  1. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Feb 25, 2006 -> 04:52 PM) We choose to be free and democratic. We didn't have another country invade us and force us to do that. True or untrue, why do you feel this way? Why the negativity?
  2. You know, there are some people who are HONORING the old bands. But I guess they're right that most are just stealing. 50's and 60's Clones
  3. QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 08:17 PM) Kap, the Maquilla will have some items that are not time sensitive that gets back loaded as space permits. Since many of the fees are based on truck costs, only in rare cases will they ship LTLs. Of course YMMV, and smaller maquillas may not have that luxery, but the Johnson Controls, Delphi, Emersons, etc. all try and fill every truck crossing the bridge. Either LTLs or their own, it's still trucked. That was my point, and you're right about that. But oh so wrong in so many others.
  4. QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 07:44 PM) Resume Highlights Executive Director, South Texas Manufacturers Association Member Maquilla Association If we are talking steel, cars, logs, then yes, sea is still a viable option. If we are talking electronic devices, and other high dollar, lighter product, it is going air. There just is no justification when you can fill a plane and have it here tonight to wait 6-8 weeks. Via letter of credit, I can have my invoice paid and in my account while you're still wondering if the ship cleared that tropical storm. Big difference between Mexico and China. And most of that stuff is not air cargo, it's LTL.
  5. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 07:36 PM) I know its highly unlikely - but that is the way I'd like it to be. In the short run, since marriage is probably a legal fact here to stay, I just don't want to see the Feds do anything to ban a certain type of marriage. I think its hateful and unconstitutional. That is true. The government (at least at the federal level) needs to stay the hell out of this issue.
  6. Oh, and one other point. Those toys that come for Christmas from China, they're in the ports in September. Just an FYI from someone who was in 'da biz'.
  7. Well, I have to go do some real work now. Lunchtime is over. On the aircargo issue, the capacity is so small compared to the freighliners and the cost is so prohibitive, that's why it is not true, among other reasons. Don't kill each other.
  8. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 07:31 PM) So outrageously wrong that I've never seen anything wronger in my life. So wrong that other patently wrong things seem right by comparison. So wrong that we should start calling Tex "Wrongy Wrongington." Everybody pile on! Damn, the flames are coming out now. It must be boring at work today for all of us.
  9. Not that good. It's only a small point of his larger one. I just wanted to correct him.
  10. QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 07:29 PM) This would take a major rewrite of our legal system. From one perspective, a marriage is a legal merger of two entities. They are in most cases now responsiible for and to each other. We would also have to rewrite laws regarding testifying against your spouse. We would have to rewrite a host of laws. Far better IMHO, is making this legal merger just that, a legal merger. Let the Churches handle a religious union, let the government handle the legal stuff. Isn't that kind of what happens now? Or am I misunderstanding your point?
  11. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 07:28 PM) Absolutely 100% wrong. Who, Tex or me?
  12. QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 07:25 PM) As far as cargo, air freight is making ocean shipments almost a thing of the past. Companies do not want their products tied up in shipping the length of time it takes to ship via sea. The objective of modern manufacturing is get your raw material processed and to the customer as quickly as possible. You're absolutely wrong on this.
  13. QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 07:12 PM) Another interesting fact, unless I've been totally misinformed, is that China owns all land adjacent to both sides of the Panama Canal. You see, that's why global warming is allowed to happen under GWB's watch. It makes the Panama Canal less important if the artic ice caps melt and those become shipping lanes. Get with the program!!
  14. Oh and one more thing, (I have to say this), welcome YAS to the Young Republicans club. And for the record, I'm NOT a Republican.
  15. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 06:21 PM) I for one think there's a mix of both...if Iraqi oil started flowing, it would put a serious dent in the prices you guys are paying for gas right now. A SERIOUS dent in it. True. However, from all that I have heard, OPEC never figures Iraqi oil when setting output because of said instability.
