. Makes very little sense to me. However, I will say that I like Teahan, but wow, opened up a major hole at 2B. There are guys out there who could fill that hole and none of them with the possible exception of Beckham (if a 3B is brought in) or Retherford (who has raked at every level, although that is no guarantee that he'll do the same at the big league level) are on the Sox. Sox have to be getting cash back or something. I really think Mark is a solid player and a very versatile pick-up, but at the same time the finances of this deal don't make sense. I think we'll find out its Fields for Teahan.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 08:26 AM) Pff, Retherford has Danny Richar written all over him. You can all slob him and say he's the next great thing, and I'll sit here and tell you that just breaking out at 24 in a fall league is a sign that he's getting lucky and he will suck. Then he'll hit .200 or so and look like crap but people will still refuse to believe. Then he will finally, a year later, be given away and fade to no man's land. He didn't just emerge. Retherford might not be a top 30 prospect, but he's raked at every level.

Job Offer Question
Tell them you've interviewed with another company and are expecting to here back from them soon, but also be honest about your preference of GE. No harm with that, especially during internship recruiting. They want the people they hire to really like the company and in this instance you are saying hey, I like you guys a lot.

The Droid
It looks really really nice, but I'm sure it will have some first generation bugs. Unfortunately I don't have Verizon so it doesn't matter anyway. Having a keyboard (a real one) is priceless. THat touch stuff doesn't work for me...

Catch-All Anything Thread
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 03:52 PM) OK, my younger brother still lives at home with our parents. My parents have no use for computers and no knowledge of them, but my brother wants to get the internet on our computer. Since my parents don't care about the internet, they have no desire to buy it, and my brother doesn't have money. My aunt lives directly next door to them and has wireless internet. So, here's my question. How do you get a regular desktop computer to pick up a wireless signal? Can you even do it? There is definitely connectivity in my parents' house from my aunt's house, and she doesn't care. He just needs to be a wireless adapter which will pick up the signal. Get a USB one for 20 or 30 bucks, plug it in, follow the instructions, access the WIFI and your golden.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 03:35 PM) Yes, there is demand, but not as much as there is for a masters in Finance (at least, from what I see, being in the sector). Economics has a lower % in private work, higher in public work, relatively. Other way around for Finance. Pluses and minuses to each of those. Of course, right now, neither one is in extremely HIGH demand. But finance and accounting are still pretty strong, because even with the financial industry reeling, companies still need more and more of those folks to keep up with all the new rules and risks. Don't ever get a masters in accounting, unless you are a tax professional and in which case a masters in tax can be very valuable. For all other purposes, most worthless masters you could possibly get.

QUOTE (SnB @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 02:48 PM) Finance People: Is there any demand for masters degrees in economics? (Would it be worth pursuing?) Get an MBA before you do a Masters in Econ. Well unless you plan on pursuing teaching or something along those lines. But if you are looking for value added in the private sector and your going to get a major, get the MBA, by far the most broad and most beneficial compared to the others.

Iwamura Traded To Pirates
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 11:27 AM) And because Zobrist is just fine at 2B. Yep, Rays had no use for Iwamura. Financially they save money and we'll see what the Rays do with it. they also saved a ton when they moved Kazmir and if there pitching recoups they should be just fine to make another run next year.

Iwamura Traded To Pirates
Interesting. Good move by the Pirates. Rays made the deal for financial purposes I assume.

How close is Jordan Danks
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 3, 2009 -> 12:43 PM) Danks has about a zero chance of making the team this spring. That being said, if he has a good summer next year, I could see him getting a cup of coffee in September. That is the soonest I see him having a chance at making it. Buddy Bell has said that he's ready defensively and very close to ready offensively. Now I'm not saying the Sox will go with him, but from what has been quoted, the brass believes he's knocking on the door.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 1, 2009 -> 07:24 PM) They didn't even keep the talent level around him the same... I'd argue they are better than they were for a large chunk of last season. They lost Gordon, but replaced him with Salmons, Miller, a heatlhy Hinrich, and a healthy Deng.

Official 2009-2010 NFL Thread
QUOTE (ChWRoCk2 @ Nov 1, 2009 -> 03:08 PM) It is terrible. Was a problem last year and they did nothing to fix it. Hopefully TT spends some money on offensive linemen in the offseason or drafts a player or two. The Vikings defensive line is still hard to stop regardless of whom you put out there. Edwards, Allen and the Williams wall is tough to stop. Pack are looking to break the sacks against record. I was actually talking about the Bears oline, but the Packers oline sucks too. Ain't as bad as the Bears though. Rodgers holds onto the ball for extended periods of time.

The oline is quite possibly the worse oline I've ever seen.
