The starting pitcher the White Sox WILL acquire
Chisoxfn replied to Steve9347's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 27, 2009 -> 12:50 PM) Look at the signs: Dbacks are Wayyyy out of it Sox deal with AZ consistently dbacks could use some young pitching for their already talented rotation He's already the 3rd highest paid player and starting next year willl be the 2nd highest paid then will be the highest paid. Garland is gone after this season. Webb only has ONE more year under contract then will need to be resigned or replaced. Sox have 2 starters to offer for now and at least 1 to contribute in a few seasons. If the Sox wanted to, they could probably get one of the Dbacks higher paid players off there hands as well. Say they wanted a Jon Garland as well, they Sox would probably actually be able to get him and actually be able to give up less for Haren (although not much less). I personally would make a deal for Haren involving any three of our pitching prospects. I don't think thats enough though. -

Haren's a f***ing stud. I'd be all over him or Webb if they were available. -
Badass, just picked up my tickets to see Strausburg in action on Friday against Virginia. Will be hitting up the Fullerton regional later on in the weekend.

Wow, I'm excited at the thought. Plus Shaq is like one of my all time favorite players.
-
I saw Maxwell pitch down in Arizona this year and I was thoroughly unimpressed.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 27, 2009 -> 10:05 AM) I would love that. Reason being... its brilliant. he's not very good now, we all know that... but luol deng's contract is horrible and he's signed for like 4 years after this. So we'd lose that contract and get to enjoy funny Shaq quotes for a year. Plus Shaq can still score and is a big body in the middle.
-
That would be a fantastic trade for the Bulls. They'd be ridding themselves of Deng's contract and getting a nice big man presence who could also be a great lobbyist for you in the summer of 2010. Heck, maybe Shaq even likes it in Chicago that he takes a discount to play a 20mpg role for another year or two on a potential championship contender. I f***ing love it, love it.

I'm a f***ing idiot. I said all season that Cleveland had Lebron and nothing and than somehow decided that they'd destroy the Magic. Boy was I wrong.

QUOTE (beautox @ May 26, 2009 -> 07:27 PM) danks goes deep!!! what is everyone's opinion on his floor, median and ceiling? Danks floor is a good defensive outfielder. Not quite a BA, but a guy that has a bench spot. His median is a Mark Kotsay type of player and his ceiling is a Sizemore or Granderson. Yes, he's that f***ing good of an athlete. This is coming from someone whose raved about him long before he was in the Sox system.

QUOTE (Molto @ May 27, 2009 -> 09:40 AM) I agree, although I also agree that if he keeps having success, pitchers will throw inside on him. Not as retaliation, but just to make him think twice. If this is going to make him successful, it's in the pitchers best interest to stop him from doing it. Throwing inside may do that. Yep and thats baseball. You always try to do what you can to stop someone from being sucessful and I'm sure the pitchers will start to bust Pods in and even hit him to see if it can work to get him out of his rhythm.

