I didn't think Brothers was one of the Rocks targets.

THE OFFICIAL SOXTALK 2009 MLB DRAFT THREAD
Turner is the top prep RHP in the country. Tigers got great value here but will have to pay a lot. The more MLB ready guys like Crow/Scheppers get past them though. The more of those guys fall, the more likely a team like the Cards takes one of them (or one of the top preps) giving the sox a shot at Brothers.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 03:38 PM) i wouldn't be suprised to see Sheppers either. Scheppers ain't going here. Crow might, but I think they go with one of the prep arms, maybe White.

Leake's far better than Minor, but White has better upside. That said I like Leake more than most. Still, White has such a good arm.

Reds are going to get a great arm in White. The Tigers are the first key pick of the draft. No one knows what they'll do.

Awful pick. Far worse than the Sanchez one, imo. Sanchez is a catcher that can hit and while he was overdrafted catchers that can hit have value. #3 starters do too, but you dont' take them this early.

I'm closing this thread. It was embarassing.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 03:26 PM) Are we expected to be going for a catcher with one of our first few picks? I hope we do. I would have liked Sanchez somewhere in there, and everything I read seemed to think he was grossly overpicked there. They are planning on signing the top July 2nd guy. Ie, a big time International Signing (the signing period begins on July 2nd).

THE OFFICIAL SOXTALK 2009 MLB DRAFT THREAD
QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 03:20 PM) Couldn't agree more. Money for young guys shouldn't be a factor, as you're talking about 3 years of extremely cheap contracts for them before arbitration. Think of it this way though, you spend $6M on the top pick or $3M on it and than have an extra $3M to give to guys that slid. I'd probably go that route more often than not, however, MLB frowns upon you going over slot money so you'd put yourself in a poor position there and we know the Sox tend not to do that. That said, considering the high picks we had, I'd rather spread it nicely through a few guys, unless that rare talent came, in which case you give them that money. Scheppers and Crow are guys that just are head and shoulders above everything else on the board at 23, imo (if they are in fact there). Gibson, maybe, but I don't put him on the same level as Scheppers/Crow, but I also don't think Gibson asks for as much money, imo.

THE OFFICIAL SOXTALK 2009 MLB DRAFT THREAD
Are the Tigers really going to end up passing on Crow? Atlanta is going to make a f***ing atrocious pick in Minor. Not because Minor is bad, but because Minor doesn't have much upside and really is a #3 starter at best. You don't use a top 10 pick on a guy with #3 in the rotation upside.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 03:19 PM) I really hope the Sox realize the talent Crow is and take him if he slips that far. Mid-high 90s fastball with great control and blew away the Cape Cod league. I don't understand why 4 million is too much for him. The best part is how he commands his fastball. That will allow him to be a very sucessful big league starter as well as enable him to move through the minors quickly. Him or Scheppers would fit in great with Danks/Floyd/Richard/Poreda/Buehrle (obviously that is 5 guys, but injuries happen and some guys don't pan out or move to the pen).

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 03:18 PM) Jacob Marisnick tweeted that if you had a Facebook page, one organization wouldn't draft you. Weird. Also, someone needs to be quicker at waking up Bud Selig. Hopefully it isn't the Sox.

There is some speculation that the Pads have zero intent on signing him in a payroll cutting move and will just be content putting out a lowball offer and than getting one pick lower next year.

QUOTE (zenryan @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 03:16 PM) 3. Padres Donovan Tate OF Cartersville High Georgia Also a football player who signed with UNC. Tate would have probably gone to Oakland at 13, otherwise he'd have been long gone. Pads are going to shell out some dough to sign him, probably takes 4-5M, he's asking for 6.

THE OFFICIAL SOXTALK 2009 MLB DRAFT THREAD
Mizzu guys might collapse. Gibson and Crow would be there when the Sox pick, Goldstein is hearing Gibson is out of the 1st round. However, with the prep demands it could get interesting. Also, it isn't just the top prep guys but apparently teams have been talking and guys slated in the 2-5 rounds are also asking for a lot more than expected. This could get really interesting and we might seeing more talent going in the 10-20 rounds due to guys falling for signability reasons than ever before. Hell we might see the 15th round having more talent than the 7th round, for example.

Just some previews...were blurbing about some rumors, specifically the 2 guys tied to the Sox and the other position they are looking at as well as some news on a minor league promotion. We also set it up so that any updates from potential Sox selections that are on Twitter will show up. Right now were following Storen, Stout, and Arnett...all three are potential selections. www.twitter.com/futuresox

Draft rumors?
It is an urban myth that high school guys are the more upside/higher ceiling pick. That said, there is a shot they take one in the first, but than I think they'll focus on some college arms (they tend to like college arms a lot more). They'll look at catcher too but they'll probably go heavy on the pitching and outfield side early in the draft. I'd like them to nab a 3rd baseman and catcher in the first seven rounds though.

Colon to DL
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 01:34 PM) So keeping the youth talking going. How long until we see Danks 2.0? Well when Quentin comes back, Pods moves to CF and than once Pods struggles or the team falls out of play (or Q gets hurt again), than you'll see Danks come up. But right now, I don't think you see him. Probably at least a month away. A big losing streak could obviously change things and push up his timetable.

2009 MLB Pre-Draft Discussion
Heyman of SI is reporting that the signing deadline will be August 17th this year as opposed to the 15th. It is because the 15th falls on a Saturday. This gives teams two additional days to get someone signed.

Thats how they made room for Poreda. Makes sense, Contreras moves into the rotation.

SI: MLB Team by Team Draft Rankings Past 10 Years
QUOTE (gsoxs1 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:04 AM) Wow. Reading this makes me depressed about how bad our team has drafted over the years. Are biggest steal was Matt Guerrier(10th round in 99). I don't remmember him being that good. Current Key players Fields, Getz, and Richard. Verdict is still out on all 3, but seems like Fields might be on his way out. Link http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writ...tml?eref=sihpT1 Chris Young and Mark Buehrle have to be considered steals as well.

Draft rumors?
QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 01:21 PM) How long do you think C Luke Bailey will last? He just said TJS so it's likely he'll make it out of the first round and go anywhere after that. Another solid catching prospect is something we need with possibility of Tyler Flowers moving from there. Sox have been tied to some catchers and Lauman seemed to indicate they will have an interest grabbing one early in the draft (1st 5 rounds). Bailey is a nice looking prep who will go anywhere from the 2nd round to the 5th round and will take above slot money to sign. My guess is it takes probably 1-2M to get him signed as he was a lock to go in the 1st prior to the injury.