  16. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 06:18 PM) Actually no, they are usually just not hot-button enough to engage any discussion in this forum. Without any of the Iraq War/GEOT ineptness or domestic fiscal malfeasence (sp?) issues, I would still have seriosu reservations about administration policy. I knew before GWB was elected that this was going to be a very bad stretch for the environment, for educatuion, and for science funding. That alone made him thewrong choice from my perspective based on what I hold most important. The fact that so many administration missteps so overshadow even these serious considerations speaks volumes about the BushCo. deficiencies. But back to the Dem only thread point. This is the place where Balta, me, or anybody should be allowed to post stuff that "speaks volumes about what our true feelings are." Posted here, it is not intended to get a rise out of you, YAS, NUKE, or any of the new crop of Young Republicans. Rather, they are hands-across-the-water, preach-to-the-choir posts that allow us to share our frustration. This is where they should be, and I think they should be spared some of the :rolly from all of us fellow Dems. Point taken. At the same time, though, now I see why (taking out the bulls***, which I tried to do once) this thread is a lot longer.
  17. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 06:14 PM) Yeah, I think his original funding due to his own personal fortune was on the order of a few tens of millions in U.S. dollars...the majority of funding beyond that has come from things like Islamic Charities and donors in Saudi Arabia...who get a lot of their money either directly or indirectly from oil. So if the price of oil were to go through the roof...they'd hurt the U.S. and help themselves enormously. Which is almost certainly why the Iraqi oil system has been such a main target. No, the Iraqi oil has been a target because they're trying to stop the flow of said money back into Iraq so we are not doing what we said we would. It's not to effect global prices per se - it's to effect the local economy there and keep it down just enough to start the 'civil war' people keep talking about because their lifestyle 'sucks so bad' because of the 'evil Americans'.
  18. Well, I partially disagree... but I'll leave that there for now.
  19. QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 05:57 PM) Perspective is a wonderful thing. Everybody can be right at the same time. You know, though, we all lose. That's what's pathetic.
  20. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 06:10 PM) Indirectly from oil...his family ran something akin to what Halliburton is in the U.S...a large scale construction firm which builds the equipment that oil companies use. The difference is that in the Kingdom, that company is there largely because of its connections to the ruling leadership. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 06:10 PM) His family owns a large construction company that basically built Saudi Arabia if memory serves me correctly. Now adays most of his money comes from donations of like minded people, and shell companies that his followers run. Ahh, ok. Got it. Nonetheless, I agree with Balta's premise that they would make MORE off of the oil if they attacked.
  21. QUOTE(minors @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 06:07 PM) Because all they can do is wine about everything. I should go over there and ask them if they want a little cheese to go along with that wine. Everything Bush does is wrong in their eyes even if Bush got jobs for everyone and got world peace the liberals would complain about this as well. They can keep whining and we will keep winning elections. You're wrong. But that's ok. They clearly have a right to complain... they need to offer solutions, too, and if they do, they'll start winning elections. Trust me. Republicans suck ass just as much as the Demcrats do, it's just a different set of issues.
  22. QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 06:07 PM) Where do you think Bin Ladin gets his cash? Not entirely true. He inherited most of his money and it wasn't from oil IIRC.
  23. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 06:06 PM) I have never understood why energy facilities aren't the #1 target of Al Qaeda. If they really want to screw up the entire US, take away their energy supplies. I guarentee it will have more of an impact on the day to day lives of America than just 2874 people did. It sounds horribly callus, I know, but it would be the most effective means of shutting down the US economy and causing real chaos nationwide. It's going to happen. It's just a matter of time. And IMO it will be coordinated ... for maximum effect.
  24. QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 05:48 PM) true, the re-election was a bigger statement than the first election. And with that 2% margin of victory, an obvious mandate First time in 12 years a person actually won over 50% of the vote. Not a clear mandate, to be sure, but a mandate none the less.
  25. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 05:49 PM) And it most certainly is. But here in the Dem backroom, this is where we feel free to put up random, unsupported Bush bashing and Fox bashing posts. This is the appropriate place for such things. This is also becoming the only safe place where posting any little news item that might reflect poorly on the administration without getting the "here they go again" treatment from those who refuse to allow that any sort of criticism of the administration can have validity. And as YAS just said, it speaks volumes about what your true feelings are. As for criticism for the current administration, there's plenty to go around (at least from me), but most of the time you all just read right over those because it's not inflamed enough for you to comment on. Most of the time I offer support because if the blatent 'Bush bashing and Fox bashing' posts.