QUOTE (lostfan @ May 27, 2009 -> 06:46 AM) I'm not going to say I would've predicted it, but the Sox tend to play well in Anaheim. Recently yes, historically, no. I've seen a ton of beat downs of my Sox in Anaheim.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ May 26, 2009 -> 10:38 PM) I caught the last two outs. Hawk and Stoney were raving about the defense. Was it that good? Damn shame that with the game being on WCIU that there won't be a replay. Ya, the defense was awesome. Nix and Ramirez both had two plays that were amazing. Pods had a nice DP.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 27, 2009 -> 09:34 AM) The economy is the X-Factor here, but the Astros have shown no signs that it's a huge concern for them. I'd agree that Poreda should be the prize of this deal in a realistic world. Oh and than the next question is what do the Astros want the most, Pitching/Hitting, etc. Are they looking for a quick fix, etc. I just don't know with there situation but I do know they have very little quality talent in there system so they'd probably be going best players and if I were them I'd start by asking for Poreda, Beckham, and Danks.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 26, 2009 -> 05:50 PM) Its obviously working for him, therefore the pitcher has to do something to make it less successful. I don't think its bush league, dusting him is akin to a pitcher dusting a guy after he homers off him. That I agree with. But Hawk is making it sound as if it is some unwritten rule that you don't do what Scotty is doing and I don't see whats wrong with it.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 27, 2009 -> 09:30 AM) Because it's Wednesday at 12:39, and i'm unemployed at the moment? The point was more that you'd have to put up a better package. Start with Poreda. A package of Poreda, Shelby, Omogrosso would be a nice starting point, imo. See where things go from there. Bottom line, your offer didn't even have one of our 5 best prospects invovled in the trade and that is in a deal to get us one of the premiere arms in baseball. I'd say the above offer I made probably gets laughed at, the only difference is in this economy the economic savings from getting rid of Oswalts deal would be worth a substantial value, imo. But Houston isn't in the same shape that San Diego was.
-
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 27, 2009 -> 09:21 AM) Hypothetically, if we could get Oswalt for Shelby, Cook, Retherford, and Omogrosso. Would you do it? Umm, why even discuss this. The only way that deal gets done is if the Astros need to get rid of Oswalts contract and if they really really love Omogrosso and Shelby. Omogrosso is the best piece in that deal and thats coming from a guy that really likes Shelby. I think once Shelby figures things out he'll hit for a very high average but he's more of a sleeper than a drop dead stud prospect. Omogrosso has a mid 90's fastball and now that he's healthy and past his blister problems he's been pretty dominating. I haven't seen enough of him as a starter (the few times I've seen him pitch have been in shorter, relief outings) to know whether he has enough secondary pitches to make it as a starter but again, if the Astros felt he did, than the value of the package increases. And either way, I'd make the deal in a heartbeat. I'd even be willing to give up a Carter, Hudson, etc. I doubt the Stros do though.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 27, 2009 -> 09:16 AM) Frankly, it's a deal I don't make. I think we'd be overpaying as written, even if Poreda is just a Matt Thornton clone. If we were desperate for pitching, which we're not, and we had a glut of highly performing Middle Infielders, I could see us making that move based around Alexei, but not with the other 2 added in. Lower guys. One other thing to keep in mind when Considering Alexei...we have another Cuban whose decision to sign with us likely involved the presence of 2 other Cubans in our organization. I think the Sox are desperate for pitching, in the sense, that we have zero players in our system currently who project to be a #1 or #2 starter. So I'd say that could make it a serious need, especially given the fact that the team has quite a few offensive minded prospects, one of which (our #1 prospect) plays the same position as Ramirez.

QUOTE (qwerty @ May 27, 2009 -> 08:05 AM) Check out oswalts first half and second half numbers from last season. He looks to be far from done to me, and what i have been hearing. Oswalt has been overthrowing his fastball and especially his curveball the entire season and therefore missing his spots. The 11 homeruns oswalt has given up this season, in only 62.1 innings pitched, would be more discouraging if not for how oswalt performed in the second half last season. Last season oswalt threw 23 homeruns, 5 more than his previous career, out of those 23 only 5 came in the second half. He is hands down one of the very best pitchers in the game. And he's done it pitching at a launching pad. I was hesitant of Oswalt but I have taken a bit more of a look and he's not as bad of an option, assuming you can get him for a bit less than Peavy.
-
QUOTE (WCSox @ May 26, 2009 -> 08:27 PM) Since completing a deal for Peavy clearly means that the Sox are going for it NOW (rather than next year when Thome and Dye are gone, or the following year when Paulie is gone), methinks that Kenny would be perfectly fine with a lesser financial commitment to an older pitcher like Oswalt. Trust me, the Sox are looking at a 3-5 year window right now, so any pitcher they get has to fit into the plan that they'll be able to help the Sox compete for the next 3 to 5 years, well, as long as its a pitcher you have to give up substantial talent for. Roy Oswalt probably isn't near the top of there list. Unless the price isn't that substantial. For example, if you could get Oswalt without giving up Richard (so same package as Peavy hypothetically, less Richard, than I'd understand a bit more).

