  1. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 08:31 PM) Why, with the success of Jordan Danks, and the semi-success of John Shelby would this organization still think that toolsy project OF is still a priority with our first pick? Maybe because they had success with Danks they would be well suited to find another. THey also have zero other outfield prospects for the most part and its a very important position (3 starters at the major league level) so it makes a lot of sense, imo.
  2. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 08:28 PM) I want Ev Williams more than Mitchell or Trout. Trout seems to have a really low ceiling, and I just don't want to hear the Rowand comparisons. A friend of mine who works for the Cubs think they'll have a chance at Kyle Gibson. Gibson is falling and It is understandable. No one is going to get to see him pitch and prove that its just really a stress fracture. So because of it a team that takes a shot might luck out or they might be screwed. I won't kill the Sox if they pass on him cause I don't think he's an elite arm. I will be pretty f***ing pissed if we pass on Scheppers cause he has that special arm thats worth taking a chance on.
  3. QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 08:26 PM) To be honest, I'm more of a Mitchell fan than most on this board that I have read. I wouldn't be terribly upset with the pick. I think he fits nicely into the possibility of the CF leadoff role, almost in line with Allen, Flowers, Danks, Beckham, Retherford's timetable. I'm definately not opposed. I love tools and he's got em. Plus he was drafted originally by the Twins who usually know a thing or two. The question is will the Twins pass up on him? Probably cause I know they are looking more at pitching and I think they'll take Storen if he falls to them. Really sounds like he's going @10 to the Nats.
  4. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 08:22 PM) What type of power does Mitchell have? Is he from the Owens school or can he hit the ball into the gap? He improved a ton this past season which is a good sign. But he's still very very raw. Good to solid power.
  5. QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 08:21 PM) Mitchell is the type of toolsy hole-in-the-swing player that the previous scouting regime would have loved to take at the top of the draft. Multi-sport athlete with a hole in the swing? Check. Technically speaking, Lauman is all about the athletes as is Kenny so it fits more into the current regimes MO. I know they took Anderson and Fields in the past as well, but for the most part they stayed away from the big outfielders. I still think one of Lauman's best picks was the Chris Young selection and I hope he can find us another one of them (not becuase YOung became a star, but because he had awesome trade value for a latter round selection).
  6. Considering how close this team is to a rebuilding mode, I hope they realize that it would be very very smart to spend money in this draft, especially when there are bound to be a good group of players available in the first 4-5 rounds and than plenty more guys that fall who could be good options.
  7. I say all this about the Sox taking a prep outfielder potentially and than I read this: I know a lot of people don't like MItchell and I agree his K rate is flat out alarming but he does at least have a ton of tools. I like him a lot more than Brett Jackson of Cal. If you go the college OF route it comes down to two players Mitchell and Pollack. MItchell has far more tools, Pollack has good tools, polish and baseball skills. The Sox would have to pay Williams at least slot money so that might scare them off, but hopefully they can get comfortable with one of the prep outfielders.
  8. They both suck. I think we'll see Pods play CF when Quentin comes back with BA moving to the bench but if Pods hits the DL or he starts to not perform we'll see Jordan Danks promoted.
  9. Lauman hasn't been afraid of taking prep players and the Sox never have been opposed to it. I believe Lauman was behind the Honel selection, which was the last prep we took in the first round. I'd agree they tend to take college guys in the first round and if we go with a pitcher I expect a college guy but if they take the route of a hitter it will likely be a prep.
  10. Bailey would be a great get. We'd have to go over slot money for him though but I have heard rumblings that we nab a catcher early in the draft so maybe its him. I also recall reading where Lauman indicated that the Sox could spend money if there was a really good player they liked on the board.
  11. I assume if he rakes we'd see him go to short season, but he could just stay there as well. It wouldn't shock me either way as the young dominican guys can get brought up really slowly and he is still incredibly young, even if his age is wrong by a year or so. Oh and it is in just 6 games (3 hr's, 11 RBI's).
  12. I don't know what we paid him, but if it is a few hundred K I hate it. We are having the draft and I want the Sox pouring every bit of resource into the draft and than into the July 2nd international signing period (try to find a guy or two).
  13. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 08:06 PM) I love being agreed with. I have no idea why Dominguez isn’t more highly rated. He’s a bit raw in a lot of areas, but he’s absolutely explosive with the bat. I've been raving about him for a while and than after seeing him play in person, holy moly. Albeit I happened to see him just crush the ball in two of his AB's and make two very good plays at 3rd base. I still don't know if he'll make it at 3rd and he defiantely doesn't have a killer arm but he's really a good athlete and I think he'll f***ing rake fastballs. So he should be fine to produce in at least the minors.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 08:04 PM) Given that Allen could steal about 15 and has pretty good range in the field, a slight dip in power wouldn't kill us. Completely agree. I'm not overly concerned and I like his swing a lot. Looks like he's got a hitters swing, meaning that I think he'll hit for at least a good average, which is a big plus, imo. Between him, Viciedo, Beck's and hopefully Danks we'll have 4 guys that hit .280 plus, a couple that have a shot at hitting well over .300, imo. Than there is Flowers who is the pure power threat with hopefully a .260-.275 avg, a heck of a high OBP and 40 HR power. I usually don't like those all of nothing guys but when its from the catcher spot, combined with the fact that the other guys look to hit for a good average and appear to have the tools to be good pure hitters that you can totally handle a guy that hits more for pure power.

QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 08:00 PM) I think he's a potential 30+ HR guy. He hit 29 homers last year between Winston-Salem and Birmingham. I think he's just in a power slump right now. He had 14 HR's last year in 153 at-bats for Birmingham, but only 7 in 218 at-bats so far this year. However, if you want to look at it in another way. He has hit 21 homers in his last 371 at-bats in Birmingham, a pitchers park. I think he's overdue for a 5 HR 2 week type span soon. He's my favorite prospect we have. He has the speed, power, and defensive potential to be a very good one at 1B. I don't know if he'll hit 40 Hr's, but you might be right and i wouldn't be shocked if he ended up with 35, but I also wouldn't be shocked if he was more of a 20-30 HR guy. He's got a nice swing though and really keeps getting better and improving his game.
  16. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 07:55 PM) I wouldn't be surprised to see A.J. Pollock slip out of the 1st round. I think teams are starting to look at him and saying to themselves, "He's a good player, but perhaps we want someone with more upside in the first." If we don't go with him at 23 (I doubt we would), and if falls to 38, that'd be fantastically awesome. He's likely never gonna be some great player, but if you could get a decent average at around .280 with a .350 OBP, ~800 OPS, about 10 homers, and 20 SB potential and solid D in CF or LF, that's a really solid ball player to have on your team. I don't think he gets past the Cubs, unless of course someone else falls in there laps.
  17. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 07:52 PM) I highly doubt we go with a toolsy athletic but raw HS player. Trout is the exception though cause he's really not that raw and quite advanced for a HS player, IMO, and he fits what we look for in baseball players. The Sox have never shyed on prep outfielders so I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them grab one of Trout/Everette/Fuentes. Not at all.
  18. Hadn't seen any mention of hit, but he's hitting well over .300 with 3 HR's already. He got big money and I know there was talk about how legit he is and if he's really as young as they say but either way its good to see him producing. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...&pid=534649
  19. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 07:48 PM) Ima throw this out there, and I believe it was Jas who wrote about this kid here, but I can definitely see the sox taking Blash (has got some holes, but has upside) say around 7th-10th round for a good value pick. Former Sox selection so I fully expect us to grab him at one point in the draft. On a sidenote, heres Mayo's latest mock. Has us still going with a toolsy prep outfielder which it sounds like he's either hearing or thinking. Originally had Trout, now has Everette Williams going to us. Tanner Scheppers and Kyle Gibson are both on the board when we pick too. Gibson falls all the way to the end of the 1st round, Scheppers goes to the Mariners. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...9&fext=.jsp

Allen has power potential, but I think he's more or less going to be a 20-30HR guy and nothing more. Not a bad thing if he can hit for a good average and draw walks, all from the left side of the plate.
  21. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 07:28 PM) That was a very heartless performance by the Tigers. I also bet their fans are fuming about Ordonez and Cabrera cracking up in the dugout after Bonderman was pulled and sitting next to them. Jose was flat out awesome though. He had pop to the fastball and more importantly his delivery was very smooth and hitters had a hell of a time deciphering between a FB and a splitter and if thats the case well game over.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 07:30 PM) Would you rather he hit .300 with 10 homers this year or .270 with 20 homers? Honestly, I could care less, either would be fine. I'm ont concerned about his power and I think he might be the type of guy that hits .330 at the major league level with tons of power. HE's got such quick hands and a beautiful approach at the plate (great swing, great plate coverage, ability to hit to all fields). The only thing he lacks is a tremendous eye, but the guys going to be a f***ing offensive stud.
  23. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 07:15 PM) I agree, I wouldn't mind drafting him at all. He's got a ton of power, has a really strong arm and is a solid defender at 3B, and has surprisingly good speed for a guy his size. He's a really good athlete. If he can figure it out with the bat, he could be a solid player in the league. Wait, the guy can hit like nobodies business. Massive power, good average. I don't know if it'll project in the majors but I love the s*** out of his offensive ability. Defensively, well, don't know if he'll stick or not but I have little doubt that he'll rake in the minors (at least in the minors). Imo, he was the best offensive 3rd baseman in the college this past season.
  24. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 06:30 PM) And as T'bolt stated, I'd love to take a chance on Chris Dominguez. Those are the type of guys that even if they are only AAAA players, you can still trade them and get good value. He's a sick looking athlete, quick hands, everything. I think he'll rake his first couple years. Don't know if he has the defensive position but I see him moving up the systems quickly and really having a lot of value as a prospect at the very least. Don't know if he'll be able to stay at 3rd or not, but he's lean and strong as f***.
