  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 8, 2009 -> 11:21 PM) If the White Sox signed him to play CF, I'm fairly confident the White Sox would have the worst OF defense in the major leagues this year, and maybe of all time. If Wise has to play, move him down in the order. Let BA play, but don't have him leadoff. I still don't know why the White Sox seem to insist the CF must lead off. I was kidding. He can't play CF, but he can still hit.
  2. I just saw that Wells Fargo had "record breaking profits" this quarter. I haven't read the details, but the market is up 2.5% on this. I'll have to snoop around to see if I can find out why, because honestly that doesn't make sense, unless this is the m2m adjustment.
  3. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 8, 2009 -> 04:38 PM) Someone like Frank Catalanotto five years ago would have been perfect, if he could actually play CF adequately. That's the problem...there are a lot of corner outfielders that can give you decent numbers offensively, but the combination of the range and defensive ability AND the 350+ OBP is much harder to come by. It doesn't even have to be a player with blinding speed (and BA definitely isn't that), but then the leadoff issue comes up in combination, we've been talking about this over and over and over again for months with no easy solutions. I'm sure that quote was taken out of context...and made to look more dramatic. It was probably something along the lines of he was the best of the FEW/LIMITED options immediately available and they weren't ready to move Getz up until he got his feet under him and a little confidence to start the season. Catalanotto is available (at least he was) and he batted well over .300 this spring.
  4. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Apr 8, 2009 -> 10:15 PM) Why shouldn't Wise be booed? He sucks, plain and simple; Wise has been a bad ballplayer his entire career and is still making a go at it. It's great to appreciate the effort he's making, but to not boo him would be like voting for that crappy oblivious kid on American Idol, because "you don't want him to know how bad he really is." Because it's not Wise's fault he's getting trotted out there for something he's not able to do.
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 8, 2009 -> 05:29 PM) Honestly, Huh? Totally lost me there. Oh, I was saying that my 401K is a mere pittance and 20% of nothing is something (play on words).
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 8, 2009 -> 05:12 PM) If I had anything more than a pittance in the markets that's exactly what I'd have done when it crossed 8000 again as well. It'll drop again until the next round of bailouts come through. Meh, it's a pittance. But 20% of nothing is something, you know?
  7. IMO, Roubini's right on this one. I'm cashing out tomorrow... after my 20% pickup since the beginning of March. When the banks report earnings, things are going to plummet again.
  8. QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 8, 2009 -> 03:42 PM) All right, I'll bite. I think a society is the most efficient when it functions as a collective unit where everyone has the same goal or concept in mind (I guess loosely defined the well-being of their society). In fact I can't think of a single historical example where this is not the case. Government (at all levels) can accomplish some of these things, for many others, it can't. However, this does not mean that the lowest levels of society (individuals, families, communities) should not be the strongest units. They just need to be provided resources to reach their full potential, and when they can, they'll make the best decisions for that society and find the best way they can contribute to it. Free enterprise with the least amount of government interference possible is the best way to handle the economy, but I also don't think the market is the end-all/be-all to itself and I'm realistic about the government sometimes needing to intervene. Anyone else? This is a good post. I'll comment later... leaving for softball. Game #4 of the season. In this league, I'm batting 1.000.
  9. QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 8, 2009 -> 03:07 PM) I could answer it in detail but I think you know what I'm going to say if you've read enough of my posts. My point for asking the question is the two are absolutes on a continuum. I want to know what people's views of this are, especially you libs. Seriously. I want to understand where some of your viewpoints come from.
  10. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Apr 8, 2009 -> 03:25 PM) Postage depends on weight, also with tax documents a lot of people do return receipt, that way they have proof the IRS received it. ^^^^^^^^^ Absolutely key if you are not filing electronically.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 8, 2009 -> 03:04 PM) Personally, I'm hoping the President decides to use his newly given powers to spy on every single Republican voter, organizer, candidate, or media figure in the 2012 campaign. Put Nixon to shame. Congress has declared it newly legal again, so why not? Go for it. In fact, REALLY go for it. You know, since Republicans obviously did that and more.