The starting pitcher the White Sox WILL acquire
Chisoxfn replied to Steve9347's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Cabrera's velocity in Washington has been way down and that was one of the big reasons he had such upside. Without that velocity and with his command, he's flat out atrocious. I was a big backer of trying to get Cabrera at the right price and seeing if a change of scenery would work, but I wouldn't bend over backwards to get him. That said, I wouldn't mind the signing as long as it was as a minor leaguer knowing he has a shot, but he'd have to pitch his way to the majors. I wouldn't want him signed to be on our 25 man roster currently. -
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 27, 2009 -> 08:49 AM) Ramirez, Hudson, and Poreda Get it done, KW! /annoying trade maker-upper guy I think thats a deal the Giants consider, but only if Hudson and Poreda are going to another team for another bat. The Giants have two pitching prospects in the system at a much more elite level than Hudson/Poreda are and because of that they'll be looking primarily for offense. So if the Sox can get a 3rd team involved and use Hudson/Poreda to get one more good bat, well than you might have a deal. And its a deal I make.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 27, 2009 -> 08:47 AM) Poreda would fall in to the "Might be nice" category for the Giants. He might be nice, but he doesn't fill their needs; all he does is give them an extra year or two before their pitcher becomes expensive/FA. They have pitching. They need a bat. Guys I wouldn't part with for Cain: Quentin Beckham Viciedo Ramirez D2: the Mighty Danks Flowers (he's the right value level...but that's where Posey plays and frankly we need a catcher at some point in the next year or two) Guys I might part with that they might actually be interested in: Allen Anderson/Fields (although we've pretty well managed to destroy their trade value haven't we) Getz Shelby Etc. I don't know if Allen would interest them, but he might well be the best fit as a deal centerpiece, unless we can sell them on Brian Anderson (frankly, I think they'd be smart to try to get him, but considering how determined we are to put him on the bench I doubt they'd figure that out) A deal won't get done with what you are dangling. The Giants best offensive prospects are a young internationally signed first baseman and Buster Posey © so they have no interest in Allen. Andesron and Fields have no trade value, Getz is a nice piece to the Sox but on the open market he's a throw in type of guy, Shelby again, solid value as a 3rd or 4th piece, probably worth more to the Sox. So given who you'd actually part with, there is a negative % chance that a deal gets done. I personally would consider doing Quentin for Cain. Call me crazy, but with all of our bats in the system, I'd potentially be willing to take a chance, especially given Quentin's checkered past (in regards to injuries). That said, it would be a real real tough decision and I think there might be better guys out there where we don't have to dangle CQ or other ways to get deals done without doing Quentin. Oh and one note, I'll take Cain over Oswalt every day of the week on this club. We don't need a pitcher whose at or near the end of his prime, I want one entering his prime.

QUOTE (everafan @ May 27, 2009 -> 08:42 AM) If there was a GM that would do it, it would be Sabean. Is Sabean that bad of a GM? San Fran was a very competitive team for a long time and while they are in a rebuilding mode right now, they already have two front of the rotation young guns (Linnecum and Cain) but they have a couple stud guys down in AA (the two youngest AA pitchers). Those young guys allow them to move Cain but I wont' lie, it doesn't make sense for San Fran unless they get a franchise type of bat.
-
QUOTE (Special K @ May 27, 2009 -> 08:03 AM) I heard on the Score 670 yesterday during Mike Murphy's show when he had a beat reporter for the Sun Times on air, that the KW is pursuing Matt Cain pretty hard. Im not trying to start any rumors or anything, I just wanted to know if anyone has heard any truth to this and possibly get a little feedback. Cain is a name I threw out when the Peavy stuff started dying down and this is a name that I love. He's having the best season of his career, is still very young, and at least has the stuff to really excel in the AL. The big questions are the price it would take to get him (the Giants are looking for bats that they can put in there lineup today and I don't know if the Sox have those guys so I'd assume a 3rd team, looking to sell a big name bat, would be involved). I just know that I am a big Cain fan and think he'd be an excellent addition to go along side Buehrle/Danks/Floyd/Richard.

I still don't really get why it is considered bush league. It isn't like your looking back and stealing a pitch location or something. Or even messing with the pitchers rhthym. How is it any different than someone having a unique way to open there swing, ie, Sheffield with his bat wag, etc.