  12. The only way this gets "resolved" is if it gives Obama political cover to opportunitively beat the s*** out of the last administration. That's been his M.O. so far.
  13. QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 8, 2009 -> 01:59 PM) It isn't an absolute yes-or-no question, kap. I know that. That's why I want some people to answer to it. But I see no one is going to take it seriously... so that in and of itself answers the question.
  14. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 8, 2009 -> 01:03 PM) I don't see the relevance. We aren't remotely close to a collectivism society not matter how much you want to think so. Really? I agree, but we're heading that way... more in the last 10 weeks then I've seen in my lifetime. And when you factor in the last 6 months, we've REALLY headed for it. And yes, I blame GWB for that. But I'd still like some thought out answers on this question... and I won't be a dick. I just want to know what people think about that question and why.
  15. Question for all you lovers of this clip. Do you support indivudualism as opposed to collectivism? Why or why not? And yes, I'm being serious.
  16. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 8, 2009 -> 11:11 AM) Why no HBO though? They have it in their highest teir. You can get it separate if you want it though.
  17. QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 8, 2009 -> 09:47 AM) Yeah I know you couldn't wait to say this, but the linked article didn't even say anything like that. They dismissed a lawsuit against the Bush administration based on reasons stated above. I'll save my indignation for when/if the Obama admin actually breaks the law. Seriously, Obama hasn't changed anything like these laws. He's doing the same exact thing. And honestly, it doesn't bother me.
  18. QUOTE (longshot7 @ Apr 8, 2009 -> 09:38 AM) The other issues is that the people who perpetrated the warrantless wiretapping in the Bush Admin need to be PROSECUTED - and this is disappointing that it looks like Obama's DOJ won't do that. I mean, the 4th Amendment is pretty clear - people that go around it need to be taught a lesson. No, in fact, Obama's DOJ is doing the same thing. Oops. We should PROSECUTE them, too! (Like that will ever happen).
  19. QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Apr 8, 2009 -> 09:15 AM) It's not just one game. It was all spring where he drew ZERO walks and proved he wasn't a capable leadoff hitter. When I booed yesterday, it wasn't directed at Wise, who I know was busting his butt, but instead it was directed at Kenny and Ozzie. Kenny for letting it get to this point, and Ozzie for being so blind in ST, yet still hitting Wise leadoff. Wise is a 4th or 5th OF, not a starter, and definitely not a leadoff hitter. It's baseball suicide to grant the most plate appearances to your worst offensive player. And that right there is the money quote of the season.
  20. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 8, 2009 -> 09:00 AM) Jeep is their only brand that makes money. Chrysler is in deep doo-doo, and I'd be surprised if they even exist in anything like their current form by 2011. Chrysler will be gone in two months.
  21. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 8, 2009 -> 08:49 AM) LINK I don't know how to say this any other way, but SUV's are what people want. If that's what they want, then make them. Simple supply and demand. I guess we should all just drive those GM segways, right?
  22. QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 7, 2009 -> 11:39 PM) You Wise haters are out of control. My guess is he won't be playing much longer. He's gonna be booed out of the Cell every time he makes an out. He's this year's Paulie so far. The hatred is amazing. We all know he's a below average big leaguer. Might as well boo Oz every time he steps out of the dugout and write letters to Kenny. They are the ones playing him. We won the f***ing game. I'm happy with that. Wise's sucky performance doesn't matter. We won. But he's going to lose a lot of f***ing games by being out there. One swing is all that kept him from being a major reason for losing today. It's been a hole for 3 f***ing years. Fix it, already.
  23. QUOTE (T R U @ Apr 7, 2009 -> 11:32 PM) No walks from our hitters.. im done with this swing for the fences, slow footed team Really? GTFO, because that's all you are going to get this year.
  24. QUOTE (The Beast @ Apr 7, 2009 -> 11:36 PM) Do you guys want to get tickets on the day of for the game? I'm all for playing softball, but I was curious if we were all going to the game afterwards in a specific section. That's usually the plan.
